'To be fifth with this squad is as good as it can possibly get': Owen Hargreaves insists Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'desperately needs help' to take Manchester United forward

* Manchester United currently sit fifth in Premier League, six points off top four
* The Red Devils have produced inconsistent displays once again this season
* Former midfielder Owen Hargreaves claims fifth place is about right for United

Owen Hargreaves claims the best Manchester United can ask for this season is fifth place in the Premier League, before insisting they need to heavily back Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the market.

Solskjaer continues to come under scrutiny at Old Trafford after yet another turbulent season for United - they currently sit fifth in the Premier League, six points off Chelsea in fourth.

And former United midfielder Hargreaves - who has backed Solskjaer - claims that they can't move further up the table without any assistance in the transfer window.

Owen Hargreaves says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (pictured) 'desperately needs help' in the market. Hargreaves insists United can't push higher than fifth without spending in the transfer window

'He desperately needs help,' the former Red Devils midfielder told BT Sport. 'If you think, [Ander] Herrera left, [Marouane] Fellaini left, in midfield, they are really light.

'Then [Romelu] Lukaku leaves, [Alexis] Sanchez leaves, they don't have any help up top.

'[Marcus] Rashford then gets injured, [Paul] Pogba hasn't played. [Scott] McTominay, one of their best players this season, hasn't played.

'The recruitment wasn't there to back Ole up and then injuries to key players. To be fifth with this squad, I think right now is as good as it can possibly get.

'There are only four points separating fifth and 14th. I don't think it's going to go more up, it's more likely to go down and that's the big worry.'

Default Re: Owen Hargreaves

Sir Alex Ferguson had to break up a FIGHT between Manchester United stars on eve of 2008 Champions League final because 'training was so intense', ahead of battle with Chelsea, reveals Owen Hargreaves

* Manchester United beat Chelsea in the 2008 Champions League final in Moscow
* But their players very nearly had a fight the day before the big game
* Owen Hargreaves has given insight into United's intense preparations
* He did not name the players involved in the heated training-ground row

Owen Hargreaves has revealed how Manchester United's players nearly got into a fight with each other on the eve of the 2008 Champions League final, in which they then went on to beat Chelsea.

Such was the fierce competitive nature of that squad, which contained the likes of Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored in the final, that a mere training game was the cause of the bust-up.

Things became so heated that boss Sir Alex Ferguson needed to intervene after a row escalated to the point of a violent bust-up, according to Hargreaves.

Manchester United's all-star squad celebrate winning the Champions League in 2008. But the atmosphere in training on the eve of the match was rather less convivial. Cristiano Ronaldo and Wes Brown were two of the other players involved in training - and Owen Hargreaves has revealed that some of United's stars nearly had a fight in that session

This happened while training in the Luzhniki Stadium, the venue for the final in Moscow. Much of that session took place in front of cameras, although the bust-up was not filmed. Hargreaves did not name the specific players involved in the row.

When asked by beIN Sport how Ferguson fired up the players before that final, Hargreaves explained: 'He didn't need to, he knew the boys were ready.

'I remember we did a training game in the stadium in Moscow the day before and we almost had a fight amongst the two teams because the training game was so intense.

Hargreaves did not reveal which players nearly had the fight on the eve of the big match

'One team lost and everybody was moaning at each other and Sir Alex had to come in and break it up. That's how it was. Everybody was so competitive about winning.

'Even in a training game, you'd think people didn't want to get injured but that wasn't the case. Everybody was just on it. Everybody was so excited for that game.'

United and Chelsea fought out a 1-1 draw in the final, with Ronaldo heading home the opening goal before Frank Lampard equalised on the stroke of half-time.

Chelsea were probably the better team for much of the game but saw Didier Drogba and Lampard hit the woodwork, and Drogba sent off for slapping Nemanja Vidic, and the trophy had to be won on penalties after 120 minutes of stalemate.

Ronaldo's miss handed Chelsea captain John Terry the opportunity to win it for his team, but he slipped while taking the kick and hit the post.

That would prove crucial after Nicolas Anelka later saw his kick saved by Edwin van der Sar, leading to famous images of Terry in tears in the rain.

It sealed Ferguson's second European Cup triumph, and United have failed to conquer Europe since, having been beaten by Barcelona in both the 2009 and 2011 finals.

Chelsea went on to finally win the competition in 2012, beating Bayern Munich in a penalty shootout.

Final Champions 2008 bisa dibilang sebagai puncak karir Hargreaves.
Setelah itu dia cedera lumayan lama dan karirnya langsung meredup di timnas...

'There was no fight, no tackling, no aggression': Owen Hargreaves lays into Man United after Brentford thrashing... but calls for fans NOT to blame David de Gea despite his first-half howlers

* Owen Hargreaves calls out Red Devils players for lack of fight in Brentford defeat
* United were thrashed 4-0 by the Bees in the Premier League after poor showing
* Hargreaves asks fans to avoid David de Gea criticism after making costly errors
* Red believes Erik ten Hag is at fault after failure to prepare side for match

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has slammed the Red Devils following their abysmal performance against Brentford.

The Bees beat United 4-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium after a first-half flurry of goals put them into a comfortable position. The goals came following a series of lacklustre performances from the United players.

Goalkeeper David de Gea took responsibility for the result as he was at fault for the first two goals, the first he let Josh Dasilva's shot squirm under him and the second, he made the wrong decision trying to pass out from the back.

Hargreaves, however, believes the blame for the result lies with new manager Erik ten Hag's failure to have the team ready for the match and the whole team's lack of fight throughout the 90 minutes.

On Premier League Productions, he said: 'They made some mistakes and the goals were poor. There was no fight to get back into the game, no tackling, no aggression. Football at this level is about competition, that's how you make it.

Owen Hargreaves has urged United fans not to blame David de Gea for the defeat. Hargreaves has said that the United players lacked fight during the 4-0 defeat to Brentford. Hargreaves has blamed manager Erik ten Hag for not preparing the players properly. David de Gea blamed himself for the result against Brentford in his post-match media talks

'Brentford won every battle today. You've got to win the battles. They weren't ready against Brighton and they weren't ready again. Erik ten Hag is a super coach, he did an amazing job at Ajax.

'But these two games have not gone to plan. I don't know how you can turn this around quickly.

'The confidence is just gone. It's a privilege and honour to wear that football shirt. We've all been there as players, had terrible games.'

"But you get through it by fighting and competing. Forget about the tactics, it's about winning your individual battles. I was hopeful [we would see a response after Brighton].

'I'm tired of being critical and negative. But what can you say? There wasn't any positives. Don't put all the blame on [David de Gea].

'Yes he made a huge mistake, but there is plenty of time to get back into the game and fight back. David has been in those teams where they do fight back, but it was not there today.'

De Gea took the blame after the game during his post-match press appearances despite Hargreaves's defence of him.

He told Sky Sports: 'I think I cost my team three points today. It was a poor performance from myself. After the first mistake and then the second, it was very tough to be playing, and it was a horrible day.

'Of course, we should react better but the moment we are living now is tough, every time we concede a goal. I should've saved the first shot and probably the result would be different.'

Manchester United are currently bottom of the Premier League table after starting their season with back-to-back defeats.

'He's got his finger on the pulse': Owen Hargreaves praises Erik ten Hag for his ruthless substitutions at Old Trafford... as he warns Man United's stars that they simply 'won't play' if they don't perform for the Dutchman

* Owen Hargreaves has been impressed by Erik ten Hag's ruthless decisions
* Ten Hag has not been afraid to change his side when players aren't performing
* Hargreaves feels this is the right way to go, and has warned United's star that they won't play if they don't play consistently well

Owen Hargreaves has been impressed by Erik ten Hag's ruthless streak since he arrived at Manchester United in the summer.

Ten Hag has seen his team lose four times already this season, and he has not been afraid to ring the changes between matches to try to find the right balance for his side.

He has already dropped Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire in the opening weeks of the season, and he has been happy to bring off high-profile players during games as well.

In Thursday night's 1-0 win against Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League, ten Hag hauled off summer signings Antony, Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia in the second half, and Scott McTominay came off the bench to net the winning goal. Speaking after the match, Hargreaves praised ten Hag for being proactive with his substitutions.

'He’s got his finger on the pulse. He knows when the team is not performing and who’s not,' Hargreaves told BT Sport.

'And if you’re not playing well he’ll take you off and make changes and you won’t play. There are only four or five players guaranteed to start, and now he’s made changes and those players (who came on) may play on the weekend.'

Ten Hag looked to be settling on his preferred starting XI when United won four straight league games before the international break last month.

Erik ten Hag made some ruthless changes during Man United's game against Omonia Nicosia. Scott McTominay came off the bench to score the winning goal for United in stoppage time. Hargreaves has been impressed by ten Hag's decision-making at Old Trafford this season

However, United then suffered a humiliating 6-3 defeat against Manchester City earlier this month, forcing ten Hag into a re-think.

He brought Casemiro, Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial into his starting line-up for the next league game against Everton which United won 2-1.

Hargreaves believes ten Hag is still trying to figure out his best team, but he thinks the 52-year-old has done a 'great job' of rotating his squad and keeping United competitive, with the Red Devils currently just a point outside the top four.

'He hasn’t settled on his best XI because he’s got a big squad but I think he’s doing a great job of making changes when he needs something,' Hargreaves said.
