Default Re: Frenkie de Jong

Take a pay-cut or go to United! Barcelona 'tell Frenkie de Jong to slash his £5m-a-year wages or leave' after they reach agreement on a £55m transfer fee with Man United... leaving the decision with him

* Man United and Barcelona thrashed out an agreement on De Jong's transfer fee
* It came after John Murtough and Richard Arnold met Barcelona executives
* Reports in Spain say Nou Camp club have issued midfielder with an ultimatum
* De Jong was told to take a big pay cut if he wanted to stay with Barcelona
* Holland international is Erik ten Hag's primary transfer target for the summer

Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong 'has been told to take a substantial pay cut' if he wants to stay at Barcelona.

After the two clubs agreed a transfer fee for the Dutch midfielder - an initial £55million potentially rising to £72m - it is now up to De Jong to decide where his future lies.

De Jong, 25, is United's primary transfer target for the summer and he would be reunited with his former Ajax coach Erik ten Hag in Manchester.

Reports in Spain suggest that De Jong would like to remain at the Nou Camp but the club's perilous financial situation has left the door open for a sale.

United chiefs John Murtough and Richard Arnold travelled to Barcelona on Monday and met Barca sporting director Jordi Cruyff, director of football Mateu Alemany and sports vice-president Rafa Yuste at the Triton Restaurante to thrash out an agreement on the price.

Mundo Deportivo report that Alemany and Cruyff, as well as Xavi, sat down with De Jong, 25, ahead of his first training session back and explained the situation.

They reportedly told De Jong that if he wishes he to stay at Barcelona, he will be required to take a significant cut on his £5m-a-year salary.

Another Mundo report suggested De Jong was 'displeased' with the way Barcelona have handled the situation.

Frenkie de Jong has reportedly been told by Barcelona to take a pay cut or leave the club. The Dutch midfielder has been given a choice when it comes to his Barcelona future. New Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is keen to bring De Jong to Old Trafford. Reports in Spain say De Jong was told he needs to cut his £5million-a-year wages. Barca boss Xavi wants De Jong's future sorted before they to go America for pre-season

Selling him for the fee agreed would significantly ease Barcelona's well-documented financial concerns, both in terms of an injection of cash but also reducing the wage bill.

Mundo report that De Jong was told his sale was a purely economic issue and that Xavi considered him an important player.

Chelsea have also been linked with De Jong, and could offer a continuation of Champions League football next season, but it is United who have finally agreed a fee with Barcelona after weeks of negotiations.

Xavi is reportedly keen to have the situation resolved before Barcelona fly out to the United States on July 16 for a two-week pre-season tour.

Barcelona paid Ajax around £72m to sign De Jong in the summer of 2019 and he has since played 140 matches for the club.

De Jong would be able to continue playing Champions League football if he finds a way to stay at Barcelona, while United will compete in the Europa League next season.

Ten Hag's side are currently out in Bangkok as part of their pre-season tour and will face Liverpool in their first friendly on Tuesday.

Default Re: Frenkie de Jong

Frenkie de Jong is TOLD to leave Barcelona for Man United after the clubs finally agree £71.5m deal... but a row over £17m owed in wages and bonuses means he's REFUSING to go, while Raphinha and other new signings wait to be registered

* Barcelona have agreed a £63m fee with Manchester United for Frenkie de Jong
* However, De Jong is blocking the transfer over owed wages and bonuses
* If he stays, this could leave Barcelona with a problem with registering signings
* The club have agreed to sign Raphinha, but registering him could be an issue

Barcelona have told Frenkie de Jong they need him to leave the club after agreeing a £63million fee with Manchester United.

The deal could rise by a further £8.5m in add-ons and is crucial to Barcelona's finances, but De Jong is in a stand-off with the club over the £17m in deferred wages and bonuses that they owe him.

Barca need to sell the Dutchman to reduce their excessive wage bill, which has led to complications in registering signings such as Raphinha from Leeds.

The Spanish club still want Chelsea's Cesar Azpilicueta, Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski and Sevilla's Jules Kounde, too.

United football director John Murtough and chief executive officer Richard Arnold were in Barcelona on Monday to agree the fee for the 25-year-old midfielder.

United are also on the verge of signing Argentina centre back Lisandro Martinez, 24, from Ajax for £46m - but it is De Jong who has been their top target this summer.

Earlier this week, Barcelona chiefs told De Jong that he would either need to take a pay cut on his £5m-a-year wages or leave the club due to their financial issues.

It emerged that Barcelona have asked De Jong to defer £17m of his wages, and this has become another sticking point for a potential move as the Dutch international is not happy about this and wants the matter resolved out of principle.

De Jong does not appear to have a future in Xavi's team, with the Barcelona boss not viewing him as a defensive midfielder, while he feels that he has sufficient options to pick from to replace the 25-year-old.

Frenkie de Jong has been told by Barcelona to join Manchester United after a deal was agreed. Xavi does not appear to have a place in his team for De Jong, but the Dutchman wants to stay

However, De Jong still seems to want to stick around and fight for his place in the side.

If Barcelona cannot convince the Dutchman to change his mind on leaving, they could be left with a problem with regards to registering new signings this summer.

The club have been busy in the market, signing Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen on free transfers once their contracts had expired at AC Milan and Chelsea respectively.

The duo were unveiled last week, and the club have since moved for Leeds winger Raphinha, announcing that they have agreed a deal in principle with the Premier League outfit on Wednesday.

However, registering these players could be a different matter altogether as the club have banked on offloading De Jong to get his wages off their books.

Barcelona had similar issues last summer as they had to wait to register Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia until they slashed their wage bill.

They eventually had to bid farewell to club icon Lionel Messi, who joined Paris Saint-Germain as they could not afford to keep him due to his lucrative wages.

This problem with registering players appears to be resurfacing, and unless they can come to an agreement with De Jong, it is not easy to see how they will solve it.

Default Re: Frenkie de Jong

Manchester United 'will wait until the LAST DAY of the transfer window to sign Frenkie de Jong' with stubborn Erik ten Hag having no intention of moving on from his £71.5m top target - despite the Dutchman wanting to stay at Barcelona

* Manchester United are ready to hold their nerve and wait to sign Frenkie de Jong
* Erik ten Hag is reportedly willing to wait until the last day of the transfer window
* Dutch Midfielder De Jong is new United boss Ten Hag's top target this summer
* The 25-year-old is thought to be reluctant to leave Barcelona, who want the sale
* De Jong has travelled to Miami for the Spanish side's pre-season tour of the US

Manchester United are ready to wait until the final day of the summer transfer window to sign Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong, according to reports.

The Dutch star is new United manager Erik ten Hag's top target as he looks to overhaul his squad after a hugely disappointing season but is publicly reluctant to move to Old Trafford.

And as reported by the Mirror, Ten Hag, 52, is not giving up and is willing to hold out until the last second to sign gifted central midfielder De Jong, who was his 'favourite player' while managing at former club Ajax.

De Jong is embroiled in a contract stand-off with the cash-strapped Spanish giants, who owe him more than £17million in deferred wages, delaying the potential transfer to United.

He has openly stated he wants to stay at the Nou Camp, and has flown to Miami to participate in Barca's pre-season tour of the US - but the Mirror state sources close to the player have said he is in regular contact with Ten Hag and is happy to join United.

De Jong's infamously bullish agent Ali Dursan is thought to believe that his client publicly revealing his wish to sign for the Red Devils would weaken their negotiating position as they look to reclaim the money owed to them by the club.

So United have continued their pursuit. Club chiefs Richard Arnold and John Murtough have been in Spain to thrash out a deal with Barca sporting director Jordi Cruyff, director of football Mateu Alemany and sports vice-president Rafa Yuste.

Man United 'are ready to wait until the final day of the transfer window to sign Frenkie de Jong'. He has said he wants to stay at the Nou Camp, and flew to Miami to join Barcelona's pre-season tour of the US - but reports state the central midfielder, 25, is privately willing to join United. Dutch star De Jong is the top transfer target for new United manager Erik ten Hag

The two sides have agreed a fee of £63m up front, potentially rising to £71m with add-ons, with Xavi's team desperate to recoup the money and get the Dutchman's £320,000-a-week wages off their books to abide with Financial Fair Play rules.

Barcelona have already presented four new players this summer, including the signing of Brazilian Raphinha from Leeds, agreeing the £42.5m arrival of Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich on Saturday.

But to register the new acquisitions with LaLiga they must slash their €560m (£477m) wage bill. De Jong's contract entitles him to €20m (£17m) next season and the club need him to move on.

Although Ten Hag does not want signing the 25-year-old to turn into a summer-long saga, he understands the wages issue is outside their control and has told the club to continue pushing for the move.

Default Re: Frenkie de Jong

Frenkie de Jong 'DOESN'T want to sign for Man United because he doesn't like Manchester or the erratic way the club is run'... and £71.5m star prefers Bayern Munich or CHELSEA if Barcelona force him out

* Barcelona remain keen to sell midfielder Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United
* A new report in Spain has claimed the Dutch player has no interest in that offer
* He is said to dislike the city of Manchester and the 'erratic' running of the club
* De Jong is said to have not closed off the potential of a move to join Chelsea

Frenkie de Jong has no interest in joining Manchester United because he dislikes the city and believes the club is run erratically, a new report in Spain has claimed.

United reached a £71.5million agreement with Barcelona but issues surrounding a sum of £17m in deferred wages and bonuses owed to the midfielder has stalled any move.

Now, Spanish outlet Sport has claimed that De Jong has absolutely no interest in heading to Old Trafford this summer and would rather head to Chelsea should he be pushed out of Barcelona for a move to the Premier League.

De Jong does not want to leave Barcelona but the Catalan giants need to shift him from the wage bill in order to register their new signings - which include Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen - with LaLiga.

Barcelona has made no secret of shopping De Jong around and he has been Manchester United's top target all summer, with club chiefs Richard Arnold and John Murtough recently spotted in the Spanish city trying to thrash out a deal.

But Sport's report claims that the player has zero interest in making the move to Manchester, a city he is not a fan of.

He is also said to hold real concerns over how United function, with the player's view said to be that it is run 'erratically' by management.

A third factor working against United is that they cannot offer him Champions League football next season having only managed to secure Europa League football prior to Ten Hag's arrival.

Frenkie de Jong reportedly has no interest in joining Erik ten Hag at Man United. The Dutch midfielder is being shopped by Barcelona as they need to reduce their wage bill

While there is a reluctance from De Jong to accept being pushed out of Barcelona, his dream club, it has been reported that it would be Chelsea, not Manchester United, that would be his pick in England.

He is 'not closed' to the idea of a switch to Stamford Bridge given Chelsea do boast Champions League football and De Jong is said to appreciate the 'project' and 'structure' that is being built under new controlling owner Todd Boehly.

London is also viewed as a 'very attractive city' to live in for De Jong and his fiancee Mikky Kiemeney.

Bayern Munich is another landing spot that would appeal to De Jong, it is claimed. His former team-mate and close friend Matthijs de Ligt has just joined the Bundesliga outfit on a deal until 2027.

De Jong's stand-off over the owed wages and bonuses mean that he remains a Barcelona player and he is with the first team group in the United States for their pre-season tour.

He came off the bench in the 6-0 win over Inter Miami, slotting in at centre back, which may be a sign that his chances in midfield will be limited should he dig in to stay beyond the end of the transfer window.

De Jong is said to prefer the idea of working with Julian Nagelsmann at Bayern Munich or Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea as both of those clubs can offer Champions League football. De Jong is determined to stay at Barcelona but faces a fight ahead of the window closing

However, it appears of real importance for Barcelona that they are able to move De Jong, 25, on.

The Catalan club have now presented five new players, and want to bring in Cesar Azpilicueta from Chelsea to bolster their defensive options. But they need to satisfy LaLiga's financial fairplay rules to be able to register their new stars.

Danish defender Christensen, Ivory Coast midfielder Kessie, out of contract Ousmane Dembele, former Leeds winger Raphinha and Lewandowski have all been presented.

Sportsmail reported last week that United won’t give up the chase for the 25-year-old midfielder, even if it takes until after the new season starts. The transfer window closes on September 1.

United accept there may come a point when they will have to accept defeat over signing De Jong and have a number of alternatives in mind, including Ruben Neves of Wolves.

Wolves are willing to sell the Portugal midfielder this summer, as he has two years left on his contract and is unlikely to sign a new one as things stand.

New United manager Ten Hag has made it clear that former Ajax player De Jong is central to his plans so United will make every attempt to get the deal done.

Default Re: Frenkie de Jong

Frenkie de Jong 'tells Manchester United he will NOT move this summer' despite £63m deal being agreed with Barcelona, with Erik ten Hag set to miss out on his top target amid wrangle over £17m in deferred wages

* Manchester United are desperate to sign midfielder Frenkie de Jong this summer
* The Red Devils have agreed a deal with Barcelona, who want to sell the star
* However, De Jong has reportedly made it clear he does not want to join United
* It will come as a blow to Erik ten Hag who is keen to reunite with the midfielder

Frenkie de Jong has reportedly told Manchester United and his Barcelona team-mates that he will not move to Old Trafford this summer.

United are desperate to sign the Dutch midfielder and have had a £63million bid accepted by Barca, but the transfer is still no closer to going through.

That is largely down to De Jong having no desire to make the move, as he is still owed £17million in wages by the Spanish side.

According to Cadena SER, the 25-year-old has informed the Old Trafford hierarchy of his decision and has also spread the word in the Barca dressing room.

It is news that will not please either club. Erik ten Hag is keen to reunite with a player who he managed at Ajax, but may now be forced to look elsewhere as he aims to bolster his midfield.

Barcelona have made it clear that they wish to sell De Jong this summer as they need to shift him from their wage bill in order to register their new signings with LaLiga.

Frenkie de Jong has reportedly told Manchester United that he will not be moving to the club. New United boss Erik ten Hag is keen to reunite with the midfielder, who he managed at Ajax. Part of De Jong's reasoning for staying at Barcelona is that they owe him £17million in wages. Manchester United could turn their attentions to Ruben Neves if they cannot sign De Jong

Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen have all arrived at the Nou Camp this summer despite the club's well-documented financial issues, with Sevilla defender Jules Kounde tipped to soon follow.

They may still find a buyer for De Jong, with Chelsea and Bayern Munich other potential suitors, but his desire not to move to United will come as a blow as Barca had agreed a fee with the Red Devils.

Yet the LaLiga side must also look at the part they are playing in the midfielder's stand off due to the hefty sum of wages they owe him.

Gary Neville has urged De Jong to sue Barca over the unpaid figure of £17million, particularly as they have been splashing transfer fees and wages on new players in the meantime.

'De Jong should consider legal action versus Barcelona and all players should be behind him!' the former United player said on Twitter.

'A club spending fortunes on new players whilst not paying the ones they have under contract their full money is immoral and a breach.

'FIFPRO should be all over bullying like this and stop it.'

Sportsmail reported earlier this month that United won't give up the chase for De Jong, even if it takes until after the new season starts. The transfer window closes on September 1.

The Red Devils accept there may come a point when they will have to accept defeat over signing the midfielder and have a number of alternatives in mind, including Premier League stars Ruben Neves and Youri Tielemans.

Ten Hag has made it clear that De Jong is central to his plans so United chiefs Richard Arnold and John Murtough will make every attempt to get the deal done.

Manchester United 'are preparing a FINAL offer to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona with the Premier League giants to match his £450,000-a-week salary and wipe out the £17m he is owed in wages' as Erik ten Hag tries to land his main target

* Manchester United are ready to make midfielder Frenkie de Jong their top earner
* They will offer De Jong a £450,000 per week salary to lure him to Old Trafford
* The club are willing to cover the £17million owed by Barcelona in deferred wages
* The player has so far snubbed Manchester United in an attempt to stay in Spain

Manchester United will make a final last-ditch attempt to lure Frenkie de Jong away from Barcelona as Erik ten Hag instructs Old Trafford chiefs to pull out every possible stop to secure his top summer transfer target.

The Manchester club's hunt for De Jong has turned into the summer's biggest transfer saga as negotiations between the two sides and the player prepare to enter their twelfth week.

United are willing to make the Dutch midfielder the club's highest paid player by matching his current £450,000-a-week salary.

They are also willing to pay the £17million De Jong is owed by Barcelona in deferred wages, as reported by Sport in Spain.

It's understood Manchester United's transfer chiefs will try and meet the Dutch star's representatives when Barcelona return from their pre-season tour of America.

The issue surrounding outstanding wage payments has been the biggest stumbling point so far in efforts to bring the ex-Ajax midfielder to Old Trafford.

A reported deal worth £74million has already been agreed with Barcelona but De Jong is currently unwilling to swap La Liga for Premier League football.

Manchester United are willing to offer top target Frenkie de Jong £450,000 a week in wages. Erik ten Hag is desperate to bring the Barcelona midfielder to Old Trafford this summer. De Jong has snubbed a move to Manchester so far with the player keen to stay at Barcelona. United are also prepared to cover the £17million in deferred wages owed to the Dutch star

Should he remain firm on his stance to stay in Spain then De Jong will have to take a pay cut despite the financially-struck club spending over £100million on new players this summer with Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Jules Kounde, Franck Kessie, and Andreas Christensen all joining.

United's failure to qualify for the Champions League has also made any effort to sign the 25-year-old harder with the player keen to play in Europe's top competition and fight for his place at Barcelona.

Erik ten Hag has made the midfielder his top summer transfer target but has already started to target alternative players as the move threatens to fall through.

As Reported by Sportsmail, Manchester United are considering Stuttgart striker Sasa Kalajdzic as well as Benjamin Sesko of Red Bull Salzburg.

Austria international Kalajdzic, who is 6ft 7ins tall, is available for around £17million and is on United's list of options.

The Austrian joined Stuttgart from Admira Wacker in 2019 and has proceeded to score 24 goals in 57 games.

Sesko, meanwhile, has scored 13 goals in 41 appearances for RB Salzburg. He gained experience during a loan spell at FC Liefering between 2019 and 2021.

Ten Hag wants to bolster his attack as United prepare for the start of the new Premier League campaign.

So far this summer United have signed Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen and Tyrell Malacia.

Default Re: Frenkie de Jong

Frenkie de Jong is 'REFUSING to negotiate with Man United and Chelsea' and 'will NOT agree to lower his wages' at Barcelona despite the club 'threatening legal action over his 2020 extension', as ugly summer transfer saga continues

* Manchester United and Chelsea are both interested in Frenkie de Jong
* However, the midfielder is refusing to negotiate with either Premier League club
* He is also not agreeing to lowering his wages at current club, Barcelona
* The LaLiga side have threatened legal action over his 2020 contract extension

Frenkie de Jong is refusing to negotiate with Chelsea and Manchester United, despite the two Premier League clubs being interested in signing the Barcelona midfielder.

De Jong has been linked with a move to Old Trafford throughout the summer and United agreed a £63m fee with Barcelona last month, while Chelsea recently joined the race for his signature.

However, De Jong is refusing to consider a move, as things stand, according to Spanish outlet Sport.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are currently trying to convince De Jong to take a reduction to his salary, but the Dutchman is not agreeing to their demands, and has made it clear that he will not be pressured into lowering his wages.

This latest twist follows reports on Monday that Barcelona have told De Jong that they want to rip up his current contract and revert back to the one that he signed when he first joined in 2019, as they claim that his latest deal which was handed to him by club's former board involves 'criminality'.

De Jong was given a massive two-year extension by previous Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu and is due to earn €20m (£16.8m) net this season and as much as €25m (£21m) the following campaign with £17m of deferred wages factored in.

However, according to The Athletic, the club wrote to the player on July 15 to tell him that they 'found evidence of criminal actions on behalf of the parties who signed his renewal' in October 2020.

The letter reportedly says that Barcelona believe they are in a position to launch criminal proceedings to 'ascertain where responsibility resides for the supposed wrongdoing.'

De Jong has already been warned that if he stays at Barcelona he either needs to take a pay cut or find himself used from the bench (as he was in Sunday's friendly win over Pumas) or even as a centre-back (as he was on the US pre-season tour).

Frenkie de Jong is refusing to negotiate a transfer to Chelsea or Manchester United. The midfielder is also not agreeing to lower his wages at Barcelona, as things stand. Barcelona president Joan Laporta wants De Jong to revert back to his 2019 contract. Xavi has used De Jong sparingly and out of position, but the Dutchman is still staying put. Barcelona want De Jong to leave so they can register new signings like Robert Lewandowski

The club had hoped that the prospect of him not playing in his position in the lead-up to November's World Cup would make the player crack but so far he has held his ground.

Threat of legal action could therefore be a ploy to get the midfielder to revert to his original contract and keep him at the club.

It's claimed the previous Barcelona board are 'confident' in the legality of the contract renewal signed by De Jong and that it was signed off by lawyers and LaLiga.

Gerard Pique, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Clement Lenglet were all given new contracts at the same time and it's claimed they are having similar conversations with the club.

Barcelona see the selling of the Dutchman as the answer to the current financial constraints that are stopping them from registering new signings, including Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha.

They also believe his departure will allow them to pursue a deal for Bernardo Silva, who started Manchester City's first game of the season at West Ham on the bench on Sunday.

The financial gain will come for them with the wages because the City midfielder will earn a fraction of the Dutch international's projected wages.

De Jong is not budging on lowering his salary at the moment, though, which could cause his relationship with the club and their fans to sour.

Barcelona team-mate Martin Braithwaite was loudly booed by fans when he was introduced to the crowd ahead of Sunday's final pre-season match after it was reported that he was refusing to leave the club until he received his full salary.

De Jong appears to be taking a similar stance, and this may lead to supporters turning on him as well.

Default Re: Frenkie de Jong

Manchester United's offer for Frenkie de Jong 'EXPIRES' as the Dutchman turns down a £70m switch to Old Trafford, coming as another blow to Erik ten Hag - and leaving Chelsea in the driving seat

* Man United's offer for Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong has reportedly now expired
* Erik ten Hag's insistence on De Jong has hampered United's other transfer plans
* Chelsea are in the driving seat to get the midfielder away from the Nou Camp

The long running saga of Manchester United's summer pursuit of Frenkie de Jong may have hit its final snag, with a report in Holland claiming the club's offer to Barcelona has expired.

United seemed to be pushing to acquire the 25-year-old midfielder in a deal worth around £70million, in hopes of teaming De Jong up with new manager Erik ten Hag after their successful time together at Ajax.

However, Dutch football podcast Kick-off of De Telegraaf has said that the offer the Red Devils made to Barcelona to obtain the services of De Jong has run out.

And with Manchester United's poor start to the Premier League season, it looks like the undefeated Chelsea could be in prime position to steal De Jong away.

Barcelona have tried to get De Jong to leave their set-up all summer, owing to the Catalan club's financial situation, with the Dutch player owed a reported £17m in deferred wages which he has not been willing to forgo.

However, the Dutch midfielder did feature in Barcelona's opening La Liga fixture, a goalless draw with Rayo Vallecano.

Manchester United's offer to Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong has expired, according to a report. Erik ten Hag's wish to sign de Jong has meant United have been hampered with other transfers

While United cut a deal with Barcelona last month, it is thought the midfielder was reluctant to join the Red Devils because of the lack of Champions League football this season - and now that window appears to have closed.

Ten Hag's desire to get de Jong has reportedly hit United's other transfer ambitions, with only a couple of weeks of the window remaining before it shuts for the rest of 2022.

And Chelsea, under new chairman Todd Boehly, may be the club with the budget to also meet Barcelona's valuation of the star - and offer him the escape from the Nou Camp that he has not taken so far.
