Wayne Rooney slams government and football chiefs for treating footballers like 'guinea pigs' over coronavirus outbreak and warns: 'I would never forgive them if my family get infected'

* Wayne Rooney has slammed the confused message over coronavirus outbreak
* The ex-England captain says he would 'never forgive' them if his family fell ill
* Rooney also proposed a radical schedule shake-up of the football calendar
* It could see the current season being concluded as late as September

Wayne Rooney has criticised the government and the football authorities for treating players as 'guinea pigs' in their confused message over the coronavirus outbreak.

And the former England captain says he would 'never forgive' them if his family fell ill as a result.

Writing in The Times, Rooney also proposed a radical schedule shake-up which could see the current season being concluded as late as September, and the next two kicking off in winter-time as a result.

The government last Thursday gave the all clear for sporting events to continue but Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta's admission that he had tested positive led to the Premier League announcing on Friday all games would be suspended until April 4.

Rooney wrote in his column: 'Why did we wait until Friday? Why did it take Mikel Arteta to get ill for the game in England to do the right thing?

'For players, staff and their families it has been a worrying week - one in which you felt a lack of leadership from the government and from the FA and Premier League.

'After the emergency meeting, at last the right decision was made - until then it almost felt like footballers in England were being treated like guinea pigs.

'I know how I feel. If any of my family get infected through me because I've had to play when it's not safe, and they get seriously ill, I'd have to think hard about ever playing again. I would never forgive the authorities.'

Ahead of a reported blanket ban on big public gatherings next week, football's message continues to be confused, with many matches at non-league level going ahead as scheduled this weekend.

Rooney said that in effectively forcing the respective leagues to make their own decision, Prime Minister Boris Johnson had 'dodged' the issue. He added that he believed money was key to the authorities' initial reluctance to cancel.

'The rest of sport - tennis, Formula One, rugby, golf, football in other countries - was closing down and we were being told to carry on,' added Rooney.

'I think a lot of footballers were wondering, "Is it something to do with money being involved in this?"

Wayne Rooney believes players in England have been treated like 'guinea pigs' recently. The Premier League announced on Friday that all games would be suspended until April 4

Rooney added that he believes the authorities must come together to consider a radical re-structuring of the fixture calendar once the virus is over and football can resume.

It could include kicking off the next two Premier League seasons in winter - a revised schedule which would have a knock-on effect of better preparing international players for a winter World Cup in Qatar.

Rooney added: 'We're happy to play until September if the season extends to then, if that's how it has to be. That's our job. As long as we know we're safe to play and it's a safe environment for spectators, we'll play.

'The next World Cup is in November and December 2022, so you could actually use this situation as an opportunity and say we're going to finish the 2019-20 season later this year, then prepare for 2022 by having the next two seasons starting in winter.'

Rooney: Liverpool Pantas Juara, Tidak Adil Jika Musim Dibatalkan
Mohammad Resha Pratama - detikSport

Adhi Prasetya - detikSport

London - Wayne Rooney masih menjadi pencetak gol terbanyak Timnas Inggris sepanjang sejarah.

"Bobby Charlton perlu menunggu hampir 50 tahun agar rekornya dipecahkan saya.

'There's nothing wrong with it at all': Wayne Rooney says Roy Keane was correct to single out his Manchester United team-mates for criticism in infamous 2005 MUTV rant that ended his Old Trafford career

* United captain Roy Keane blasted team-mates after a dismal Middlesbrough loss
* Rant on in-house channel MUTV was deemed too controversial to be broadcast
* Keane left United a few weeks later following 480 appearances for the club
* Rooney, a team-mate of Keane at the time, believes his comments were justified
* Striker said he felt it important to impress Keane because of Irishman's 'aura'

Wayne Rooney believes Roy Keane was fully justified in his comments about Manchester United team-mates made in the infamous 2005 MUTV rant that ended his Old Trafford career.

Keane singled out six United players individually plus those emerging from the academy ranks in an acerbic diatribe following a dismal 4-1 defeat at Middlesbrough.

His criticism was considered so severe that United's management intervened to ensure it was never broadcast on the club's in-house television channel.

Wayne Rooney (left) believes Roy Keane (right) was correct to single out his Manchester United team-mates for criticism in the infamous 2005 MUTV rant that was never broadcast. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson allowed Keane to leave the club a few weeks after his rant

It hastened the Old Trafford exit of United captain Keane, who had made 480 appearances for the club, and he left by mutual consent in November 2005, joining Celtic a month later.

But Rooney, one of Keane's team-mates at the time, believes he was correct in his criticism, adding that the Irishman's 'aura' meant he was the one to impress at United rather than Sir Alex Ferguson.

Writing on the subject of leadership in The Sunday Times, Rooney said: 'Now Roy Keane was vocal. I remember my first United training session thinking, "I need to impress him". Not the manager. Him.

'I was at United when he gave his infamous MUTV interview but disagree with how it's portrayed.

'Roy was supposedly too critical of his team-mates but I've watched the video and there's nothing wrong with it at all.

'He said that players can't pass the ball 10 yards and they're playing for Manchester United and it's not good enough. Well, he's right.'

Rooney was part of an abysmal United performance as they lost 4-1 at Middlesbrough. The heavy loss on Teesside was the low point of a season of underachievement for United

A season that would see United struggle to keep pace with Jose Mourinho's Chelsea in the Premier League title race reached its nadir on October 29, when a miserable 4-1 loss at the Riverside Stadium pushed them down to seventh place.

Keane had already made various appearances on MUTV but was invited onto a programme called 'Roy Keane Plays The Pundit' in the aftermath of the Middlesbrough defeat, a game he missed through injury.

The United skipper proceeded to single out various team-mates for their poor performances in the game as clips of Middlesbrough's four goals were replayed.

Watching back a 30-yard goal scored by Gaizka Mendieta, Keane criticised goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, saying: 'He should have saved that. That was saveable.'

On his Irish compatriot John O'Shea, he said: 'He's just strolling around when he should have been busting a gut to get back.'

On defender Rio Ferdinand, who lost the ball to Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink for Boro's second goal, Keane said: 'I have seen that happen to Rio before. It is poor defending.

'Just because you are paid £120,000-a-week and play well for 20 minutes against Tottenham you think you are a superstar.'

Keane then said 'I can't understand why people in Scotland rave about Darren Fletcher' before saying about Kieran Richardson, 'he is a lazy defender who deserved to get punished…he wasn't doing his job.'

On Alan Smith, he added: 'What is he doing there? He is wandering around as if he is lost. He doesn't know what he is doing.'

And speaking generally about the young players in the United squad, Keane said: 'When they sign the contracts, they think they have made it.

'They owe it to the manager, the staff and the fans. They think they have made it. They haven't.'

Even some of the more experienced members of the team weren't spared, with Keane saying: 'The younger players have been let down by some of the more experienced ones - they are not leading. There is a shortage of characters.

'It seems to be in this club you have to play badly to be rewarded. Maybe that is what I should do when I come back [from injury] - play badly.'

Rooney was spared direct criticism from Keane and believes his comments were justified

Reflecting on the extraordinary criticism, Ferguson said Keane had 'slaughtered everyone' and added 'the hardest part of Roy's body is his tongue. He has the most savage tongue you can imagine.'

Keane defended his comments despite them leading to his Old Trafford departure.

He said: 'I had to do it. I was disappointed with the players but it was MUTV, propaganda for the club. So I did the interview.

'It was getting a bit silly so I got the players together in the dressing room and told them it was f****** nonsense.

'They were all going, "yeah, yeah". Not one of them had an issue. Not one.

'Even now people still say: "The video had to be destroyed." Like it was a nuclear weapon or something.'

Rooney: Liverpool-nya Klopp Bisa seperti MU di Era Fergie
Mohammad Resha Pratama - detikSport

Derby - Wayne Rooney tak sungkan memuji Juergen Klopp dan Liverpool. The Reds dinilai bisa mendominasi Premier League seperti Manchester United era Sir Alex Ferguson.

Liverpool bersama Klopp mulai menuai sukses selama lima tahun bersama-sama.

Kris Fathoni W - detikSport

Wayne Rooney dua tahun berseragam DC United.

REDS LEGEND RETURNING TO MANAGE SOCCER AID TEAM

Manchester United and England’s all-time leading goalscorer Wayne Rooney will manage England at Soccer Aid for Unicef this September.

The match takes place at Old Trafford, which means Rooney will take the Three Lions’ hot-seat in what would usually be the United home dugout. Fans will be able to watch Rooney’s managerial debut, live on ITV in September.

Soccer Aid for Unicef stalwart Sam Allardyce becomes England co-manager alongside Rooney, with David Seaman as goalkeeping coach. Wayne’s involvement in the world’s biggest annual charity match has been agreed with the full permission and support of Derby County Football Club.

On returning to Old Trafford to manage his country, Rooney said: “Taking part in Soccer Aid for Unicef is something I have wanted to do for many years. Previously, I have never been able to make the dates work, but this year was obviously different. I was enormously proud to be asked to manage the England team and although there will be no fans at the match, it is always special to go back to Old Trafford.

“Simply representing your country is always a huge honour – and this game is no different. I’m looking forward to working with Sam and David. Yes, the players and I want to win the match but the real victory is helping to raise millions of pounds for Unicef. This year, every £1 donated is automatically trebled thanks to the UK Government and Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance, so I would ask people to donate if they can.

“I’d like to thank Derby County Football Club for giving me special dispensation to take part in the match. Soccer Aid for Unicef is a show that we’ve always tried to watch as a family over the years. The names taking part this year will make it one of the most exciting to date, so I hope everyone at home tunes in.”
The 2020 match had been originally scheduled for Sunday 6 June. However, in light of the coronavirus outbreak and for the health and safety of all involved, a decision was taken to postpone the game until it was safe to reconvene. The exact date and time of the match will be announced by ITV in the coming week.

The well-being of everyone connected to Soccer Aid for Unicef is of paramount importance. The game’s resumption is happening in line with UK Government advice and stringent health and safety protocols, which will be overseen by Prenetics – the same testing company being used by professional football.

The Rooney managerial appointment follows the first group of players who will take part in September’s behind-closed-doors’ game. Jason Manford, Joel Dommett, Santan Dave, James Bay, Kelly Smith MBE, Patrice Evra, David James and Lianne Sanderson will make their Soccer Aid for Unicef debuts alongside returning stars Yaya Touré, Wes Brown, Katie Chapman, Robbie Keane, Olly Murs, Kem Cetinay, Marvin Humes and Joe Wicks. More names will be announced in due course.

An all-star England team will take on the Soccer Aid World XI FC with both teams featuring household names from the worlds of sport and entertainment. This year’s teams of celebrities and former professional footballers will ‘Play for Generation Covid’, to help stop the spread of coronavirus and limit the impact on children’s lives.

Corona virus is the biggest global crisis for vulnerable children and families since the Second World War. Every day for the next six months, 6,000 more children could die as coronavirus pushes national health systems to breaking point. A whole generation of children is at risk.

Children around the world need the public’s support now more than ever, so Soccer Aid for Unicef has pulled out all the stops to ensure the match can go ahead. This year’s teams of celebrities and former professional footballers will ‘Play for Generation Covid’, to help stop the spread of coronavirus and limit the impact on children’s lives.

Since 2006, Soccer Aid for Unicef has raised over £38million to help give children all over the world a childhood full of play. Soccer Aid for Unicef 2019 raised a record breaking £7.9million. The match was the brainchild of pop megastar Robbie Williams.

The programme, being produced by Initial, will be broadcast exclusively live on ITV and STV. The exact date and time of the programme will be announced by the broadcaster in due course.

Wayne Rooney defends Harry Maguire over Mykonos charges as ex-Man United captain says 'I know how difficult it can be... but you can't hide yourself away on holiday' and insists incident is 'out of character' for the England star

* Harry Maguire is set for a retrial after his application for appeal was accepted
* The Man United defender was convicted at a court on the Greek island of Syros
* But United said the appeal nullifies the ruling of a 21-month suspended sentence
* And former United skipper Wayne Rooney says Maguire is not of that character

Wayne Rooney has leapt to the defence of Manchester United captain Harry Maguire after the England defender was found guilty of assaulting a police officer and attempted bribery in Mykonos.

The United captain is set for a full retrial in the Greek courts after his application for appeal against his guilty verdict was accepted.

United and England have both stood by their player, with the Premier League outfit saying the appeal nullifies Tuesday's ruling and means Maguire has no criminal record ahead of a retrial.

'I think all I can say on that is Harry, the way I know him, that is completely out of character for him with everything that is reported to have happened,' Rooney told talkSPORT.

'I just think as a nation, as people we are too quick to judge. I couldn't get my head around how he went to the court and he was found guilty and sentences in the space of one or two hours, I was like 'how that's happened?'

'Harry is not that type of person at all. You've got to look at it, he's there with his girlfriend, his family and his friends and their girlfriends.

'So it is not a group of lads where sometimes things can happen. In my opinion, something has gone on that has maybe provoked [him]. It is just out of character, it is not him at all.

'Obviously he was found guilty and there's an appeal, so at the minute there's no charges now against his name until the next court date.'

[B]Wayne Rooney has leapt to the defence Harry Maguire following his guilty verdict on Tuesday. The Manchester United captain is set for a retrial after his application for appeal was accepted

England manager Gareth Southgate is also ready to recall Maguire for the October internationals after axing him from the latest squad to face Iceland and Denmark next month.

The 27-year-old defender had been convicted at a court on the Greek island of Syros for offences of assault and bribery and handed a 21-month suspended prison sentence following an incident outside a bar.

Maguire's lawyer claimed in court that the footballer's sister Daisy was injected with a date rape drug by two mysterious Albanian men outside the bar the defendants were at.

Daisy collapsed, triggering a brawl, and police rushed to the scene, with the Albanians fleeing, the court was told.

The court heard that Maguire and his group asked to be taken to hospital after the brawl, but were stopped by undercover police.

After more violent clashes, the three accused were driven to a police station, where officers kicked Maguire on the leg and told him: 'Your career is over'.

The court also heard how Maguire told Greek police 'don't you know who I am? I'm the captain of Man Utd', before attempting to bribe officers.

It is understood no date has yet been fixed for the appeal and, while United would like the matter dealt with as soon as possible, they recognise it could be a two years before the case is heard.

Meanwhile, Sportsmail revealed on Wednesday United have no intention of stripping the centre-back of the club captaincy, and former skipper Rooney has said the reports of Maguire's behaviour are not in keeping with the person he knows.

United have stood by their captain and said the appeal nullifies Tuesday's ruling in Syros. England manager Gareth Southgate is also preparing to recall Maguire for the October games. rmer United captain Rooney believes the reports were not in keeping with the man he knows

Rooney himself has had to deal with the pressure of the spotlight throughout his career and openly admitted that he's had his own brushes with the law.

But United and England's hit back at claims that Maguire should have spent his holiday in a villa to keep himself out of the public eye.

'It is not easy, obviously I have made my own mistakes, I have had my own issues with the law, both in England and abroad so I know how difficult that can be but I think with Harry he is not that character at all,' Rooney continued.

'I heard people saying why doesn't he go and hire a villa and stay in the villa.

'Now especially that there is a big campaign for mental health, you go and lock yourself away for the next 10 years and you stay in a villa and you don't put yourself in any public viewing.

'Why should he go and hide in a villa, he is a human being!

'I get that [security is an issue] if you are with a group of lads, but if you are out with your girlfriend or your wife you don't think of any trouble occurring. I only ever had security once in my whole career which came off the back of Euro 2004.

'So for me something's gone on that isn't right, and as a human being you might react…'
