Default Re: Manchester United under Jose Mourinho

Marouane Fellaini was touted for the Manchester United exit door but Jose Mourinho has found his confidence… so can he finally justify £28m fee?

* Marouane Fellaini has impressed for Manchester United this season
* The Belgian midfielder has started both of United's two league games
* Fellaini was previously a blame figure for critical United fans
* New United boss Jose Mourinho has given Fellaini a new lease of life

There were more than a few surprised expressions in Manchester on Friday night.

Not because Manchester United so smoothly pushed Southampton aside - that was to be expected as Jose Mourinho galvanises a club desperately in need of a lift - but because of the emergence of a Marouane Fellaini worthy of starting at Old Trafford.

They watched power, the breaking up of play, muscling others off the ball in midfield. It is what Mourinho apparently expected of the Belgian and the new boss made his point afterwards.

Marouane Fellaini has impressed for Manchester United at the start of this season

‘Fellaini was so good,’ he said.

‘The way the wingers were closing spaces inside. I’m so happy with the organisation of the team.

‘Maybe a simple phone call can make a difference to a player who was feeling he was not loved. Everyone was saying he wasn’t for me.

‘Maybe a simple phone call then, after my presentation as Manchester United manager, changed a lot. I said to him “forget everything you read. With me you don’t leave, for sure.”’

That is certainly how he has dealt with others at United.

Mourinho might prefer to address his squad in large huddles during training but has offered a collection of individuals one-on-one time - not least the England trio he travelled to see before the European Championship.

For Fellaini this is already quite the turnaround, even if it is early days. He has played as many Premier League 90 minutes in a week as he managed in the last six months under Louis van Gaal.

He has been deployed as a central, defensive midfielder but is being allowed to affect games with the ball, too.

Mourinho spoke about wanting ‘specialists’. Playing them where suits best; rocket science it is not.

The former Everton man impressed against the Saints, using his physicality to break up play

What's inescapable, though, is that Fellaini was held up as a poster for the ordinary after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, producing disjointed performances with flying elbows.

Signing him for £28million was seen as indicative of the malaise United found themselves in under David Moyes and then Van Gaal.

Moyes sought to surround himself with people he had succeeded with at Everton - there would have been more if United had managed to lure Leighton Baines away - and Fellaini suffered as a result. He was guilty by association, although it must be pointed out he never really helped himself either.

It is why supporters have been shocked at how much he has influenced proceedings in the opening two games. This is a different player to the one they have watched over the last three years.

He knew his role on Friday, plugging the gaps in behind Paul Pogba when the world’s most expensive player gallivanted forward.

Fellaini will become, in effect, an enabler. Mopping up, winning his headers and duels. And that is how he is best suited. He will never be one to consistently glide beyond three players in midfield and open games up. When Mourinho talks of specialists, it is also a nod towards their limitations.

He wants athletes in midfield, physically imposing, something successful at Chelsea before in this country. Steven Davies and Oriol Romeu’s eyes will have widened when they saw him and Paul Pogba lining up before kick-off.

Van Gaal fell foul of expecting too much in an attacking sense from the 28-year-old, who did not score quite as many goals for Everton - 25 in the Premier League over five years - as is popularly believed.

Standing at 6ft 4in, he would be thrown forward in search of late goals to rescue games. Chuck it in to the big man.

It was tactically lazy and an acceptance that United had not been clever enough to find a way through, aimlessly passing side to side with the absence of purpose. A 2-0 defeat by Stoke away on Boxing Day, after which Van Gaal should really have been given his marching orders, was a case for the prosecution.

So time has been wasted with Fellaini. Here they have a destroyer who before leaving Goodison Park had been begrudgingly respected across the league. His previous two managers have been unable to find a way of making him fit into a United team, seemingly unaware Ferguson himself utilised big, strong powerful characters in key positions.

Darren Fletcher, for example, perhaps did not possess the panache immediately associated with United midfielders yet played more than 250 games for the club and was a crucial cog in lifting all there was to win.

The final word was left for Mourinho.

‘Maybe that confidence in Fellaini was unexpected,’ he said. ‘The more organised the team is, the easier it is for players to feel confident .

‘He has played well with Michael Carrick, he has played well with Ander Herrera, he has played well with Paul.’

Keeping it simple. It works.

That's why...MU will get EPL trophy this season.

Jose Mourinho has given Manchester United the winning mentality of champions, says Antonio Valencia

* Manchester United sit third in the Premier League after winning all of their games so far
* United are aiming to win their first league title since 2012-13

Manchester United may have experienced limited success since the Sir Alex Ferguson era ended in 2013, but they now have a ‘champion's mentality again’ according to Antonio Valencia.

According to the wing back, new United boss Jose Mourinho has brought back that winning feeling, and the Ecuadorian told MUTV that the confidence is here to stay.

Mourinho’s side have set the pace and won their first three games of the Premier League season, along with the Community Shield, meaning they meet their arch rivals Manchester City in a top-of-the-table clash next week.

‘I think he's given a really positive confidence boost to the side and that can be seen out there on the field,’ said the 31 year old, who won the league with the side in 2012-13.

‘Everyone is feeling confident, everyone wants the ball and that's a very good sign.

‘His advice, well, it's the same for all the team - always go out to win and always have the winning mentality of champions. Let's hope we can carry on in the same style.

Manchester United full back Antonio Valencia has revealed that coach Jose Mourinho has given the side a 'winning mentality' since joining the club

The signings of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba have added to the feel good factor at Old Trafford, meaning that the low scoring days of last season could be behind them.

‘You can see from the games played that we've scored a few goals already so you can appreciate things are going well on that score.

‘We're getting forward and creating lots of opportunities on goal. We've also brought in more quality players, which has improved us too.’

Speaking about Ibrahimovic, Valencia admitted that it helped knowing how good he was at his previous clubs.

‘Now we have someone in the box who we can aim for. In addition, we know exactly who he is and that he's made a great impression at whatever club he's played at.

‘He's started off on the right foot here at United and we're all here to help him when we can.

‘We know that we can play the ball up to him because we know he holds the ball up well and that he can also find and bring in other midfielders in wide positions.

‘You know that it's always a sound option when you give him the ball.'

Betapa 'Malasnya' Pemain-pemain Manchester United
Rossi Finza Noor - detikSport

Luas jelajah para pemain United hanya mencapai angka 526,6 kilometer.

Pantesan... klo dilihat maennya statis banget. Pada males bergerak. Minim pergerakan tanpa bola dan klo ada temen pegang bola pada pasif.

If Pep Guardiola were the Manchester United boss, Wayne Rooney would have been axed by now... Sportsmail's Three Wise Men give their verdicts

* Manchester United suffered three straight defeats in just eight days
* Wayne Rooney has come in for criticism and his best position remains a talking point as Jose Mourinho looks to find his perfect starting XI
* Paul Pogba is yet to hit top form following his world record move
* Jamie Redknapp, Martin Keown and Chris Sutton give their verdicts

Manchester United have lost three games in a row and already trail rivals City by six points in the title race.

The big-money signings who arrived at Old Trafford in the summer are struggling to gel as a team.

So what now for the red side of Manchester? Our experts Jamie Redknapp, Martin Keown and Chris Sutton pass verdict...

Manchester United and captain Wayne Rooney are struggling for form this season

1. How does Mourinho rediscover his mojo?

REDKNAPP: The biggest problem Mourinho has at the moment is finding the right balance in his starting XI. There are star players, big egos and young talents in that United dressing room, and he will be having sleepless nights trying to figure out the right recipe. There has always been an aura around Mourinho and he’s not shy to tell us how good he is, but now he really has to earn his money and lift United out of this rut.

KEOWN: Mourinho has to take a long look at himself and stop blaming everyone else. He can forge special relationships with players and give them great confidence, but it can also go in the other direction and lead to big falling outs. He blames his players and looks to separate himself from the problem when he needs to help them be the best they possibly can. But this situation isn’t about Mourinho, it’s about Manchester United. He has to put his ego to one side because he is part of the problem — and he needs to be part of the solution, too.

SUTTON: They are too predictable. He needs to adapt his style to suit Paul Pogba and drop Wayne Rooney as he is clearly struggling to find a system and a way of playing that suits United at the moment. It is early days and Mourinho needs to be given time at United to build his team but with the short-termism in football it’s important that he finds a quick fix. He will get it right but at the moment it is not going to plan.

2. Is he right to criticise players in public?

REDKNAPP: I’m not a big fan of that behaviour. Maybe he was trying to get a reaction from Luke Shaw, but I think this sort of thing should always be kept in-house. It’s only when things start going wrong that these comments start slipping out — it’s never Mourinho’s fault and he’s usually pretty quick to shift the blame on to someone else. I’m not sure he would do the same thing to someone like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, though!

KEOWN: It was very unkind of Mourinho to call out Luke Shaw on Sunday — not least because he was by no means the only one at fault for Watford’s second goal. At 21, Shaw is an easy target for Mourinho and would have been humiliated at being substituted immediately after the goal. He has the potential to be one of the finest left backs this country has ever produced, but he’s playing with no confidence. His main strength is to tear forward at any opportunity, but it looks as though Mourinho has him playing in a straitjacket.

SUTTON: It was an extremely surprising decision for Mourinho to single out Luke Shaw on Sunday. Calling out players individually in front of the whole world is not the wisest thing to do. Shaw will be thinking ‘Sod him!’ When I was at Blackburn Rovers Kenny Dalglish would criticise you, but it would be in private. That’s how it worked in my day. Coming out to criticise Shaw so early in his United career is a mistake on Mourinho’s part. His downfall at Chelsea was the falling out with Eden Hazard, Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas. He may have had a personality clash there, then called them out and it backfired. Previously, we never saw this side of Mourinho. He had so much success in previous years that the ugly side he showed at Chelsea never reared its head.

3. Is Rooney holding back United?

REDKNAPP: I’ve said it so many times in these pages — I don’t understand playing Rooney as a midfielder. He may feel like he hasn’t got the pace to play up front anymore, but for me he plays as a striker or not at all. Mourinho has to put his players in their best positions, which isn’t happening at the moment as he’s got too many of the same type. It’s going to be fascinating to see if he can do this without upsetting one of the big boys.

KEOWN: It seems Rooney has lost some of his spark, change of pace and extra determination and he doesn’t play with the same edge as he used to. He is struggling to influence the game high up the pitch so, yes, I think playing him as a No 10 is holding back United. Paul Scholes dropped further back into the midfield towards the end of his career so it would seem the natural thing for Rooney to do. But Mourinho said at the start of his tenure that Rooney isn’t a No 6 or a No 8, so where does he play him?

SUTTON: If Pep Guardiola was the manager of Manchester United Wayne Rooney would be dropped immediately. Rooney is a problem for both Jose Mourinho and England manager Sam Allardyce. Putting it simply, there are better players in his position for both club and country now. Mourinho has got to be brave enough to leave Rooney out. United have lacked pace, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not the sort of striker who will move in behind the defence and Rooney is no longer a No 10 who does that. either. I would have the best player in Germany last year, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, playing instead of him for United and for England I would pick Dele Alli. Rooney is holding both teams back. It is as simple as that. The problems really all come down to Rooney. He is the major issue here. If you leave him out it gives you far more options. Rooney has had his day.

4. How can United get the best out of Pogba?

REDKNAPP: He can play in a midfield two but it’s not his position. Playing him like this makes him a £20-30million player, but to get the full £89m-worth he must play further forward. There is no doubt United have signed a superb player and he will come good eventually, but Mourinho has got to adapt to him as much as Pogba has got to adapt to United. He’s got to change the system to get the best out of Pogba, otherwise he’ll get the hump, get his agent involved and then the ugly blame game begins.

KEOWN: Look at when Anthony Martial lost possession for Watford’s first goal — Pogba was miles up the pitch. A more conscientious midfielder would have sat deep until Martial had secured the ball, but Pogba lacked awareness and appreciation for the situation. Pogba is much more effective in an advanced position so it would make sense for him to play further forward with two sitting behind him. But he and Rooney can’t both play the No 10 role. It looks like Mourinho may have a big decision to make in the near future.

SUTTON: The holding role is not the one I thought Pogba would play when United spent £89m on him. But it is not the pressure of the world-record fee getting to him. Playing him in a holding two subdues him, so United would be better off playing him higher up the field — in a midfield with Mkhitaryan and Michael Carrick. Pogba is an all-rounder so can adapt but Mourinho needs to take the shackles off him and let him play his natural game. Pogba is playing to Mourinho’s style at the moment but it clearly doesn’t suit him.

5. Can Carrick restore order in midfield?

REDKNAPP: Michael Carrick might be the answer now, but not in the long term. He’s been one of the best passers in the world but he’s always been under-appreciated. There is a saying that he has his best games when he’s not playing — so he must be on fire now! There’s no doubt United need someone like him in midfield. I think Marouane Fellaini is a good player but he’s not good enough to play for United as a defensive midfielder. They need someone in there who can play one-touch football quicker and move the ball much better than they are at the moment.

KEOWN: Playing Carrick would be an improvement, but the likes of Ander Herrera, Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger will all feel they can contribute, too. Mourinho seems to have written off these players already. Schneiderlin was hot property last summer and Schweinsteiger impressed in a Germany side who reached the semi-finals at the Euros. How could someone of his calibre be left out in the cold before he’d even kicked a ball in pre-season? Any one of these midfielders would be an improvement on the current situation because, right now, Fellaini and Pogba are being played out of position.

SUTTON: Mourinho needs to find a way of getting Carrick in the team as Marouane Fellaini slows United down too much. Apart from an hour in the Community Shield match Carrick has not played yet, which I find odd. If they want to keep the ball better they need him in the team. Carrick has that vital Premier League experience. OK, he does not have the legs he had 10 years ago, but United are not a high-energy, pressing team, so that should not matter. What they lack is pace and someone who can pass the ball. Carrick can solve the latter problem for now.

6. Who would you pick for next league game?

REDKNAPP: De Gea; Valencia, Blind, Bailly, Shaw; Carrick, Pogba, Mkhitaryan; Rashford, Ibrahimovic, Rooney.

KEOWN: De Gea; Valencia, Smalling, Blind, Shaw; Schneiderlin; Rooney, Pogba; Martial, Ibrahimovic, Rashford.

SUTTON: De Gea; Valencia, Smalling, Bailly, Shaw; Carrick; Pogba, Mkhitaryan, Young, Rashford; Ibrahimovic.

7. Can United still win the title?

REDKNAPP: They can but they have got it all to do from this position. Last season I would have been more confident, but City have started so well. It seems like United thought they could just throw money at the situation without thinking about how their new players would fit into the team. Now Mourinho will be sitting in front of his tactics board and pulling his hair out trying to solve the problem.

KEOWN: Of course they can — look at the calibre of their squad and manager — but I don’t think they will. I expect them to improve as the season goes on, but there is a vast gulf in class between them and City and I don’t see how they can bridge it.

SUTTON: Absolutely not. The league is gone now — they have no chance of catching Manchester City, having lost twice in the league in a week. They are simply not in City’s league from what we have been shown so far.

mending Rooney dicadangin deh, posisinya diganti Mata. Rooney kayaknya 'dipaksa' main demi rekor yg hanya berjarak 4 gol. untuk Fellaini bisa mecoba Carrick/Schneiderlin sbg alternatif & Martial yg cedera bisa memainkan Young/Mkhitaryan.

Default Re: Manchester United under Jose Mourinho

Manchester United have slumped to three consecutive defeats: Here are five things Jose Mourinho must fix or risk making Louis van Gaal look good

* Watford beat Manchester United 3-1 at Vicarage Road on Sunday
* The loss was United's third in a row after Manchester derby defeat and a slip-up at Feyenoord in the Europa League
* Jose Mourinho had not lost three back-to-back matches in 10 years
* Sportsmail suggests five key areas which need to be fixed to stop the rot

The last 10 days have got to have hurt for Jose Mourinho.

Painful defeat to Manchester United's great rivals Manchester City and his own personal rival Pep Guardiola, lacklustre defeat in the Europa League to Feyenoord and embarrassing defeat to Watford.

Mourinho is starting to make Louis van Gaal look good.

His 100 per cent record in United's opening four games felt like a return to the Mourinho — and United — of old, but that has been annihilated by those results and their bullish manager is already coming under pressure.

Mourinho has not lost three successive games in a decade of management and even for a man of his vast experience and achievement he is moving into uncharted territory.

An acrimonious exit from Chelsea, troubling beginnings to his time at Old Trafford. Here, Sportsmail looks at five things that Mourinho has to fix.

ROONEY'S RULES

Back in July, Mourinho scoffed at the idea of Wayne Rooney playing a deeper role in midfield.

The Portuguese joked that if he had as much time on the ball he could play wonderful long passes too. But Rooney has seemingly appointed himself to a free role for United and England and it is becoming detrimental to both.

England manager Sam Allardyce admitted he could not control the player but Mourinho has to if he does not want to keep seeing moves from defence into attack break down.

England captain Rooney is not fitting into his No 10 role under Mourinho

Rooney has one goal this season in a Bournemouth game that he played poorly in. His touch has often been woeful, many of his passes astray. He has lost the sharpness that made him once lethal. He has three yellow cards in his last three United games.

Rooney is a 30-year-old who has spent his entire career in and out of shape.

He is a year younger than Cristiano Ronaldo, but with the physiology of a man many years his senior. Mourinho needs to drop him, or tell him what to do out on the pitch.

WHERE ARE THE GREAT CENTRE-BACKS?

United have been defined as much in history by their great centre back pairings as they have their memorable attackers.

Martin Buchan and Gordon McQueen, Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister, Jaap Stam and Ronny Johnsen, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

Could Chris Smalling claim a place in that category? He had potential to once but he is nowhere near realising that.

Eric Bailly, the £30million signing from Villarreal, looks like he could. Alongside Daley Blind the pair conceded only twice in their opening four victories.

Smalling and Eric Bailly are yet to convince as a solid central defensive partnership

Blind, a cultured ball-player who can read the game well, complemented Bailly's slightly naive, but still effective, gung-ho approach.

But the Dutchman was dropped for Smalling after the City defeat and United have lost twice more.

Against Watford, Sebastian Prodl played a long ball over the top and Smalling collided with David de Gea to gift Odion Ighalo an open goal.

Even though the Watford striker fluffed the chance, the incident did little to inspire confidence and showed the United defence was there for the taking.

THE FEARSOME FACTOR

When United used to take to the field in the late '90s through to the '00s, at the peak of the Sir Alex Ferguson glory days, opponents would spend the final few seconds before kick-off wondering how bad the damage would be that afternoon.

Publicly, yes, they would say they had every chance of winning the game. Privately, they were quaking. United were that good back then. Now, they are just another Premier League team.

Catch them on a bad day — nay, even an average day — and anyone in the league can beat them. That aura will take years to regrow and may even be impossible to capture once again.

STOP HAMMERING THE PLAYERS

Mourinho's biggest mistake at Chelsea — bar his ugly one-man crusade against their team doctor — was forcing the players to turn against him by repeatedly blaming them for mistakes.

He is continuing that approach at United. He singled out Luke Shaw after the Watford game, criticising the left back for his defending that led to the second goal.

'For their second goal it is a mistake that goes against our plan and against our training, because our intention was for their wing-backs to be pressed and not let them progress,' Mourinho said.

'And what happened was the guy gets the ball 20 to 25 metres away from our box and instead of being pressed, we give him the space to progress.

Mourinho has been quick to lay blame on his players for recent results

'And when he was inside the box we were not confident enough to tackle. For the second goal, Amrabat receives the ball and our left back is 25 metres from him instead of five.

'But even at 25 you have to jump and go and press. But no, we wait. This is a tactical but also a mental attitude. It's something that doesn't become perfect in a couple of weeks. So we have to improve, no doubt.'

Mourinho lost the dressing room in the latter stages of his time at Stamford Bridge.

Players who had fought and battled their way to the Premier League title the season before were no longer prepared to put it all on the line for their constantly critical manager.

GETTING THE BEST OUT OF POGBA

One must maintain a sense of perspective with Paul Pogba; he has played five games for Manchester United since his £89m move from Juventus.

He is 23 years old. He reached the Euro 2016 final with France.

There are not many players who made it to that stage and are not feeling the lagging effects at the start of this season.

But still, he cost a world record fee and Mourinho will know that he needs his star central midfielder to start paying something back.

Maybe with an assist, a goal, or just a scything through pass, anything to allay unease that an awful lot of money has been spent on a player who is not going to score 20-plus goals per season.

Default Re: Manchester United under Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho is ruffling Manchester United feathers in a bid to banish memories of Louis van Gaal... but it's not going down well with his players

* Jose Mourinho's Manchester United have lost their last three matches
* Mourinho has made big changes from the way Louis van Gaal did things
* But some of his players are struggling to adapt to the manager's demands
* A number of players have already been singled out for criticism
* United take on Northampton in the EFL Cup third round on Wednesday

Jose Mourinho is becoming increasingly exasperated with his players’ failure to take his ideas on board and abandon Louis van Gaal’s methods.

Manchester United have lost their last three games and play at Northampton Town on Wednesday night looking to avoid a major League Cup upset.

Mourinho’s public criticism of his players over the last 10 days has not gone down well with some of his squad, although it’s understood he has been far more outspoken inside the dressing room.

The United boss hinted last month that he would face problems stamping his mark on the team after two years under Van Gaal’s strict regime that left many players feeling like robots.

‘It is a difficult situation to change dynamics,’ he said. ‘It would be easier for me to have 20 new players and start from zero.

‘For two years, they had principles of play that are not mine, clearly. Step by step it will be my team.’

The Manchester United squad are said to be struggling to adjust to Jose Mourinho's methods. Mourinho has publicly criticised his players but is thought to have been more vocal in private

However, it has taken Mourinho longer than he expected to erase Van Gaal’s philosophy despite bringing in four new players in Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Eric Bailly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The former Chelsea boss wants his players to be more instinctive whereas Van Gaal — his mentor at Barcelona — insisted on drilling procedures into his team.

Ander Herrera is understood to be a prime example of a player who is confused after being asked to do the exact opposite under Mourinho as he was by Van Gaal.

United’s full backs are also said to be struggling with the new approach. Mourinho wants them to push up and look to get the ball forward, after they were ordered to play it sideways to their centre backs under the Dutchman.

Mourinho singled out Luke Shaw for criticism over Watford’s second goal when United lost 3-1 at Vicarage Road on Sunday, accusing the England left back of standing off Nordin Amrabat in the build-up.

Shaw, who is one of a number of regulars who will miss the Northampton game after scans revealed a minor groin tear, is said to be unhappy with the criticism.

It followed Mourinho’s decision to single out Mkhitaryan and Jesse Lingard in the Manchester derby a week earlier by substituting both players at half-time in the 2-1 defeat by City at Old Trafford.

He also felt the need to remind his players in public last week that they should not need any extra motivation from him to succeed when they enjoy a superstar lifestyle.

‘I am an extra source of motivation, but the motivation belongs to the player,’ he said. ‘The great life, the money they have to do what they want, I think they shouldn’t need extra motivation.

‘The club is too big, the supporters are too passionate for the professionals not to feel that every game is very important.’

Even though Mourinho’s criticism has been significantly stronger behind closed doors and ruffled a few feathers in the dressing room, the Old Trafford hierarchy are said to be relaxed about his approach.

His reputation for causing rows meant that they knew what they were getting when they hired the Portuguese coach, and believe they have the nearest thing to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Whether Ferguson would have criticised his players so pointedly in public is another matter and there are concerns in some quarters that Mourinho might start to lose the dressing room as he did in his second spell at Chelsea.

He was always going to make changes for the trip to Northampton — David de Gea, Pogba and Ibrahimovic are set to be rested — and the squad who travelled on Tuesday included a number of fringe players.

But Mourinho is still expected to field a relatively strong team against the League One club, mindful that a fourth defeat in a row would be unthinkable following the setbacks against City, Feyenoord and Watford.

United went out of this competition in the early rounds in both seasons under Van Gaal, losing to MK Dons and Middlesbrough.

Wayne Rooney, whose place against Leicester on Saturday is said to be under threat after a poor showing at Vicarage Road, travelled with the squad and is set to start in attack to boost his confidence. Michael Carrick, Ashley Young, Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin are among the fringe players who could feature.

Default Re: Manchester United under Jose Mourinho

The clock is ticking for Wayne Rooney as Manchester United seem to be moving on without their captain

* Wayne Rooney was a substitute in Manchester United's win over Leicester
* United did not seem to miss their captain as they ran out 4-1 winners
* Rooney appeared as a late replacement for starlet Marcus Rashford
* Chris Smalling described Rooney as England and United's 'main man'

Long after Manchester United's fans had streamed away from Old Trafford, lifted by the manner of this emphatic win, Wayne Rooney re-emerged on to the pitch with two of his three sons and started playing football again.

The United captain had appeared for 10 minutes against Leicester; a rather pointless appearance, considering his team were 4-0 up by half-time and took their foot off the pedal long before he replaced Marcus Rashford near the end.

Afterwards, Rooney came down minus his club tie and spoke to Michael Carrick and former United team-mate Nemanja Vidic in the tunnel before going back out with his boys.

Wayne Rooney was a late substitute in Manchester United's 4-1 victory over Leicester City

It will not have been lost on the 30-year-old striker that his team produced their best performance of the season - indeed, for some time - after Jose Mourinho dropped him to the bench.

It felt as though United had been liberated, freed from the shackles of a system that suited Rooney but not the rest.

Midfielder Paul Pogba was given the freedom to push forward and play more like a man who cost £89million, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic his main accomplice in linking up the attack.

Rashford and Jesse Lingard provided pace down the flanks, Juan Mata the creativity as Rooney's replacement at No 10, and Ander Herrera a highly effective midfield fulcrum.

Most of all, though, United played with an enterprise and spirit that was missing for two joyless years under Louis van Gaal. Chris Smalling, captain in Rooney's absence, diplomatically described him afterwards as 'England's main man and our main man'.

'He is often one of the most vocal and he was the same today,' added Smalling. 'Whether he is on the bench or playing, he is always that same character. That will never change with Wayne.'

The truth, however, is that United are moving on. Slowly perhaps. Rooney could well be back in the line-up for Thursday's Europa League match at home to Zorya Luhansk, just as he played for a largely second-string team against Northampton in the EFL Cup last week - an indication of his new place in the pecking order.

His best days are behind him and he could find his role being quickly redefined.

With a £300,000-a-week contract until 2019, it remains to be seen what the long-term future holds.

For now, though, he may have to get used to the bench as Mourinho tries to make performances like this one the benchmark for his team.

'If we can start the game with that tempo, there are not many teams who can live with us,' said Smalling.

'It's just great how we play on the front foot and it benefits all of us.

'It's about finding consistency to make sure we stay at the top end of the table because we don't want any more blips.

'There was a lot of talk about turning the situation around because it was a very bad week with the three results (defeats by Manchester City, Feyenoord and Watford). It's been down in training. It's hard when you're not winning - you can't enjoy yourself.

'But we could only really show that we've changed by doing it on the pitch, and that first half really gave us a marker to make sure we attain that.

'The manager stressed there are 70,000-odd people in the stands who would want to be in our shoes and his shoes. He really wanted to get over that factor of enjoying it. It's just a case of realising how lucky we are. You can see everyone did enjoy it, so that message really did get across.'

Rooney is closing in on Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time scoring record of 249 goals for United

Those United fans who went home happy at the weekend will be aware there have been a few false dawns since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013.

Rooney, too, has been written off more times than he would care to mention and has come back to prove his doubters wrong. This feels different, though.

This time it does seem as though the clock is ticking on a man who is set to break Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time scoring record of 249 goals for United this season.

And as he kicked a ball about with his boys, it was clear Rooney will have to step aside for the next generation at Old Trafford sooner rather than later.
