Rooney reaches 100: Highs and Lows

As Wayne Rooney prepares to win his 100th England cap, we recall the highs and lows of the striker's 11 years on the international stage.

From scoring his first international goal at the age of just 17 to seeing red against Portugal and seething at booing England fans in South Africa, Rooney has rarely been out of the media spotlight during his Three Lions career.

Through it all he has continued to score at an impressive rate - aside from at World Cups - and looks set to soon break Bobby Charlton's record of 49 England goals.

But what have been Rooney's five standout moments in an England shirt so far?

Fast starter - Rooney opens England account aged 17

Just a few months after becoming the youngest player to ever appear for England, Rooney became the country's youngest scorer when he netted in a crucial Euro 2004 qualifier against Macedonia.

With England trailing at half-time, Rooney, aged just 17 years and 317 days, provided the second-half spark his side needed as he finished smartly from Emile Heskey's knockdown to level the scores. England would go on to win the game 2-1 and secure top spot in their group to qualify for Euro 2004.

Writing on his Facebook page after the game, Rooney said: "I'll never forget the special feeling of scoring my first goal for England, and to do it in a European Qualifier made it even better.

"To be honest it was more a feeling of relief because I'd already played in a few games so you start to wonder when it's going to come, but thankfully it did in that game against Macedonia!"

Rooney had made his England debut earlier that year in a friendly against Australia that ended in a 3-1 defeat.

Euro vision - Rooney lights up Euro 2004

It says plenty about Rooney's international career that his first international tournament in 2004 probably remains his finest.

After England's dramatic defeat to France in their opening Euro 2004 group game, Rooney got his side up and running with two goals against Switzerland, in the process becoming the youngster scorer in the history of the tournament.

Although that record would be broken a few days later by Switzerland's Johan Vonlanthen, Rooney further enhanced his reputation with another brace against Croatia to ensure England's progression to the quarter-finals.

Unfortunately a sensational tournament turned sour for the striker in the last eight as he was forced off with a metatarsal injury against Portugal and England were dumped out on penalties.

Nevertheless, Rooney still made UEFA's Team of the Tournament and was lauded by manager Sven-Goran Eriksson as the greatest teenage talent to emerge since Pele.

World Cup woe - Rooney sees red in Germany

While almost everything went right for Rooney at Euro 2004, that was certainly not the case two years later at the World Cup in Germany.

For starters there were doubts over whether he would even make the tournament after fracturing a metatarsal bone while playing for Manchester United in April, just six weeks before England's opening game against Paraguay.

However, with the help of an oxygen tent, Rooney not only made it to Germany but appeared in group games against Trinidad and Tobago and Sweden, as well as the last-16 win over Ecuador.

With a quarter-final clash against Portugal next, the stage was set for England to avenge their agonising defeat from two years earlier. Unfortunately for Rooney it would again be a night to forget as he was sent off in the second half for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho's groin.

While the headlines the following day would focus largely on a winking Cristiano Ronaldo and more shooutout heartbreak for England, there was no glossing over a frustrating moment in Rooney's international career.

Fanfare - Rooney lashes out in South Africa

After missing out on qualification for the European Championships in 2008, hopes were high that England could return with a bang at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

They had breezed through qualifying on the back of Rooney's nine goal-haul and looked to be strong favourites in a group containing the United States, Slovenia and Algeria.

However, after labouring to a 2-2 draw with the USA, England were then held to a goalless draw by Algeria, a result that prompted booing from fans at the final whistle.

Clearly not happy with the reaction, Rooney vented his frustration to TV cameras as he left the pitch, saying: "Nice to see your home fans booing you. That's loyal supporters."

Although the striker issued a swift apology his comments drew fierce criticism from England supporters both at home and in South Africa. Rooney was not able to atone further in the last 16 as England were thumped 4-1 by Germany and sent home after another disappointing tournament.

Wildest dreams - Rooney handed England captaincy

"It is something I will take massive pride in doing. To be appointed captain is beyond my wildest dreams."

While not everyone was completely convinced on the merits of appointing Rooney as captain following the disastrous World Cup in Brazil, there was little doubting the striker's own delight at the decision.

Already a captain at club level for Manchester United, Roy Hodgson said that he was an 'obvious choice' to take the armband from Steven Gerrard ahead of the likes of Joe Hart and Gary Cahill.

Although he had yet again failed to shine at Euro 2012, when England were again dumped out on penalties, and in Brazil, where he finally scored his first World Cup goal, he was still the talisman of the side.

Some questioned whether Hodgson made the move in a bid to spur Rooney on to greater heights, only time will tell whether that is the case and whether the move turns out to be a success.

Century: Rooney will become the youngest player ever to reach 100 caps by nearly three years

Mirror - 14 November 2014 Aaron*Flanagan
Wayne Rooney's 100th cap in numbers: How does England's newest centurion compare to past greats?
How does the Manchester United captain shape up against the all-time greats? We dig up all the stats you could possibly need

Wayne Rooney will join the elite group of players that have made 100 appearances for England when he lines up against Slovenia this weekend.

The Manchester United star will become the ninth player in history to achieve the feat, but will be the youngest player in history to do so - by nearly three years.

That golden 100th cap will come in the game against Slovenia, as England continue their stroll though Euro 2016 qualifying.

But Rooney is yet to be considered as an England great, despite being well on his way to posting up record-breaking numbers.

Maybe it is the lack of success on the national stage, or maybe it is the one of two hints of ill-discipline which have marred his career.

Even Rooney himself says that he will not be considered an England great unless he wins the World Cup for the country.

But either way, Rooney has been a mainstay in the England line-ups since his debut against Australia in 2003.

Here is how he compares to those other players who have reached England's peak...

The eight players who have already reached the lofty heights of 100 caps for England are Peter Shilton, David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Bobby Moore, Ashley Cole, Bobby Charlton, Frank Lampard and Billy Wright.

But with age on his side, it is likely that Rooney will top the chart and become the leading appearance-maker ever for England.

With an average of eight international fixtures on a non-tournament year - more if England secure a place in the knock-out stages of the European Championships or 2018 World Cup - it could just be three years before that feat is reached.

Rooney is about to smash the record to become the youngest England centurion is history - and will do so by nearly three years.

The achievement is partly down to the increase in qualifying fixtures in the modern day international regime, but prime fitness levels and consistent performances have helped.

Ashley Cole missed out on Bobby Charlton's record by just three months, while the oldest player to edge over the 100-cap mark was Peter Shilton, who was 38 years and eight months.

Frank Lampard was the oldest outfield player at 35 years and two months.

Out of England's centurions, only one other is in the top five England goalscorers of all time: Bobby Charlton.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time, he was a constant goal threat through his time in the England line-up, scoring 49 goals - topping the all-time charts.

But Rooney is fast approaching that total. Not only that, Rooney is the first ever striker to reach the 100 cap mark, meaning that bar Charlton, he significantly has more goals than any other in the 100 club.

While mentioning goalscorers, we compared how Rooney's goals-per-minute rate compared to the other top marksmen in England history.

Jimmy Greaves was the most prolific player to wear the famous Three Lions, while Rooney, who is now captain of the country, can bolster his record in the coming year's qualifiers.

Rooney will lead the team out for the sixth time in the game against Slovenia; the fourth since he was handed the captaincy on a permanent basis.

Fabio Capello was criticised for giving Rooney, then just 24-years-old, the armband for a friendly match with Brazil, but he was not the first 100 club member to reach captaincy at an early age.

Bobby Moore was at the tender age of just 22 years and 46 days old when he led out the team, while Steven Gerrard was announced as England captain for a game before turning 24.

So that is how Rooney compares to the other players who have made over 100 appearances for the famous Three Lions.

With age on his side, Rooney will continue to enhance his legacy; it is a case of when, not if, he becomes the all-time top scorer.

One hundred caps ticked off, next stop is all-time most appearances. 26 games to go - and years of Rooney's presence still to come.

TUESDAY NOVEMBER 11 2014
WAYNE GOES BACK TO HIS PRIMARY SCHOOL TO CELEBRATE HIS 100TH ENGLAND CAP
Wayne will join England greats who have won 100 caps when he leads the national team out for their Euro 2016 qualifier against Slovenia on Saturday.

To mark becoming just England’s ninth centurion, the skipper followed in the footsteps of his illustrious predecessors Bobby Moore and Steven Gerrard by returning to his primary school to celebrate the milestone among excited youngsters back where he started kicking a ball around.

The result of a day to remember at Our Lady and St Swithin’s Roman Catholic Primary School in Croxteth was a fabulous set of pictures and an iconic video of Wayne plus 99 excited young pupils, all wearing England shirts. Wayne attended the school until the age of 11.

For the pictures Wayne himself wore one of his treasured England caps and took time out to sign the England shirt worn by every pupil – which the youngsters will keep as their own treasured memento of the day the England skipper returned to his former school.

Wayne said: “Becoming captain of England was a dream come true for me. It’s an amazing feeling to come back here, where I went to school as a young boy, and being able to tell youngsters that dreams really can come true. I’m very proud of where I’m from and it’s always good to come back here.”

Head teacher Sandra Hamilton said: “’Wayne’s been an absolute superstar coming back to share his honour among youngsters growing up in the same area as he did. He’s given all his time to the children, signed all their shirts and had his picture taken. It’s almost like he’s never been away!” She added: “Wayne gives the children self-belief and he has got every value that we value. He is mature and resilient; a leader. He is world-class. We look at him as a wonderful family man and are extremely proud of everything that he does.”

Wayne has never forgotten his old school, sending regular personalised mementos of his amazing career including signed balls and an England shirt. When he arrived at the school to meet the children and do the pictures, he was greeted by the Head and passed the cabinet in which his signed gifts are displayed before being introduced by Mrs Hamilton to cheering youngsters.

Wayne has enjoyed many great days winning his 99 England caps, plus five Premier League winners’ medals and playing in three Champions League Finals. But his return to the Primary school where he used to practice his skills in the school yard along with fellow pupils 20 years ago clearly made a huge impression on him – as well as on 99 thrilled pupils.

As he looked around his old stomping ground, Wayne reflected: “I remember being up on that stage in the school choir. I had a solo part in a play one year and I didn’t fancy it (singing) again! The memories do come back, obviously. There have been one or two changes but it is still as much as I remember it. When you are here as a kid, you think it is absolutely massive, the building and everything. I used to think the schoolyard was as big as three football pitches. So it was special to come back, of course it was. It was a great day.’

The schoolchildren and all Wayne’s legions of England and Manchester United fans will be hoping that the skipper has many more – starting with a win when he leads England out for his 100th cap on Saturday.

Rooney's landmark moments

With Wayne Rooney poised to earn his 100th England cap this weekend, we’re recalling some of the Manchester United skipper’s other international landmarks.

History maker: Wayne made his senior international debut on 12 February 2003, as a 46th-minute substitute for Michael Owen in a friendly against Australia at Upton Park. Aged just 17 years and 110 days, this made him England’s youngest-ever player at the time (Theo Walcott holds that distinction now). Wayne reflected on his Facebook page this week: “To put that shirt on for the first time and walk out as an England player was one of the proudest moments of my career. To play for your country is a massive honour. I wasn’t happy that we lost the game against Australia [3-1] but the feeling of walking out with the team was unbelievable and a dream come true!”

Off the mark: Wayne’s first international goal came in his sixth England game, against Macedonia, in a 2-1 away win on 6 September 2003. David Beckham was the other scorer, from the penalty spot. Rooney says: “I'll never forget the special feeling of scoring my first goal for*England, and to do it in a European qualifier made it even better. To be honest, it was more a feeling of relief because I’d already played in a few games so you start to wonder when it’s going to come, but thankfully it did in that game against Macedonia!” **

Finding his feet at OT: Wayne’s first goal in an England home match came four days after he opened his account away to Macedonia. Rooney was still an Everton player at the time but his 52nd-minute strike in the 2-0 victory over Liechtenstein was, of course, the first of his many goals at Old Trafford…

Tournament time: It looked as if it would be a dream tournament debut for Wayne as England led 1-0 against holders France in their opening match of Euro 2004. However, Zinedine Zidane struck twice in stoppage time to steal the game for Les Bleus.

Precise against the Swiss: Wayne scored his first tournament goals when grabbing a brace against Switzerland in an impressive 3-0 England win at Euro 2004. He says on Facebook: “Just going to a big tournament as part of the squad was a huge honour for me, but to score two in the second game was something I won't forget. My favourite goal was my first one, it was a great cross by Michael Owen and I managed to get my head on it!” He netted two more goals in the last group game against Croatia before England were knocked out by Portugal on penalties. Rooney’s form on the big stage at Euro 2004 helped to seal his £27million move to United months later.

Wayne sees red:
Wayne was sent off for the first time in an international shirt against Portugal in the 2006 World Cup, after he was deemed to stamp on Portugal’s Ricardo Carvalho by referee Horacio Elizondo. Cristiano Ronaldo’s reaction to the incident – he was caught on camera winking to his colleagues – sparked media suggestions that he would struggle to play with Rooney again for United. But the two players rubbished that theory when both started and scored in the Reds’ opening win of the new season, a 5-1 win at home to Fulham.

Half a century: Wayne earned his 50th cap on 1 April 2009 against Ukraine in a 2-1 World Cup qualifying win at Wembley, six years and two months after his international debut.*

Wearing the armband: Wayne was made England captain by Fabio Capello for a friendly against Brazil, on 14 November 2009, in the lead-up to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Unfortunately Rooney’s big day in Doha, Qatar, didn’t go to plan on the field as England were beaten 1-0 by a 47th-minute strike from Nilmar.

Breaking a duck: After not scoring in the 2006 or 2010 tournaments, Wayne bagged his first World Cup goal during Brazil 2014 in the 75th minute of England’s second group game against Uruguay. Unfortunately, the Three Lions lost the match 2-1 and were eliminated after picking up only one point in the group stage. Rooney’s strike was a rare bright moment for the millions of expectant England fans watching at home.

It’s official: Wayne became England’s official captain in the wake of England’s disappointing World Cup campaign in Brazil and Steven Gerrard’s decision to retire from international football. Rooney was appointed on 28 August 2014 by manager Roy Hodgson and then led the team out against Norway in a friendly a few days later. Wayne says on Facebook: “To be named as England captain was a dream come true for me and my family and something I am extremely proud of.” It was the second time in a matter of weeks that Rooney had been made permanent captain of a team - Louis van Gaal named him as United’s skipper earlier in the month.

The 100 Club: On Saturday, Wayne looks set to join an elite group of players to have made 100 or more appearances for England. Peter Shilton still holds the record number of caps (125) with the most capped outfield player being David Beckham (115). Then follows Steven Gerrard (114), Bobby Moore (108), Ashley Cole (107), Sir Bobby Charlton (106), Frank Lampard (106) and Billy Wright (105).
