Manchester United v Real Madrid: Past meetings
Manchester Evening News - 11 Feb 2013

Manchester United's pairing with Real Madrid in the Champions League last 16 will see the two sides go head to head for the fifth time.

Here is a look at the past meetings between two of the biggest clubs in Europe.

1956-57 European Cup semi-final first leg, April 11: Real Madrid 3 (Rial, Di Stefano, Mateos) Manchester United 1 (T Taylor)

United held Real for an hour but then the Spaniards cut loose with Hector Rial and the great Alfredo di Stefano scoring in quick succession to put the hosts into a clear lead. Tommy Taylor pulled one back for United but almost immediately Enrique Mateos restored the home side's two goal advantage.

Second leg, April 25: Manchester United 2 (T Taylor, Charlton) Real Madrid 2 (Kopa, Mateos)

This was the first European game to be played under floodlights at Old Trafford. Any chance of United advancing had been wiped out before the interval when Raymond Kopa scored the visitors' first before Mateos slammed home a second. Taylor pulled one back 11 minutes after the re-start before Bobby Charlton scored his first European goal near to the final whistle.

1967-68 European Cup semi-final first leg, April 24: Manchester United 1 (Best) Real Madrid 0

By now Real were a shadow of the side which dominated the first five years of the European Cup. Only Gento remained of that illustrious team but they still proved difficult opponents for United to overcome at Old Trafford. It took a goal from George Best to give them a narrow lead to take to Madrid which, as the tie turned out, proved to be crucial.

Second leg, May 15: Real Madrid 3 (Pirri, Gento, Amancio) Manchester United 3 (Zoco og, Sadler, Foulkes)

Real overturned the first-leg deficit inside 40 minutes with Pirri and Gento both scoring to give them an aggregate lead. A Zoco own goal restored United's fortunes, only for Amancio to restore Real's lead right on half-time. David Sadler and long-serving defender Bill Foulkes both found the net in the last 20 minutes to send the Reds into the final for the first time.

1999-2000 Champions League quarter-final first leg, April 4: Real Madrid 0 Manchester United 0

Real always looked the more likely scorers and it took a series of fine stops from Mark Bosnich to keep the scoresheet blank for United. Dwight Yorke had a goal ruled out for offside but with home advantage in the second game, the visitors returned to England in optimistic mood.

Second leg, April 19: Manchester United 2 (Beckham, Scholes) Real Madrid 3 (Keane og, Raul 2)

Roy Keane gave Real the advantage when he turned Michel Salgado's cross into his own net. United pushed forward in a bid to get in front but Raul scored twice on the break. David Beckham pulled one back for United but their hopes had long since disappeared by the time Paul Scholes slotted home a penalty two minutes from time.

2002-03 Champions League quarter-final first leg, April 8: Real Madrid 3 (Figo, Raul 2) Manchester United 1 (Van Nistelrooy)

Luis Figo and a double from Raul left United on the brink of a rout in the last eight as Zinedine Zidane inspired Real to be at their ruthless best. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored a crucial away goal to keep United's hopes of progression alive.

Second leg, April 23: Manchester United 4 (Van Nistelrooy, Helguera og, Beckham 2) Real Madrid 3 (Ronaldo 3)

Ronaldo single-handedly wrecked United's Champions League title hopes with a stunning hat-trick. The Brazilian superstar scored an early goal which was cancelled out by Van Nistelrooy before he struck twice again early in the second half. Ivan Helguera's own goal and a double from substitute Beckham was not enough for United as Real finished a breathless match 6-5 winners on aggregate.

MEN - 11 Feb 2013
Andy Mitten column: Red Army following in the footsteps of history

The Red Army is waiting to move on Madrid. No United fan took the game against Everton as a given after last season’s collapse, but the talk was of Madrid even before the Toffees victory.

Those who are not going wish they were, and those who are heading to Spain as part of United’s biggest away following for a non-final European match since 2005 are buzzing.

Mancunians have ventured to Europe’s highest capital before. City played there in September, when the users of the excellent metro system were impressed by chants (and actions) of the ‘Yaya/Kolo Toure’ song. Roy Keane wasn’t so enamoured with the chants aimed at him and his dog later in the night.

United have been to football’s finest stadium, the Santiago Bernabeu, four times in competitive matches with a record of two draws and two defeats.

Madrid respect United.

“It’s Manchester, one of the greatest,” said their legendary former defender Ivan Helguera following a United v Madrid veterans game last June.

The Spaniards won that one, too. Madrid fans don’t consider this United side a great one and they don’t know what to make of their own.

Spanish champions and packed with world-class players, they’re inconsistent and torn by dressing room strife between a powerful group of great players who don’t get on with Jose Mourinho.

Fans hope their inconsistent team can have one of their good days, which they usually do at home. Away from the Bernabeu is different and the whites have lost more games away at this stage than of any season since 1998-99.

Their season, and Mourinho’s future at the club, hinges on winning a record 10th European Cup.

Madrid won the first five starting with victory in 1955, but Mancunians had been to Madrid before.

In 1936-37, 130 men and women went to Spain from the north west as part of the British Battalion of the International Brigade. Most took eight days to travel from Manchester to the Spanish border, singing the ‘Internationale’ as they went.

The men were soldiers and medics, the women nurses like Lillian Urmston, from Stalybridge.

When she returned from the front for leave in England, her ambulance was loaded up with medical supplies like carbolic soaps, bandages, drugs and disinfectants from local doctors to take back to Spain. A whip-round raised £700, a fortune in 1937.

The effort went beyond the 130 volunteers. A rally was held on Ardwick Green to raise awareness. At the Free Trade Hall another rally was held to send food ships from Manchester to Spain to help the Spanish people.

Half a million Spaniards had become refugees, hungry and ravaged by disease and death. It wasn’t only food that was needed.

One poster on Deansgate said: ‘You can help by sending warm blankets, knitted garments (for men, women and children), cigarettes, musical instruments, men’s clothing, shaving material and razor blades, writing paper, pencils and sewing materials.”

It all went to support the Spanish Republic, to fight fascism and General Franco’s troops in Spain’s civil war.

Wednesday’s game on February 13 marks the anniversary of the death of many of those Mancunian volunteers in the battle of Jarama just outside Madrid on February 12-13 1937.

Estimates put the loss of life at 16,000 from both sides, as Franco’s forces attacked in the hope of cutting off the vital Madrid-Valencia road and gaining the strategic heights of La Maranosa hill, before the Republicans, bolstered by the International Brigade (20-35,000 soldiers drawn from 53 countries) counter-attacked.

The International Brigade took the brunt of one of the Nationalist attacks and remained under fire in a position they came to call ‘Suicide Hill’.

After February 12, only 225 of the 600 members of the British battalion remained.

An International Brigade Memorial Plaque in Manchester Town Hall which commemorates the men and women who lost their lives will be rededicated after a ceremony there tomorrow at 11am.

A day later, the first of 5,000 Reds will start heading south to watch a game of football rather than attempt to save a beleaguered nation.

Real Madrid vs. Manchester United: Relive the 2003 2nd Leg Classic

The big match is finally almost here. Real Madrid will host Manchester United tonight in what is probably the most anticipated UEFA Champions League match so far this season.

If history is any guide, we could be in store for a classic.

When Real and United meet, the matches tend to be entertaining. To prove it, the Daily Mirror has a rundown here, and Firstpost Sports has another here.

For our purposes, though, we're interested in the last meeting between the two famous old clubs. It came in April 2003, and it was a vintage European knockout match.

United won 4-3 in the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinals at Old Trafford, but Real advanced to the semifinals thanks to a 3-1 victory at home in the first leg and a 6-5 aggregate win.

"I just hope Raul doesn't like traveling, because failing that we might have to stop him coming into the country," United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said (via The Guardian) after the Spanish forward dominated that first leg at the Estadio Bernabeu. "They've bought Ronaldo, Figo and Zidane, but for me the best player in the world at the moment is Raul."

It turned out that Ferguson should have been worried about Ronaldo after all. The Brazilian superstar hit a superb hat-trick as Real—led by Galacticos like Zinedine Zidane and Roberto Carlos—tore apart United's defense.

Ruud van Nistelrooy canceled out Ronaldo's early opener, and David Beckham—whose eye was stitched up following a famous confrontation with Ferguson—scored a brace, but United couldn't overcome Real's first-leg advantage.

Highlights from that eventful match appear in the clip above, which is our Set Piece Video of the Day for this Champions League Wednesday. Enjoy.

Our favorite parts include seeing all the former players from each club, like United's Beckham, van Nistelrooy and even Juan Sebastian Veron (!). For Real, of course, there's Zidane, Raul, a slightly younger-looking Vicente Del Bosque in the manager's box and a much, much younger-looking Iker Casillas in goal.
