Former Manchester United defender David May believes that Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand's defensive partnership is as good as that of legendary Old Trafford centre-backs Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister.

Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have been United's first-choice centre-back pairing for the past four years

Bruce and Pallister marshalled United's backline together for seven years and played an integral role in United's Premier League title triumph in 1992-93, the first time the club had won the league championship in 26 years.

The English pair went on to win a league and cup double in 1993-94 and 1995-96, though Bruce was plagued by injuries in the latter season, with May stepping in on a number of occasions to partner Pallister.

Ferdinand and Vidic have been United's first-choice defensive partnership since the start of the 2006-07 season, after the Serbian initally endured a difficult start to his Old Trafford career following a move from Spartak Moscow in January 2006.

Since then, United have won three league titles, two Carling Cups and the Champions League in 2008, with the duo forming the backbone of United's defence.

And May believes that United's current centre-back pairing are just as important to United's hopes of continued success as his former team-mates.

"They are massive for United," May told ESPNsoccernet. "You only have to go back to last season when we had all our injuries - if those two had been fit for longer, United's chances of winning the title would certainly have improved. When they were missing United never looked as strong, but now that they are back they are a pivotal part of United's trophy challenges.

"It's just like watching Pally and Brucey again with them. You've got Rio in the Pally mode - a tall centre-back who loves to bring the ball out of defence at his feet, while Brucey and Vidic are both those sort of players who would run through brick walls for you. You only have to look at Brucey's face to see his commitment as a player - he's broken his nose and taken a battering - and Vidic is in the same mould."

Waahhh kalo gitu Thread ni khusus untuk para legend nya UI nih, he.he ane nubie mah mengamati aja ama nambah wawasan tentang United, cuma kalo ane lihat sih selama ini Vidic ma Rio saling melengkapi ( walaupun sekarang Rio agak sedikit menurun ) bisa di lihat waktu Rio absen Vidic seperti bener-bener kehilangan sosok Rio Ferdinand di lini belakang United... yahhh semoga duet ni langgeng dan mengantarkan United meraih banyak gelar beberapa tahun ke depan.. Tp jika itu menggambarkan Pally dan Bruce adalah salah satu duet tertangguh yg dimiliki United, mungkin duet Rio-Vida bagi saya juga demikian, terbaik yg pernah saya liat selama menyaksikan Fergie Fledgling bermain

klo Ferdy dan Pally sama sama doyan main sepak kaki nyuri bola buat dibuang dan menghalangi bola dengan badan...

but... Bruce n Pally hebat di masa nya dulu... kini Ferdy dan Vida juga terbaik di era saat ini...

kenapa di bilang mirip, mungkin karena koordinasi lini belakang dan seringnya main bersama... jadi kompak... apalagi th 2008, mereka berdua jadi the best defender... dan sekarang, berdua masih mencari soul nya... hehehehehe

namun duet Pally-Bruce lebih sering tertolong dengan performa apik Peter Schmeichel yang memang sangat luar biasa waktu itu

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has no regrets about his spell in the Premier League with Manchester United, suggesting the opportunity to learn alongside “two of the best centre-backs in the world” in Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, was crucial to his development.

The World Cup winning Spaniard is now widely regarded as one of the finest defenders in the world, but during his Old Trafford career, which spanned four years between 2004 and 2008, he struggled to dislodge the current Premier League leaders’ first choice pairing of Ferdinand and Vidic.

The aforementioned duo remain integral to the Red Devil’s side, and the 23-year-old bears no ill-feeling towards his former employers.

Pique told FIFA.com: “I was just 17 when I joined United.

“I came on a lot there, by training in the first-team squad with players like Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand.

“I think I was too young , and barring my path were two of the best centre-backs in the world in Rio and Nemanja Vidic, who Sir Alex Ferguson rated more highly.

“But it was a very good experience, I still get on well with the coach and my former colleagues and I think it was a very useful period.”

Such is his respect for his former colleagues, Pique admitted the two defenders he failed to dislodge at Old Trafford remain amongst the players he looks up to in the modern game.

Pique explained: “I remember I used to watch Real Madrid’s Fernando Hierro, who I admired despite the fact he played for our eternal rivals.

“And at the moment there are several players I look up to, Ferdinand and Vidic being two examples, as well as Carles Puyol, who is a great friend and an example to follow.”
