Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to be rewarded with an improved Manchester United contract worth over £7m a year until at least 2024, with talks to take place at the end of the season

* Manchester United are set to reward Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a new contract
* Sportsmail understands United will begin talks over a deal of at least two years
* The United boss will also be handed raise from his current £7million-a-year deal
* United, currently second in the Premier League, are pleased with his progress

Manchester United are set to reward Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a new contract this summer.

Sportsmail understands United will begin talks over a deal of at least two years with the Norwegian at the end of the season.

Solskjaer is expected to see an uplift on his £7million-a-year salary, which expires next year, and the move underlines the board's commitment to their manager.

Manchester United are set to reward Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a new contract this summer

United, currently second in the Premier League behind rivals Manchester City, are pleased with the progress being made under his stewardship.

The club's managing director Richard Arnold praised the job Solskjaer has done last week. 'No one in the world is happier than me with the phenomenal success he is bringing,' Arnold said.

'When you're inside the club and you are seeing the work of the man and the character, it just makes you so happy. He deserves to succeed, and he is, and that makes me very happy.'

Appointed in December 2018, Solskjaer has yet to win silverware at the helm and saw United knocked out of the FA Cup by Leicester City before the international break.

United are second in the Premier League and are favourites to win this season's Europa League. Club's managing director Richard Arnold is delighted with the club's 'phenomenal success'

They are favourites to lift the Europa League this term and face LaLiga outfit Granada in the away first leg of their quarter-final on April 8.

Finalising a new contract for the 48-year-old over the summer months would remove any distractions and lingering discussion regarding his future at Old Trafford.

There is hope that Solskjaer can narrow the gap with City next season and see United challenge for a league crown they have not won since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure in 2013.

Solskjaer wants to bring in fresh faces in the coming months, although the club are reluctant to enter a bidding war for Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland.

United restructured their recruitment department earlier this month, with John Murtough promoted to football director and Darren Fletcher appointed as technical director. Solskjaer was assured he will remain manager rather than head coach, a key differential when discussing transfer targets.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals he abandoned a scouting mission during his Molde days because the player he was watching had a MOHICAN... as Manchester United boss admits he was 'not interested' after seeing his haircut

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed the time he abandoned a scouting mission
* The manager was set to watch a transfer target during his time at Molde
* But he opted to leave after seeing the player was sporting a mohican haircut
* The Manchester United boss said he and his scout decided to go home

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed he once abandoned a scouting mission because the player he was set to watch was sporting a mohican.

Solskjaer had travelled to assess a transfer target while he was manager of Molde but he took one look at the player's haircut and quickly decided the player was not for him.

The Manchester United boss relayed the story during a Q&A with Sky Sports.

'I once went to see a player and as he walked out of the dressing room or through the tunnel onto the pitch, he had a mohican, this was when I was back in Norway,' said Solskjaer.

'And I just said to my scout: "let's go home, not interested." That was a very short scouting trip.'

The story came up after Solskjaer had been asked about his first impressions of Bruno Fernandes when he went to watch him play for Sporting Lisbon.

'What you see close up is the personality because you just follow him (Fernandes). I'd rather have Bruno's fire in the belly and desire.

'It's so important for him to win and he makes every decision for the referee, decision for every team-mate. So what was a guy who never allowed anyone to rest, he wanted to be the best all the time.'

The United boss was also asked a series of other questions, including which player from the 1999 treble winners he would most like to add to his current squad.

'They were all unbelievable individuals in a fantastic team,' he said.

'There’s some absolute top players there that you’d have skills and attributes for every single player - you’d want Becks’s crosses, you’d want Giggs’s dribbles, Jaap’s dominance at the back, Ronny Johnsen’s pace, Scholes’s everything.

'You want every one of them, to be fair, but I’ve always said it and I have to say it again, if I choose one player: Roy Keane. Everything he did, he was a leader. He pushed everyone.'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals that former Manchester United stars listened to Roy Keane more than Gary Neville, with Red Devils boss joking that outspoken Englishman 'STILL' talks too much

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed that United stars listened to Keane over Neville
* Roy Keane and Gary Neville held leadership roles in the United dressing room
* However, Solskjaer said stars would pay more attention to the feisty Irishman

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that former Manchester United stars listened to Roy Keane more than Gary Neville as the Red Devils boss joked that the Englishman was 'talking too much' in the dressing room.

Solskjaer, 48, this week celebrated two years in the hot seat at Old Trafford, having returned to the club after enjoying a glittering playing career as part of Sir Alex Ferguson's squad from 1996 until 2007.

The Norwegian helped United to six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and a Champions League triumph, playing a crucial role in the team led by feisty Irish captain Keane and trusted lieutenant Neville.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed that United stars listened to Roy Keane more than Gary Neville. Solskjaer enjoyed a glittering playing career at Old Trafford with the outspoken pair

While Solskjaer has pursued the coaching career path since retiring, Keane and Neville have flourished in the television studios, with the pair offering insights regarding the latest Premier League action.

And the United boss has revealed that his old team-mates would pay greater attention to Keane's observations than Neville's, joking that the former full back still talks too much.

'We listened more to Roy than to Gary that's for sure,' he told Sky Sports. 'Gary was talking too much and he still does. That's just Gary and we got used to it.

However, the Norwegian said that players would pay more attention to Keane than Neville. Solskjaer joked that Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville was 'talking too much' and 'still does'. The pair have been critical of United in the past but Solskjaer says they know what is expected

'He has got good opinions, both of them very vocal. If there is one you wouldn't go against it is Roy Keane.'

Now, the outspoken duo offer their views on Solskjaer's United from the commentary box and studio, at times criticising the current crop of stars following lacklustre performances.

Solskjaer added that he understands that criticism of his players is part of the pair's jobs, insisting that they are well placed to know the expectations set at the club.

He said: 'They know the demands of Manchester United standards that we set so when they get angry with us that is fine, that is just their jobs.

'They have both been managers so they know what the standards here [are] and they know the demands of a manager.

'So they know what we are going through every single day. How successful they have been, they know themselves.'

United are set to offer Solskjaer an improved three-year contract at the end of the season, with club chiefs delighted with the 'phenomenal success' brought by the Norwegian this season.

The Red Devils look destined to secure Champions League football for next season, having made an early exit from the competition's group stage before Christmas. United also crashed out of the FA Cup to Leicester this month and exited the Carabao Cup at the semi final stage.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gets a fright after being CHASED by autograph hunter... as Manchester United review the Red Devils boss' safety protocols

* Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was hunted down for a signature
* After being chased by a fan in a car, the club are reviewing his security measures

Manchester United are reviewing manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s travel arrangements after he was targeted in an extraordinary incident involving what has been described as an ‘overzealous autograph-hunter’.

The Norwegian, who makes time for the club’s supporters whenever possible, was leaving the city-centre Lowry Hotel, where United stay before home matches, when he was approached on the steps.

Having got to his own car, Solskjaer was then followed in another car by a frustrated punter, who got out at the first set of traffic lights and banged on the manager’s window.

United believe the incident was a ‘one-off’ but are examining Solskjaer’s arrangements.

Clubs in the North West were already on high alert after Sportsmail revealed Everton back-up keeper Robin Olsen and his family were confronted by masked raiders at the family home in Cheshire last month.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his Manchester United coaching staff are unhappy with Gary Neville's role in anti-Glazer backlash and want pundit to tone down his rhetoric to avoid more violent protests from angry fans

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is unhappy over Gary Neville's role in anti-Glazer backlash
* The pundit was praised for passionately criticising the European Super League
* There were concerns that his attacks helped to fuel Sunday's violent protests
* Solskjaer and his coaching staff believe Neville needs to tone down his rhetoric

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching staff are understood to be unhappy over Gary Neville's role in the anti-Glazer backlash at Manchester United.

The popular Sky TV pundit was widely praised for his impassioned criticism of the attempt by United and English football's other Big Six clubs to launch a European Super League.

But there are concerns that Neville's continued attacks on the Glazers helped to fuel Sunday's violent protests at Old Trafford, with former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan accusing the former United defender of 'calling on a lynch mob'.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be unhappy over Gary Neville's role in the anti-Glazer backlash. The pundit was praised for passionately criticising the proposed European Super League

While Solskjaer and his staff were against the ESL, they are upset over the postponement of the game against Liverpool and believe that Neville needs to tone down his rhetoric to avoid further unrest.

The United boss made an unprompted reference to the issue on Wednesday, although the club's attempts to limit the number of questions about the protest prevented a follow-up.

'When it becomes a police matter that's not nice and it has not been helped by certain individuals,' said Solskjaer.

'I have to say that's another part of it, that's your (the media's) end of it.'

It emerged this week that Neville has put together a WhatsApp group of fellow pundits and broadcasters to maintain a united front against any breakaway plans.

Solskjaer revealed that the American owners have offered him a personal apology over the fallout from their plans for a European Super League.

'I've been communicating with the owners and I've got an apology, personally,' said Solskjaer.

'They've apologised to the fans about how this came out. They've all accepted it was the wrong thing to do, which is a start. Let's continue that.

'It's a difficult position for me to be in. I've always had a good relationship (with the Glazers). They listen to me and they do listen to the fans. I'm sure there will be better communication coming.

'The last few weeks have been difficult. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to see that we've had challenges and friction.

'The players have done terrific. I would be sad if all their good work is disrupted, so our focus is on playing well and getting to a final now.'

Meanwhile, United's game against Liverpool has been rearranged for May 13.

MARTIN SAMUEL: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks like a Cardiff boss again but with better players. Ed Woodward wanted a man United fans could back... none of this is his fault, really - he's done what was asked

* Doubts persist over whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can reach the pinnacle
* He is looking more like the boss he was at Cardiff City, just with better players
* Man United opted for popularity and nostalgia when giving him the job full time
* None of that is his fault and the Norwegian has done what was asked of him

Hearing Dominic Cummings speak this week, it is hard to believe he ever seriously thought Boris Johnson was the man to lead Britain.

More, Johnson was a populist who could get Brexit done. And Cummings, more than anything, wanted to get Brexit done.

It was much the same when Ed Woodward helped steer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer into his position of power.

It is barely consistent that Manchester United should jump from Louis van Gaal to Jose Mourinho, to the former manager of Molde and Cardiff City, but United were under a cloud.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (middle) could not steer Manchester United to Europa League glory

And Woodward needed to lift that cloud. So he gave the job to a local hero, a boyish, positive, smiling force for good who the supporters would gladly indulge, short-term at least.

And then, when he started winning — and he won some very big games too — he became irresistible. Everyone said so.

Yet was he ever really the man for the job, in Woodward's eyes, or just a man for the moment?

We cannot know for certain; but as another season slipped by without United's name on a trophy, Solskjaer looked less like a manager who can return United to the pinnacle, and more like the manager of Cardiff City. Cardiff, but with really, really good players.

Solskjaer's time in Wales ended with Cardiff 17th in the Championship, having been relegated.

The United manager has not yet done enough to convince that he is the man for the long term. United hoped Bruno Fernandes or Edinson Cavani could save them and there was no strategy

Yet even his critics admit there were days when they played some really nice football.

There wasn't a noticeable structure, or style, as there was under his predecessor Malky Mackay, or Neil Warnock, who took the job two years after his departure. Yet when it came off, Cardiff looked good. The problem was, that with the players Solskjaer had at his disposal, it didn't come off too often.

Now imagine that, but with Bruno Fernandes, Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford and in the red shirt of Manchester United.

With elite talent, the free approach comes off quite often; but even when it only works for a half, or just 30 minutes, that will still be too much for a great many of Manchester United's opponents.

In a season when Liverpool suffered insurmountable injury problems, and Chelsea and Tottenham sacked their managers, it was enough to come second. By 12 points, admittedly. Yet it felt like progress.

And then a European final came along and met Cardiff plus plus with structure.

And they couldn't adapt and they couldn't break it down and just hoping that Fernandes finds Cavani with a pass was far removed from an identifiable strategy.

Yet this is what United's executives wished for at the time. Popularity. Nostalgia. A man the people could get behind.

None of this is Solskjaer's fault, really. He has done exactly what was asked of him, and no more.

Manchester United confirm Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has signed a new deal that will see him stay at the club until 2024 with the option for a further year... as he targets first piece of silverware as boss

* Manchester United have extended Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's contract until 2024
* The Norwegian has signed a deal which gives him the option of a further year
* United have improved year-on-year under their former player Solskjaer
* They finished second in the league last year but lost in the Europa League final
* Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho as United manager back in December 2018

Manchester United have confirmed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has signed a new contract to extend his stay as manager at Old Trafford.

The Norwegian has signed a deal which will take him through until at least 2024, with an option of a further year.

Solskjaer was appointed on a caretaker basis to replace Jose Mourinho in December 2018 before he was made permanent manager in March 2019 on a three-year deal.

'Everyone knows the feeling I have for this club, and I am delighted to have signed this new contract. It is an exciting time for Manchester United, we have built a squad with a good balance of youth and experienced players

'I have a fantastic coaching team around me, and we are all ready to take that next step on our journey. Manchester United wants to be winning the biggest and best trophies and that's what we are all striving for. We have improved, both on and off the pitch, and that will continue over the coming seasons.

'I can't wait to get out in front of a packed Old Trafford and get this campaign started.'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has signed a new deal to extend his stay at Manchester United until 2024. It's a good week for United fans after they also confirmed the signing of Jadon Sancho

Though Solskjaer is yet to win a trophy during his reign as manager at United, the club have improved year-on-year since his appointment.

They just had their best season under the Norwegian, finishing second in the league, their highest placing since the 2017-18 season.

The club also made the final of the Europa League but suffered a shock 1-0 defeat by Spanish side Villarreal.

United are looking to take the next step this season and mount a challenge for the Premier League title, which they haven't won since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

They have already strengthened the squad this summer with the long-awaited addition of Jadon Sancho.

The English winger was announced as a United player after completing a £73million move from Borussia Dortmund.

Solskjaer is hoping the club can make further business this summer, with Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane strongly linked.

It has been reported that the Spanish giants are hoping to secure £50m for the player that is out of contract next summer, though United are looking to push that fee down.

United hope to mount a title challenge this season after not winning the league since 2013. United finished second in the league last season but lost in the Europa League final. Solskjaer has been backed by owners Joel and Avram Glazer for at least another three seasons

Ed Woodward, executive vice-chairman, said of Solskjaer's new deal: 'Ole and his staff have worked tirelessly putting the foundations in place for long-term success on the pitch.

'The results of that have become increasingly visible over the past two seasons and we are all looking forward to seeing this exciting team develop further in the years ahead.

'What is especially pleasing is the way this progress has been achieved with a blend of young, homegrown talent and top-class recruits, playing attacking football in the best traditions of Manchester United. We are more confident than ever that, under Ole's leadership, we are heading in the right direction.'

If Solskjaer reaches the end of his deal and takes the option of a further year, he will have been manager of the club for six-and-a-half seasons.

The 48-year-old was previously a player at the club from 1996 and 2007, famously scoring the winner which sealed their late 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final.

Manchester United would be 'forced to pay Ole Gunnar Solskjaer £7.5m' if they sack him... but the under pressure manager survives for now after Liverpool thrashing and will take charge for his side's visit to Tottenham

* Manchester United have lost five of their last nine under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* But the United manager will avoid the sack for now ahead of trip to Tottenham
* United chiefs met on Monday to discuss the future of under pressure boss
* Meeting came about following horror show in 5-0 defeat by Liverpool

Manchester United would reportedly have to pay Ole Gunnar Solskjaer £7.5million if they choose to sack him, although the under pressure manager will be given more time to turn around the club's form.

United have lost five of their last nine games in all competitions and pressure piled on Solskjaer on Sunday after his side suffered one of their most humiliating results following a 5-0 hammering at home to bitter rivals Liverpool.

During that run they have also won just three games with all the winning goals coming within the final 10 minutes.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under pressure at Manchester United following a slump in form. United have lost five of their last nine games including a 5-0 hammering by Liverpool

According to The Sun, dismissing Solskjaer from his role would result in the Norwegian being given a full year's salary as a severance package by the club, worth around £7.5m.

The reports adds it puts him around fifth in the highest paid Premier League managers and that only Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Brendan Rodgers and Marcelo Bielsa earn greater pay.

But Solskjaer's job is not thought to be in jeopardy, despite the fears over his long term future.

He has taken charge of training this week at Carrington as they prepare for a crunch trip on Saturday to Tottenham Hotspur.

United top chiefs have including Ed Woodward, Avram and Joel Glazer have backed Solskjaer. Despite boasting stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, the Red Devils continue to struggle this term. Ferguson has been a champion of the former striker and his management of the club. Solskjaer took training this week and will be in charge for his side's trip to Tottenham Hotspur

The Norwegian took charge in December 2018, but despite making slight progress has still yet to win a trophy at Old Trafford and it has left some members of his squad doubting his ability to take the club further.

Sportsmail understands that United — who gave Solskjaer a new three-year contract over the summer — were planning to review the 48-year-old’s position in December.

The galling surrender at Old Trafford last weekend has, however, accelerated that process. Board-level talks between co-chairman Joel Glazer, Ed Woodward and managing director Richard Arnold took place on Monday.

Sir Alex Ferguson and former chairman Martin Edwards visited Carrington on Tuesday afternoon, with United insisting the pair were attending a pre-planned commitment.

Ferguson has been a champion of his former striker and there has always been reticence to change at the top when United have fallen on troubling spells of form in previous campaigns.

Yet Solskjaer now faces three huge games — Tottenham, a Champions League clash at Atalanta and then the derby against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City — that look likely to determine his prospects.

Glazer, based in Florida, has been watching developments with interest but senior United sources were adamant last night that no approaches for potential successors had been made after Antonio Conte, the former Chelsea boss, expressed an interest in a move.

Default Re: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ~ 20Legend

Andrew Cole hits out at 'not nice' criticism Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has faced from some Manchester United fans and claims the 'flak' the under-fire Norwegian has faced at Old Trafford this season 'does not sit well with me'

* Andrew Cole has hit out at the Man United fans slamming Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* The Norwegian boss is under pressure at Old Trafford after some poor form
* Cole claims some of the 'flak' his former team-mate has faced is 'not nice'
* Solskjaer has also been criticised by other ex-team-mates such as Rio Ferdinand

Andrew Cole has slammed the criticism that Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has faced from his own supporters, claiming he is 'disappointed' by sections of the Red Devils fanbase.

The Norwegian manager has faced major critics from his own supporters after a mixed set of results to start this season, with a 5-0 home loss to Liverpool and an Old Trafford beating by Manchester City not helping his cause.

Former striker Cole, who played alongside Solskjaer under Sir Alex Ferguson for the the Red Devils, believes no manager deserves the 'flak' the United boss has faced in recent weeks as it 'doesn't sit well with me'.

Andrew Cole (left) says the criticism Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (right) has faced from Manchester United fans is 'not nice'. Solskjaer is under pressure at Old Trafford after home losses to Liverpool and Manchester City

'The flak that Ole gets disappoints me,' Cole told Sky Sports News. 'I don't think any manager should take that kind of flak; whether it's United or non-league.

'I think they are trying to work to the best of their ability. He's trying like everybody else who tried previously. Whether he is my ex-team-mate or not, even if it was someone I didn't know, I wouldn't like people to talk about them like that.

'But I don't like it because when I played with him I got on very well with him. To see him in this position now doesn't sit well with me.

'We all want Manchester United to be back where they were, but that takes time. We can talk about "how much longer?" But the previous managers have found themselves in the same position. The stick that Ole takes is, at times, not nice.'

Solskjaer still has not won a trophy in his three years as United manager, with the club's last major trophy being the 2017 Europa League title won in Jose Mourinho's first season in charge.

In terms of the Premier League, David Moyes, Mourinho and Louis van Gaal all tried to restore the Ferguson days in their attempts to win the title, but none of the four have managed to get the club closer to Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City at the top.

Solskjaer has taken United to multiple semi-finals and even last May's Europa League final against Villarreal, but the Red Devils have come up short on the biggest stage.

Earlier this season, Gary Neville - who also played under Solskjaer for Ferguson's United - took a similar stance to Cole in saying that he will never call out his former team-mate or demand that he be sacked at Old Trafford.

Gary Neville has continued to stand by Solskjaer despite United's stuttering form this season

After United's 5-0 loss to Liverpool in October, Neville said: 'He (Solskjaer) should be under massive pressure with the squad that has been assembled and the fact he's been in the job now for two-and-a-half, three years. 100 per cent.

'But the club are not going to change him. The club are going to stick with him until the end of the season. I've got Manchester United fans on my social media all of the time saying, "Gary, he's your mate. You won't call him out." No, I won't.

'It's never going to happen. He's a club legend. He's my team-mate. I actually like him a lot. Manchester United have failed with two previous managers who have been world class. I think they persist until the end of the season.

'If he does win the Europa League, the FA Cup and they finish in the top four, I would still say that's building a successful team.'

Rio Ferdinand (left) believes now might be the time for Solskjaer (right) to move on as boss

Another of Solskjaer's former team-mate at United, Rio Ferdinand, has been less forgiving about the Norwegian's job security, claiming now is the time to 'hand over the baton' to another manager for the Old Trafford hotseat.

'I don't see any philosophy or identity in the Man United way of playing whatever that should be from the management,' Ferdinand told VIBE with Five last week. 'I sit here looking confused at the team.

'I was always deep down a bit sceptical, could he take us on to be champions? I wasn't fully convinced – I wasn't sure he could do that.

'But the showing with the squad that he accumulated, to the beginning of this season – and what I've seen this season – I just feel it might be about the time now for the baton to be handed over to somebody else who can take us on now.'
