Mick McCarthy sacked as Wolves manager after West Brom defeat

Wolves have sacked boss Mick McCarthy following Sunday's 5-1 home thrashing by Black Country rivals West Brom.



McCarthy has been in charge at Molineux since July 2006 but his side have won only one of their last 13 matches.

"Mick McCarthy has done a fantastic job but if we continued in this way we were definitely going to be relegated," said Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey.

"The trend was only going one way and when we lost 5-1 at home to West Brom we had to act," he added.

"This has been a decision we've taken with a heavy heart but we have to act in the best interests of the club," Moxey told Sky Sports News.

"We've had brilliant times with Mick McCarthy and it is sad it has come to an end. But I'm sure it won't be long before he's back in management.

"We now have two weeks until our next game against Newcastle, which is enough time to find a new manager and turn our fortunes around."

McCarthy said: "I feel we've achieved a lot, both for me personally and as a club.

"I really feel it is a privilege to have managed such a great club and I've had the best of times.

"I want to send my best wishes to everybody and also to the new guy that comes in - and to everyone. Please stay up!"

Sunday's loss saw Wolves drop into the relegation zone on goal difference, having collected only 21 points from 25 games.

Some fans vented their anger towards the directors' box during the match and a couple of hundred demonstrated outside the ground long after the final whistle.

Charles Ross, editor of A Load Of Bull, a Wolves fanzine, agreed with the club's decision but questioned the timing.

"I'm not surprised by the board's decision given the scale, the enormity, the shock of yesterday's defeat, and the opponents, the context of the game, and when it came in the season. The worst possible set of circumstances all conspired yesterday, particularly the manner of the defeat. That hurt.

"But it's the wrong time to sack a manager," Ross told BBC Sport. "He should have gone in the early autumn when they started on a bad run and you could see the wheels were coming off."

Club owner Steve Morgan, who is on a skiing holiday, decided to act 13 games before the end of the Premier League campaign.

With Wolves not involved in the FA Cup next weekend, they do not play until the trip to Newcastle on 25 February, with bookmakers making former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez and ex-West Ham United manager Alan Curbishley favourites to replace McCarthy.

The club began the season by taking seven points from their opening three games, but a 2-0 home defeat by Tottenham prompted an alarming slide.

They have not kept a clean sheet since August's draw with Aston Villa and the fans' anger towards McCarthy boiled over when they trailed Swansea 2-0 in October, although they recovered to draw 2-2.

The 2-1 win at QPR on 4 February ended a run of 11 games without a win in all competitions but the West Brom loss was a fourth successive home defeat.

Former Wolves and England boss Graham Taylor told BBC 5 live: "Mick McCarthy has had a tremendous five-and-a-half years at Wolves. Steve Morgan, the chairman, probably feels they just need a positive change to get the number of points they need to stay up.

"Managers are responsible for results but players are responsible for their performances. I watched the game and a number of the Wolves players should be looking at themselves.

"A 5-1 defeat at home to West Brom? You'll do well to survive that."

Wolves midfielder Jamie O'Hara responded on Twitter to McCarthy's dismissal.

"Gutted to see Mick go, done an amazing job here and everyone should be thankful for what he's done," he tweeted.

"Thank him so much for giving me the chance to play football every week, just sorry we couldn't have done better for him.

"Fantastic manager and man and wish him all the best."

McCarthy led Wolves to the top flight as winners of the Championship in 2008-09 and they finished 15th the following season.

They survived relegation last term thanks to Stephen Hunt's goal against Blackburn with three minutes to go on the final day of the campaign.

Alan Curbishley pulls out of running for Wolves job

Alan Curbishley has pulled out of the running to succeed Mick McCarthy as Wolves manager, BBC Sport understands.



The former Charlton and West Ham boss is believed to have dropped out because he and chairman Steve Morgan did not share the same vision for the club.

Curbishley, 54, was interviewed for the job along with former Sunderland boss Steve Bruce and Neil Warnock.

However, Warnock has since taken over at Leeds, leaving Bruce as favourite to take over the Black Country side.

Bruce, who has 10 years' experience as a Premier League manager, is available after being sacked by Sunderland in November 2011.

The 51-year-old cut his managerial teeth at Sheffield United in the 1998-99 season and also had short spells as boss at Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace before moving to Birmingham in December 2001.

He spent almost six years at St Andrew's, guiding the club to promotion to the Premier League in his first season and, following relegation in 2005-06, he took the club straight back up.

Bruce left Birmingham for a second spell as Wigan manager in November 2007 before moving on to Sunderland in the summer of 2009.

Wolves are understood to want to hold a second round of interviews with potential candidates, although chief executive Jez Moxey said last week that he was confident of appointing a new manager before the game against Newcastle on 25 February.

Wolves to ask Reading permission to talk to manager Brian McDermott

Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to seek permission from Reading to speak to the manager Brian McDermott after identifying the 50-year-old as a prime candidate to replace Mick McCarthy, who was sacked last week.

The Midlands club have altered their stance after initially stating Premier League experience was a vital ingredient for any possible successor to McCarthy.

The former Sunderland, Wigan Athletic and Birmingham City manager Steve Bruce remains a contender after holding initial talks with the Wolves owner Steve Morgan and the chief executive Jez Moxey on Friday.

But McDermott is now at the forefront of Wolves's plans although they have denied speculation claiming they have already held talks with the former Arsenal player.

McDermott stepped in for Brendan Rodgers as the Reading caretaker manager in December 2009 and earned the job on a full-time basis the following month after his side achieved a shock FA Cup win over Liverpool.

He led Reading to the play-off final last season and has mounted another strong promotion challenge this season despite the loss of the striker Shane Long and the defender Matt Mills in the summer.

McDermott is also likely to have the support in the Wolves dressing room of the striker Kevin Doyle and midfielder Stephen Hunt, who worked with him at Reading before moving to Molineux.

Moxey has maintained a stance of not commenting on specific names on the radar of himself and Morgan. But it is understood Wolves have distanced themselves from reports linking them with the Brighton and Hove Albion manager Gus Poyet.

Bruce impressed when meeting Morgan and Moxey but there has been a negative reaction to his possible appointment from some sections of fans.

Agent calms Benitez speculation



Rafael Benitez's agent insists there has been no official approach from Chelsea and said the position would only be considered "once there is an offer".

Reports in both the London Evening Standard and The Times have suggested Chelsea have lined up Benitez as a potential successor to Andre Villas-Boas.

The Spaniard is currently available, having been out of work since his brief spell at Inter Milan in 2010, and his impressive record in Europe may appeal to Blues owner Roman Abramovich.

However, Manuel Garcia Quilon - while ruling nothing out - says the Blues are yet to make any kind of approach at this stage.

"There is nothing official," he said. "It's only media speculation and we have not been approached by Chelsea. We would only evaluate that possibility once there is an offer."

He added: "Benitez's priority is to coach in the Premier League."

Villas-Boas has maintained that he retains the full support of Abramovich despite the club's disappointing performance in the league and this week's Champions League defeat to Napoli.

As the Premier League season reaches the business end, Willie Duncan looks at the managers who may feel that they have a less than certain future at their respective clubs



The season may be drawing to a close but, often, this is a time of year when the managerial axe is sharpened by many a football chairman.

Paddy Power’s odds compilers have been thinking about which gaffer’s position might be under the most intense scrutiny and, accordingly, have compiled a “Premier League Sack Race” market to determine which manager will be next to leave their post. It is a market which is often dominated by managers of clubs involved in a relegation dogfight, but that is not the case this year.

Indeed, the market is headed up by Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish at 2/1 (3.0). Dalglish’s side currently lie seventh in the Premier League table but, following Sunday’s defeat to Newcastle United, they now trail the Magpies in sixth by a massive 11 points.

Despite League Cup success and an impending FA Cup semi-final against Merseyside rivals Everton, Liverpool have collected the second lowest points tally in the league since the turn of the year.

That explains Paddy Power’s 2/1 (3.0) quote on the Scot to be the next manager to depart his club. That price has been popular with punters as Liverpool's league form continues to stutter.

Tottenham Hotspur look on course for a top-four finish and are still in the running for FA Cup success but boss Harry Redknapp is 5/1 (6.0) in Paddy Power’s market due, of course, to intense speculation that he will leave Spurs for the England post.

Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City have been synonymous with success this season until their exit from Europe and a couple of wobbly performances in the Premier League.

It now looks entirely possible that the Citizens will end the season empty handed – a prospect which will not sit well with the club’s owners so it comes as little surprise to see Mancini at just 12/1 (13.0) with Paddy Power to become the next manager to depart, which could offer some value to those seeking a longer-priced bet.

One manager who has found it a struggle this season is Alex McLeish. He was not a popular choice with the Aston Villa faithful when he took charge at Villa Park, having arrived from bitter rivals Birmingham City, and with the Villans sliding towards the drop zone, McLeish is just 3/1 (4.0) with Paddy Power to be relieved of his duties sooner rather than later.

As ever, the managerial sack race provides an interesting sideshow as the season reaches its exciting conclusion.
