Default European Super League

European Super League release first trailer for their controversial competition, boasting 'The new frontier of football' and 'the world's greatest players'… despite WORLDWIDE condemnation and threats of legal action

* Six English football clubs sign up for controversial new European Super League
* A promotional video for the breakaway league appeared on YouTube overnight
* The European Super League has been described as the 'new frontier of football'
* Home to 'world's best players', controversial new plans have stunned the sport
* MARTIN SAMUEL: The European Super League is a despicable, plastic competition that threatens the existence of English football

The controversial European Super League has been described as the 'new frontier of football' in am underwhelming promotional trailer for the proposed breakaway league.

Plans were revealed on Sunday after it emerged that six Premier League teams had signed up to join a breakaway competition 'as soon as is practicable'.

Along with Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham, Spanish sides Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, along with Italian trio Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan are looking to create a near closed-shop.

The promotional video for the controversial breakaway league called for a 'new frontier'

The video, which is 79 seconds long, gave little away as it showed off the teams involved

A creative sequence showed off club crests such as Manchester United (pictured)

Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are understood to have rejected the idea, although the plan is to expand the league to 15 founding members.

Major US bank JP Morgan, a former employer of Manchester United executive vice chairman Ed Woodward, are debt financing the new league which will see founding clubs receive £3.03billion, which is set against future broadcast revenue.

Now a first trailer appears has been released on video platform YouTube which has talked up a 'new frontier of football' with the 'world's greatest players'.

The trailer, which lasts for 79 seconds, gives little away other than a creative display of the crests for the teams that have signed up.

In a statement from the European Super League organisers on Sunday night, confirming earlier reports, it was explained that plans for their inaugural season are to see a 'new mid-week competition'.

'Twelve of Europe's leading football clubs have today [Sunday] come together to announce they have agreed to establish a new mid-week competition, the Super League, governed by its Founding Clubs,' the statement began.

'AC Milan, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur have all joined as Founding Clubs.

'It is anticipated that a further three clubs will join ahead of the inaugural season, which is intended to commence as soon as practicable.

'Going forward, the Founding Clubs look forward to holding discussions with UEFA and FIFA to work together in partnership to deliver the best outcomes for the new League and for football as a whole.'

Fans have been promised the 'world's greatest players' for the new breakaway competition. EFA's Champions League is under serious threat of a breakaway league of the top teams

It goes on to say that while there is immense criticism at the timing of the announcement with many clubs across Europe's lower leagues crippled financially by the Covid-19 pandemic, the formation of a breakaway league has been 'accelerated' by increasing 'instability'.

'For a number of years, the Founding Clubs have had the objective of improving the quality and intensity of existing European competitions throughout each season, and of creating a format for top clubs and players to compete on a regular basis.

'The pandemic has shown that a strategic vision and a sustainable commercial approach are required to enhance value and support for the benefit of the entire European football pyramid.'

In a rare public comment, United co-chairman Joel Glazer brazenly claimed that the closed shop would provide 'increased financial support for the wider football pyramid'.

Manchester United and Chelsea were among a group of six Premier League teams announced on Sunday night to join a breakaway European Super League. News of English football's Big Six planning to breakaway will be highly damaging for UEFA and their president Aleksander Ceferin (pictured)

A format was also released which said there would be 20 teams and matches would take place in midweek and not affect domestic calendars, with an August start.

UEFA, who were due to announce their own proposals for a revamped Champions League on Monday, reacted with fury to the news which had broken earlier on Sunday.

A statement, issued jointly with the three governing bodies and leagues involved, said: 'If this were to happen, we will remain united in our efforts to stop this cynical project, a project that is founded on the self-interest of a few clubs at a time when society needs solidarity more than ever.

'We will consider all measures available to us, at all levels, both judicial and sporting in order to prevent this happening.'

SUPER LEAGUE FULL STATEMENT AND COMPETITION FORMAT

Twelve of Europe's leading football clubs have today [Sunday] come together to announce they have agreed to establish a new mid-week competition, the Super League, governed by its Founding Clubs.

AC Milan, Arsenal, Atlético Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur have all joined as Founding Clubs.

It is anticipated that a further three clubs will join ahead of the inaugural season, which is intended to commence as soon as practicable. Going forward, the Founding Clubs look forward to holding discussions with UEFA and FIFA to work together in partnership to deliver the best outcomes for the new League and for football as a whole.

The formation of the Super League comes at a time when the global pandemic has accelerated the instability in the existing European football economic model. Further, for a number of years, the Founding Clubs have had the objective of improving the quality and intensity of existing European competitions throughout each season, and of creating a format for top clubs and players to compete on a regular basis.

The pandemic has shown that a strategic vision and a sustainable commercial approach are required to enhance value and support for the benefit of the entire European football pyramid.

In recent months extensive dialogue has taken place with football stakeholders regarding the future format of European competitions. The Founding Clubs believe the solutions proposed following these talks do not solve fundamental issues, including the need to provide higher quality matches and additional financial resources for the overall football pyramid.

Competition Format

• 20 participating clubs with 15 Founding Clubs and a qualifying mechanism for a further five teams to qualify annually based on achievements in the prior season.

• Midweek fixtures with all participating clubs continuing to compete in their respective national leagues, preserving the traditional domestic match calendar which remains at the heart of the club game.

• An August start with clubs participating in two groups of ten, playing home and away fixtures, with the top three in each group automatically qualifying for the quarter finals.

Teams finishing fourth and fifth will then compete in a two-legged play-off for the remaining quarter-final positions. A two-leg knockout format will be used to reach the final at the end of May, which will be staged as a single fixture at a neutral venue.

As soon as practicable after the start of the men's competition, a corresponding women's league will also be launched, helping to advance and develop the women's game.

The new annual tournament will provide significantly greater economic growth and support for European football via a long-term commitment to uncapped solidarity payments which will grow in line with league revenues. These solidarity payments will be substantially higher than those generated by the current European competition and are expected to be in excess of €10 billion (£8.7bn) during the course of the initial commitment period of the Clubs.

In addition, the competition will be built on a sustainable financial foundation with all Founding Clubs signing up to a spending framework. In exchange for their commitment, Founding Clubs will receive an amount of €3.5 billion (£3bn) solely to support their infrastructure investment plans and to offset the impact of the COVID pandemic. Florentino Pérez, President of Real Madrid and the first Chairman of the Super League said: 'We will help football at every level and take it to its rightful place in the world. Football is the only global sport in the world with more than four billion fans and our responsibility as big clubs is to respond to their desires.'

Backing the new European league, Andrea Agnelli, Chairman of Juventus and Vice-Chairman of the Super League said: 'Our 12 Founder clubs represent billions of fans across the globe and 99 European trophies. We have come together at this critical moment, enabling European competition to be transformed, putting the game we love on a sustainable footing for the long-term future, substantially increasing solidarity, and giving fans and amateur players a regular flow of headline fixtures that will feed their passion for the game while providing them with engaging role models.'

Joel Glazer, Co-Chairman of Manchester United and Vice-Chairman of the Super League said: 'By bringing together the world's greatest clubs and players to play each other throughout the season, the Super League will open a new chapter for European football, ensuring world class competition and facilities, and increased financial support for the wider football pyramid.'

Default Re: European Super League

Bruno Fernandes hits out at European Super League plans by claiming 'dreams cannot be bought' as Manchester United star joins Ander Herrera, Dejan Lovren and Mesut Ozil in SLAMMING the proposals that have rocked football across Europe

* Bruno Fernandes is the biggest name to criticise the Super League proposals
* Fernandes' Manchester United side are one of 12 clubs to have founded the idea
* PSG's Ander Herrera whose club is not part of the Super League, has also posted
* Mesut Ozil and Dejan Lovren are other notable names who have come forward

Manchester United star Bruno Feranandes has become the most high-profile player to speak out against plans for a European Super League, saying 'dreams cannot be bought'.

The Red Devils were one of 12 teams to sensationally announce their own new breakaway tournament which will eclipse UEFA's Champions League that will start 'as soon as is practicable'.

The twelve teams, which include all of England's Big Six clubs, will be part of a mega-rich league that will see 15 out of the 20 competing sides automatically qualify for the competition on a yearly basis.

Bruno Fernandes has become the most high-profile player to speak out against the new European Super League plans. Fernandes said 'dreams can't be bought' referring to the Super League's large participation fee

Wolves player Daniel Podence posted an emotional post slamming the talks, with Fernandes sharing the winger's post and captioned it, 'Dreams cannot be buy (bought).'

Podence's original post read: 'The Ball. The Song. The Dream. The Zidane's (sic) volley... Kaka's solo... Liverpool in Athens... Ole in Barcelona... Cris and Seedorf

'There some things we just can't really pay for it.'

Wolves winger Daniel Podence put out an emotional opposition to the Super League plans

Former United midfielder Ander Herrera, who now plays for PSG - one of the major clubs to not sign up to the proposals as of yet - has also spoken out against the new breakaway tournament.

The former Manchester United man took to Twitter on Monday to criticise the plans, saying they are 'the rich stealing what the people created'.

Other players, such as former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren, Mesut Ozil and Yannick Bolasie have also slated the plans that are proving unprecedentedly unpopular.

PSG midfielder Ander Herrera also spoke out against the proposed Super League plans. Herrera took to Twitter on Monday to slam the moves that 'steal what the people created'

Herrera, whose PSG side have not yet joined the plans but could still do so, wrote on Twitter: 'I fell in love with popular football, with the football of the fans, with the dream of seeing the team of my heart compete against the greatest.

'If this European super league advances, those dreams are over, the illusions of the fans of the teams that are not giants of being able to win on the field competing in the best competitions will end.

'I love football and I cannot remain silent about this, I believe in an improved Champions League, but not in the rich stealing what the people created, which is nothing other than the most beautiful sport on the planet.'

Lovren, who won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2019 and currently plays for Russian side Zenit St Petersburg, wrote on Twitter: 'Football will be in the near future on a brink of complete collapse.

'Nobody is thinking about the bigger picture, only the financial side. I still believe we can solve this unpleasant situation.'

And when Lovren was asked why other big names hadn't spoken up like he and Herrera, he said: 'They are still sleeping.'

Dejan Lovren, a Premier League and Champions League winner at Liverpool, dismissed the plans that his old club are a central part of. Mesut Ozil was dismissive of the idea, saying a Super League doesn't compare to a World Cup. Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has previously slated plans to form a Super League

Former Arsenal and Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil, a World Cup winner with Germany in 2014 and now plays for Fenerbahce, said on Twitter: 'Kids grow up dreaming to win the World Cup and the Champions League - not any Super League.

'The enjoyment of big games is that they only happen once or twice a year, not every week. Really hard to understand for all football fans out there...'

Bolasie, meanwhile, wrote: 'Some real mercenaries...all values and history thrown out the window.

'I was a fan before I played football, I’m a fan now and will be after I finish playing...it’s not about me or anyone else it’s about the millions of fans who follow there teams week in week out regardless of success/riches..funny how it starts getting more level & man jump.'

Speaking back in November, Toni Kroos hit out at how the modern game was being reshaped by FIFA and UEFA and was critical of the then mooted Super League plan.

He said on the podcast 'Einfach bad Luppen': 'Unfortunately, we did not decide as players. We are just puppets of FIFA and UEFA . If there was a players' union, we would not play a Nations League or a Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.

'These competitions try to absorb everything financially, also to squeeze the players physically. But I am a big fan of leaving things like that when they go well. The Leagues are already top along with the Champions League, the World Cup.

'From a sporting point of view, it would certainly be interesting because there would only be high-level matches. But the gap between the big clubs and small it will expand even more. Not always everything has to be more, faster, more and more money.'

Default Re: European Super League

Wayne Rooney backs opposition to controversial European Super League... but Manchester United legend insists his former club will always consider their fans when making decisions over breakaway

* Wayne Rooney supported Gary Neville's criticism of the European Super League
* The former Manchester United striker said he understood people's frustrations
* However, Rooney insisted his old club will always consider their fans' feelings
* The Derby boss said he wants to know more information about the proposals

Wayne Rooney says he understands the anger and frustration over proposals for a European Super League, and warned that any move away from the Premier League by English football's Bix Six clubs would not be 'a great look'.

Rooney's old Manchester United teammate Gary Neville has been vociferous in his criticism of the plan, describing it as 'disgraceful' and a 'criminal act against the fans'.

Rooney was more circumspect in his reaction and wants to know more about the implications for English football before he gives his full opinion.

The Derby County manager said: 'What Gary Neville is saying is right, but what's important is let's see what comes from it.

'Once the information is released I'm sure there will be a lot of people who are animated. If it's not the right information, one of them being myself.

'I completely understand the frustration. If they totally break away from the Premier League and the domestic cup competitions in England I don't think that would be a great look.

'Football is working fine the way it is at the minute. Let's see if they're looking to improve that or it's a backward step.

'I'm curious what information comes out instead of jumping the gun. Only then will I give my true feelings on it.

Wayne Rooney (left) said his former team-mate Gary Neville was right in his criticism of the European Super League. The former Manchester United striker said he understood the frustration and anger of fans. Rooney insisted the Red Devils will always consider their fans when making decisions

'Whether it's good news or bad news we can all have a clearer opinion on the situation then. It might be a lot of wasted words.

'I could say, "who are the top six clubs in this country?" There are many teams fighting to be in the top four, that's the first point.

'It's strange timing and a strange situation to come out, but I'm sure there are reasons for that. But it's best to wait and see what information comes out on how it's actually going to work. The people in charge of these clubs are not stupid.

'The only thing I hope comes from it is the Premier League is protected and rewarded in some way in order to allow these clubs to go and do what they're planning on doing.

'What you have to look at is the history of English football. If this is something on top of what we've got, the competitions the teams are playing in, then that's a decision for those clubs to take.

'If it's something that is going to help non-league football, League One, League Two, Championship, other Premier League clubs I'm sure that is something they're discussing.

'It's quite clear there is a lot of money in football, the same way there is a lot of money in golf, Formula One and tennis. The money is growing in the majority of sports. That's the way the world is going and we have to live in those times.

'How that money gets distributed is a different matter and the protection of the Premier League and English pyramid is the most important thing. I'm sure whatever discussions these clubs have been having they will be taking that into consideration.'

FIFA and UEFA have reacted angrily to the Super League plans and the fallout could mean that any player involved in the new competition would be banned from representing his country.

Rooney added: 'I certainly wouldn't give up playing for my country. I was hugely honoured to play for my country.' Despite Neville's comments, Rooney defended United saying that his old club will always consider their fans when making decisions.

'I can speak from working at Manchester United for such a long time,' he said. 'The last thing Manchester United would try and jeopardise is the relationship with the fans. I know that for a fact.

'Everything they will be looking at is from a point of view of helping the club moved forward, but also helping the fans stay involved.

'We've actually played in the competition they're talking about in pre-season. We played in the Champions Cup which had Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham, Liverpool, Arsenal, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, all these teams in it.

'I'm sure they are looking at expanding that. It seems like they are looking at taking that away from pre-season and doing it during the season.'

Default Re: European Super League

Overwhelming majority of football fans reject European Super League plans in YouGov poll as 79% say they are AGAINST it... while over HALF think Big Six should be kicked out of Premier League - and just 10% want them back without punishment

* Six Premier League clubs announced breakaway European Super League plans
* It brought widespread condemnation from football institutions around Europe
* A YouGov poll has now revealed fans are also majorly against the proposals
* 51 per cent of supporters believe the clubs should be kicked out the top flight

Nearly 80 per cent of British football fans who took part in a YouGov poll on the controversial European Super League have confirmed they are against its creation.

Plans for the controversial breakaway competition including Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham were announced on Sunday night, and brought about widespread condemnation from around the globe.

LaLiga trio Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona and Italian sides Inter Milan, AC Milan and Juventus are the other founding members in what is a direct challenge to the current UEFA Champions League competition.

Nearly 80 per cent of British football fans are against the creation of a European Super League

Fans protested all day after plans for a breakaway competition were announced on Sunday

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin called the plans a 'spit in the face of all football lovers,' while FIFA, the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, the European Club Association and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson all issued statements slamming the new proposals.

And in a poll conducted by international research and data analytics group YouGov, an overwhelming number of football fans are too unsurprisingly against the Super League become a reality after conducting a survey involving 1,730 supporters on Monday afternoon.

The survey revealed 79 per cent of football fans surveyed (1367 supporters) oppose the creation of the European Super League, including 68 per cent - or two thirds - who 'strongly oppose' it.

Some 51 per cent of fans (882 supporters) asked also believe the 'Big Six' Premier League clubs should be kicked out of the English top-flight as punishment for attempting to form a breakaway league.

More than half want big six clubs facing financial penalties, but 73 per cent think owners should be the ones to be punished

More than half of those surveyed (55 per cent) think the six clubs should face financial penalties, and more than half want clubs punished in some manner, but 73 per cent (1263 fans) think action should instead be taken against the clubs' respective owners.

Moreover, 32 per cent think they should be deducted points, while 22 per cent even called for their existing domestic titles to be stripped from them. That leaves just a minor 10 per cent (173 fans) who would welcome the clubs back with open arms without any such penalties.

Real Madrid president and proposed first European Super League president Florentino Perez insisted it would 'help football at every level' and their 'responsibility as big clubs is to respond to [fan's] desires'.

But exactly three quarters of participants contrarily believe clubs down the football pyramid will suffer financially from the Super League formation, leaving just 121 people to believe the league will be of benefit to all.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin led the criticism from football institutions around Europe. Only 19 per cent of fans of the Big Six top flight clubs are in favour of the controversial league

The poll adds opposition is highest among fans of the 14 remaining Premier League teams, with 88 per cent of those following a team outside the 'Big Six' against it, as are 76 per cent of fans of those six sides.

Only 14 per cent of those football fans surveyed are in favour of the breakaway league, and that number only rises to 19 per cent for those fans who support one of City, United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal or Spurs.

An enormous 89 per cent of those asked think financial gains are behind the creation of the European Super League, with just 52 people - or three per cent - thinking fan's desires have led clubs to propose the changes.

Exactly three quarters of those who participated in the poll say they are not interested in watching the new league if and when it begins, after a proposed start of August was suggested when the plans were announced.

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona slams European Super League clubs for not consulting supporters before announcing breakaway, stating: 'The fans are the most important thing in football, they have to be respected'

* Manchester United have signed up to take part in the European Super League
* Former United captain Eric Cantona has given his thoughts on the proposals
* The Frenchman has said that the views of supporters should have been heard

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona say the views of supporters should have been taken into account before the European Super League was revealed.

The former United playmaker took to Instagram on Monday to become the latest to share his thoughts on the matter.

His former side are one of six Premier League sides who have agreed to take part in the breakaway competition.

Eric Cantona has given his take on proposals for a European Super League breakaway

'I would like to say something about the European Super League,' the Frenchman said.

'Since one year we have seen games on TV with the best clubs in the world and the best players in the world, and it was so boring, and it's still so boring, because the fans are not there - the fans singing, jumping, supporting their teams.

'The fans are the most important thing in football. They have to be respected.

'Did these big clubs ask the fans what they thought about this idea? No, unfortunately, and that's a shame.'

Angry Manchester United players had an emergency briefing with Ed Woodward on Monday morning - with stars 'seriously unimpressed' by the club's role in forming European Super League and finding out about it through the media

* Twelve European clubs announced a new European Super League on Sunday
* Manchester United were one of the Premier League clubs to sign up for format
* Ed Woodward held an emergency briefing with angry United players on Monday
* The Red Devils stars were unimpressed they discovered the plans in the media

Ed Woodward held an emergency briefing with ‘seriously unimpressed’ Manchester United players at Carrington on Monday morning.

Sportsmail understands that some members of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad were angered after they found out about the breakaway European Super League – and their own employer’s central role in it – via the media on Sunday.

Insiders have disclosed that some also felt Solskjaer was thrown under the bus when left to face questions from Sky after the story had broken during their 3-1 victory over Burnley on Sunday.

They made their feelings known and the executive vice chairman delivered a briefing via Zoom to explain the club’s position at their training base.

Sources say the reception among many of the squad was ‘lukewarm at best’.

Woodward, who recently moved to London from Manchester, is said to have told the squad they were acting in the club’s best interests.

Ed Woodward was forced into an emergency meeting with Manchester United players about the Super League plans. A source told Sportsmail the players were angry they found out about the breakaway through the media and not via the club. Twelve European clubs, including United, announced the breakaway tournament on Sunday

‘Some of the players were seriously unimpressed,’ a source explained. ‘Not only that they were left to find out by the media about what had happened but that their manager was left to face the press when the owners had concocted this.

‘Woodward attempted to appease them but the response was lukewarm at best. It hasn’t gone down well with many of them.’

Earlier on Monday, star midfielder Bruno Fernandes reposted a message from compatriot and Wolves man Daniel Podence, who listed a number of Champions League highlights and added ‘There some (sic) things we just can’t really pay for’.

Fernandes wrote: ‘Dreams can’t be (bought)’ along with clapping emojis.

Earlier on Monday, Woodward was eviscerated by UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin for his part in the breakaway of the so-called dirty dozen.

‘I didn't have much contact with him but he called me last Thursday in the evening saying that he's very satisfied with the [Champions League] reforms, that he fully supports the reforms, and that the only thing he would like to speak about is about financial fair play,’ Ceferin said. ‘And obviously he already signed something else.’

The UEFA boss added: ‘We didn’t know we had snakes so close to us.’

Default Re: European Super League

The Super League is SUSPENDED after Big Six all pull out following furious backlash from fans, players and pundits, with Man City and Chelsea leading the way... and Ed Woodward RESIGNS as Manchester United chief on an explosive night

* All six English clubs that signed up to the European Super League have quit the project amid a huge backlash
* The group were among 12 clubs that agreed to join a breakaway movement which was announced on Sunday
* Manchester City and Chelsea were the first to reveal their intentions, with the other four following suit
* A statement made by the Super League confirmed its suspension after all six English clubs pulled out
* Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward will step down from his role at the end of the year
* Controversial plans would have afforded the 12 teams access to a European competition with no relegation
* However, amid widespread condemnation, plans are unraveling and the concept appears close to collapse

The reviled European Super League was officially suspended on Tuesday night as all six English clubs formally withdrew from the ill-fated venture.

On another dramatic night when Chelsea fans staged a mass protest outside Stamford Bridge before their Premier League clash with Brighton, City and Chelsea began the process of killing off the rebel league less than 48 hours after its launch by pulling out late in the afternoon, putting huge pressure on the other 10 founder members to follow suit, as they held crisis talks over their exit strategies.

No sooner had they thrown in the towel than Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, one of the architects of the new rebel movement, sensationally announced his resignation. And, before the night was through, Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham had followed suit.

A statement from the League then followed, in which it confirmed it 'shall reconsider the most appropriate steps to reshape the project'.

The match, which ended goalless but was almost an irrelevance, was delayed after hundreds of fans protested about their club’s involvement outside Stamford Bridge. The astonishing developments appeared to kill off the planned new league at birth, with strong indications from Spain on Tuesday night that Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were also quitting.

Chelsea supporters protested on Tuesday night before news of the club's withdrawal emerged ahead of their Brighton clash

A statement appeared on the Manchester City website confirming their departure from the European Super League

Sportsmail has learned that all the clubs could face financial penalties for pulling out as the ESL contract signed last week contained clauses committing them for at least three years. Yet all concluded that taking an economic hit was a price worth paying for limiting the reputational damage.

They may be too late for that. Chelsea and City were never fully convinced and felt railroaded after being presented with a ‘take-it-or-leave it’ offer last Thursday.

Pep Guardiola was fuming about the ESL plans on Tuesday before it was announced his club was pulling out. ‘It is not a sport if success is already guaranteed,’ the City boss said.

‘When it doesn’t matter whether you lose, when the relation between effort and reward does not exist. It’s business, it’s money. It is not fair. You have to play the competitions that you deserve to play.

‘Everyone can complain... Ajax, Sevilla, Leicester, West Ham. It’s normal. I would be the same.

‘Why haven’t they (the ESL board) clarified the reasons for their decisions? Come out and explain. It’s unfair for the managers and players to respond to this. Liverpool go to Leeds and Jurgen (Klopp) and the players are criticised. We are not involved. They have to clarify. Go out and explain it.’

The speed of events represents a humiliation for the league’s chairman Florentino Perez, and the American owners of Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal, who were key to the project. As recently as Tuesday morning,

Chelsea were staying in despite the furore, but a series of meetings led to a change of heart. Roman Abramovich is understood to have taken the ultimate decision due to concerns about a backlash.

Chelsea have launched several community-led initiatives during the pandemic and believed that the toxic competition would undo that good work.

The club’s decision to request paperwork to withdraw was taken ahead of the protests outside the ground, though the gathering of fans who were addressed by technical director Petr Cech may have hastened the information becoming public.

An official statement finally came in the early hours of the morning, with Chelsea stating: 'Having joined the group late last week, we have now had time to consider the matter fully and have decided that our continued participation in these plans would not be in the best interests of the Club, our supporters or the wider football community.'

City owner Sheik Mansour was also concerned about reputational damage having built up goodwill in the blue half of Manchester for achievements on the pitch, as well as the investment to regenerate run-down areas of the city.

Many supporters chose to sit in protest with a group singing: 'If you love football, sit down', a move that prevented the two team coaches from reaching the ground

A backlash from fans saw hundreds withdraw memberships, a tiny allocation for Sunday’s Carabao Cup Final go unsold and anti-ESL banners placed outside the Etihad.

Both Mansour and Abramovich have spent heavily since buying their respective clubs and unlike other members of the Big Six, have no external debts, a major factor for the other clubs who signed up hoping for a huge increase in revenues.

Furious discussions took place at both clubs over unilateral decisions made to join without the knowledge of executive teams, with some directors feeling sidelined.

The incredible events vindicate the stance taken by the rest of the Premier League, who in a meeting of the other 14 clubs on Tuesday opted to lobby the rebels into pulling out of the ESL rather than punishing them immediately.

UEFA were also celebrating a huge victory on Tuesday night, with the speed of the rebels’ collapse obliterating any leverage they might have had in opposing the governing body’s planned Champions League reforms.

European Super League release statement announcing suspension after Big Six pull out of controversial £4.6bn scheme... but maintain that 'football needs to change', claiming 'pressure' was applied to Premier League's clubs

* European Super League plans have been suspended 48 hours after its airing
* Twelve clubs had pledged to join the controversial £4.6bn competition
* However, England's six participating clubs withdrew amid huge backlash
* Now, the ESL says it will put plans on hold but said 'football needs to change'

Plans for a European Super League have officially been suspended after all six Premier League clubs announced their intention to withdraw from the controversial £4.6bn scheme.

On Sunday night, 12 European clubs pledged their support for the controversial breakaway competition that threatened to drastically change the football landscape in England and across the continent.

Six clubs from England - Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal - had agreed to join the league, while three teams from Spain and Italy apiece - Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan - made up the remaining six places.

However, just 48 hours after the monumental announcement did the European Super League begin to unravel, with England's participating clubs each releasing statements announcing their intention to step away from the competition.

Plans for the European Super League have been suspended following the events of Tuesday. Chelsea and Man City led the way as all six English clubs announced they intended to leave. Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool chairmen Daniel Levy, Stan Kroenke and John Henry all released club statements on Tuesday night announcing they have withdrawn. So too did Man United, who also announced that chief executive Ed Woodward would resign

Now, the Super League has responded, confirming that it will suspend the project while maintaining that the existing football climate is unsustainable.

'The European Super League is convinced that the current status quo of European football needs to change,' read Tuesday's statement.

'We are proposing a new European competition because the existing system does not work. Our proposal is aimed at allowing the sport to evolve while generating resources and stability for the full football pyramid, including helping to overcome the financial difficulties experienced by the entire football community as a result of the pandemic.

'It would also provide materially enhanced solidarity payments to all football stakeholders.'

The European Super League reacted to the news and said plans would be halted temporarily. The group, led by Real Madrid's Florentino Perez, maintained that 'football needs to change'

The Super League also commented on events that unfolded in England, acknowledging that the withdrawal of the six clubs was due to 'pressure' applied over the past 48 hours.

'Despite the announced departure of the English clubs, forced to take such decisions due to the pressure on them, we are convinced our proposal is fully aligned with European law and regulations as was demonstrated today by a court decision to protect the Super League from third party actions.

'Given the current circumstances, we shall reconsider the most appropriate steps to reshape the project, always having in mind our goals of offering fans the best experience possible while enhancing solidarity payments for the entire football community.'

Tuesday night's developments have stirred concerns among the remaining six clubs in the Super League, with Tariq Panja of the New York Times reporting that Inter are getting cold feet over the proposal.

The statement added that England's six clubs left due to 'pressure' of the past 48 hours. Florentino Perez had claimed the European Super League is needed to save football financially

Contrary to reports, Juventus president is not standing down from his role at the Old Lady, after Manchester United announced that Ed Woodward will leave at the end of 2021.

The big six's withdrawal presents a devastating blow to Florentino Perez, who had spearheaded the concept alongside Stan Kroenke, John W Henry and Joel Glazer of Arsenal, Liverpool and United respectively.

Perez, 74, had insisted that the new league would 'save' football. having cast grave doubts over its sustainability. The Real Madrid president had claimed that football would be 'dead' by 2024 and argued that young people would be in favour of shorter games.

There had been hopes that a further three 'Founding Members' of the Super League would be added to the initial 12, although Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and PSG had rejected their invitations to join the league.

'We got our football back': Gary Lineker, Jan Vertonghen and Gary Neville lead the way as football fans celebrate impending collapse of European Super League as Big Six clubs pull out of breakaway to leave controversial plans in tatters

* European Super League is on the brink of collapse after multiple clubs pull out
* Chelsea, Man City, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are set to leave the project
* The news was met with a raucous fanfare on Twitter by happy football fans
* Gary Lineker and Gary Neville lead the way as they waved goodbye to the plans
* Other compared it to an 'apprentice task' while other revelled in its collapse

Gary Lineker and Gary Neville are leading the way in fan celebration after the news broke that the controversial European Super League is on the brink of collapse.

Just 48 hours after the £4.6billion scheme was announced, Chelsea, Manchester City, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid – four of the 12 founding members of the Super League – are reportedly ready to withdraw from the breakaway competition following fierce backlash from the footballing world.

The news that the Super League – which has dominated headlines since it was announced on Sunday – is about to crumble was met by a raucous fanfare on Twitter, with fans celebrating its quick demise.

Gary Lineker tweets 'we've got our ball back' with the Super League on the brink of collapse

Gary Neville also waved off the hugely unpopular project on Twitter following news that Manchester City and Chelsea have reportedly withdrawn from the European Super League

Neville, who has been particularly outspoken on the project, simply tweeted an emoji of a waving hand as a way to say farewell to the hugely unpopular proposals.

Lineker joined his compatriot by claiming that supporters have 'got our ball back'.

Benfica defender and former Tottenham star Jan Vertonghen laughed up the ongoing story by insisting that 'Twitter is gold atm'.

Others took the opportunity to take a dig at all clubs involved, claiming the whole sorry saga was similar to 'an Apprentice task', as seen on the popular BBC program.

Spanish side Sevilla hilariously reacted to the news by poking fun at the collapse of the project

Another revelled in the soon-to-be failed project by claiming that the Super League collapse in real time 'was one of the most enjoyable Twitter experiences' they've had.

LaLiga club Sevilla, who weren't included in the Super League plans, poked fun at those still involved in the Super League, posting a picture of the viral meme of a dog sitting in a burning house while claiming that 'everything is fine'.

The events on Tuesday cap off what has been an uncertain time for the sport of football.

The £4.6bn scheme, which was labelled greedy by critics, threatened to change the landscape of football forever with Europe's elite forming their own all-inclusive money-spinning league despite fan fury.

Benfica defender Jan Vertonghen enjoyed Twitter's reaction to the news while other fans enjoyed the European Super League's quick demise

However, moments after news had filtered through that Chelsea and City were reportedly planning to withdraw from the plans, Manchester United revealed that chief executive Ed Woodward had resigned from his position as a result of fierce backlash.

It’s understood that Woodward was planning to go at the end of the year – and will stay in his role until then – but the announcement has been brought forward.

Reacting to the news ahead of his side's clash at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea on Tuesday night, Brighton boss Graham Potter told Sky Sports: 'We're very pleased.

'We feel it stands against everything we know as football. It would be wrong to create something where there is no threat of relegation and you want the chance to compete to play in Europe.

'If we are in a place where it is stopping, that is fantastic news. Sometimes a fan can be thought of as a consumer and we are in danger if that is the case.'

Chelsea fans congregated outside Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night ahead of their Premier League game against Brighton to protest against the breakaway league.

Blues fans unfurled banners criticising the club for their decision to join the controversial Super League and called on Abramovich to 'do the right thing'.

Scores of fans chanted, let off blue smoke bombs and marched around the west London ground, with police attempting to control the crowds.

Potter added: 'Credit to the fans for making their case, and the quicker we get back to playing for points the better. We were a little bit delayed but the supporters are the most important thing.'

Marcus Rashford becomes the latest Manchester United star after Bruno Fernandes to hit out at European Super League plans by posting picture of Sir Matt Busby's 'football is nothing without fans' message at Old Trafford

* Marcus Rashford becomes latest to condemn European Super League proposals
* Man United striker joined team-mate Bruno Fernandes in hitting out at concept
* He posted an image of Sir Matt Busby's 'football is nothing without fans' banner

Marcus Rashford has become the latest high-profile name to condemn European Super League proposals.

The Manchester United striker joined team-mate Bruno Fernandes in hitting out at the formation of a European Super League on Tuesday.

The Premier League's so-called Big Six of Manchester United, Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham are founding members of the controversial new breakaway tournament that would replace their European commitments with UEFA, such as the Champions League.

Fernandes said 'dreams cannot be bought' on Monday and now Rashford has condemned the concept by posting an image onto Twitter of one of the banners which covers the stands at Old Trafford.

Carrying a quote from the club's great former manager Sir Matt Busby, it reads: 'Football is nothing without fans'. Former United defender Gary Neville, who has been vocal in slamming the proposals, replied: 'This is a beautiful thing!'

Wolves player Daniel Podence posted an emotional post slamming the talks, with Fernandes sharing the winger's post and captioned it, 'Dreams cannot be buy (bought).'

Manchester United's Marcus Rashford has condemned European Super League proposals. Rashford joined team-mate Bruno Fernandes in hitting out at formation of controversial league

The Red Devils were one of 12 teams to sensationally announce their own new breakaway tournament which will eclipse UEFA's Champions League.

The dozen teams will be part of a mega-rich league that will see 15 out of the 20 competing sides automatically qualify for the competition on a yearly basis.

Former United midfielder Ander Herrera, who now plays for PSG - one of the major clubs to not sign up to the proposals as of yet - has also spoken out against the new breakaway tournament.

The former United man took to Twitter on Monday to criticise the plans, saying they are 'the rich stealing what the people created'.

Other players, such as former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren, Mesut Ozil and Yannick Bolasie have also slated the plans that are proving unprecedentedly unpopular.

Former Arsenal and Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil, a World Cup winner with Germany in 2014, who now plays for Fenerbahce, said on Twitter: 'Kids grow up dreaming to win the World Cup and the Champions League - not any Super League.

Sportsmail exclusively revealed on Tuesday that Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson has called an emergency meeting between Premier League captains with the England man set to spearhead players' response to Super League proposals.

While the Premier League's furious 14 outcast clubs are 'considering all action available' to stop the Super League in its tracks as they 'unanimously and vigorously' reject plans for the competition.
