England ace Marcus Rashford says children 'will go to bed feeling hungry and worthless' tonight as he blasted MPs for rejecting plans to provide free school meals during the Easter holidays.

The Manchester United forward, who has been a strong campaigner on the issue, lashed out on Twitter as a Labour motion to extend the scheme was rejected by 322 votes to 261 - a majority of 61.

It was the latest setback in his plea for the Government to fund hot meals for the most needy children during coronavirus lockdowns.

Five Conservative MPs rebelled to support the motion, according to the division list.

They were: Caroline Ansell (Eastbourne), Robert Halfon (Harlow), Jason McCartney (Colne Valley), Anne Marie Morris (Newton Abbot) and Holly Mumby-Croft (Scunthorpe).

Taking to social media tonight, Rashford wrote: 'Put aside all the noise, the digs, the party politics and let's focus on the reality.

'A significant number of children are going to bed tonight not only hungry but feeling like they do not matter because of comments that have been made today.

'We must stop stigmatising, judging and pointing fingers. Our views are being clouded by political affiliation.

'This is not politics, this is humanity.'


Taking to Twitter today after scoring the late winner that saw Man Utd beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 last night, Marcus Rashford turned the blowtorch on the Government by urging his 3.4 million Twitter followers to lobby their MPs. Tonight, Rashford wrote: ''A significant number of children are going to bed tonight not only hungry but feeling like they do not matter'

Rashford added that child food poverty 'has the potential to become the greatest pandemic the country has ever faced'.

'We must start working together and unite to protect our most vulnerable children. No more sticking plasters. Let's face this head on,' he said.

He said the requirements of the Child Food Poverty Taskforce remain the same, adding: 'Following private and public approaches, I once again invite Number 10 to sit around the table with the taskforce so that, together, we can collaborate on how best to combat child poverty in the UK.'

Labour had tried to use the Commons vote today to call for free school meals to be extended over each school holiday from October half-term to Easter 2021 and appeared to have won the support of some rebel Tories, including Mr Halfon, chairman of the Commons Education Committee, who said the scheme should run until the spring at least.

However, the vote failed in a heated debate where one Tory MP suggested that reducing the length of the school summer holidays could help tackle food insecurity.

Jonathan Gullis (Stoke-on-Trent North), a former secondary school teacher, made the call this evening, telling the Commons: 'If we were to have a serious discussion about how to tackle this issue, one way in which we can do that is by reducing the summer holiday from six weeks to four weeks.

'Because it costs £133 per week on average, the costs of childcare, and if we take those two weeks and redistribute them, one in October half-term and one in the May half-term.

'Therefore, we can help to bring down the cost of the summer holiday on the parents and enable those parents to better... access the food that they of course need.

'Free school meals are indeed important, but it is the role of the school to educate, not the role of the school to be the welfare state.'

It follows calls by former Tory education secretary Damian Hinds, who said earlier this month that the school holidays should be staggered in 2021 to extend the tourism season.

Earlier in the debate, Mr Gullis outlined his experience of teaching in schools in deprived areas.

He added: 'I refuse to be lectured by members opposite who have not walked in my shoes.

'I spent eight years of my life working as a secondary school teacher in which the overwhelming majority was as a head of year working in some of the most disadvantaged parts of London and of Birmingham, seeing the impact of child poverty and child hunger and the impact of not having a stable family and good role models as well crime and drugs in a local community.'

Deputy leader Angela Rayner tweeted after the vote: 'Tonight I voted to feed our country's vulnerable and needy children.

'The Tories voted to let them go hungry.

'I voted for workers facing hardship in areas under lockdown to get 80% of their incomes.

'The Tories voted against it.

'That's all you need to know.'

Responding to Rashford's statement, Greater Manchester's mayor Andy Burnham tweeted: 'Fantastic words Marcus.

'You shouldn't have had to listen to some of those ignorant speeches in Westminster today. But, then again, they show why your campaign is so vitally needed.

'Keep going, we're all behind you #NoChildGoesHungry '

Several Conservative MPs argued against Labour's proposal, with Brendan Clarke-Smith (Bassetlaw) saying he did not believe in 'nationalising children'.

He told the Commons: 'Where is the slick PR campaign encouraging absent parents to take some responsibility for their children?

'I do not believe in nationalising children.

'Instead, we need to get back to the idea of taking responsibility, and this means less celebrity virtue-signalling on Twitter by proxy and more action to tackle the real causes of child poverty.'

Tory David Simmonds (Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner) also said: 'What does it say about the Opposition's priorities that all of their interests are simply swept aside in favour of currying favour with wealth and power and celebrity status, spending taxpayers' money to curry favour with celebrity status, wealth and power.

'Now I have no doubt that Mr Rashford is an expert in his own experience, but we should not forget that the experiences he so movingly described took place under a Labour government then supposedly at the peak of its powers in tackling child poverty in this country.'

Tory minister Paul Scully also told the BBC that 'children have been going hungry under a Labour government for years' and insisted the Government had been tackling the issue.

But Conservative Mr Halfon urged the Government to continue providing meals over the holidays while the coronavirus crisis was ongoing and called on ministers to work with Rashford.

The footballer continued: 'I don't have the education of a politician, many on Twitter have made that clear today, but I have a social education having lived through this and having spent time with the families and children most affected.

'These children matter. These children are the future of this country. They are not just another statistic. And for as long as they don't have a voice, they will have mine. You have my word on that.'

For Labour, shadow education secretary Kate Green said: 'Boris Johnson and the Conservatives have badly let down more than one million children and their families.

'No child should go hungry over the holidays, but the Government is blocking the action needed to prevent this.

'We pay tribute to Marcus Rashford and others for shining a spotlight on this incredibly important issue.

'This campaign is not over and the Government must reconsider.'

Kevin Courtney, joint general secretary of the National Education Union, branded the result of the vote as 'callous', adding: 'No MP who voted against this will be going hungry tonight, not one of them will be wondering where their next meal is coming from and not one of them will struggle through every single day with insufficient food.

'This isn't right. No child should return to school after the half term break too hungry to learn.'

It came after a minister yesterday insisted people would rather pay than accept the 'label' attached with handouts.

Just hours after scoring the late winner that saw Man Utd beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 last night, Mr Rashford this morning turned the blowtorch on the Government in advance of the vote by urging his 3.4 million Twitter followers to lobby their MPs.

'Paying close attention to the Commons today and to those who are willing to turn a blind eye to the needs of our most vulnerable children, 2.2M of them who currently qualify for Free School Meals,' he said.

But former Brexit minister Steve Baker responded angrily, saying: 'No one will be turning a blind eye and it is wrong to suggest anyone would.'

Mr Rashford replied: 'At least turn on your comments and let me respond Steve. I very much welcome conversation on this.'

Mansfield Tory MP Ben Bradley later waded in, saying: 'We're doing A LOT to help the most vulnerable children, but ever-extending freebies are a sticking plaster not a solution.'

In the Commons, Boris Johnson continued to resist calls for a change of tack.

'We support kids on low incomes in school and we will continue to do so,' he told MPs at Prime Minister's Questions.

The asks of the Child Food Poverty Taskforce remain the same. We are endorsing Government-commissioned policy recommendations that were built from extensive research and data analysis. These policies are vital to stabilising millions of households across the UK and need to be implemented without delay.

Child hunger should never be faced with looming deadlines.

We need a long-term sustainable framework, and thanks to the 300,00+ signatures, we will now be offered the opportunity to discuss this.

Following private and public approaches, I once again invited Number 10 to sit around the table with the Taskforce, so that, together, we can collaborate on how best to combat child food poverty in the UK.

'But the most important thing is to keep them in school and not tear off into another national lockdown taking them out of school.

'We will continue to use the benefits system and all the systems of income to support children throughout the holidays as well.'

A parliamentary petition started by the England star, which demands food be provided during all holidays and for free school meals to be expanded to all households on Universal Credit, has garnered around 300,000 signatures since being launched late last week.

Mr Rashford, who has been made an MBE for his services to vulnerable children, forced a Government U-turn on free school meal vouchers for eligible pupils over the summer holidays.

The fact that his petition has attracted more than 100,000 signatures means it must now be considered for debate by MPs, under Parliamentary petition guidelines.

Deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner said the Government was spending money on consultants rather than school children living in districts designated Tier 2 and Tier 3 Covid-19 alert areas during the coronavirus pandemic.

'This vote is about our values as a country and whether the Government, in the middle of this crisis, is happy to let our children go hungry,' she added.

Mr Halfon said earlier he could support a Labour motion calling for their extension to next Easter in the Commons on Wednesday.

'I will either vote for the motion or abstain depending on what the Government says,' he told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme.

He added: 'What the Government needs to do is to have a long-term plan, sit down with the taskforce set up by Marcus Rashford and actually come up with a serious plan and a budget to deal with this problem.

'All the statistics show that families are struggling. We know that 10% of families are affected by food insecurity.

'I am not arguing this should happen for ever but the free school meals should at least go on until we are out of the coronavirus, god willing, by next spring.'

Devon MP Anne Marie Morris said she would also support the Labour plan.

'The ongoing pandemic has had a heavy impact on many across Teignbridge, bringing with it significant economic difficulties for many,' she said.

'This is why I am supporting the motion calling for the continuation of direct funding for FSM over school holidays until Easter 2021.

'This time-limited measure is a perfectly sensible response as we deal with the economic consequences of Covid-19. Longer-term I believe it is right that those eligible should be supported through the Holidays & Activities Food Programme and the Universal Credit system.'

However, Downing Street has shown reluctance to extend the scheme, with a spokesman indicating last Thursday that ministers would not provide free school meals to children in England during the Christmas break.

Yesterday, millionaire Business Minister Nadhim Zahari insisted struggling parents would rather pay than accept the 'label' attached to handouts.

He said Universal Credit benefits were available to support hard-pressed families and suggested that research from holiday clubs shows that parents prefer to pay a small sum for food.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: 'The research when we did the pilot demonstrates that families didn't just want the meals.

'Although they valued the meals, they didn't like the labelling of them being free. They actually prefer to pay a modest amount, £1 or £2.'

Marcus Rashford is set to be omitted from the BBC Sports Personality of the Year shortlist despite being the bookies' odds-on favourite to win the award.

The Manchester United forward has been tipped to claim the prize in December following his high-profile and popular free school meals campaign.

But Sportsmail understands Rashford, 22, is likely to miss out based on long-standing criteria for the award which state that the shortlist must reflect 'sporting achievements'.

A judging panel will meet next month to decide the shortlist and, while the criteria for 2020 has not yet been confirmed and the panel have the right to make alterations, it has been set in stone for several years.

It is not anticipated to change unless there is a reaction to public pressure.

BBC bosses are aware of the potential for a backlash if Rashford is not included and would look to honour him in some way during the show on December 20 — which is being held in Salford without the usual large audience because of Covid-19 restrictions.

Rashford would be in the running for the Helen Rollason Award, given for 'outstanding achievement in the face of adversity', or a new prize could be created to recognise his bid to end child hunger.

The shortlist is usually announced at the end of November although in 2018 it was only revealed on the night of the programme — an option which the BBC may choose to repeat this year in an attempt to avoid a long-running debate about Rashford.

Public support for Rashford has seen him leap above Formula One record-breaker Lewis Hamilton as the bookies' favourite for the trophy but that is causing the BBC a major headache.

The current SPOTY conditions state: 'The panel will select a shortlist using the following criteria: reflects UK sporting achievements on the national and/or international stage; represents the breadth and depth of UK sports; and takes into account 'impact' of the person's sporting achievement beyond the sport in question.'

The SPOTY shortlist is decided by a panel of usually 12 people, which includes representatives from the BBC and the sports industry and is chaired by Barbara Slater, director of BBC Sport.

The panel is given a list of the top sports people of the year compiled by the SPOTY production team, although they can consider other candidates.

The panel then produce a shortlist based on a 'consensus view'.

If a consensus cannot be reached, a vote takes place. The criteria has not changed since 2012 — the year after the BBC faced criticism for having no women on a 10-person shortlist.

BBC News have covered Rashford's campaign extensively this year.

However, Match of the Day commentator Guy Mowbray was castigated on Twitter last weekend after he introduced coverage of United's game with Chelsea by saying: 'Whether you agree with Marcus Rashford's causes or not, there's surely only admiration for his continued commitment to them.'

Mowbray explained that 'impartiality broadcast rules mean things have to be phrased a certain way' before deleting his social media account.

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has joined Rashford's push for free school meals during holidays by donating £25,000, while Manchester United will provide 5,000 meals for vulnerable children over the October half-term holiday in partnership with the charity FareShare.

Manchester United will deliver 5,000 free meals over the October half-term following Marcus Rashford's work in highlighting child food poverty.

The club have linked up with the UK's biggest food charity FareShare to distribute meals to vulnerable children over the holidays after the Government's decided not to extend the voucher scheme.

Food provided by FareShare will be be processed, prepared and packaged into individual meals at Old Trafford kitchen facilities by United staff, then shipped by the club to local Manchester United Foundation partner schools. They will then distribute the food to kids who would usually receive government-funded meals.

Meals will be delivered to the Manchester United Foundation's six partner schools including Waterhead Academy, Dean Trust Rose Bridge, The East Manchester Academy, Manchester Enterprise Academy, Manchester Academy, Stretford High School. Other local charities will also receive meals as part of the scheme.

Collette Roche, Chief Operating Officer, Manchester United praised the individual work of Rashford in highlighting the issue of child hunger and said the club will continue its work throughout the winter.

'With our teams back playing, the attention for many has returned to what is happening on the pitch. But our work to help support those in need has not stopped and it will not stop as we face into the winter and the restrictions continue to impact our local communities.

Following the Government's decision, the striker shared posts on his social media platforms from local businesses across the country offering free food distribution.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson admitted he had not spoken to Rashford since June following the Government's first u-turn despite claims from Health Secretary Matt Hancock that they had been 'communicating'.

He said: 'We don't want to see children going hungry this winter, this Christmas. Certainly not as a result of any inattention by the government - and you are not going to see that,' he told reporters on a visit to a hospital in Berkshire.

Troy Deeney has hailed Marcus Rashford's campaigning work over free school meals and reflected back on his own reliance on the same scheme.

The 32-year-old Watford captain has previously thrown his weight behind Rashford's efforts to ensure vulnerable children in the UK do not go without during the holiday period and doubled down on his support on Monday morning.

Rashford has stepped up his efforts in recent days after the Government controversially voted against a Labour motion to extend the school dinners initiative.

'For me that was about 13 or 14 but I certainly had to rely on help. And you do, we all need help in some capacity.

'I think, more importantly, when you look at the new generation of footballers now that's coming through... I highlight (Raheem) Sterling and Rashford but there's so many more now.

'It's finally nice to see people go, "actually, look at the human being behind that footballer." We're all human and we've all got emotions. We all make mistakes.'

The Government's decision to vote against extending free school meals was met by staunch defiance from Rashford, who vowed to continue to advocate for change.

The 22-year-old has received the support from celebrities and politicians, and has been retweeting messages from businesses pledging their own resources over the weekend.

Manchester City forward Sterling, meanwhile, is planning to create a foundation also aimed at helping disadvantaged young people. The fund may even top £10million.

Rashford's campaign may force the Government into a second U-turn on the decision.

His pressure saw the scheme extended throughout the summer holidays despite an original insistence that the initiative would not continue outside term time.

Deeney believes that the position of the authorities will change again in the near future, and also lavished praise on Rashford's recent on-field performances after another impressive week.

He added: 'You look at the way this is all going now, I think that Marcus has pushed the envelope to the point where the Government are going to have to do something.

'And that is the most powerful thing I think you can see nowadays. Your social media following, your presence and your actions can actually now dictate to what the Government has to do.

'I tip my hat to him. He's 22. And most importantly, because I remember when it was like (David) Beckham, people used to say his eyes were off the ball. He's still delivering.'

Rashford has earned numerous plaudits and accolades for his work, and has now been celebrated with an incredible mural on the streets of Manchester.

The England star's smiling face is etched onto a huge brick wall, with the background painted jet black. The artwork was created by local artist Akse.

It comes after Rashford joined forces with Burberry to support UK youth organisations in Manchester, London and charities with a global reach.

The British heritage brand will provide donations to FareShare, which will fund over 200,000 meals distributed across 11,000 charities and community groups across the UK.

The move comes after Rashford was praised for his efforts to provide free school meals to vulnerable children throughout the pandemic during Sunday evening's Pride Of Britain Awards.

The Government's recent decision to vote against extending free school meals during the school holidays was met by staunch defiance from Rashford, who vowed to continue pushing for change.

The footballer was surprising fellow award winner Emmie Narayan-Nicholas in Manchester, who battled leukaemia and started providing food for parents living at their sick children's bedsides - when he was given a Special Recognition Award by Ashley and Jordan Banjo.

Accepting the award, he said: 'Ultimately no kids should miss meals. For me that should be just standard no matter where you come from. If we get that as the new normal then we have made a lot of strides forward.'

'I attended Pride of Britain last year so I was able to see firsthand just how deserving the recipients of the awards are.

'I am extremely humbled but I'd like to think that I am receiving this award on behalf of all of the incredible people who have selflessly stepped up to support their communities during this pandemic.'

rcus Rashford insisted his fight to feed Britain’s poorest children will go on on Sunday night, after a Government U-turn did not extend to the Prime Minister accepting one of the player’s key requests for help.

The 22-year-old forced No 10 into a second U-turn in five months when the PM called him after Manchester United’s 3-1 win at Everton to say that the Government would, after all, provide an extra £400m for free school meals.

But the cordial conversation, which came when the TV news networks were committed to wall-to-wall US election coverage, did not result in Boris Johnson accepting Rashford’s plea that free school meals be provided to all children under-16 where a parent or guardian is receiving Universal Credit.

Sportsmail understands that Rashford still sees this as a key plank of his campaign, which he will not give up on simply because he has won extra Government support. The measure he is still asking for would cost an additional £670m.

The Manchester United player said he was ‘overwhelmed’ with the new breakthrough and he has at last been granted a line of communication into No 10.

Johnson agreed during their call that his Downing Street staff would now meet with Rashford’s child food poverty task force.

Those talks will aim to ensure that Rashford’s partners can play a more active role in combat food poverty.

Many independent experts were sceptical about the timing of the call and No 10 announcement.

Jo Maugham QC, director of the Good Law Project, tweeted: ‘So inept has been the Government’s handling of this issue that it finds itself now having to try and bury good news.’

Marcus Rashford has successfully trademarked his name in the United States after teaming up with rap icon Jay-Z.

The Manchester United man signed with his Roc Nation agency in June with the billionaire aiming to turn the striker into a stateside success.

According to The Sun, Rashford's lawyers have trademarked his name against a range of products in the US including clothes and sportswear, grooming products and games.

Roc Nation played a role in helping Rashford force the Government into a u-turn on free school meals during the summer holidays.

The 22-year-old's brothers, Dwaine Maynard and Dane Rashford, have managed his career over the last four-and-a-half years and will continue to have complete control over his football affairs.

Rashford took his siblings with him when he travelled to meet Jay-Z in Miami, Florida in February to watch the SuperBowl as a Nike guest.

His Roc Nation agency promote itself as a company with a social conscience and philanthropy at heart.

That has been evident in Rashford’s crusade to feed vulnerable youngsters throughout lockdown.

Following his efforts in April, Rashford convinced the Government into another u-turn with Prime Minister Boris Johnson phoning the footballer last week to confirm they would provide free school meals over the winter holidays.

The change of heart came after the Government whipped Conservative MPs to vote against a Labour motion in the House of Commons calling for the extension of free school meal provision following Rashford's campaign.

Rashford welcomed the positive news in a statement which read: 'Following the game today, I had a good conversation with the Prime Minister to better understand the proposed plan, and I very much welcome the steps that have been taken to combat child food poverty in the UK.

'There is still so much more to do, and my immediate concern is the approximate 1.7 million children who miss out on free school meals, holiday provision and Healthy Start vouchers because their family income isn't quite low enough, but the intent the Government have shown today is nothing but positive and they should be recognised for that.

'The steps made today will improve the lives of near 1.7 million children in the UK over the next 12 months, and that can only be celebrated.'

The striker was honoured with a stunning mural in Manchester following his efforts to combat food poverty.

He was also awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list in October.
