Manchester United will keep hold of Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay despite their lack of minutes this season as manager Erik ten Hag wants to maintain defensive cover

* Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay have both struggled for playing time so far
* However, Manchester United will keep the pair at the club this January
* Erik ten Hag is keen to have defensive cover for the rest of this season
* Ten Hag insists Manchester United won't 'burn money' in hunt for a new striker

Manchester United want to keep Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay this month to maintain strength in depth for their squad.

Captain Maguire has started just three games this season in the Premier League and he made an injury-time cameo in Saturday's win over Wolves.

Despite being an integral part of England's international side, Maguire has been continuously overlooked by Erik ten Hag, who wants to keep him for defensive cover.

His playing time is set to be more limited ahead of the return of Lisandro Martinez, who could feature on Tuesday after returning late to training late due to Argentina's World Cup triumph.

Meanwhile, McTominay has struggled for playing time since the £70million arrival of Casemiro last summer.

Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay have both struggled for playing time so far this season. Manager Erik ten Hag is keen to keep both players though, as he wants defensive cover. Maguire has been overlooked by Ten Hag despite being a crucial player for England

His last start for the club came in the 6-3 loss to Manchester City in October and has has since been used a late substitute on several occasions.

The Scotland international has missed United's last two games with an illness but he looks set to return for the clash with Bournemouth.

Speaking ahead of the game, Erik ten Hag said: 'Both (McTominay and Martinez) were training yesterday and today, so I am quite optimistic about (them) returning to the squad, both of them.'

A win against the Cherries could see United move up to third in the league table if Arsenal beat Newcastle.

Default Re: Manchester United under Erik ten Hag

'Belief is growing': Erik ten Hag takes pride in Manchester United resurgence after making it four wins in four post-World Cup... but brushes aside any talk of a title race ahead of the visit of Man City next in the Premier League

* Manchester United went within a point of Manchester City with win on Tuesday
* Goals from Casemiro, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford ensured comfortable win
* Erik ten Hag hailed the progress his side have made - but brushed aside title talk
* Gary O'Neil said he was happy with his Bournemouth side's performance away

Erik ten Hag said 'belief is growing' at Manchester United after Tuesday's 3-0 win over Bournemouth but insisted it is still too early to think about a Premier League title challenge.

Marcus Rashford scored for a fourth consecutive game to add to earlier strikes from Casemiro and Luke Shaw as United made it four wins in a row in the league, and 13 in the last 16 in all competitions.

The victory left United fourth, one point behind rivals Manchester City, who head to Chelsea on Thursday before their next league appointment comes in the derby at Old Trafford on January 14.

United's recent form is a match for almost anyone, but Ten Hag tried to brush off a question about the title race.

'That's a big step,' he said. 'We have to go game to game, get the progress.

'Belief is growing and that's a good sign, it's good to have that feeling but we have to understand and be able to give 100 per cent in every game - 100 per cent energy, 100 per cent focus, 100 per cent playing as a team.

Erik ten Hag's side beat Bournemouth 3-0 to leave themselves just a point off Manchester City. Manchester United made it nine wins in ten across all competitions on Tuesday night against Bournemouth. Ten Hag alluded to the progress his side have made - but banished any premature title talk

'If you keep that philosophy it's possible but we have to go game to game and don't think too far ahead. It's now January so it's not even half a season we are talking about.'

United secured what was a comfortable win despite only occasionally hitting top gear, with Casemiro's goal the only shot on target in the first half.

Shaw created and finished the second, bursting from his own half, shifting the ball right and applying the finish when Alejandro Garnacho rolled in a low cross.

David De Gea then made saves to deny Philip Billing and Jaidon Anthony before Rashford finished things off in the 86th minute.

Ten Hag - who will wait until Wednesday for more information on a potentially serious injury to Donny van de Beek - said it had been far from a perfect performance and warned his team they needed to play smarter in the future.

'I think we have two top departments, attacking and defending, and a big gap in between, and that cost us a lot of energy,' he said. 'We got into a tennis match and we don't want to play tennis, we want to play football.

'We want to keep the ball, keep possession, recognise when to speed up and go for goal, but it cost us too much energy. The backline took a lot of risk and when it was difficult to get back we got stretched.

'It's the next step we have to make and we are still in the process.'

Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil called Saturday's performance in the 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace the worst of his tenure, but was much happier with the display at Old Trafford despite the final score.

'I thought it was very good,' he said. '3-0 was hard on us. We had some really big chances. Their first goal was disappointing because we kept them at bay and didn't really feel under threat at 0-0.

'The boys nailed the out-of-possession shape and we broke out a few times so to concede from a wide free-kick when we were well into the game was tough for them, we didn't deserve it.

'After half-time we tried to be more aggressive in the press more often but we get caught and it's 2-0. It's a tough ask from that moment but the response was excellent and we had six big chances with David De Gea making big saves.

'The majority of United's chances came when we opened the pitch up so there is lots to be pleased with.'

Default Re: Manchester United under Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag is 'convinced' his Man United side have built a never-say-die mentality after their comeback win in the Manchester derby... with the Red Devils now searching for a tenth straight win at Crystal Palace to move into second place

* Erik ten Hag watched Man United lose at Crystal Palace at the end of last season
* He is preparing to take his side back to Selhurst Park for the first time since then
* United go into the match after coming from behind to win the Manchester derby
* Ten Hag believes this showed that his Man United side refuse to give up in games
* If they beat Palace, it will be a tenth straight victory to move United into second

It's eight months since Erik ten Hag turned up at Selhurst Park to watch Manchester United for the first time after being confirmed as the club’s new manager.

Ten Hag sat alongside football director John Murtough for the 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace that day, as United ended their worst ever Premier League campaign in what was also interim manager Ralf Rangnick’s final game in charge.

United were on their knees. Rangnick said the squad needed the football equivalent of major heart surgery, and Ten Hag could have been forgiven for wondering what he had let himself in for.

The Dutchman returns to South London on Wednesday night having masterminded a complete transformation at Old Trafford, both in terms of results on the pitch and the mood off it.

Dutchman Erik ten Hag watched from the stands as Man United lost at Crystal Palace last year. It rounded off a dismal campaign for the Red Devils as the club finished down in sixth place

Ten Hag’s side will go above Manchester City and Newcastle into second place behind leaders Arsenal if they can record a 10th successive victory in all competitions for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson won 11 in a row in 2009.

Saturday’s dramatic comeback in the Manchester derby was another sign that United have developed the character and self-belief so typical of Ferguson’s greatest teams.

‘I’m convinced of that,’ said Ten Hag. ‘Teams need experience to build that mentality, to build that belief, that a game is only over when the ref whistles for the last time.

United have turned things around under Ten Hag, and won the Manchester derby on Saturday. Ten Hag believes United have built a never-say-die mentality since he arrived at the club

‘To stay in the game, you have to construct that and you need experiences like that (the derby) to improve even more and push it even more to a higher level of mentality.’

Ten Hag allowed his players to celebrate beating City, but has been quick to bring them back down to earth for the trip to Palace.

‘I think every win you have to celebrate. If you can’t celebrate, you kill the energy,’ said the United boss. ‘But we had to settle down after 24 hours and move on to the next game.

‘At Selhurst Park, with the atmosphere there it’s a difficult place to go. You have to be 100 per cent. Palace are a physical team and they will battle us from the first moment on. So we have to be really focused and have the right energy levels to beat them, that’s quite clear.’

United will return to London on Sunday to face Arsenal, and Ten Hag must decide whether to risk Brazil duo Casemiro and Fred on Wednesday night because both midfielders are one booking away from a ban.

United are assessing Anthony Martial’s fitness which could affect Wout Weghorst’s chances of making a debut after cutting short his loan at Besiktas to move to Old Trafford for the rest of the season.

'When you concede three in a top game you can't win': Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag demands that his defence 'learn lessons following avoidable goals' during Arsenal defeat

* Manchester United suffered a 3-2 defeat at Arsenal in their most recent match
* Erik ten Hag now wants improvement ahead of Nottingham Forest clash
* United travel to the City Ground in a Carabao Cup semi-final first leg encounter

Erik ten Hag has told his Manchester United players to learn the lesson of their painful defeat at Arsenal as he tries to deliver a first trophy in six years.

United lost for the first time in 11 games at the Emirates as Eddie Nketiah’s 90th-minute strike sealed a 3-2 win for the Gunners, with Ten Hag claiming that all three goals were ‘avoidable’.

As United look to get back to winning ways in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night, Ten Hag urged his players to learn from their mistakes.

‘In general, against Arsenal we defended very well,’ said the Dutchman. ‘They didn't get clean shots, was one time from free kick. There was a lot of defence between the ball and the goal.

‘But all the goals were avoidable and that's my point – it cannot happen. When you concede three goals in a top game you can't win, that's one of the conclusions. We have to take this lesson.

‘We left it behind. We said the right conclusions, then we have to move forward and quickly because tomorrow is a big game and focus on that.’

Manchester United chief Erik ten Hag has called on his side to improve in defence. United conceded three goals at Arsenal in a costly defeat for their Premier League title hopes

It’s six years since United last won silverware when Jose Mourinho delivered the Europa League and EFL Cup in 2017.

Ten Hag admits that is too long and wants to take a big step towards the final in March ahead of next week’s second leg at Old Trafford. The two ties fall either side of Saturday’s FA Cup fourth round clash with Reading.

‘It's about winning trophies, so we have a good opportunity but we have to go game to game,’ said Ten Hag. ‘Now we play Forest over two legs, so focus on the first leg and don't think further ahead because that will distract us.

‘It's the best feeling you can have, winning a trophy. I’ve had the luck in my career to win some and it's magnificent, especially for the fans. It's so great and I think the fans here have some experience, especially the older ones.

‘In this period Man United didn't win trophies and it’s too long ago. We are aware of that fact and we have to do it again.’

On facing Forest at the City Ground, he added: ‘It's a long time ago that United played there. It will be a good atmosphere and I think we like that when it’s a fanatical audience. I think it will motivate the players and we have to get ready for that.’

Manchester United squad 'don't want Mason Greenwood back in their changing room' despite forward having attempted rape and assault charges dropped... as Red Devils stars 'fear it could derail their progress'

* The Man United team reportedly don't want the exiled star back in their squad
* Greenwood recently had attempted rape and assault charges dropped
* Despite this, there are claims the United squad fear it could derail their progress

The Manchester United squad don't want Mason Greenwood reintegrated back into the changing room over fears it could derail their progress, according to reports.

The 21-year-old recently had attempted rape and assault charges dropped against him but still faces an internal club investigation into whether to reintegrate him into Erik ten Hag's first-team squad or part ways.

Greenwood remains on United's Premier League squad list, having been named among their Under-21 players at the beginning of the season, but there are emerging concerns.

According to The Sun, the Man United team - who have made significant progress under Erik ten Hag this season - are concerned that his return could derail their momentum.

A source told the outlet: 'The players are open to him returning to the team but the scrutiny could be massively distracting.

Mason Greenwood recently had attempted rape and assault charges dropped against him. There are reports that the United squad are against having Greenwood return to the squad

'The dressing room is the happiest it has been for ages and no one wants to rock the boat.'

United have been in brilliant form under ten Hag's guidance this year - despite off-field issues with Greenwood and Cristiano Ronaldo - and are third in the table.

The Red Devils have lost just one competitive fixture since the start of November and and have also progressed to the later stages of the Europa League.

Greenwood last played for United in January 2022 and has a contract with the club until 2025.

There was no sign of Greenwood's name on the squad list United registered with UEFA for the knockout rounds of the Europa League, which was updated on Friday.

United manager Ten Hag refused to comment further on the Greenwood situation when he held his press conference ahead of Saturday's home league fixture with Crystal Palace.

'I can't say anything about it,' he said. 'I refer to the statement of the club and at this moment I can't add anything.'

That club statement, released three hours after the Crown Prosecution Service announced charges were being dropped, read: 'Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped.

Greenwood, 21, arrived at court in November over the now dropped charges of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour. Manchester United are now carrying out their own internal investigations on Greenwood

'The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.'

There were also claims the United forward would reportedly be willing to resurrect his football career in China if Manchester United rip up his contract.

The player, who has been capped once for England, was first held in January 2022 over allegations relating to a young woman, after images and videos were posted online.

Charges were dropped against the 21-year-old following the 'withdrawal of key witnesses'.

He broke his silence after the news as he said: 'I am relieved that this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support.

'There will be no further comment at this time.'
