Default Manchester United's hierarchy

Manchester United's hierarchy: Meet the Old Trafford chiefs Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff will work alongside

* Jose Mourinho signed a three-year deal at Manchester United on Friday
* The United manager will bring in his trusted assistant Rui Faria
* Goalkeeping coach Silvino Louro is expected to join the Old Trafford club
* Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward deals with the day-to-day running
* Woodward gave Mourinho a tour of Aon Training Ground on Monday

Jose Mourinho took his first steps into Carrington on Monday after signing a three-year deal to take over at Manchester United.

The Portuguese, whose contract is worth £45million and has the option of a extra year, was escorted around the premises by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and spent time chewing the fat with ambassador Sir Bobby Charlton.

Mourinho had a peak inside his new glass offices at the top of the training HQ where he will plot United’s Premier League title challenge next season.

But where does the 53-year-old fit among the United hierarchy? Sportsmail looks at those who will have a bearing on the success of Louis van Gaal’s replacement.

ED WOODWARD - EXECUTIVE VICE-CHAIRMAN

Woodward, who led United’s flotation on the market four years ago, chairs the main board and ultimately carries the can with supporters for the hiring and firing of managers. Desperate for this one to come off after Louis van Gaal’s failure and was seen beaming as his new man surveyed the new surroundings. Will provide him with substantial funds to strengthen.

AVRAM AND JOEL GLAZER - EXECUTIVE CO-CHAIRMEN

Both Malcolm Glazer’s sons joined the United board in 2005 and were thought to be taking on added responsibility after his death in 2014. Almost silent partners in their own club, however - the pair are very rarely heard of.

Joel (left) and Avram Glazer (right) have taken over the reins of the club following their dad's death in 2014

RICHARD ARNOLD - MANAGING DIRECTOR

A highly influential figure in the commercial success of United since his arrival in 2007 and a major player in their recent deals with adidas and Chevrolet. His standing at United was underlined by welcoming Mourinho on Monday alongside Woodward and Charlton.

Managing director Richard Arnold (second left) welcomed Jose Mourinho to United's Carrington base

JOHN MURTOUGH - HEAD OF FIRST-TEAM DEVELOPMENT

A multi-faceted job which has seen him help out in the overhaul of United’s academy structure over the last six months alongside club secretary John Alexander, while linking with Van Gaal’s seniors.

Key that he was also at Carrington for formal introductions earlier this week as United continue to re-jig their hierarchy. His primary role - alongside a few others - will come clearer in the next month.

NICK BUTT - HEAD OF ACADEMY

Appointed in February, Butt has been tasked with dealing with problems in the club’s academy, centred on communication through the age groups. He will oversee the development of United’s top talent coming through the ranks and handed the responsibility to tweak practices.

Mourinho has been criticised in the past for failing to engage in bringing youth through but will have Butt on hand to brief him. Ryan Giggs could be involved in that set-up should he stay at the club after talks in the coming days.

Nicky Butt has been tasked with the responsibility of heading up Manchester United's youth academy

RUI FARIA - ASSISTANT MANAGER

Mourinho had to bring his trusty sidekick to Manchester. Faria has followed him across Europe for 15 years.

He acts as a sounding board in tactical decisions and how training is conducted, described by Mourinho as ‘the guy that understands best my information and the way I work’.

Rui Faria is expected to join Mourinho at Old Trafford after working as an assistant at Chelsea, Real and Inter

SILVINO LOURO - GOALKEEPING COACH

The quieter man in Mourinho’s backroom staff, although has become embroiled in touchline disputes down the years - most notably at West Ham last year.

He assumed more general roles during the last spell at Chelsea, although is likely to take care of the goalkeepers given Frans Hoek left alongside Van Gaal.

Goalkeeping coach Silvino Louro (left) is expected to replace Frans Hoek at Manchester United

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON - AMBASSADOR

Charlton chatting away to Mourinho on club television was symbolic as they make peace following the former’s overt stance on whether United should ever hire him.

The 78-year-old would have preferred Giggs to be handed the reins but told Mourinho he was happy to see him and offered congratulations. Perhaps a sign of the times at Old Trafford that the ‘football board’ did not sway those in New York over Van Gaal’s replacement.

Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton (centre) greeted Mourinho despite his previous doubts

SIR ALEX FERGUSON - AMBASSADOR

Will be interesting to see when Mourinho meets up with Ferguson in a similar vein to Charlton. Ferguson has publicly praised the new man in the past, although it remains to be seen whether he will make a statement about the move.

Sir Alex Ferguson was at Wembley Stadium to cheer on United during their FA Cup final win over Palace

DAVID GILL - AMBASSADOR

Has made it quite clear that he - with Charlton and Ferguson - are available to talk through managerial discussions if requested. Was consulted in the final few months but was an advocate of a promotion for Giggs, saying he ‘can’t be a No 2 forever’.

Former Manchester United chief executive David Gill (left) is still in regular contact with his successor

JAMIE REIGLE - COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR

Manages the club’s sponsorship among other significant roles. Could be key in feeding back the mood of companies affiliated to United, including adidas, and the slight stumbling blocks over Mourinho’s trademark at Chelsea will have come under his umbrella.

Commercial director Jamie Reigle works closely with United's sponsors including adidas

THE OTHER FOUR GLAZER DIRECTORS

Kevin, Edward and Bryan Glazer are joined by their sister Darcie Glazer Kassewitz on the company board. Bryan and Edward are also co-chairmen of the NFL franchise Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Darcie Glazer Kassewitz is on Manchester United's board alongside her brothers

THE THREE INDEPENDENT DIRECTORS

Robert Leitao is head of financial giant Rothschild’s advisory business and whose role it is to challenge the executive committee.

Manu Sawhney, most recently managing director of ESPN STAR Sports, is a hugely influential individual in Asia and whose expertise on that continent is crucial for United’s model.

The third, John Hooks, is a major player in the fashion industry as president of Ralph Lauren Europe and has been on United’s board since 2012.

All three men bring an outside look at situations inside United - something which can only aid the club when undertaking big decisions.

JOHN ALEXANDER TO RETIRE IN SEPTEMBER

Manchester United's club secretary John Alexander is to retire in September.

The 61-year-old became only the fifth different secretary at United since 1926, when being appointed in 2010 following a spell in the same position at Tottenham Hotspur.

Alexander, who had a playing career with Millwall, Reading and Northampton Town, will continue to act as a consultant to the club when he retires.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said: "John is universally respected and admired throughout the game as being at the top of his profession. His know-how and intelligence have allowed him successfully to manage the transition from the traditional, authoritarian figure of the old club secretary to make sure that the office meets the demands of the modern game.

"Never afraid to challenge the existing order and to innovate in the way the club operates, his unrivalled experience has enabled us to make huge strides forward in the way the football club works.

"I am delighted that we have persuaded him to continue in a consultative capacity. His invaluable advice will be accessible both to me and his successor. We wish him and [his wife] Cathy every happiness in retirement. They will always be welcome at Old Trafford."

John Alexander said: "I didn't take this decision lightly, I want Cathy and I to be able to spend more time together. I’d like to thank the owners, Ed and Jose Mourinho for understanding my wish to retire and for offering me the chance to continue my association with the club and the game as a consultant.

"I have had the privilege of working for some of the best clubs and some of the greatest managers in the game, I feel honoured to have had such a wonderful career. I am equally sure that Cathy and I will enjoy this new chapter in our lives."

Manchester United's scouting manager Javier Ribalta departs club to take up sporting director role at Russian side Zenit St Petersburg

* Javier Ribalta has left Man United to join Zenit St Petersburg as sporting director
* There is no 'bad reason' behind Ribalta's decision to depart after one season
* The former Juventus scout moved to Old Trafford as scouting manager last year
* Man United have signed only Diogo Dalot, Fred and Lee Grant so far this summer

Manchester United's scouting manager Javier Ribalta has left the club after just one year in the job.

Ribalta moved from Juventus as part of a overhaul of United's recruitment network to work alongside chief scout Jim Lawlor and head of global scouting Marcel Bout 12 months ago.

He has been appointed sporting director at Zenit St Petersburg, where he will work alongside newly-appointed boss Sergei Semak who replaced Italy-bound Roberto Mancini at the helm.

While at Juventus, new Zenit sporting director Javier Ribalta was vital in signing Paul Pogba

The Spaniard played a key role in identifying Fred and Diogo Dalot as United targets this summer, while the club also bought Lee Grant from Stoke City.

It was hoped that Ribalta would have a similar impact as he did during five years at Juventus where he helped assemble some of the top talent in Europe on a budget, including Paul Pogba's free transfer from United to Turin.

he was the driving force behind the recruitment of Dani Alves, Paulo Dybala and Alex Sandro for the Serie A champions.

Man United's former scouting manager Ribalta helped sign Diogo Dalot (above) to the club

It's understood that Ribalta felt he could not turn down the opportunity to take on a more senior role at Zenit, and there has been no fallout with Jose Mourinho or 'bad reason' behind his departure.

Ribalta is reported to see the chance to become sporting director at a big European club as a 'great challenge'.

Before joining Juventus in 2012, Ribalta scouted prospective talent across Europe for Novara and Torino.

Manchester United sack reserve-team boss Ricky Sbragia as they begin summer overhaul at Old Trafford

* Ricky Sbragia has left the club after his second stint as reserve-team manager
* The 62-year-old's departure is set to trigger a summer of overhaul at the club
* Former reserves manager Warren Joyce has been linked with a return to the club

Manchester United Under 23s coach Ricky Sbragia has left the club as they look to instigate changes this summer.

Academy boss Nicky Butt will oversee a summer restructuring that is geared to improve levels under the first team and could also see former United midfielder Quinton Fortune take up a role.

Fortune, who turned 41 on Tuesday, is an ambassador at United and is no stranger to the Carrington training complex.

He has also been considered by South Africa manager Stuart Baxter for a coaching role on his backroom staff.

Sbragia, 62, returned to the club after 12 years away in 2017 but, though he was well-liked, the U23s were relegated last year and failed to make play-offs this season.

United’s U23s won just eight of their 22 matches last season, finishing sixth in the table, and Sbragia has agreed it is time to move on, leaving by mutual consent.

A return for Warren Joyce had been mooted but he is considering other options after leaving his role as coach of Melbourne City.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had called upon a number of the U23 squad but United are likely to add more youngsters as part of their summer recruitment with Stoke City's 18-year-old centre back Nathan Collins an option.

Solskjaer has threatened big changes behind the scenes and wants to instil greater fitness, too.

He has warned first-team players they will not be welcome on the club's pre-season tour if they return overweight.

United's youth teams have fallen behind their rivals in recent years and Sbragia's departure is set to mark the beginning of an overhaul at all levels of the club.

The 62-year-old was enjoying his second spell at the Premier League club, having helped develop the likes of Darren Fletcher and Kieran Richardson during his first stint as reserves manager between 2002 and 2005.

But during his time in charge this time around, United were relegated from the top tier of Premier League 2 in 2017-18.

Last season they finished sixth in the 12-team second division, with their equivalents from Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City all still in the league above.

Joyce, meanwhile, spent eight years as reserve-team manager before he left in 2016 to take over at Wigan.

Manchester United coach Mark Dempsey 'stable' after being rushed to hospital overnight in Australia on eve of club's first game of pre-season tour

* Mark Dempsey is recovering in hospital after being taking ill at hotel in Perth
* Reports in Australia are claiming that the male is now in a stable condition

Manchester United coach Mark Dempsey is 'in a stable condition' having been rushed to hospital in Perth.

United are currently on a pre-season tour of Australia and are due to play Perth Glory on Saturday.

Australian news channel 9 News reported that a male in his 50s was taken by ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital from the Crown Towers hotel, where the United squad are based. The Sun later reported that it was Dempsey.

Mark Dempsey, according to The Sun, is the Man United coach who was rushed to hospital

He was seen arriving at the hospital under heavy security around 3pm local time on Friday, with his face hidden behind a sheet as he was wheeled in, as seen in the footage by 7 News.

Further reports in Australia then emerged claiming that the male is now stable, although Royal Perth Hospital are yet to officially confirm his condition.

A source told The Sun: 'Everyone is in a state of shock. He's a very popular member of the backroom team. He's obviously 10,000 miles from his loved ones, which makes it even worse.'

Dempsey's wife, at home in Lancashire, told The Sun she had spoken to her husband.

She said: 'So everything is fine. I've just spoken to him now.

'He's still in hospital but maybe he'll be released in the morning. They're keeping him in for observation. He's on a drip because he's dehydrated.'

Dempsey was on United's books as a player between 1982 and 1986. Most recently he had been managing in Scandinavia before returning to Old Trafford as part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's backroom team.

Solskjaer's side arrived in Perth for the start of their pre-season tour on Monday and hosted an open training session at the WACA on Thursday night.

An earlier United statement read: 'A member of our backroom staff was taken ill overnight and has been sent to hospital by our club doctor for further treatment.

'We request that medical confidentiality is respected.'

United will take on local side Perth Glory at the Optus Stadium in a friendly on Saturday and then face Leeds, before the tour continues on to Singapore and China.

It was confirmed that Dempsey was not on the team bus as United headed to the ground on Saturday.

Manchester United coach Mark Dempsey will fly home as he is RELEASED after being rushed to hospital having suffered from 'dehydration and exhaustion' during club's pre-season tour of Australia

* The first-team coach will fly back after he was discharged from hospital in Perth
* He was rushed to Royal Perth Infirmary on Friday after being taken ill overnight
* Dempsey missed United's opening pre-season game against Perth Glory

Manchester United have confirmed that first-team coach Mark Dempsey will return home from the club's pre-season tour after he was discharged from hospital in Perth.

The 55-year-old was rushed to Royal Perth Infirmary on Friday on the advice of United's club doctor after being taken ill overnight at the team hotel.

Dempsey missed the team's opening game against Perth Glory at the Optus Stadium on Saturday, and afterwards United announced that he will fly home early next week.

A statement read: 'Mark Dempsey will be discharged from hospital following assessment and treatment. Due to the intensity of the Tour schedule we have decided together it's best for him to return home.'

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has previously worked with Dempsey at Molde and Cardiff, confirmed that his coach was heading home to his family in Lancashire.

'Mark's been assessed and discharged,' said Solskjaer. 'I've been to see him today and we've agreed it's best he'll return home now and then we'll see him when we come back.'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'appoints Simon Wells as personal scout to identify transfer targets' as Manchester United overhaul under-achieving squad

* Simon Wells from recruitment team will identify targets for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* Norwegian is in the midst of a major overhaul of Manchester United's squad
* Wells was United's Scandinavian scout during Solskjaer's time at Molde
* He was the scout who helped secure United's signing of Victor Lindelof in 2017

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'has appointed a personal scout to take care of the club's transfer targets.'

The Norwegian has asked Simon Wells from the club's recruitment team to closely assess players who could strengthen his under-achieving squad.

According to The Sun, the move comes with the blessing of the United hierarchy as they continue their search for a director of football.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'has appointed Simon Wells as a personal scout' to identify suitable transfer targets as he overhauls the squad. Wells was the scout who helped United sign the Swedish centre half Victor Lindelof

The pair know each other well from his time as manager of Molde in Norway because Wells was United's scout in the Scandinavia region at the time.

It was Wells who helped secure the signing of Swedish centre half Victor Lindelof from Benfica in 2017.

He was also one of the first to scout Portuguese sensation Joao Felix at Benfica before he made the £113million move to Atletico Madrid in the summer.

Solskjaer was appointed as caretaker manager at Old Trafford following the sacking of Jose Mourinho last December.

He initially restored United to winning ways but their form slumped following his appointment as their full-time manager in March.

United enjoyed a good summer in the transfer market, bringing in defenders Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka as well as winger Daniel James.

But an inconsistent start to the season confirmed to Solskjaer that further acquisitions will be necessary to restore United to former glories.

They host Arsenal in the Premier League on Monday night.
