Default Re: Jesse Lingard

Jesse Lingard 'ready to LEAVE Man United this summer unless he receives assurances from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he will play regularly' as he looks to revive his England career in time for the 2022 World Cup

* Lingard impressed on loan at West Ham last season with some stellar showings
* He has also caught the eye of boss Solskjaer in pre-season at Manchester United
* The Norwegian is considering bringing him in against Southampton on Sunday
* Lingard 'will reluctantly look to depart' if regular game-time isn't on the cards
* There have been no formal bids yet for the £25million-rated attacking midfielder

Jesse Lingard is set to leave Manchester United this summer if he believes he is not going to play regularly, as he looks to boost his chances of returning to the international fold with England.

The attacking midfielder fell out of favour at United and was sent out on loan to West Ham last season, where he won numerous plaudits for his performances.

According to the Times, Lingard wants regular first-team football and could force a way out of Old Trafford by the transfer window deadline on August 31 to get it.

Jesse Lingard (left) is reportedly willing to leave Manchester United by the end of this transfer window at the end of the month if he does not receive assurances regarding his playing time

The 28-year-old has impressed in pre-season after returning to Manchester, scoring against Queens Park Rangers and shining against Wayne Rooney's Derby.

Although Covid-19 ruled him out of the club's Premier League opener, a 5-1 win against Leeds, he has returned the training pitch and scored again in a friendly against Burnley on Tuesday.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly now mulling over whether to bring him in to the squad against Southampton on Sunday, but regular game-time is far from guaranteed with the Red Devils despite his fine pre-season and form last campaign.

The talismanic Bruno Fernandes also prefers a central No 10 role, with United's winger positions well stocked with £73m signing Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Paul Pogba capable of playing out wide.

The 28-year-old attacking midfielder impressed many on loan at West Ham last season (above). Lingard scored nine goals and recorded five assists in just 16 games for David Moyes' side

It would be difficult for Lingard to leave the club he joined 21 years ago, but with one year left on his contract, he is willing to make that move to increase his chances of returning to Gareth Southgate's England squad.

The Three Lions boss brought him into his provisional Euro 2020 squad but did not pick him in his final 23-man group - although he is said to be impressed by Lingard's attitude and performances upon returning to the team.

Although it is understood one enquiry for the £25m-rated star was received from Italy, there have as yet not been any official bids for the player, with West Ham interested in re-signing him permanently but unwilling to pay the asking price.

Lingard's stellar form at the London Stadium - with nine goals and five assists in just 16 appearances - saw David Moyes' Hammers finish sixth, missing out on Champions League football by just two points.

Gary Neville admits he's 'disappointed' Jesse Lingard failed to leave Man United after showing he was 'a really good player' at West Ham... as he fears he'll be a fringe player again after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's summer spree

* Jesse Lingard was sent out on loan to West Ham in January of last season
* The 28-year-old enjoyed his loan spell, recording nine goals and four assists
* The England international has now been reintegrated into the Man United squad
* But former Red Devil Gary Neville believes Lingard made the wrong decision
* He's worried he'll be a fringe player after the signings of Sancho and Ronaldo

Gary Neville is 'disappointed' that Jesse Lingard didn't secure a move away from Manchester United this summer as the former Red Devil believes the midfielder 'had something going on' at West Ham.

The 28-year-old England star fell out of favour at United and was sent out on loan to the Hammers last season, where he won numerous plaudits for his performances.

Lingard enjoyed his spell at the London Stadium, scoring nine goals and providing four assists in 16 appearances after arriving in January.

Gary Neville has said he is 'disappointed' that Jesse Lingard didn't move to West Ham. The 28-year-old enjoyed his spell at the London Stadium, scoring nine goals since January

Upon the completion of his loan, Lingard has now been reintegrated into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad despite West Ham's eagerness to make the deal permanent over the summer.

But Neville is not convinced that was the right choice as he believes Lingard, along with a handful of other fringe players, should have made the permanent move away from Old Trafford to further his career.

'I would actually have thought that a couple more players at Manchester United [would have left]. I’m disappointed for Jesse Lingard that he’s not left Manchester United,' he told Sky Sports.

‘He’ll get a few games, he’ll get moments on the pitch, he’ll contribute, but I think he had something going at West Ham last year that meant Jesse Lingard in his own right was standing up as a really good player.

Lingard fell out of favour at Manchester United but has now been reintegrated into the squad. Neville claimed a permanent move to the Hammers would have benefitted Lingard's career

‘To go back to being a squad player again I think, for me, is disappointing. I think you sometimes have to sort of fly the nest and go. I thought he’d already done that with what he did last year.

‘So I think there’s two or three players that won’t get a lot of game time this year that could have joined Dan James and really furthered their careers and got more football.’

This summer's transfer window saw the arrival of Jadon Sancho and the sensational homecoming of Cristiano Ronaldo to bolster United's already jam packed attacking ranks.

The talismanic Bruno Fernandes prefers a central No 10 role, with United's winger positions well stocked with £73m signing Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Paul Pogba capable of playing out wide.

Meanwhile, a different Ronaldo to the one who last set this league alight is coming back to Old Trafford but he is still guaranteed to breeze into Solskjaer's side up front.

Lingard's regular game-time is therefore far from guaranteed with the Red Devils, despite his fine pre-season and form last campaign.

Neville also claimed Dan James's £25m move to Premier League rivals Leeds United was the right decision for the benefit of his career.

The Sky Sports pundit added: 'I think it’s really good for Dan James. I think this is one of those where it’s a win-win, there’s no sadness for me in Dan James leaving because I think he came to United, he always did his very best, he was a massive threat on the counter-attack.

'Manchester United have got a lot of players in those types of areas and I think it’s really important for young players to go and play. And Leeds have always wanted him, they wanted him first time around when Manchester United got him.

‘He’ll suit the way in which Leeds play. You think of the way Leeds play on the counter-attack with such speed, one-on-ones all over the pitch, he’ll love it there.

‘The crowd there is a big crowd, they’re a club who demand a lot as well, so I think it’s a good thing for Man United to get the money that they’ve got and I think it’s a good thing for Dan James that he furthers his career at a good club.’

Jesse Lingard is 'too good' to be a fringe player at Manchester United and 'missed the opportunity' to get out this summer, insists West Ham coach Stuart Pearce

* Midfielder Jesse Lingard enjoyed a fantastic loan spell at West Ham last season
* The 28-year-old will fight for a starting place at Manchester United this season
* He has now reportedly snubbed a new contract due to concerns over game time
* Lingard has entered the final year of his deal and could leave for free in summer

West Ham coach Stuart Pearce insisted that Jesse Lingard is 'too good a player' to warm the bench at Old Trafford.

Lingard enjoyed a successful loan spell with the Hammers last season. He recorded nine goals and four assists, winning plaudits for his performances.

West Ham had been keen to bring Lingard back to east London this summer but a deal failed to materialise as the club refused to meet Manchester United's asking price of £30million.

West Ham coach Stuart Pearce insists that Jesse Lingard is 'too good' to be a fringe player. Lingard fell out of favour at Manchester United but has now been reintegrated into the squad. There is extra pressure after the arrival of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo

Despite West Ham's eagerness to make the deal permanent before the transfer window slammed shut, the 28-year-old returned to United to fight for his place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad.

But the midfielder has only played four minutes for United so far this season and faces an uphill battle to earn a starting spot, despite scoring twice for England against Andorra last Sunday.

This summer saw the arrival of Jadon Sancho and the sensational homecoming of Cristiano Ronaldo to bolster United's already jam-packed attacking ranks.

Lingard, who has entered the final year of his £100,000-a-week deal at the club, has now reportedly snubbed a new contract due to his concerns over a lack of playing time.

Pearce believes the England international should have made the move away from Old Trafford this summer and fears he may have missed his chance.

'He has missed the opportunity to leave United in this transfer window,' Pearce told TalkSPORT via the Evening Standard.

'He can reassess his situation come January once again and decide whether there is an opportunity to move clubs or whatever. He holds the cards. The most important thing for him at the moment is his football.

Lingard enjoyed a successful loan spell at West Ham last season but didn't move permanently. The 28-year-old wants game time to boost his chances of making England's World Cup team. David Moyes could make another move for Lingard in January if he doesn't get game time

'He is playing the odd game for United and playing extremely well for England. Those performances for England might just help get him in the United side.

'He is too good a player to be sat on the outside of it not playing to be honest. He is at an age where he needs to be playing now.'

David Moyes could consider returning to the negotiating table in January if Lingard struggles for game time under Solskjaer.

With his contract set to expire next summer, Lingard is free to talk to clubs in January with a view to leaving for free at the end of the season.

'I am confused, why he didn't join West Ham permanently?': Trevor Sinclair questions Jesse Lingard's ambitions after 'turning down return to London Stadium before rejecting new deal at Manchester United'

* Jesse Lingard scored nine goals for West Ham in the second half of last season
* His form saw him re-called to a provisional 33-man England squad for Euro 2020
* He did not leave Manchester United and has now reportedly rejected new deal
* Trevor Sinclair insists he cannot understand why he did not re-join the Hammers

Trevor Sinclair insists Jesse Lingard is 'not as ambitious as I'd like him to be' after reportedly turning down a return to West Ham before allegedly rejecting a new deal at Manchester United.

The 28-year-old excelled at the London Stadium after joining on loan for the second half of last season, scoring nine Premier League goals for David Moyes' side and playing a pivotal role in helping them qualify for the Europa League.

His form saw him picked for England's provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2020 this summer, although he was later cut from the final 26-man squad named by Gareth Southgate.

But the Hammers were unable to secure a permanent deal for the England international after failing to meet United's valuation, but some reports now claim the player himself was not keen on a return and had instead set his sights on fighting for a place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

However, earlier this week, reports claimed Lingard had rejected a new contract at Old Trafford amid concerns over a lack of playing time.

And former Hammers winger Sinclair insists he remains perplexed as to why he did not re-join the east London side as the 'main man' this summer.

'If he doesn't get given the assurances and signs the new deal, then he's not as ambitious as I'd like him to be,' Sinclair said of Lingard - who has played just four minutes of club football this season - on talkSPORT.

Trevor Sinclair has questioned the ambition of Jesse Lingard after failing to move. Lingard scored nine goals for West Ham last term but some reports claim he turned down return. His form in the second half of last season saw him re-called to a provisional England squad. But he reportedly chose to stay at United and fight for a place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, only to then allegedly reject a new deal earlier this week. Stuart Pearce also believes Lingard is too good to be on the fringes of the United squad

'I am confused, why he didn't join West Ham permanently? He was loved there, he was the main man.

'He played once for Manchester United last season, he played 16 times for West Ham. He scored goals, got back into the England squad, why wouldn't he want to sign for them?

'Why would you not want to be in that environment?'

Stuart Pearce also believes Lingard is too good to be on the fringes of the United squad and missed a trick by not moving away from Old Trafford this summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals he's still hopeful that under-fire Jesse Lingard WILL sign a new deal - and backs Edinson Cavani to have a 'big impact' this season after he finally returns to training next week

* Jesse Lingard rejected the club's offer of a new contract earlier this month
* But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains hopeful Lingard will change his mind
* A sloppy backpass from the England international cost team against Young Boys
* It came after Lingard came off the bench to score against Newcastle United
* Lingard played well at West Ham on loan last season and they play United next

Jesse Lingard has triggered a surge of interest from top clubs in the Premier League and Europe since rejecting a new contract at Manchester United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Thursday that United are still hopeful of keeping Lingard at Old Trafford beyond the end of his current deal in June despite the England international turning down the club’s offer last week.

It is understood that 28-year-old Lingard is open to staying at United — he joined the club at the age of seven — but wants to be sure that he will play enough games.

He did not make a single Premier League appearance for United last season before moving to West Ham for a highly-successful loan spell that brought nine goals in 16 games, and April’s award for Premier League player of the month.

Jesse Lingard's loose backpass cost Manchester United dearly in their Champions League opener against Young Boys - but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hopes he signs a new contract. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side go up against West Ham - where Lingard spent a successful spell on loan last season - in the Premier League on Sunday

He is aware that his next move will be the biggest of his career, whether he decides to extend his stay at United or seek a new challenge elsewhere.

There has been no shortage of interest at home and abroad after Lingard’s camp turned down United’s offer, and the next couple of months are seen as crucial.

Solskjaer’s side face West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday and again in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. Lingard will return to the London Stadium this weekend having regained his England place and scored three goals in five games for club and country this season. However, he faces stiff competition for a place at Old Trafford after United spent £92.8million this summer on Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho to strengthen a forward line that includes Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Edinson Cavani, Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

Lingard had a setback in Bern on Tuesday night when his stray back-pass led to a late goal as United lost 2-1 to Young Boys, but Solskjaer is in no doubt that he wants to keep the player.

‘He’s got one year left on his contract and the club is talking to him and his dad,’ said the United boss.

‘We see him as a United player in the future as well. Jesse has come back to us after a great spell at West Ham. He showed his qualities and got back into the England squad.

‘We really want to see the best of him this season. We support him and we hope to keep him here with us — he’s a Red through and through.’

Solskjaer confirmed that Cavani will return to training next week after missing the trip to Switzerland through injury.

The Uruguay star, who was caught up in the club versus country row over Covid quarantine before the international break, has played less than half an hour this season.

He also gave up his No 7 to Ronaldo but Solskjaer said: ‘I see Edinson having a massive impact. He can’t wait to play and he’s working really hard to get back on the pitch.’

Default Re: Jesse Lingard

LINGARD LOOKING FOR CAPITAL GAINS

Jesse Lingard is confident Manchester United can extend our record unbeaten away run in the Premier League, when tackling his former club West Ham United on Sunday.

The England international enjoyed a brilliant spell with the Hammers last season, helping them qualify for the Europa League, in which they started with a 2-0 win at Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia on Thursday.

Although surely guaranteed a warm reception at the London Stadium, Lingard's focus is, naturally, purely on helping the Reds take the points and stretching the record string of games without defeat on the road to 29 games. Number 28 was racked up with United's 1-0 win at Wolves before the international break.

While some will point to games being played behind closed doors as a possible factor in the impressive unbeaten stretch, Lingard would argue that the lack of the loyal away support had been a big miss for the Reds.

"Away games can be tough but having the fans there backing us, week in and week out, always helps us and gives us that boost. They're brilliant," said Jesse.

"Obviously, it's down to us on the day to perform and get the three points and we've done tremendously in the league away trips recently.

“I think it's always good to start on the right foot, to remain positive and get the results in early, scoring lots of goals. The fans have been brilliant. We missed playing in front of fans and they have been a huge help.

“Even though I was not involved in the Leeds game, the atmosphere was just unreal. When Ronny [Cristiano Ronaldo] came back the other day, Old Trafford was bouncing. I'd never experienced it like that before, to be honest. I know the fans can really help and I think they have done.

"The next few games are going to be tough, but we have got the strength and depth in the squad to win the games and get the three points in all of them."

Jesse only has fond memories of his time in the claret-and-blue colours of West Ham and there is no doubt he was a major driving force behind their qualification for Europe.

"Like I've said, it was a reset for me personally, I wanted to play games, help the team get into the Europa League, which we did, and I enjoyed every moment of it," Jesse told us. "The lads were brilliant, the staff were brilliant and the fans supported me throughout.

“On a personal level, it was about getting minutes, doing well for myself and trying to get back into the England side but, as a collective, Europe was massive for West Ham and one of the goals we wanted to get to.

“The manager gave me the freedom up top to roam about, get on the ball and try to make things happen. With the run of games I had, the confidence kicks in and, once you've scored one, then two and three start going into the back of the net. I wasn't short of confidence playing and it was one of the best half-seasons I've had so it was a brilliant experience.

“Obviously, you don't get into Europe if you're not a good side. West Ham are well organised and can counter quick and be hard to break down. So it's going to be a tough game and we've got to be at it, if we want to get the three points. We've trained well so we'll go into the game confident."

West Ham were never close to signing Jesse Lingard, reveals David Moyes... as he claims Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'made it quite clear' he wanted him at Man United

* David Moyes says West Ham were never close to signing Jesse Lingard
* Lingard excelled while on loan at West Ham from Manchester United last season
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made it clear that he wanted to keep the 28-year-old

David Moyes has revealed that West Ham weren't close to signing Jesse Lingard from Manchester United on a permanent basis.

Lingard enjoyed a hugely productive loan spell at West Ham in the second half of last season, during which he scored nine goals and provided five assists in 16 Premier League appearances.

There were strong suggestions that the attacking midfielder could rejoin West Ham permanently, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer informed Moyes that he wanted to keep Lingard at Old Trafford.

David Moyes says West Ham were never close to signing Jesse Lingard on a permanent basis. Lingard excelled while on loan at West Ham last season as he scored nine goals in the league

Lingard could play some part against West Ham this weekend when Solskjaer's side visit London Stadium.

As reported by Sky Sports, Moyes said: 'Ole made it quite clear to me early in the transfer window that he wanted to keep him.

'So I knew pretty early that he would be staying at Manchester United.

'I was hearing all the stuff but I had a private conversation with Ole who made it clear he was staying.'

Since returning to Manchester United Lingard has had a mixed time. He has featured twice as a substitute in the Premier League, scoring against Newcastle last weekend.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eager for Lingard to sign a new contract

However, he also came off the bench against Young Boys in the Champions League and needlessly squandered possession in the build up to the Swiss side scoring a late winner.

The 28-year-old's current contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of this season and Solskjaer revealed that this week that he hopes Lingard will remain at the club despite rejecting an offer of a new deal.

Solskjaer said: ‘He’s got one year left on his contract and the club is talking to him and his dad.

‘We see him as a United player in the future as well. Jesse has come back to us after a great spell at West Ham. He showed his qualities and got back into the England squad.

‘We really want to see the best of him this season. We support him and we hope to keep him here with us — he’s a Red through and through.’

Lingard joined United's academy at the age of seven and has gone on to made 213 appearances for the club, scoring 34 goals and providing 20 assists. He has been capped by England on 31 occasions.

* The 28-year-old tried to find David de Gea - but instead let Young Boys win 2-1
* However, the England international came on to make the difference at West Ham
* He dribbled into the box before beating Lukasz Fabianski with a brilliant strike
* Solskjaer felt Cristiano Ronaldo should have been awarded two penalties
However, he admitted that Luke Shaw was right to be penalised for handball

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has heaped praise on match-winner Jesse Lingard for bouncing back to silence old club West Ham just days after his error at Young Boys cost Manchester United a point in the Europa League.

Lingard came on for Cristiano Ronaldo in Bern, with his pass deep into stoppage time intended for David de Gea cut out by Jordan Siebatcheu, who slotted home.

The 28-year-old started on the bench again today at the ground where he was so impressive last season, as he came on for Paul Pogba this time on 73 minutes.

The game looked like it could be heading for a draw before Lingard dribbled into the box, worked a yard of space and then curled a brilliant effort beyond Lukasz Fabianski into the Pole's top left-hand corner to break the hearts of the home faithful.

It was a remarkable turnaround in fortunes after his struggles in Switzerland, with Solskjaer delighted with the Englishman's contribution, saying: 'You have to learn to live with the highs and the lows.

'He said sorry after Tuesday and everyone said that's not necessary. He came on [today] and was brilliant.

Jesse Lingard was devastated after his awful pass saw Manchester United lose to Young Boys. However, the man on loan at West Ham last season responded emphatically three days later. The 28-year-old fashioned some space before curling a stunning strike past Lukasz Fabianski

'It was a great goal. I'm so happy for Jesse. Of course, he had a tough evening on Tuesday, but he's knuckled down and has worked hard again.

'He's been the same bright, positive lad, and what a goal. So happy for him. It was a great pass from Nemanja [Matic] and a good turn by Jesse.

'[It was] a great response to their goal. I thought we played some very good football first half, but then we need to defend better.'

It seemed as if Lingard's goal would be the last decisive moment of the match, but VAR put a stop to that notion when Martin Atkinson went to the monitor before awarding the Hammers a penalty in the dying seconds after Luke Shaw had raised his left arm and handled Andriy Yarmolenko's point-blank cross.

Mark Noble was brought on to take the spot-kick, but the club captain and set-piece specialist saw his effort tipped away excellently by David de Gea, who was mobbed by his team-mates at the full-time whistle.

'The handball is probably right, he was making himself bigger,' Solskjaer admitted. 'If you clip the ball into someone's hands and they're right there, it's difficult.

'David de Gea made the right call. If he scores it's genius [to bring Noble on] and when David saves, it's the wrong call.'

'
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised Lingard for knuckling down after his error and taking his chance. Solskjaer said the Hammers were right to get a last-gasp penalty - which Mark Noble missed. Solskjaer did feel though that Ronaldo deserved a couple of penalties at the London Stadium

Solskjaer felt that Ronaldo should have been given two penalties of his own after tangles with Kurt Zouma and Vladimir Coufal, but Atkinson waved away the 36-year-old's vociferous protests on both occasions - although neither incident was deemed worthy of a booking for diving.

'We had two stonewall penalties, clear as day. I'm just hoping it's one of them where Cristiano Ronaldo never wins a penalty,' the United boss said.

The two teams don't have much time to recover before they meet again - their next clash is at Old Trafford on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup.

'He should be playing 40 to 45 games a season': Gary Neville doubles down on his claim that Jesse Lingard should have left Manchester United this summer after midfielder's late winner at West Ham

* Jesse Lingard scored a late winner for Manchester United against West Ham
* It came after he made a costly mistake during the game against Young Boys
* Lingard has not started a game after a successful loan spell last season
* Gary Neville believes Lingard should have left the Red Devils during the summer

Gary Neville has reiterated that Jesse Lingard should have left Manchester United in the summer to boost his chances of regular game time.

Lingard came off the bench on Sunday to score a late winner against West Ham, where he spent the second half of last season on loan.

The 28-year-old midfielder has yet to start a game for the Red Devils this season, playing just 63 minutes across four games in all competitions.

Neville said during his podcast on Sky Sports: 'I still maintain he should've left but he will have his moments.

'I was happy to see how he bounced back after what happened in Europe in midweek.

'To bounce back and score the winner is a fantastic moment for him. He's got good character, he's a very good player and I feel he should be playing 40-45 games a season.

Gary Neville believes Jesse Lingard (centre) should have left the club to get regular game time. Lingard scored a late winner for Manchester United against former side West Ham on Sunday. Gary Neville said United will benefit from having Lingard though he won't get much game-time. His goal against West Ham came after he made a costly mistake in the Champions League

'He won't get that at United in terms of 90-minute starts but he's one of those players that I do feel United will benefit from having.

'I just thought for Jesse himself, he should've left. United could be a better team with someone like Lingard in it.'

His goal against West Ham made up for a costly error during their 2-1 Champions League defeat to Young Boys where a poor back pass allowed the Swiss team to score a winner during stoppage time.

Lingard enjoyed a successful loan spell at the Hammers last season where he was a regular starter and scored nine goals in 16 appearances.

He seemed content to stay at Old Trafford this season though despite links of a permanent exit before the summer transfer window closed at the end of August.

With United adding Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho to an already stacked forward line with plenty of options also in midfield, chances to start games could come few and far between for Lingard at Old Trafford.

Lingard though was praised by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after his late winner which followed his struggles in Switzerland.

He said: 'You have to learn to live with the highs and the lows. He said sorry after Tuesday and everyone said that's not necessary. He came on and was brilliant.

'It was a great goal. I'm so happy for Jesse. Of course, he had a tough evening on Tuesday, but he's knuckled down and has worked hard again.

'He's been the same bright, positive lad, and what a goal. So happy for him. It was a great pass from Nemanja [Matic] and a good turn by Jesse.'

Default Re: Jesse Lingard

Rio Ferdinand insists Jesse Lingard can continue to be an 'asset' for Manchester United if they 'use him in the right way' after his winning goal against West Ham... and praises his 'different' movement off the ball

* Jesse Lingard scored a last-gasp winner for Manchester United at West Ham
* Lingard moved from villain to hero days on from his error against Young Boys
* Rio Ferdinand has now praised the playmaker for making an impact for United
* Former United defender Ferdinand also singled out the qualities Lingard brings

Rio Ferdinand has praised Jesse Lingard for making an impact after his rollercoaster week at Manchester United, and hailed the individual qualities he brings to the team.

Lingard has managed to move from villain to hero in just a matter of days, having made a horror mistake and handed Young Boys their winner in the Champions League before then scoring a last-gasp goal at West Ham.

And Ferdinand, despite admitting he would have urged Lingard to leave if he found his game time limited, believes that the playmaker is now flourishing once again.

'People were crying out for Jesse Lingard to go out on loan,' Ferdinand said on the latest Vibe with Five episode. 'Yeah, I agree. If he wasn't going to get opportunities, I would say "you've got to go."

Rio Ferdinand has hailed Jesse Lingard after his winner for Manchester United at West Ham. Lingard, who was brought on as a substitute, made a fine impact by picking out the top corner. Former United defender Ferdinand says the past week for Lingard sums up life as a footballer

'But it looks like Ole has said to him in the summer, "you're going to get opportunities, I'm going to give you game time. You've got to make an impact." And he's doing that.

'This is a great example of how you can be the villain one week and then three or four days later, you are the hero.

'This week for Jesse Lingard encapsulates exactly what it's like to be a footballer. He gave away a goal, held his hands up during the week. Everyone was saying he should be gone. Come this week, he gets thrown on and produces the goods.

'He bangs one in the top corner. I've got to say, I've got some things wrong. We all do. But with Jesse Lingard, I've been consistent. I've always said he's an asset to Manchester United if we use him in the right way.

'He's come on in this game and produced. I think he can do that all season if he's willing to play that role of coming in and being an impact player.'

Lingard's sloppy back pass just yards from his own goal proved enough to hand Young Boys the chance to secure a famous victory in Bern, and his team-mates and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looked to quickly rally around him.

Just four days on, the 28-year-old was mobbed after arrowing a stunning shot into the top corner at the London Stadium, and Ferdinand has also highlighted the particular aspects of his game that have stood out.

'He’s different,' he added. 'His movement off the ball is different to any of the players we have got, in terms of making himself available, making one or two touch, always on the move, and doing work off the ball too.

'And you need that variety in the team. They can’t all be similar players, he gives you that something different.'

Boss Solskjaer, who made the decision to throw Lingard into the tense fray for the final quarter at the weekend, heaped praise on his match-winner and, like Ferdinand, reflected on the unpredictable nature of life at the top.

But Lingard more than made amends after netting for United and securing them a crucial wi. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke glowingly of Lingard and his response after his mistaken

'You have to learn to live with the highs and the lows,' Solskjaer said.

'He said sorry after Tuesday and everyone said that's not necessary. He came on [today] and was brilliant.

Lingard's celebration was notably muted after he found the net, out of respect for his successful loan spell at West Ham during the second half of last season.
