FASTEST GOAL IN ENGLISH FOOTBALL

2.564 seconds - Marc Burrow for Cowes Sports Res. v Eastleigh Res. (April 3, 2004)

This goal holds the distinction of being the fastest scored in an FA-recognised match in England. It came in an amateur fixture played on the Isle of Wight and was verified by the governing body after receiving a match report from referee John Sorrell.

Burrows, who went on to score a hat-trick in a 5-3 win, said: 'My fellow striker Michael Ponter rolled the ball forward a couple of inches and I took a mighty swing at it. The wind was so strong I thought it was worth a goal.

'The ball just sailed over their poor keeper. I was so stunned I didn't really celebrate. I just put my hands in the air and burst out laughing.
'I have tried something similar once or twice but it normally goes out for a throw in and I feel like a right prat.'

FASTEST GOAL IN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

4 seconds - Jim Fryatt for Bradford Park Avenue v Tranmere Rovers (April 24, 1964)

This is believed to be the case, though in those days there were no video cameras recording a game like this. The referee Bob Simons said: 'I blew my whistle for the start and still had my stopwatch in my hand when the ball entered the net... The scoring time is exactly four seconds - no question of it.'

FASTEST GOAL ON LEAGUE DEBUT

7.7 seconds - Freddy Eastwood for Southend United v Swansea City (October 16, 2004)

19-year-old Freddy Eastwood wasn't hanging around on his debut for Southend, finding the net after just 7.7 seconds and going on to score a hat-trick.
At the time, Eastwood - who would go on to become a Roots Hall legend - was on loan from Conference South outfit Grays Athletic.

4 seconds - Gareth Morris for Ashton United v Skelmersdale United (September 2001)

With the FA Cup starting in 1871, it's incredibly hard to verify the fastest goal, but Ashton United's Gareth Morris has a fair claim.
The 21-year-old window fitter let fly from 60 yards after the ball was rolled back to him from kick-off and the goal soared over the Skem goalkeeper's head and into the net.

An FA spokesman said at the time: 'We can't verify that it is definitely the fastest goal in the history of the FA Cup, but it is certainly one of them.'
'The problem will be the age of the competition. I don't think there is an historical ledger going back 120 years, so it's difficult to say with no element of doubt that it is the fastest.'

FASTEST GOAL IN SCOTTISH PREMIER LEAGUE HISTORY

12.3 seconds - Kris Commons for Celtic v Aberdeen (March 16, 2013)

Commons described as 'crazy' the goal that holds the record for the Scottish top flight, scored just this year.

It was ironic that his goal stole the record - by a mere 0.2 seconds - from the man who set him up, Anthony Stokes.

'It was crazy,' the Celtic striker said. 'First of all, Mikael [Lustig] played it up front, Hoops [Gary Hooper] got a flick on, I found myself in space on the edge of the box and Stokesey played a great ball through to me. I took one touch and smashed it in. It was one of those crazy things that usually never happens.

“I don’t think half the fans were even in the stands yet. The manager wasn’t even in the dugout so it was a bit of whirlwind.'

FASTEST GOAL IN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

10.12 seconds - Roy Makaay for Bayern Munich v Real Madrid (March 7, 2007)

Trailing Real 3-2 from the away leg in this Round of 16 tie, Bayern were determined to be quick out the blocks on their own patch.

And Roy Makaay followed these instructions to the letter by halving the fastest goal record in the Champions League held by Arsenal's Gilberto Silva (20.07 seconds).

A poor touch from Roberto Carlos allowed Hasan Salihamidzic to pinch the ball and centre for Makaay to score with a cool finish.
Bayern went on to win the match 2-1, progressing to the last eight on away goals.

FASTEST GOAL IN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL

53 seconds - Paolo Maldini for AC Milan v Liverpool in the 2005 final

Often overlooked given Liverpool's miraculous comeback later in the evening, was that Milan took the lead inside a minute.

When Djimi Traore conceded a free-kick, Andrea Pirlo swung the ball in and veteran Maldini volleyed home.

The moment would ultimately become a mere footnote as Liverpool came back from three-down at half-time to win a fifth European Cup.

FASTEST GOAL IN WORLD CUP FINALS

10.89 seconds - Hakan Sukur for Turkey v South Korea (June 29, 2002)

Contested by two gutted semi-finalists, the third/fourth place play-off at a World Cup can all-too-often be a staid affair.

Not so in 2002, when Turkey edged out hosts South Korea 3-2 after a 10-second goal from veteran striker Hakan Sukur set them on their way.

FASTEST GOAL IN WORLD CUP QUALIFYING

8.3 seconds - Davide Gualtieri for San Marino v England (November 17, 1993)

This was a dark moment in the history of the England national team, when unknown Gualtieri capitalised seized on a loose Stuart Pearce back pass to roll the ball past David Seaman and put minnows San Marino ahead in what was a must-win match for Graham Taylor's England in order to reach the 1994 World Cup.

Ultimately England won 7-1, having taken 20 minutes to equalise, and this wasn't enough.

FASTEST GOAL IN EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS

68 seconds - Dmitri Kirichenko for Russia v Greece at Euro 2004

Greece would go on to surprise everyone and win Euro 2004, but it's often forgotten how close they came to being bundled out at the group stage.

They needed just one point to get through but got off to the worst possible start when Kirichenko slotted home after a mere 68 seconds.
Although they lost 2-1, Greece got through ahead of Group A rivals Spain by virtue of goals scored.

FASTEST GOAL EVER

The world record for fastest goal is a point of contention. There is a claim from Serbian junior player Vuk Bakic, who scored after just two seconds in a match between GSP Polet and Dorcol from 50 yards.

But Nawaf Al Abed also scored after two seconds for Al-Hilal against Al Shoalah in a Saudi Arabian league match. But the result was later removed from the record because ineligible players were on the field.
