Manchester United tried to sign Thomas Muller 'at all costs' this summer, claims super agent Giovanni Branchini

* Manchester United were keen to sign Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller
* Giovanni Branchini claims United tried everything to sign the German
* The 26-year-old remained in Bavaria amid rumours of a £71million bid

Manchester United wanted Thomas Muller 'at all costs' this summer, according to a super agent.

Giovanni Branchini says the Premier League leaders were willing to shell out whatever it took to bring the German star to Old Trafford from Bayern Munich.

The 26-year-old remained in Bavaria but Italian Branchini, amid rumours of a £71m bid, said it was not for a lack of trying on United's part.

Manchester United wanted Thomas Muller 'at all costs' this summer, according to a super agent

In a Q&A with calciomercato.com, he was asked to unveil a secret.

'Manchester United wanted Thomas Muller at all costs,' Branchini responded, before adding: 'I’ve spent days trying to explain Bayern Munich would never let him leave - so in the end they changed their mind.'

Branchini added that the bumper new Premier League TV deals have transformed the transfer market, meaning mid-table English clubs now have the financial muscle of Italian giants.

'English football is growing up very fast and it's not good for Italian football,' he said.

'For example, it could be more and more complicated to buy not only the biggest stars like Neymar but the second or third level too.

'At this moment Sunderland or Aston Villa can spend as well as Juventus or Milan do, because of the TV rights.'

MU Diminta Berhenti Goda Muller

Rummenigge: Tak Usah Repot-repot Tawar Muller, Man United!

Muller tetap menajdi pilihan utama jika ia sedang fit.

Manchester United need to stop emailing me about Thomas Muller! Karl-Heinz Rummenigge reiterates that Bayern Munich star is NOT for sale

* Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has issued several statements on Thomas Muller
* Bayern chief executive says German forward is not for sale at any price
* Rummenigge told Manchester United to stop emailing him about Muller
* The 26-year-old scored twice in Bayern's 5-1 win over Dortmund on Sunday

Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has sent a clear message to Manchester United – stop emailing about Thomas Muller.

Rummenigge, speaking after Bayern’s thumping of Borussia Dortmund on Sunday, reiterated that the Germany international, who scored twice in the 5-1 win, is not for sale.

‘I am not a banker. We are a football club,’ he is quoted by German television station Sport1. ‘That is why we never even considered selling Thomas Muller.

‘I told my colleagues at Manchester United: “I cannot close down my email account, but you no longer need to send me anything. It is useless.”’

It is not the first time Rummenigge has dismissed the notion of Muller moving to Old Trafford.

When asked about Muller’s availability in the summer, he said: ‘There are some players who don’t have any price tag. We would be out of our minds to sell Muller.’

The Manchester United target signed a lucrative deal at the Allianz last year which does not expire until 2019

Muller’s brace against Dortmund took him to eight Bundesliga goals this season and set a new German record in the process - Bayern have won the last 42 Bundesliga games in which the 26-year-old has scored.

He signed a lucrative deal at the Allianz Arena last year which will keep him under contract with the Bavarian giants until 2019.

Bayern sit seven points clear of Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga table, having won all of their first eight games.

Mueller Sebut Gaji di Premier League Menggiurkan
Lucas Aditya - detikSport

Munich - Pemain Bayern Munich, Thomas Mueller, membuat mengomentari besaran gaji para pemain Premier League.

Thomas Muller: The Premier League has too many foreigners and a move to Manchester United is not up for discussion!

* Thomas Muller believes England struggle at major tournaments because of the amount of foreigners in the Premier League
* Premier League had fewest home-born players in Europe's five big leagues last season at 35 per cent
* Muller was given his chance to impress at Bayern by Louis van Gaal
* The 26-year-old has played down suggestions he could join Man United

Thomas Muller is smiling and nodding. He recognises the scene. It is being explained to him that at Manchester United none of the players can start their lunch until Louis van Gaal gives the signal.

‘It was the same here,’ said Muller, given his chance by Van Gaal at Bayern Munich. ‘That was due to fact that if every player went to the buffet at the same time, they’d be waiting at the buffet. There was a bit more structure. The players had less stress at the buffet and those waiting could talk to each other.

‘You could say that was a bit excessive but everything he does has a reason. He doesn’t just do something for the sake of it. He has his logic. He wants his players to be together at the table and communicate with each other.’

Still, Muller, 26, recognises the controlling culture. Hang around Bayern Munich for long enough and you will find people who say that, despite one successful season, in the end Van Gaal’s obsession with discipline and structure became debilitating.

Muller is not among them. Hardly surprising; this is the man Van Gaal almost immediately promoted to the first team when he arrived in 2009. ‘Muller always plays,’ Van Gaal told the Press early on. And he did — and has done ever since.

On Tuesday he will be in London, to take on Arsenal as Bayern attempt to reach their third Champions League final in five years. He is at the peak of his career and scored the winner for Bayern in Saturday's 1-0 win at Werder Bremen, but affable and remarkably laid-back given that he is one of the top 10 players in world football at present.

That is often the Bayern way. They tend to create superstars at the club without the attendant entourage, fuss and attitude that often accompany a footballer of this status. If you were to pick one player who represents this Bayern side more than any other, it would be Muller, even if he himself is dismissive of the suggestion that the club has an iconic player.

Raised in Pahl, a small, rural town about 30 miles from Munich, he is a proper Bavarian boy who jokes about wearing lederhosen at home. He is a World Cup winner, a Champions League winner, four times Bundesliga winner and three times German Cup winner.

Club president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said recently that he represents the heart of Bayern and would never be sold. He also told Manchester United to stop emailing him about Muller’s availability, it being well known that United tried their utmost to sign him in the summer.

Arsenal too, made discreet inquires and soon realised there was no hope. The likelihood is that he will spend his career here — his contract runs until 2019 — but he does not entirely rule out the possibility of a move at some stage.

‘I heard what Rummenigge said and it’s nice for me to hear it,’ said Muller. ‘There are never any guarantees in football but I do have a four-year contract and when I go on the pitch and hear fans shout my name, that’s something special.’

Bayern Munich forward Muller (right) played under Louis van Gaal (left) during the Dutchman's spell at the club

But what about the club president’s quip about the incessant emails United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward keeps sending? ‘That was well said. I had to laugh about that. It was good,’ said Muller. And a move to United? ‘The club, as Rummenigge showed, denied it straight away, so it’s not up for discussion,’ he added. It does not seem like Muller will be playing in the Premier League any time soon, despite his recent comments about the attractiveness of its money being interpreted as a broad hint.

‘I was asked a question about money. So I just said we’re professionals and for us it’s about earning money and living our lives. The fans always have the idea about the romantic side and your love for the club.

‘On the other hand, football is a business and things happen very quickly. One day a director says this coach is staying, then he’s sacked three weeks later. You can’t forget it is a business and not just playing football for a hobby. That was what I was trying to say.’

The fact that Van Gaal is at the helm at United is partly why Muller is so desired at Old Trafford. The two players who perhaps benefited most from the Dutchman’s regime at Bayern were Muller and Bastian Schweinsteiger — and the latter has already joined his former manager.

And Muller knows that Van Gaal’s personality has been crucial to his development. The Dutchman has a determination to favour young players over established stars and Muller benefited from that at Bayern. He said: ‘If he’s convinced about the quality of a player then he’ll take the risk and try it with that player regardless of what the media or anybody else says. If he is convinced about something he will stick to his guns.’

But for the 20-year-old Muller, the public acknowledgement that ‘Muller always plays’ was less important to him than the private confidence shown in him by Van Gaal. ‘It wasn’t important that he said that,’ explained Muller. ‘But it was important he had confidence in me on the training ground and on the pitch. And that he helped me to develop at that stage.’

The tactical demands of Van Gaal were something else though. ‘There’s a lot of discipline,’ said Muller. ‘He demands discipline and everything is structured. There might be too much structure for some people. Van Gaal was always very intensive with his tactics. You had to work more with your head than your legs.

‘It’s similar with Pep Guardiola. With Jupp Heynckes [the manager who succeeded Van Gaal in 2011], his strength lay in his mentality and the way he handled players. We had tactical plans too but they weren’t too detailed and there was more freedom.’

The strain of playing under the intensity of the Guardiola regime appeared to show when he was substituted in last year’s Champions League semi-final at the Nou Camp after 79 minutes with the score at 1-0. Muller publicly demonstrated his anger but it was a short-lived display of discontent.

‘Naturally, I was frustrated to go off in a semi-final with the score at 1-0 for Barcelona,’ he said. ‘As a footballer you always want to win. I wanted to be the one to make it 1-1 and go on to put us 2-1 up. I went off so that wasn’t possible. I was a bit annoyed and frustrated but in sport you can’t always control your emotions. But it wasn’t a long-term problem.’

Still, you wonder whether Muller, the established star at 26, would enjoy playing for Van Gaal quite as much as the wide-eyed 20-year-old. ‘Difficult to say. When you’re young you take more on board, so I can’t judge that now,’ he said. ‘I played for him when I was young and not now. I can say I had a good time with him back then and I’ve got nothing negative to say about him.’

Within nine months of Van Gaal championing Muller as Bayern’s key man, he was busy dismantling England’s defence on a chastening afternoon in Bloemfontein. Muller was the man of the match in the 4-1 defeat in the last 16 of the 2010 World Cup.

He was an inexperienced ingénue but too much for John Terry, Gareth Barry and Matthew Upson. Muller though is extraordinarily polite about the South African humiliation. ‘It wasn’t easy,’ he said. ‘In football, everything looks easy in retrospect. It looks simple but it was close.

‘We were 2-1 up and Frank Lampard made it 2-2,’ he said, making ironic quotemarks with his fingers to indicate the ghost goal that never was. ‘We had two great counter-attacks to make it 3-1 and 4-1 and that settled the result. But it was a tight game before that incident. After the game, 4-1 makes it sound like there was a huge difference but I think it was much closer than that at certain points.’

Yet there is a huge difference between the achievements of Muller and his English colleagues at international level. The gap between English and German football may have been amplified at Bloemfontein but it surely exists.

‘Germany are a tournament team,’ said Muller. ‘I don’t know why that is, perhaps the mentality. We always look forward to tournaments. We also believe we can always perform well. I don’t know where that mentality started but we’re always very confident and we perform well under pressure.

‘In Brazil, we didn’t rely on just one particular player to save us. It was more 11, 12, 13 plus players performing together. There was a lot of quality in the team but we didn’t have individual players like Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. We weren’t dependent on one player. It’s important to have players with a lot of experience who can perform well and younger ones with power.

‘I think in Germany, after Euro 2000, there were big changes but I’m not the right man to ask as I don’t know the structure as well as older players who came through that system. I don’t know how it was done but we’ve got a lot of players with good technique in Germany.’

The fact that he was given his chance by Van Gaal at a major club perhaps represents the key difference between the German and English systems in recent years.

‘It would be easier for young English players if there were less foreign players there,’ he said. ‘It makes life very difficult to get in a top team because there are so many foreign players with such high quality. It’s true that you get your chance in Germany.’

Amid all the praise for Germany, it should not be forgotten that Muller was once part of a generation caricatured as serial losers. The German national team lost semi-finals in 2006, 2010 and 2012 and the Euro 2008 final. In 2012, Bayern lost the league and the cup final to Borussia Dortmund and the Champions League at home against Chelsea.

Muller scored the late goal that seemed to have won Bayern the trophy and came off after 87 minutes — a minute before Didier Drogba equalised. ‘That was very tough because we all knew we were the better team and that we should have won the match,’ said Muller, who scored the only goal on Saturday as Bayern became the first club to win their opening nine Bundesliga games with a victory at Werder Bremen that puts them seven points clear at the top.

‘It was madness. I was exhausted after 85 minutes and said we might want to think about a substitution. And then you think there’s only another five minutes to go. The game will be over, you’d have won and all’s well. Then you’re faced with that **** situation. It was like watching a horror film.’

That is why Bayern’s 2013 Champions League win arguably laid the foundations for the 2014 World Cup victory. ‘It helped us because the generation around Schweinsteiger and Philipp Lahm finished second and third and never won anything,’ he said.

He denies that he ever entertained the thought they might not ever get over the line. ‘No, you don’t think that. It’s always the Press coming up with, “You’re second best”. But we won the Champions League and that gave us a lot of confidence.’

So Champions League winner, World Cup winner, multiple league and cup winner at 26: what motivates him for the rest of his career? ‘We’re not playing for the title to just go on the honours’ board but to win the next title and get the feeling from achieving something together. That’s what football’s about.’
