Why the return of the yellow ball could be good news for Mohamed Salah and Manchester United… Liverpool star averages a goal a game with it and Red Devils pick up 2.2 points per match

* Mohamed Salah and Jose Mourinho have faced scrutiny so far this season
* But with the winter ball being used this weekend, things could be set to change
* Liverpool talisman Salah averages a goal each game he plays with the yellow ball
* Manchester United have won more points with that ball than any other team

Both Mohamed Salah and Manchester United have both endured underwhelming starts to the season, albeit in varying degrees.

For Salah, two goals in Liverpool's 4-0 win over Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday went a long way to eradicating claims he has began the season out of form after finishing the last campaign on 44 goals.

At United, manager Jose Mourinho is under intensifying pressure with the club languishing 10th in the Premier League and seven points off the top four.

Mohamed Salah averages a goal-a-game in English football when the yellow ball is used . The yellow winter ball is returning to use in the Premier League this weekend

Salah is the biggest dangerman in the Premier League once the white ball is swapped

But for Salah and Mourinho particularly, there is reason to think that winter will bring an upturn in form - starting this weekend when the Premier League switches from its white ball to a yellow one.

Liverpool's striker is, according to research carried out by bettingexpert.com, at his most clinical when yellow ball is in play.

He averages more goals than any other player in Premier League history since it was introduced in 2004-05 with a goal per game.

Harry Kane is second with 0.84 per match and Thierry Henry third on 0.71.

United have taken more points with the winter ball than any of the other Premier League teams

And as for Mourinho, United average more points per game with the yellow ball than any of the 20 sides in the Premier League.

United's average of 2.2 per game eclipse second-place Chelsea, who have 2.04 and Arsenal, who have 1.85.

Salah's Liverpool are fourth with 1.82 per game.

PREMIER LEAGUE CLUBS AGREE TO VAR FOR NEXT SEASON

Premier League clubs have agreed in principle to introduce Video Assistant Referees (VAR) from next season.

The endorsement comes seven months after the clubs voted against introducing it for league games in the current 2018/19 season, preferring it to be trialled in FA Cup and Carabao Cup matches and tested further behind the scenes.

VAR is already in place in the Bundesliga in Germany and Serie A in Italy, and was used during the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia. It made its debut in English football in an FA Cup tie between Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace back in January.

HAS IT BEEN USED IN UNITED GAMES?

The technology has been utilised in four Reds matches to date – including, most recently, our Carabao Cup tie against Derby County at Old Trafford back in September.

It caused controversy during the FA Cup fifth-round tie at Huddersfield Town last season when a Juan Mata goal was contentiously chalked off by the VAR for offside following a lengthy delay, but it mattered little in the end as United went on to win 2-0.

VAR was also deployed in United’s 2-0 FA Cup quarter-final victory over Brighton at Old Trafford and the 1-0 defeat by Chelsea in the final of the same competition at Wembley last term.

HOW DID WE GET HERE?

The decision follows a meeting of shareholders today (Thursday) when clubs were given an update on the non-live VAR trials, which are being undertaken this season by the league in conjunction with Professional Game Match Officials (PGMOL) – the body responsible for match officials.

Key learnings from VAR’s use in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, as well as in other leagues across the world including Germany and Italy, were discussed in detail during the meeting.

The Premier League’s non-live testing programme will remain in place for the remainder of the 2018/19 campaign, with a continued emphasis on Saturday afternoons when several matches are being played concurrently and developing a clear protocol for communicating VAR decisions to fans.

The league will now formally make a request to the International Football Association Board and FIFA to use VAR next season.

WHAT IS VAR?

The aim of the system is to produce more accurate decisions, more often, and at the most important points in matches.

It involves the match referee on the field making the same calls as they would without the system in place. However, the VAR – which is a current or former top-level referee – is in place to check decisions on four key incidents:

- Goals, including 'missed' attacking offences in the build-up
- Penalties awarded and not awarded, including 'missed' attacking offences in the build-up
- Direct red cards
- Cases of mistaken identity where the wrong player is shown a red or yellow card

The referee can accept the information relayed through his earpiece by the VAR team, an option usually reserved for objective calls of fact such as if a player is offside. Or, for more subjective decisions such as red cards and penalty-box fouls, he can review the footage on a pitch-side television monitor before deciding whether to change his initial call.

The VAR team will also proactively contact the referee if they spot “a clear and obvious error” around these four types of incident or a “serious missed incident” - usually off-the-ball violence.

Get ready for video replays! VAR to be introduced in the Premier League for start of 2019-20 season after being voted in by clubs during meeting

* Video assistant referees will be used in the Premier League from next season
* The 20 clubs voted in favour of the move at a shareholders' meeting on Thursday
* International Football Association Board and FIFA must give their approval
* VAR will be used for goals, penalty decisions, red cards and mistaken identity

Video assistant referees will be used in the Premier League next season after being voted in by clubs at a meeting on Thursday.

England's top-flight held off introducing VAR this season, even though it has been used in other top leagues, including Spain, and by FIFA at the World Cup.

However, the Premier League's 20 clubs have now decided to introduce VAR from the start of the 2019-20 campaign, pending approval from the International Football Association Board and FIFA.

The Premier League will work on a way of communicating VAR decisions to supporters

In a statement on their website, the Premier League said: 'Premier League clubs have agreed in principle to introduce video assistant referees (VAR) to the competition in the 2019-20 season.

'At a shareholders' meeting today, clubs were provided with an update on the non-live VAR trials being undertaken by the League and Professional Game Match Officials (PGMOL) this season.

'Key learnings from VAR's use in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, and other leagues across the world, were discussed in detail.

Quote:
WHEN WILL VAR BE USED?

GOALS

VAR will be used to help referees decide if an infringement - for example a foul or offside - should mean a goal is not awarded. The Premier League already use goal-line technology to decide if the ball has crossed the line.

PENALTY DECISIONS

VAR will be used to ensure no 'clearly wrong' decisions are made by referees when it comes to awarding a penalty or turning down an appeal.

DIRECT RED CARD INCIDENTS

As with penalty decisions, VAR is there to ensure that direct red cards are only dished out when the player involved is fully deserving of the punishment.

MISTAKEN IDENTITY

VAR will check that cards are given to the guilty players and help the referee identify culprits if he is unsure who committed an offence.

THE VAR PROCESS

1. INCIDENT OCCURS

Either the referee informs the VAR or the VAR recommends to the referee that a decision or incident should be reviewed.

2. REVIEW AND ADVICE BY THE VAR

The video football is reviewed from multiple angles by the VAR, who advises the referee via headset what the video shows.

3. DECISION OR ACTION TAKEN

The referee can decided to review video footage himself at the side of the field of play before taking the appropriate action, or the referee accepts the advice from the VAR and makes the decision.
'The Premier League's non-live testing programme will remain in place for the rest of this season, with a continued emphasis on those Saturday afternoons which have several matches being played concurrently, and developing a clear protocol for communicating VAR decisions to fans.

'The League will now formally make a request to the International Football Association Board and FIFA to use VAR next season.'

The decision comes after contentious refereeing decisions overshadowed a 1-1 league draw between Southampton and Watford last weekend.

Southampton striker Charlie Austin demanded the introduction of VAR after his goal was disallowed by referee Simon Hooper, who deemed Maya Yoshida to have interfered with the ball from an offside position.

PREMIER LEAGUE ISSUES A MESSAGE TO SUPPORTERS

The Premier League has released the following messages to supporters across the English top flight...

“Some brilliant football has been played this Premier League season and the vast majority of fans have generated exciting and passionate atmospheres in stadiums.

”However, there have been incidents recently where a very small minority have behaved unacceptably.

“As we head into the festive season, with matches coming thick and fast, we ask all supporters to get behind their teams in passionate, positive and respectful ways. Support for a club should never include excessive aggression or discrimination towards the opposition.

”If anyone at a Premier League match witnesses unacceptable behaviour please report it to a steward, or submit details on the Kick It Out reporting app or website via this link: Kick It Out reporting form.

“Enjoy the football this weekend, and for the rest of the season, and thank you for your continued support of our clubs.”

Ed Woodward joins hunt to find new Premier League chief as Chelsea chair Bruce Buck calls for help in identifying replacement for Richard Scudamore

* Ed Woodward will lend his services and help to find a new Premier League chief
* Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck is leading, and has also asked Steve Parish to help
* The Premier League had initially hoped Susanna Dinnage would take over
* After accepting the position, Dinnage later decided to turn down the offer

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck has drafted in Steve Parish and Ed Woodward to help him find a new Premier League chief executive after becoming frustrated by the recruitment process.

Animal Planet’s global head Susanna Dinnage and BBC Studios boss Tim Davie have already turned down the role.

And Buck, who is head of the nominations panel, provided Premier League shareholders with an update on the search on Thursday.

Manchester United's Ed Woodward has been drafted in to help find a new Premier League chief

He told them he was frustrated but not embarrassed by the delay in appointing a successor to Richard Scudamore, who quit at the end of last year.

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Woodward is a former accountant and investment banker, while Palace chairman Parish’s background is in computer graphics and advertising.

Recruitment consultants Spencer Stuart are drawing up a new shortlist.

Premier League Umumkan Tanggal Dimulainya Musim 2019/2020
Putra Rusdi Kurniawan - detikSport

Jakarta - Premier League telah merilis tanggal dimulainya musim 2019/2020. Musim depan bergulir 10 Agustus 2019, dua hari setelah bursa transfer musim panas ditutup.

Now City overtake United off the pitch! £2BILLION Manchester City leapfrog rivals to become the most valuable Premier League club

* Man City are now the most valuable club in the Premier League, a study finds
* They leapfrogged rivals Man United by breaking through the £2billion barrier
* The 'Big Six' make up 74 per cent of the the league's cumulative value
* The study also revealed a growing disparity between big and small clubs

Manchester City have become the most valuable Premier League club, climbing above Manchester United and breaking the £2billion barrier, according to academics.

A study found that the League overall dropped in value by 1.6 per cent to £14.7bn, but is still dominated by the 'Big Six' who have a cumulative value of £10.9bn.

Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham make up 74 per cent of the total value — up from 67 per cent last year.

Man City are worth £2billion, making them the most valuable club in the Premier League. The Citizens saw a spike in value of £350,000 which was enough to leapfrog rivals Man United. The Red Devils lost top spot due to increased costs including a 13 per cent rise in wages

And the disparity between those clubs and the rest is highlighted by the fact that there is now almost £1bn separating Arsenal in sixth from Burnley in seventh.

Manchester City's £350,000 spike in value from 2017 to 2018 has been attributed to higher revenue and lower wages by University of Liverpool researchers, who have published their latest Premier League Valuations study.

Kieran Maguire, principal researcher and author of Price of Football, said: 'Critics of Manchester City point out that it is part of a multi-club ownership model and that there are commercial deals with related parties which might not apply should the club be sold. A prospective owner might not be willing to pay this value.'

United relinquished top spot due to increased costs. Wages rose by 13 per cent.
