Paul Scholes Kenang Dua Pemain MU yang Jadi 'Bencana'



Manchester - Paul Scholes bernostalgia soal masa-masa indahnya di Manchester United. Tapi tidak semuanya indah, kadang ada juga 'bencana' ketika main sama dua pemain ini.

Paul Scholes merupakan salah satu legenda Manchester United, Scholes adalah jebolan akademi MU yang bertransformasi jadi jendral lini tengah.

Scholes bermain di tahun 1994 sampai 2011. Sempat career break, Scholes lanjut lagi main di tahun 2012 sampai 2013 yang selanjutnya pensiun.

Paul Scholes mencatatkan 714 penampilan bersama Manchester United dengan torehan 153 gol dan 75 assist. Total 27 trofi dipersembahkannya, termasuk 11 kali juara Liga Inggris dan dua kali juara Liga Champions.

Scholes pernah berduet dengan beberapa pemain top seperti Roy Keane, Nicky Butt, dan Michael Carrick. Hanya ada dua nama yang disebutnya jadi bencana!

"Saya suka bermain dengan Butt, Keane, dan Carrick. Saya membutuhkan pemain yang mampu membunuh lawan dan memainkan posisinya dengan baik," jelasnya dilansir dari Sky Sports.

Scholes bermain lebih ke depan, sementara tiga nama itu bertugas sebagai gelandang bertahan. Sayangnya, ada dua pemain yang tidak cocok dengan Scholes.

"Ketika bermain dengan Veron, itu bencana," tegasnya.

Juan Sebastian Veron memperkuat Manchester United di tahun 2001 setelah dibeli dari Lazio. Cuma bertahan selama dua tahun, pemain asal Argentina itu dijual ke Chelsea.

Dinilai, Paul Scholes tidak cocok berduet dengan Veron di tengah. Sebab keduanya adalah tipe gelandang yang maju ke depan, apalagi Veron tidak sanggup beradaptasi dengan baik pada permainan keras dan cepat Liga Inggris.

Satu lagi pemain yang tidak cocok dengan Scholes adalah Anderson!

"Saya rasa, saya cuma sekali bermain bareng Anderson. Itu tidak berhasil," cetusnya.

"Dua pemain itu tidak peduli dengan pertahanan, tidak tahu posisi bertahan dengan baik," tutupnya.

Paul Scholes has admitted playing alongside Argentina international Juan Sebastian Veron at Manchester United was ‘a disaster’.

The former England midfielder won 11 Premier League titles, three FA Cups and two Champions League trophies between the years of 1993 and 2013 at Old Trafford.

The 47-year-old, who is regarded as a United great, revealed that he did find it difficult when he was not paired with a defensively minded midfielder, with Veron and Anderson named as two players he struggled to play alongside.

Veron joined United in a £28.1 million move from Lazio in 2001, at the time it was the most expensive transfer in English football in history, but he only lasted just two seasons at Old Trafford before he was sold at a significant loss to Chelsea.

Scholes much preferred lining up alongside the likes of Nicky Butt, Roy Keane and Michael Carrick over the years.

‘It didn’t really matter to me,' Scholes told his former United team-mate Gary Neville on The Overlap.

‘I played with Nicky [Butt], I played with Roy [Keane] – Michael Carrick. I loved playing with all of them. It wasn’t great playing with people who [were] attacking people, I needed someone who played that [defensive] position really well.’

Neville then asked: ‘Someone like Veron, you mean?’

Scholes replied: ‘Yeah, me and Veron were a disaster.

‘I think me and Anderson did it once. Just, no, it’s not working, is it? Just two lads who don’t care about defending, don’t know the [defensive] position that well.

‘But it worked better with a Michael or a Roy or a Nicky. They were brilliant playing that position, they knew.

‘I didn’t know the position that well, I didn’t play in the position that well, as you know.

'You were always moaning about, ‘stay with your runners’ and stuff. [I’d reply] ‘You get them! He’s running to you, you can see them, can’t you?’ I had to play with someone who was disciplined.’

Veron continued to have a great career after leaving England, winning four trophies at Inter Milan - including another Serie A title - and the Copa Liberatores with Estudiantes.

He continued to play for Argentina until 2010, earning 72 senior caps.

Paul Scholes slams Man United for spending £73m on 'unproven' Jadon Sancho and questions logic of buying Raphael Varane, as he takes aim at transfers - and players who 'took the p***' last season

Paul Scholes has taken a a swipe at Manchester United's recruitment of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, accusing bosses of setting Erik ten Hag up to take the 'blame' if they don't work out.

The former Manchester United midfielder has spoken previously of his irritation at the way the club is run off the pitch and how they handle recruitment.

United spent more than £211million this summer on six signings, including winger Antony, midfielder Casemiro and centre back Lisandro Martinez.

But Scholes, who has addressed United's model speaking on The Overlap, in partnership with Sky Bet, has been less-than-impressed at decision-making on Sancho and Varane, two players signed before Ten Hag took over as boss.

'Jadon Sancho was a young player who Manchester United spent a lot of money on, who was unproven in the league. And why would a club like Real Madrid let Varane go?' Scholes moaned.

'If you looked at him last season, he didn't look right. I didn't think it was a great transfer window. Nobody at the club is taking responsibility for it.'

Sancho made the move from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 but managed just five goals from 38 appearances last season. He finished the campaign with just three assists.

The England winger has three goals from the opening eight matches of 2022-23 but is yet to register an assist.

Varane has become a key selection for Ten Hag and he is keeping England's Harry Maguire out the team as he partners Martinez.

Sancho and Varane arrived under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Scholes conceded that it was 'tough' to watch his former side at the end under his old team-mate.

'He was trying,' he said. 'But it looked from the outside as if players were taking the p**s a little bit really, doing what they want, they were going on to the football pitch and in their own world, doing what they wanted to do rather than what was expected of them or what the manager wanted them to do. And performances just went.'

Scholes also remains unconvinced by the signing of 30-year-old defensive midfielder Casemiro, a player he believes may not have been a Ten Hag selection.

'This year, Casemiro was done over two days,' Scholes continued. 'I wonder if it was the manager's signing. A lot of money, a long contract. I think they need to put someone in charge of recruitment. Eventually, the manager will get blamed for it.'

United made a nightmare start to life under Ten Hag with back-to-back defeats against Brighton and then Brentford.

The 4-0 mauling by Brentford exposed many of United's shortcomings and that performance pushed Ten Hag to tweak to a more direct style of play, something Scholes was pleased to see.

'After the Brentford game, he realised he didn't have the players to play that way, he knew he had to go more direct,' the ex-United midfielder continued.

'Varane, great a player as he's been, is not a great footballer. David De Gea is not a great footballer.

'So, play to your strengths, which for United is the attacking players, and you have to admire the new manager for playing that way. I've been encouraged with what I've seen so far by Ten Hag. He's changed a lot since the Brentford game.

'The simple thing was, don't play out from the back. Get the ball forward to your best players. Get Christian Eriksen into centre midfield, a player who can get balls to the forward players.'

Paul Scholes has slammed Manchester United wingers Jadon Sancho and Antony after their 6-3 derby loss at the Etihad.

The former United midfielder made a sly dig at Sancho and Antony in a post on Instagram. Accompanied by a picture of Ryan Giggs and David Beckham, Scholes wrote: 'Anyone remember when wingers used to help their full-backs?'

Erik ten Hag's men were ripped apart by their fierce local rivals after hat-tricks from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden saw Pep Guardiola's Man City run riot on Sunday afternoon.

Scholes appeared to suggest that Sancho and Antony abandoned United's full-backs Diogo Dalot and Tyrell Malacia, who were left exposed as City tore the Red Devils apart.

City romped into a 4-0 lead at half-time after two goals each from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden, with a lot of the home side's attacks coming down the flanks.

Dalot and Malacia had both received a yellow card by the 25th minute as City's breathtaking front-line ran United's defence ragged.

Beckham and Giggs were known for their qualities in the attacking third but also supported their respective full-backs, Gary Neville and Denis Irwin, during Scholes' time at United.

Dalot at one point during the match was seen remonstrating with Brazilian winger Antony, the £80million summer arrival from Ajax who scored the first of United's three consolation goals against City.

Malacia, another summer signing under Ten Hag, was hooked at half-time in favour of Luke Shaw.

Roy Keane, who played alongside Scholes at United, was left seething by the display in his post-match analysis of the game.

He said: 'From the players' point of view, they really should be embarrassed. You can't go in at half-time in a derby game 4-0 down, it's hugely embarrassing.

'As brilliant as City were, United were desperate. Particularly in midfield. Defensively all over the shop. Even the consolations, they scored a few goals but the game was over, City had switched off.'

Neville was also scathing about United's performance. 'The Manchester United players have bottled it, there is no doubt,' he said on Sky Sports.

'They have not handled this derby at all. I expected so much more.


Scholes played with hard-working wide players like Beckham and Giggs during his time at Old Trafford . Full-back Malacia endured a tough time up against City's prolific front-line and was hooked at half-time

'There has been no composure. They have never settled. They have been anxious and nervous on the ball and pulled apart by an outstanding team.'

Haaland has now scored three consecutive home hat-tricks, the first player to do this in Premier League history.

As a result of his own hat-trick, Foden made history as he reached 50 goals under Pep Guardiola at an even younger age than Lionel Messi did it at Barcelona.

The Norwegian forward is also the first City player to score a hat-trick against United since Francis Lee in December 1970 and the third overall after Horace Barnes in 1921.

United will need to regroup before a Europa League visit to Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus on Thursday, before they face Frank Lampard's Everton on Sunday.
