Manchester United Transfer News: Latest on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Rumours

Manchester United are reportedly willing to part with a staggering £70 million this summer in order to sign Borussia Dortmund’s star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

That’s according to Rob Draper of the Mail on Sunday, who suggested the 26-year-old is a major target for the Red Devils.

“Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward revealed this week to United shareholders that the club has cash reserves of £121.6 million and indicated there will be 'star signings' in the summer,” wrote Draper.

Aubameyang has blossomed into an outstanding centre-forward this term under the guidance of manager Thomas Tuchel.

Aubameyang is versatile, meaning he can play on either flank or through the middle; it’s the latter spot in which he has excelled this season. He’s also one of the quickest players in world football, making him a nightmare to contain.

In front of goal he’s discovered a composure and a ruthlessness that has enabled Dortmund to cling onto the coattails of an awesome Bayern outfit in the upper echelons of the Bundesliga.

United could definitely do with some extra spark up front. While Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial have both been performing well as of late, they’re the only two genuine centre-forward options available at the moment. Additionally, aside from the latter, the Red Devils don’t possess players with dynamism comparable to Aubameyang.

Of course, much depends on the style of play employed. Manager Louis van Gaal seems to have shackled the United attackers for much of the season, with players seemingly unwilling—or unable—to take chances in possession or show freedom of movement off the ball. The result has been plenty of uninspiring, stagnant football.

Aubameyang would surely be tempted by the Premier League and Old Trafford. Although Dortmund play at the highest level, are backed by a huge fanbase and play some thrilling football under Tuchel, United are renowned as one of the biggest clubs in the world. For BVB, the prospect of a £70 million fee is also something that’d surely be appealing.

If the Bundesliga side do decide to sell, there will be plenty of clubs keen on Aubameyang, though, with Arsenal another outfit linked with a move, per Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph.

For United, who seem increasingly unlikely to finish in the top four, that will be a concern when pursuing players such as Aubameyang, who surely won’t want to give up the chance of playing Champions League football. It’s an issue likely to hamper the Red Devils in pursuit of any of the game’s top talents.

Manchester United aim to fight off Arsenal with £70million bid for Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

* Manchester United are interested in signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
* Borussia Dortmund striker is keen on a potential move to Old Trafford
* Gabon international is under contract to Bundesliga club until June 2020
* United are planning summer overhaul of their entire recruitment structure

Manchester United have moved a step closer to signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund in the summer as they push on with recruitment plans regardless of the identity of the manager next season.

Arsenal have fallen back in the race for the Dortmund striker and are not expected to challenge United as the fee could rise to £70million, which would wipe out Arsene Wenger’s transfer budget for the summer.

Even though the Gabon international, who was born in France, is under contract to Dortmund until 2020, it is understood he is keen on a potential move to United and a bid is expected at the end of the season.

Manchester United have moved a closer to signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund

Aubameyang is chasing Robert Lewandowski to be top scorer in the Bundesliga and has 22 goals this season and has 29 goals in total.

For United, the transfer signings will be just one part of a planned summer overhaul, with a director of football likely to be appointed to modernise the recruitment structure, which has struggled since Ed Woodward took over from David Gill in 2013.

Woodward has spent £250million, with notable, expensive flops being Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao while several deals which have yet to prove their worth, including Memphis Depay and Bastian Schweinsteiger.

FA technical director Dan Ashworth is being considered for the role which would see Jim Lawlor retained as chief scout heading up the scouting networks.

The director of football role, for which Ashworth is being considered, would be responsible for negotiating deals and plan for the future.

Next season’s manager will have to work within the new structure even if that is Jose Mourinho. The former Chelsea manager is still in the frame to replace Louis van Gaal at the end of the season with the top four regarded as an absolute minimum requirement by United executives.

Clearly though the squad will need supplementing especially if they have missed out on the Champions League again, although the Aubameyang deal will not hinge on whether United finish in the top four.

Default Re: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shot down Tottenham... now the Premier League's top clubs need to do all they can to sign Borussia Dortmund's hot-shot striker

* Borussia Dortmund beat Tottenham 5-1 on aggregate in Europa League
* Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored in both legs of the last-16 encounter
* Gabon striker has netted 35 times in all competitions this season
* Real Madrid are favourites to land one of Europe's hottest properties
* But Premier League teams must surely move for the prolific forward

As auditions go, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s performance over two legs against Tottenham would have landed him the lead role in a Hollywood big-budget blockbuster.

This surely has to be a sign to the Premier League’s elite that the Gabon forward can transfer his considerable goalscoring talent to one of their ranks.

Playing versus a team competing for the Premier League title, no less, his fine header in the first leg set them on their way to demolishing Mauricio Pochettino’s side over two legs and his first-half strike in the return at White Hart Lane, to kill off the tie, was simply exceptional.

Real Madrid are hot favourites to sign the Gabon striker but Premier League clubs must show interest

It took him only three touches to steady himself, while deciding whether, 30 yards and then some from goal, he should dribble at Tottenham’s defenders.

With his speed there is nothing they can do but back off.

Instead, he let rip over Hugo Lloris and into the far right of goal, executing the ‘punch’ kick which Cristiano Ronaldo has perfected and Aubameyang has clearly practised to unstoppable precision. The third was just showing off.

He looks intent on a move to Real Madrid, but if the Premier League want to see the world’s best players, then one of the top clubs has to break the bank for him.

The 26-year-old has already ruled out a move to Arsenal, but Chelsea and Manchester United need a striker, while Pep Guardiola will clearly want to make his mark at Manchester City with a marquee signing in the summer.

He's already ruled out a move to Arsenal, but could Pep Guardiola tempt him to Manchester City? Chelsea and Manchester United both desperately need a striker and Aubameyang certainly fits the bill

Here in north London, Aubameyang’s pace stood out just as much as his wonderful opening goal. Were it not for some good defending, he would have added a second in the first half when he was played through and left Tottenham’s defenders behind, only for a last-ditch challenge when he cut back inside.

And when he was sent through one-on-one again in the 59th minute, leaving Tottenham’s defenders in his jet stream, but shot over.

He eventually scored his second of the night, racing in behind the Spurs defence again and making no mistake.

He could be criticised for not capitalising on those two chances, but no-one could begrudge him his performance over 180 minutes.

He played mainly through the middle, constantly on the shoulder of the last defender, causing considerable concern knowing what he is capable of, but was comfortable drifting to either flank or dropping short at times, just to add to the confusing.

Aubameyang is not even in particularly good form, compared to his own earlier in the season. Just the six goals in 10 games.

Yet he had 22 in 17 from the opening game of the season and his tally now stands at 35 in 39. In the Bundesliga, he is two goals behind top-scorer Robert Lewandowski, on 24, but has five assists to one against the man he was signed to replace at Dortmund.

Suggestions emanating from Germany are that it would take £60million to tempt Dortmund to sell.

That is likely to be more posturing from their end to get a higher fee, but his contract, signed only last summer, runs until 2020, so they will feel under no pressure to release him.

It appears he would prefer a move to Real Madrid.

Reports in Spain have indicated a deal is in place between the player and the club, but not the two sides. Yet Aubameyang, who pipped Yaya Toure to the African Player of the Year, said: 'Real Madrid? There is no agreement but I promised my grandfather I would play there one day. Why wouldn't I want to discover new things?

'As I've said several times, I'd like to play in Spain and have good weather for once in my life.’

The weather would have been considerably worse had he become a Newcastle player shortly before Dortmund made a move in 2013. He was considering joining them, but opted for the German side, attracted by then-manager Jurgen Klopp’s style of play.

Dortmund are adamant they do not want to let him go — why would they? — but when their chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke made it clear recently they are not reliant on the player, there were obvious signs that he could be on his way.

If an English club can convince him to become their leading man — instead of choosing Real Madrid — the Premier League will surely find he plays a starring role next season.

Manchester United eyeing up move for £70million-rated Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

* Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has had another impressive season
* United remain interested in bringing the Gabon striker to Old Trafford
* Aubameyang is also being chased by some of the game's top clubs
* The striker has spoken of his desire to play in Europe's big leagues

Manchester United have registered solid interest in £70million-rated Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ahead of the summer.

The Borussia Dortmund striker has been a revelation this season and is being chased by a host of European giants, including Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Thomas Tuchel is worried about a potential dismantling of his Dortmund squad, with midfielder Ilkay Gundogan on his way to Manchester City and central defender Mats Hummels’ future up in the air.

Manchester United have registered interest in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ahead of a summer move

United are keen to pounce on that uncertainty, with Aubameyang holding a desire to play in both England and Spain - even though he is already 26.

Bursting onto the scene St Etienne, he has always wanted to play in each of Europe's top five leagues.

Louis van Gaal’s job remains precarious but any change in management would not affect United's pursuit of the Gabon international.

He has scored 34 goals in 41 games for Dortmund this campaign, with ex-boss Jurgen Klopp also keen on taking him to Liverpool.

Real Madrid remain the likeliest destination for Aubameyang, who revealed last month he made a personal family promise regarding the Galacticos.

He said: ‘Real Madrid? There is no agreement but I promised my grandfather I would play there one day.

'Why wouldn't I want to discover new things? As I've said several times, I'd like to play in Spain and have good weather for once in my life!’

United, though, are light on attacking options and want to land a big name to appease supporters after a difficult campaign at Old Trafford.

They have watched Aubameyang since the striker netted against Arsenal in the Champions League two years ago.

He recently broke the record for number of goals scored in a single Bundesliga season by an African, once held by Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse.
