Ashley Young Jadi Kapten Baru Manchester United
Okdwitya Karina Sari - detikSport

Cardiff - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer mengumumkan kapten baru Manchester United.

Bayu Baskoro Febianto - detikSport

'He gets destroyed twice and yet still manages to block': Andros Townsend steps in to defend Ashley Young after Crystal Palace's Twitter account mocked the veteran United full-back's defending

* Andros Townsend has defended Ashley Young after Crystal Palace mocked him

Andros Townsend has jumped to the defence of Ashley Young on Monday after the Manchester United player was mocked by Crystal Palace for his efforts to tackle Wilfried Zaha.

Palace's official Twitter account shared a clip from the game at Old Trafford that showed Zaha tying Young up in knots on the right side before the veteran defender eventually got back into position and blocked the cross.

Unhappy with his club's mocking of Young, Townsend replied to the tweet on Monday and launched a passionate defence of the United player.

He wrote: 'A 34 y/o (year-old) ex winger vs one of the leagues best wingers.... he gets destroyed twice yet still manages to block the cross.... we should be applauding this not making fun of it #respect '.

Young initially started the game on the bench but was forced into action when Luke Shaw pulled up with an injury on the left side of defence.

Palace went on to claim a surprise victory at Old Trafford with Patrick Van Aanholt scoring a stoppage time winner for the Eagles.

Daniel James appeared to have salvaged a point for United with just a minute of regular time remaining, but United could not see the game out and Van Aanholt earned Palace a first league win at Old Trafford in 30 years as he finished off a swift counter-attack three minutes into time added on.

The late drama came after Marcus Rashford missed a 70th-minute penalty, having taken over spot-kick duties from Paul Pogba, who also missed a penalty in Monday's 1-1 draw at Wolves

Palace's social media faux pas came on the back of United putting their foot in it before Saturday's match.

After announcing the United team for the game, the club's Twitter account used the hashtag #MUNCHE referring to Chelsea.

When they had noticed the error and rather than delete it, United staff tweeted: '*MUNCRY. Wish we were playing Chelsea again, though...'.

United started their Premier League season with a thumping 4-0 win over Frank Lampard's side at Old Trafford.

'I think we're very close': Ashley Young believes Manchester United are moving in the right direction after beating Leicester

* Ashley Young is confident Manchester United are moving in the right direction
* United returned to winning ways as they secured a 1-0 victory against Leicester
* Young was delighted that United were able to keep a clean sheet on Saturday

Manchester United captain Ashley Young believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are very close to gelling and kicking on.

The season-opening shellacking of Chelsea proved a false dawn for the Old Trafford faithful, with draws at Wolves and Southampton book-ending an embarrassing home loss to Crystal Palace.

But United put that concerning start to the Premier League behind them and got back to winning ways by seeing off previously unbeaten Leicester on Saturday afternoon.

Marcus Rashford's early penalty was enough to seal a 1-0 win for Solskjaer's injury-hit side and Young believes things are coming together after some unlucky results.

'I think we're very close,' he said.

'A lot was said after the Southampton game but, to be honest, I think they had two chances and one of them they scored from. It wasn't a bad performance. I didn't think it was a bad performance.

'We've just got to gel things together, keep getting on the scoresheet and I think it could have been a different game today.

'If we had gone on and got a second goal after we got the first then it would have been totally different.

'But we had to show that resilience and that grit and that determination not to concede a goal and we did that today.'

Ashley Young is confident that Manchester United are moving in the right direction. Young was delighted that United managed to keep a clean sheet as they defeated Leicester

Young was delighted to emerge from a tough game with three points - and just United's second clean sheet in 16 league matches.

'When you play as a defender, you want to keep a clean sheet and hope the boys up the top can go and get the goals,' Young told BBC Radio 5 live.

'On days you're not going to play well and you're going to win games. On days you're going to play well and not win games.

'There's going to be a balance and we just want to do the right things and keep applying ourselves the way we have this season.'

Summer signings Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James showed more promising signs against the Foxes, while fellow new boy Harry Maguire performed admirably against the club he left in the summer for £80million.

'You know, I think the manager's said about him, he talks non-stop, he's a real leader and he can play as well,' Young added.

'The style of play we use, we use the centre-halves a lot to play out from the back and everybody has got confidence in him.

'And everybody has confidence in Victor (Lindelof), Jonah [Phil Jones], Marcos (Rojo) - all the defenders, all the centre-backs can go in there and do the job.

'Again he showed today what a man he is, and I think as a backline we played a really good game.

'The main objective was to get three points and that's what we did.'

Brendan Rodgers echoed Young's sentiments, calling Maguire 'a good guy and a top-class player' despite Leicester's travelling fans letting their anger at his departure known.

Caglar Soyuncu has stepped up the plate impressively since the England international's exit but was guilty of the foul that allowed Rashford to wrap up victory from the spot.

'Listen, that happens with young players,' Leicester boss Rodgers said. 'They make mistakes.

'He's been fantastic stepping in from when Harry went. I thought apart from that he was really dominant in the game today and played well.

'But this is the nature of it. There's lots of young players in the squad, they'll make mistakes, so we'll help them get over that and make sure the confidence is ready through the week for the next game.'

'It was like the boss had walked back through the door': Ashley Young claims Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revived the spirit of Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United

* Ashley Young says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revived spirit of Sir Alex Ferguson
* United have lacked consistency this season but Young praised Solskjaer
* It is 33 years since legendary boss Ferguson was appointed as United manager

Ashley Young believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revived the spirit of Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United despite their difficult start to the season.

On the 33rd anniversary of Ferguson’s appointment at Old Trafford in November 1986, Young praised the impact Solskjaer has made in the last 10 months as United prepare to face Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League on Thursday night.

‘Since he came in it was like the boss had walked back through the door,’ said Young, who is United’s captain and longest-serving player. ‘Same traits, same winning mentality, same desire, hunger.

Ashley Young (left) says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (right) has revived the spirit of Sir Alex Ferguson. Young says Solskjaer has the same winning mentality, desire and hunger as Ferguson

‘He has been here as a player and knows what the club is. That is what the club wanted and you can see at times in training he wants to put his boots on and join in. It has been fantastic.’

Even so, United have made their worst start since 1986 when Ferguson was brought in to replace Ron Atkinson. Saturday’s defeat at Bournemouth saw them drop back into 10th place in the table, 18 points behind leaders Liverpool after just 11 games.

‘Obviously it has been tough,’ added Young. ‘It has been fine margins in some games. Like when we have been winning 1-0 and we come in after drawing the game and it feels like a defeat.

‘But there are signs there that things are improving and we have shown that in the last couple of weeks. It is about getting on the front foot. We look a much better team on the front foot.

‘When we get early goals – especially tomorrow if we get an early goal – there are plenty more goals there to be had. It would give everyone a confidence boost and for us to go on a run.

‘Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I know what I see every day working hard on the training pitch. I know it’s possible to go out there and get results. It has not gone as well as we would have liked.

‘We have gone on a mini run (before Bournemouth) but that is not going to dampen our spirits. We have got a big game tomorrow to go and qualify out of the group stages and we’ve got games coming up which we believe are winnable games.’

'We didn't even meet Liverpool': Ashley Young reveals he snubbed Reds and Manchester City before joining United in 2011 after two-hour meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson where they discussed 'horses and wine'

* Ashley Young says Liverpool and Man City wanted to sign him from Aston Villa
*Young had talks with City but was swayed by Manchester United's interest
* The winger says Sir Alex Ferguson warned him he'd 'sink or swim' at Old Trafford

Ashley Young has revealed he rejected Manchester City and Liverpool in favour of a move to Manchester United back in 2011.

Young had a year left on his contract at Aston Villa and was a wanted man after being named in the PFA Team of the Year twice in 2008 and 2009.

The 34-year-old had talks with City and was also the subject of interest from Liverpool before United came calling.

'My agent called me and said: "Listen, you're going into the last year of your contract, there are a few teams that are in for you",' he told Manutd.com.

'He said Liverpool. We'd already spoken to [Manchester] City. Then he said United had come in. And I said: "When am I meeting Sir Alex? Where's the pen?" There was no other place I wanted to go.

'The history of the club, the players that were here, what they'd achieved. For me, that was the place I wanted to be.

'I wanted to go there and put my marker down on this club and play for the biggest club, for me, in the world. As soon as my agent said that... we didn't even meet Liverpool!'

Ashley Young says he rejected both Liverpool and Man City in favour of a move to Man United. Ashley Young says he rejected both Liverpool and Man City in favour of a move to Man United. Young says his meeting with Ferguson was two hours and largely about 'horses and wine'

Before he put pen to paper on a deal with United, Young says he had a lengthy meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson which left him desperate to join the club.

'I always remember the meeting with Sir Alex in London. I think it was probably a two-hour meeting. Ten minutes of that, we spoke about football, the rest was about horses and wine! It was one of them where the boss has just got that aura.

'He challenged me and said you either sink or swim. That's basically what it is, you're going to be challenged every day. And that's what I wanted.

'Ultimately, it was down to me to make the decision and as soon as I could sign here, I wanted to sign.'

Young has since gone on to make 257 appearances for the club, scoring 18 goals and making 43 assists, while helping United to win the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League.

'If a bird s*** in my mouth, you're going to have a reaction:' Ashley Young insists bird poo did NOT land in his mouth during infamous 2014 clip as Manchester United defender claims 'someone edited it because I know it never happened'

* Ashley Young has broken his silence on a viral clip from a game in 2014
* The United defender was barking orders when an object from the sky dropped
* It is widely believed the object came from a bird flying over the stadium

Ashley Young has broken his silence on a viral clip of a bird supposedly defecating in his mouth while playing for Manchester United in 2014.

During a Premier League tie with Swansea City at Old Trafford, Young is seen barking orders at his United team-mates, before an object appears to enter his mouth.

The clip went viral in the immediate aftermath, with fans believing that the object was from a bird flying over. Since then, the 34-year-old has long been the butt of jokes about the incident, with gifs and short clips being shared on social media with increasing regularity.

Ashley Young has broken his silence on a clip that went viral involving him in 2014

But the veteran defender has finally had his say on what happened that day.

Speaking to the official UTD Podcast, Young said: 'No, it didn't happen! I've said this for god knows how long but it got to a point where I was like "I need to do an interview to say it didn't happen" but I just couldn't be bothered.

'It had gone viral and is still going viral I think now and even my wife and kids turn round and say "yeah but the bird pooed in your mouth", no it didn't.'

The defender was barking instructions at team-mates before an object dropped from above. The clip was shared on social media with fans believing it to be bird poo, but Young insists that was not the case

Young, who joined United under Sir Alex Ferguson from Aston Villa, insisted that camera trickery was the reason for the misunderstanding, and said that had it been the case, his reaction would have been very different.

'It actually didn't. And I said at the time, I'm sure the game was on TV, someone must have stopped it, recorded it, done whatever they did and put it together because it never actually happened. I think someone edited it because I know it never happened.

'I'm actually relieved that I've got the evidence… I think you can tell it's not real because I think you can tell, if a bird s*** in my mouth, you're going to have a reaction. Why is it that it's just gone, or carry on filming me? There you go.'

Fortunately for Young, he bears no ill feeling towards the clip, stressing that it does not bother him.

'It is what it is, it's like, fair enough,' he said. 'I know what happened.'

Manchester United 'set to release Ashley Young at the end of the season' with the 34-year-old edged out by the storming form of Aaron Wan-Bissaka

* Ashley Young is reportedly set to be released by Manchester United this season
* The 34-year-old full-back is finding opportunities in the first team limited
* Aaron Wan-Bissaka has established himself as United's first-choice right-back

Manchester United are reportedly ready to allow Ashley Young's exit in the summer by releasing him at the end of the current season.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka arrived from Crystal Palace for £50million in the summer and has established himself as the first-choice right-back under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Evening Standard report that talks over a new deal at United have not taken place and he would be free to speak to clubs outside of England from January.

Ashley Young is reportedly set to leave Manchester United at the end of the current season. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has made himself Manchester United's clear first-choice right-back. Young is United's club captain and has been a mainstay of the side for the last decade

Young is United's club captain and while he is versatile and can play down both wings, his route into the team is set to be blocked by Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot and Brandon Williams.

The club elected to hand Young a one-year contract extension at the end of last season given his invaluable experience in what is fast becoming a young dressing room at United.

But Solskjaer appears keen to further shuffle the squad and make more signings, with a focus on young players brimming with potential.

Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James arrived in the summer and teenage striker Mason Greenwood has been handed an increasingly important role by Solskjaer.

Speaking this week about his plans for further signings, the Norwegian boss said: 'We’re looking to strengthen in many positions.

'If you look at our squad compared to others we’re getting there, but need two or three players to have a squad with enough numbers to rotate throughout a long season and we’ll see what we sign.'
