Default Re: Midfielder - What We need ?

Manchester United have been left short in midfield following Bastian Schweinsteiger's exit... now Paul Pogba must live up to his price-tag

* Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin have been allowed to leave
* Jose Mourinho now has just four central midfielders to call on until the summer
* Ander Herrera has outshone world record signing Paul Pogba this season
* Manchester United have a staggering nine games during the month of April

Jose Mourinho's midfield options are incredibly short after letting both Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger leave for pastures new.

With Schneiderlin now strutting his stuff at Everton and Schweinsteiger about to start his new life in America with Chicago Fire, Mourinho has just four central midfielders.

Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini are the players Mourinho has trusted to control his side's engine room until the summer.

Paul Pogba has been outshone by Ander Herrera since his £89m move from Juventus

Both Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin have been allowed to leave the club

Veteran midfielder Michael Carrick remains at the club but is out of contract in the summer

United could play up to 16 matches in all competitions if they make it to the Europa League final with the Old Trafford outfit having to play a staggering nine games in April.

The Portuguese tactician could deploy Daley Blind, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Wayne Rooney in midfield if desperate but he is likely to stick with the four above.

Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger were very much on the periphery but they were experienced midfielders who Mourinho could turn to if the likes of Pogba and Herrera needed a rest.

Schneiderlin made eight appearances under Mourinho but only three of those were from the start and he was often brought on to help see out games and run down the clock.

Schweinsteiger, on the other hand, was used even more sparingly as he was frozen out of United's first-team plans and written off as a club asset.

Mourinho had a change of heart at the end of October and decided to give Schweinsteiger four cup run-outs before the German sealed his move to MLS on Tuesday.

They will not be big misses at Old Trafford but they were dependable squad members who Mourinho could turn to in a time of need.

Now, it's time for Pogba to step up as the £89million man has been outshone by midfield partner Herrera.

Herrera, who had been in and out United's starting line-up under Louis van Gaal, is now one of the first names on the teamsheet.

His energy and commitment in the middle of the park has freed up Pogba to join the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Juan Mata and Anthony Martial in attack but the Frenchman has failed to shine since his world record transfer.

Marouane Fellaini (right, pictured with Jesse Lingard) can fill in for Pogba when he's injured

United utility man Daley Blind can play in midfield if Jose Mourinho is short of options

Carrick has often come in when Mourinho has chosen to play three in midfield while Mourinho has described Fellaini as 'Pogba's replacement' when the Frenchman is missing.

Fellaini continues to be an aerial threat with his goal against Middlesbrough showing just valuable he is when United are trying to unlock their opponents.

The Belgium international should still have miles in his tank this season as he has made just 11 Premier League starts.

He is almost a certainty to start against West Brom after the international break as Herrera is suspended for one more game and there are doubts surrounding Pogba's fitness.

If Pogba fails to pass a fitness test and Carrick or Fellaini pick up knocks then Mourinho may be forced to put a square peg in a round hole.

Allowing both Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin to leave the suggests that he will purchase a central midfielder in the summer while Andreas Pereira will be assessed during United's pre-season tour of America.

Only time will tell if Mourinho made a mistake in signing off the departures before recruiting their replacements, particularly with the club's fixture congestion.

Andreas Pereira has impressed on loan at Granada and will be assessed in the summer

Ander Herrera handed Manchester United lifeline with Paul Pogba injury after fall out with Jose Mourinho

* Paul Pogba has been ruled out of action for between four and six weeks
* Ander Herrera could benefit from the Frenchman's enforced absence
* The Spaniard fell out with Jose Mourinho after an incident at end of last season
* He invited a friend with close links to Celta Vigo to Carrington before semi-final

Paul Pogba's hamstring injury could open the door for Ander Herrera to win back a regular place at Manchester United after the Spain midfielder upset manager Jose Mourinho.

Pogba limped out of United's Champions League win over Basle at Old Trafford on Tuesday night and will be sidelined for between four and six weeks.

Herrera is one of the players who could benefit from the Frenchman's absence after having to wait for a month of the new season before making his first Premier League start at Stoke last weekend.

Despite being voted United's player of the year last season and touted as a leading candidate to replace Wayne Rooney as captain in the summer, the 28-year-old midfielder has had to be satisfied with a place on the bench in the opening weeks of the new campaign.

While the impact made by £40million new signing Nemanja Matic has undoubtedly limited Herrera's appearances, Sportsmail understands that he has fallen out of favour since an incident at United's training ground towards the end of last season.

Ander Herrera is set to profit from Paul Pogba's expected four-week hamstring injury layoff. Herrera has fallen out of favour with Jose Mourinho after an incident at the end of last season

Herrera is believed to have innocently invited a friend with close links to Celta Vigo to Carrington shortly before United played the Spanish club in the semi-final of the Europa League.

Mourinho recognised the visitor and ordered Herrera – whose father played for Celta and later became the club's sporting director – into his office for a dressing down.

While the incident is not expected to jeopardise talks over Herrera's new contract, and Mourinho praised the player's attitude last month, the change in their relationship has been noticed around the club.

'We used to joke that he was Jose's golden boy, and they were always chatting about the game,' said an insider on Thursday night.

'But the dynamic has changed since the end of last season. It's not the same.'

Another player to upset Mourinho, Andreas Pereira, insisted on Thursday that he wants to stay on loan at Valencia for the rest of the season despite a clause enabling United to recall him in January.

Mourinho criticised the 21-year-old midfielder, who also spent last season in Spain with Granada, for not wanting to stay and fight for a place at Old Trafford.

But Pereira said: 'It didn't hurt. I talked to him before coming here. I'm happy because he loves me and if he didn't think I was a good player he would not have wanted me to stay.

'If I thought negatively, it might hurt, but for me it's a good thing. I want to work hard and stay all year.

'I don't know about that clause. That is something between clubs. I was told I was going to play here for a year and I want to be here for a year.'

Meanwhile, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin admitted on Thursday that staging the Europa League final in the wake of the Manchester bomb attack was the hardest part of his first year in office.

United's 2-0 win over Ajax in Stockholm in May was overshadowed by the terrorist atrocity at the Manchester Arena just 48 hours earlier which left 22 dead and many more injured.

Ceferin said: 'It was very difficult for everyone to organise and play a football match at such a time.

'Our thoughts and those of the players were with the victims and their relatives, but in the end everyone agreed it was our common duty to show the world that we would not surrender.'

Paul Pogba needs to play on the left of a midfield three for Manchester United as he did in win over Everton... but will Jose Mourinho get the best out of him?

* Paul Pogba played superbly as Manchester United won 2-0 at Everton
* Frenchman was stationed on the left of a midfield three at Goodison Park
* With Nemanja Matic serving as defensive cover, Pogba was liberated to push on
* He seized control of the match after half-time and teed up United's two goals
* At former club Juventus, Pogba always influenced matches playing on the left
* Mourinho would be well served to abandon 4-2-3-1 and stick with this set-up

Manchester United may have started the year with a victory, but that didn't stop a war of words breaking out between the club's past and present.

Paul Scholes, quiet and unassuming midfield maestro turned acerbic BT Sport pundit, made the suggestion that Paul Pogba was 'just strolling through games.'

'Where is the Paul Pogba we saw at Juventus?' thundered Scholes after United dropped points five and six of the festive period against Southampton on Saturday.

Paul Pogba was back to somewhere near his best in Manchester United's 2-0 win at Everton. The Frenchman turned in an influential performance from the left of midfield at Goodison Park

Liberated by having two midfielders alongside him, Pogba covered plenty of ground and was able to influence the outcome of the game, setting up both of United's goals

'He was all over the pitch, he was battling, he was tackling, he was sprinting to people, he was scoring goals from 25 yards out.

'He does not look like a player who will win you games and that is what you pay £90million for.'

Emboldened by the 2-0 win at Everton on New Year's Day and a far more dynamic Pogba performance, United manager Jose Mourinho returned fire.

'The only thing Paul Scholes does is criticise. He doesn't commend, he criticises,' he said.

'It's not Paul Pogba's fault that he makes much more money than Paul Scholes. I think Scholes will be in the history books as a phenomenal player, but not as a pundit.'

How United could line up with Pogba on the left of midfield in both a 4-3-3 formation (left) and a 4-2-3-1 system where he is slightly more advanced with more protection in behind

Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez play football as though they are two kids in the schoolyard, slams Jamie Carragher as Gary Neville says he can see why Jose Mourinho dropped £89m signing

* Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez were both criticised on Monday night
* Pogba and Sanchez disappointed during the first half against Crystal Palace
* Sanchez lost the ball 19 times for Manchester United during the opening 45
* Gary Neville said he could understand why Jose Mourinho dropped Pogba

Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez were both criticised for their performances during Manchester United's Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace.

Pogba and Sanchez were part of the United side that was 1-0 down at half time after Andros Townsend's opener at Selhurst Park on Monday night.

United's £89million record signing Pogba was the first to come under scrutiny.

The France international misplaced a number of passes, which Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville highlighted at half time.

He accused him of appearing complacent on the pitch before saying that he could understand why Jose Mourinho dropped him last month.

He said: ‘His great strength is that he plays with freedom and like he's playing on the park with his mates and it's like everyone he does is like a YouTube or an Instagram video. It's like it's not serious it's like a joke to him in terms of the way in which he goes about things.

Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez were criticised for their performances in the first half. Sanchez was United's most wasteful player in the first half, giving the ball away 19 times.

'In the second half he could come out and be unbelievable. It's no wonder Jose Mourinho has left him out in the last few weeks a number of times.'

Jamie Carragher, who was also appearing as a pundit on Sky Sports, decided to focus on Sanchez before also turning on Pogba.

He highlighted how Sanchez had been United's most wasteful player in the first half.

He said: ‘You mentioned Pogba... look at how sloppy Manchester United and how poor they've been in possession You've mentioned Pogba but I think Sanchez has been worse.

Gary Neville said he could understand why Jose Mourinho dropped Pogba last month. Jamie Carragher criticised Sanchez and said he didn't know what he was meant to be doing. The pair were also accused of being too arrogant on the pitch by Carragher

'Sanchez has lost the ball 19 times in that first half and that's unbelievable. We're talking about a supposed world class player. But I don't know where he's playing.'

Carragher finished his critique of the pair by saying both of them appeared too arrogant.

He added: It's like him [Sanchez] and Pogba are like two kids in the schoolyard "we're the best players we'll go wherever we want".’

'Fred, Matic and Pogba... way off the pace': Manchester United midfield slammed by Graeme Souness after defeat by Arsenal

* The Red Devils lost 2-0 which was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first defeat in charge
* Graeme Souness believes the Man United midfield was at fault for the defeat
* Jamie Carragher disagreed he thought the Red Devils were unfortunate

Graeme Souness has hammered Manchester United's midfielders for their performance against Arsenal.

The Red Devils lost 2-0 to the Gunners on Sunday which was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first defeat in charge.

Souness believes that the United midfield was at fault for the defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

Graeme Souness has hammered Manchester United's midfielders for their performance. The Red Devils lost 2-0 to the Gunners on Sunday which was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first defeat

Souness told Sky Sports: 'It wasn’t the United we saw in recent weeks, biggest reason was that midfield, was way off the pace. Fred, [Nemanja] Matic and [Paul] Pogba.

'They never got near anyone today. I’ve been critical of [Granit] Xhaka but I thought he was excellent today. Did everything right. Watch Matic on the goal... sprint to him son!

'United have been all over teams in recent weeks. At PSG they were aggressive, not today.'

Jamie Carragher disagreed with his fellow pundit, however, he thought United were unfortunate.

Souness believes that the United midfield was at fault for the defeat at the Emirates Stadium. Jamie Carragher disagreed with Souness, however, he thought United were unfortunate. Souness believes that the problem might have come from the dressing room before kick-off

Carragher said: 'I don’t think United played that badly today, a freak goal and a penalty that maybe shouldn’t have been. Today they’ve had big chances and it comes to whether you take them or not.'

Souness believes that the problem might have come from the dressing room before kick-off.

Souness added: 'In every single dressing room this weekend the last words are – make sure we start right. Once you hand over the initiative it’s hard to get that back.

'Maybe they stopped listening. You would have thought they’d be bang at it today. Attitude shouldn’t be ‘ill show you how clever and cute I am’ it should be ‘i'm going to stop my man today.’

'United were passive today, you can talk about systems till your blue in the face, but if you get your high energy right it follows.'

Xhaka gave Arsenal the lead before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a penalty to wrap up the victory for the Gunners on Sunday.

Paul Pogba is eyeing a new challenge and Manchester United already wanted two midfielders this summer... Sportsmail takes a look at the five possible replacements they could snap up including £140m duo

* Paul Pogba told reporters in Japan that he wanted a new challenge in the future
* Manchester United may have to replace him and sign other players this summer
* Sportsmail has taken a look at the five players they have been in touch with

While Manchester United are not willing to let him leave this summer, Paul Pogba has made it clear that he wants a new challenge.

That means they might have to sign a replacement and Sportsmail understands that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer already wanted to bring in two midfielders in this window — meaning arrivals are needed.

They have already been in touch about five midfielders, and Sportsmail have taken a look at the candidates to fill the gap if Pogba does depart.

Paul Pogba has made it clear that he wants a new challenge and may leave Manchester United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted two midfielders in the door at Old Trafford this summer anyway

Giovani Lo Celso - Real Betis

Argentine midfielder who has made it clear he would like to move to Tottenham in the summer. But United are keen and would benefit from the addition of the attack-minded 23-year-old.

Was forced into a holding role after moving to PSG in 2016, but prospered on loan at Real Betis. Scored nine in 32 games for them before they activated a clause in his deal to sign him permanently.

Betis want around £70million to let him go this summer.

Tanguy Ndombele - Lyon

Another who has declared his interest in moving to Spurs and playing under Mauricio Pochettino. United have also made contact about bringing him to Old Trafford.

Ndombele is a dominant player who is closer to a classic box-to-box midfielder than anything else. Truly established himself with an impressive display against PSG in September 2017, when he ran the show despite Lyon losing 2-0.

Like Lo Celso, would command a fee of around £70m. Has drawn comparisons with Mousa Dembele.

Giovani Lo Celso is one target for United and Tanguy Ndombele is another they have eyed up

Youri Tielemans - Monaco

Starred on loan at Leicester last season under Brendan Rodgers, who would happily bring him back. But showed enough of a Premier League pedigree to catch the eye of those further up the table.

Has long been considered one of the most promising midfielders in Europe and played a staggering 139 games for Anderlecht by the time he was 20. Moved to Monaco, where he struggled, and then Leicester.

Would likely cost around £40m, making him an affordable player with room to grow in United's side.

Rodri - Atletico Madrid

Very much a Manchester City target this summer and there is every reason to think he will end up at the Etihad as a long-term replacement for Fernandinho.

Features for Atletico Madrid in a holding role and would be best used in the same position by United. Has spent just a season at Atletico after joining them from Villarreal and has been capped six times by Spain.

Rodri will cost £62m, although it seems like he is already on his way to the other side of Manchester.

Youri Tielemans is another possible target while they want Rodri, like Manchester City

Sean Longstaff - Newcastle

Broke into the first-team at Newcastle last season after impressing Rafa Benitez in pre-season. Would cost around £25m, given his lack of experience in the top tier.

Has only played nine Premier League games. Finally got his chance in the league in December but suffered a knee ligament injury by March, only weeks after scoring his first Premier League goal.

A player with clear talent and potential — to the degree Gareth Southgate was eyeing him up for senior England duty — but one who would represent a slight risk for United.

Sean Longstaff, who impressed for Newcastle, is another player they could snap up

Code:
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7147245/Who-Manchester-United-replace-Paul-Pogba-including-140m-pair.html
kalo Celso & Rodri kayaknya berat soalnya banyak klub pesaing juga yg incer, mungkin Ndombele atau Tielemans bisa jadi alternatif soalnya Longstaff kayaknya kurang beken namanya
