UEFA confirm Wembley will host 2023 Champions League final 10 years on from hosting Bayern Munich's victory over Borussia Dortmund in 2013

* UEFA have confirmed Wembley will host the Champions League final in 2023
* English national stadium last hosted the final of the competition back in 2013
* St Petersburg will host in 2021 as Munich's Allianz Arena gets 2022 showpiece

UEFA has revealed Wembley has been chosen as the venue for the Champions League final in 2023.

The governing body's president, Aleksander Ceferin, made the announcement after Tuesday's executive committee meeting.

The match will mark 10 years since Wembley last staged the final in 2013, when Bayern Munich defeated German rivals Borussia Dortmund 2-1.

Wembley has been chosen as the host venue for the 2023 Champions League final. Wembley hosted the Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Dortmund in 2013

UEFA has announced three host cities, with St Petersburg awarded the 2021 final and Munich the 2022 showpiece.

Wembley has hosted the final of Europe's premier club competition seven times.

The old stadium hosted European Cup finals in 1963, 1968, 1971, 1978 and 1992, with the modernised venue also staging the 2011 final, which saw Barcelona defeat Manchester United 3-1.

The famous arena has also been chosen to host next summer's Euro 2020 semi-finals and final, with the tournament set to be played out at various venues across Europe.

UEFA have also confirmed that the 2021 Europa League final will be staged at Sevilla's Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium.

Sevilla's ground is a fitting venue given the club's rich history in the competition, with the club winning it on five previous occasions.

UEFA added that VAR will be used from the beginning of the knockout stages in this season's Europa League competition.

The executive committee, meanwhile, will recommend to its 55 national associations and all European clubs not to play matches in countries where women have restricted access to stadiums.

UEFA said its third club competition, starting in 2021 with a view to giving 'more clubs in more countries a chance to participate in European football', will be called the Europa Conference League.

Adidas' official match ball of the Champions League knockout stages is called the ‘Istanbul 20’ and features a hand-drawn MAP of the host city that will stage the final

* Adidas's new ball for the Champions League will be used in the knockout stages
* It'll be used in every match in the run up to the final held at the Ataturk Stadium
* Paris Saint-Germain players trained with the ball on Monday night in Dortmund
* Ball's design features famous Istanbul features such as the Bosporus water way

The road to the Champions League final in Istanbul is starting to become clearer, but just in case some teams lose their way it might be worth they keep an eye on the ball.

Not just from a sporting standpoint but from logistics one too as UEFA have revealed a unique design for the matchball that will be used in year's final.

The ball has been named the 'Istanbul 20', of course marking the year and location of the final, and it features a hand-drawn map of the historic Turkish city that will host the event on May 30 at the Ataturk Stadium.

Adidas have revealed the ball that will be used for the Champions League knockout stages

It will be used in the final too which will be held at Istanbul's Ataturk Stadium

The ball made by adidas will not just be used for the occasion though as it will also feature in every knock-out match on the way to the final starting with Tuesday evening's last-16 games between Atletico Madrid and Liverpool as well as Borussia Dortmund vs Paris Saint-Germain.

The players though have already started to get a feel for the new ball with PSG training at Dortmund's Westfalen Stadion on Monday.

Kylian Mbappe and Neymar were among the stars getting their first few touches as they hope to guide the French champions towards a first leg advantage in Germany.

The ground has rich European history having hosted the famous 2005 final won by Liverpool

The ball though takes inspiration from Istanbul's scenery including the Bosporus waterway

Regarding the ball's finer details UEFA claim it highlights Istanbul’s deep culture of art, the white stars have been placed to contrast with a hand-printed map of the city.

The Bosporus, a natural waterway that flows through the city, is at the centre of the ball. The striking purple colour palette is inspired by the sun setting above the river from east to west.

The ball features adidas’ latest technology they claim will help stars perform at their best.

An outer texture coating offers secure grip and complete control, while the thermally bonded star panels provide a seamless surface for an improved first touch.

UEFA confirm Champions League is on hold INDEFINITELY until further notice amid reports final had been delayed until June 27 due to coronavirus crisis

* UEFA have announced the Champions League has been put on hold indefinitely
* Europa League final in Gdansk has also been put on hold indefinitely by UEFA
* The coronavirus pandemic has decimated the football calendar recently

The Champions League has been put on hold indefinitely, UEFA have confirmed after their coronavirus crisis meetings on Tuesday.

Reports suggested the date of the final had been put back to June 27 as UEFA try to ensure their showpiece club competition reaches a conclusion this summer.

The final is currently scheduled for May 30 in Turkish city Istanbul but the coronavirus outbreak has forced UEFA to suspend their main competitions.

The coronavirus crisis has decimated the global sporting calendar, including domestic, European and international action, and UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin held a series of calls on Tuesday to help chart a course for the future of football.

In a statement published by UEFA after the meetings, it was announced 'all competitions and matches for clubs and national teams for both men and women have been put on hold until further notice'.

The statement added: 'A working group has been set up with the participation of leagues and club representatives to examine calendar solutions that would allow for the completion of the current season and any other consequence of the decisions made today.'

This season's Champions League has been put on hold indefinitely after UEFA's crisis talks

However, Spanish newspaper Marca had claimed that the Champions League final had been put back by four weeks to June 27.

It comes after Euro 2020 was the first European competition to be put back with news emerging on Tuesday that the tournament will be held in the summer of 2021.

A pan-European tournament, with 12 host cities, was ambitious at the outset and in the current climate had appeared almost impossible to achieve.

Getting rid of both international competitions means there should now be breathing space for other club tournaments to take place and finish.

Almost every domestic league in European has been suspended and UEFA are desperate for their competitions to be played out to a conclusion by the end of June.

The Europa League final, due to be played in the Polish city of Gdansk, has also been placed on hold indefinitely and reportedly rescheduled.

Reports claim it will now take place on June 24, instead of May 27 as originally intended.

The format for the remainder of this season's Champions League and Europa League must also be decided.

Proposals to switch all remaining ties from the quarter-finals onwards to a one-off match were discussed in the first conference call of the day involving the clubs and European leagues chaired by UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, as well as a plan to stage the semi-finals and final of both competitions in one city over the course of five days.

The Champions League and Europa League were officially suspended last week.

RB Leipzig, Atalanta, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain had all booked their places in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with the second legs of the matches between Manchester City and Real Madrid, Juventus and Lyon, Barcelona and Napoli and Bayern Munich and Chelsea scrapped.

The first legs of the Europa League last-16 ties were also played but Manchester United, Wolves and Rangers are among the teams whose second legs are yet to be played.

UEFA confirm Champions League will end with World Cup-style mini-tournament in Lisbon... with one-legged ties played behind closed doors and the showpiece final on August 23

* The 2019-20 Champions League will be completed via a mini-tournament
* The venues for the four outstanding last-16 ties will be decided in due course
* From the quarter-finals onwards, the competition will be played out in Lisbon
* Ties in the Portuguese capital will be over one leg, with the final on August 23
* The Europa League will follow a similar style with a mini-tournament in Germany
* The final of the Europa League will be held in Cologne on August 21

UEFA have confirmed plans to finish this season's Champions League with a mini-tournament in Lisbon over 12 days in August.

Europe's premier club competition will complete its 2019-20 edition with a final-eight World Cup-style tournament, held in the Portuguese capital, from August 12 to August 23.

After the four outstanding last-16 ties are completed - and whether they will be completed at the scheduled home stadiums or neutral venues in Portugal is still to be decided - the quarter-finals onwards will be held on neutral territory, with no fans present and, most notably, over just one leg.

The 2019-20 Champions League will be completed via a mini-tournament in Lisbon in August

If the last-16 second legs, scheduled for 7-8 August, cannot be completed at the scheduled home stadiums, Porto and Guimaraes will be added as potential venues for the matches, alongside Lisbon.

As things stand, teams will not have to quarantine either, with each club likely to set up in their own hotel away from the public so that social distancing measures can be maintained.

Meanwhile, the quarter-finals onwards in the Europa League will similarly be played over one leg in four German cities: Cologne, Duisburg, Dusseldorf and Gelsenkirchen between the 10-21 August, with the final in Cologne on August 21.

As with the Champions League, the venues for the remaining last-16 games will be decided in due course - but will be held over the 5-6 August.

Manchester United are set to play in the Europa League mini-tournament held in Germany. Benfica's home stadium, the Estadio da Luz, will host the 2020 Champions League final

UEFA have earmarked August as the month to complete both competitions in order to give Europe's top domestic leagues enough time to finish their respective seasons.

In the Champions League, the 'final eight' tournament will be held over 12 days in Lisbon, with the first match taking place on August 12 and the final being played on August 23.

Instead of playing the quarter-finals over two legs as normal, the new plan will see the ties become single games across four straight days.

The semi-finals, which will also be played over one leg, will take place on August 18 and 19, with the final at the Estadio da Luz four days later.

Istanbul was due to host the 2020 final but will now be the venue for the 2021 showpiece, with all other scheduled hosts moving back a year - meaning St Petersburg will host in 2022, Munich in 2023 and Wembley in 2024.

It was also announced in Wednesday's press conference that the group stage for the 2021-22 Champions League will start on October 20.

The teams already qualified for this season's quarter-finals are France's PSG, Italy's Atalanta, Spain's Atletico Madrid and Germany's RB Leipzig.

The remaining last-16 second-leg fixtures are Manchester City's home tie against Real Madrid, Chelsea's trip to Bayern Munich, Juventus's home game against Lyon and Napoli's visit to Barcelona.

Portugal was picked because of its location and the fact it has no teams left in the competition.

Lisbon emerged as an attractive host city because it has two stadiums with the facilities needed for elite matches - Benfica's Estadio da Luz and Sporting Lisbon's Estadio Jose Alvalade.

In addition, most of the country's coronavirus restrictions are also being lifted this month, with air travel in and out of the country allowed from June 22.

Visitors will not need to go into quarantine on arrival, although additional health and safety measures will be in place in a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Sporting Lisbon's Estadio Jose Alvalade will also host matches for August's mini-tournament. UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin confirmed the summer plans for the Champions League

Organisers are proceeding on the basis that all matches will be played behind closed doors, with only essential personnel allowed on site.

However, UEFA are understood to have left the door open for possible changes should public health conditions in Portugal allow.

If government guidelines are altered in time for ticketing to be organised, there is an outside chance that some fans could be allowed in to watch.

The capacity of both grounds would be greatly reduced in order to comply with social distancing rules and other safety protocols.

UEFA are braced for a loss in income from broadcasters, who will expect sizeable refunds because they will have six fewer games to show as a result of the new format.

'It has been a wake-up call': UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin backs further Black Lives Matter protests as footballers continue to take a knee in European competition

* Manchester United and LASK players took a knee at Old Trafford before kick-off
* Wednesday marked the restart of European competition post-lockdown
* Premier League players have been taking a knee in support of Black Lives Matter
* UEFA boss Aleksander Ceferin says players should keep using their platform

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has backed players to keep taking a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, as European competitions get back underway this week.

The last-16 of the Europa League started on Wednesday, with the Champions League set to restart on Friday.

Manchester United, as has been the case among all Premier League teams, and opponents LASK took a knee before their contest at Old Trafford and Ceferin told The Mirror that UEFA's stance on racism is set to be stronger as a response to the actions of players across Europe.

Manchester United players took a knee before their Europa League clash on Wednesday night. UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has backed players to continue using their platform

'It has been a wake-up call, for society and the wider European football community', Ceferin said.

'It is a reality that billions of fans sometimes pay more attention to football than to their elected political leaders.

'Clubs and players have shown solidarity with society's outpouring of pain, anger and sadness following the tragic death of George Floyd in the United States.'

Since the Premier League re-started on June 17, players have taken a knee before kick-off in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and in opposition to racial inequality and police brutality.

And European football's governing body has responded too, making deputy PFA chief executive Bobby Barnes its first black member on their Disciplinary Panel.

'Athletes from a range of sports have spoken eloquently of a moment of genuine potential for governing bodies to rethink their anti-racism programmes,' Ceferin continued.

'UEFA has always recognised its responsibility, both to address any form of racial bias within European football and take concrete steps to fight the sickening use of racist language against players.'

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng last week urged all players to continue taking a knee, to use their platform in support of the worldwide movement, as UEFA competitions re-started this week in their shortened one-leg format.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE DRAW: Man United face a rough ride against PSG and Leipzig - but Chelsea, Liverpool and City all get lucky with their group stage picks... plus it's the return of Messi v Ronaldo!

* Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will meet in the Champions League groups
* Liverpool face Ajax and Atalanta while Manchester United meet PSG again
* Manchester City are tasked with a trip to Porto as Chelsea prepare for Sevilla
*UEFA confirmed the partial return of fans to grounds for their club competitions

Manchester United were handed a nightmare draw on their return to the Champions League.

And they face a further handicap after UEFA confirmed the partial return of supporters to grounds for their club competitions as well as international matches starting next week, where local laws permit.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were handed the toughest task of the Premier League's four representatives after being placed in the Group of Death with Paris Saint-Germain, RB Leipzig and Istanbul Basaksehir.

Manchester United will once again have to go up against PSG on the European stage

United were in the second pot of eight teams and followed French champions PSG, Champions League runners-up last season, into group B during the draw in Geneva.

Solskjaer's men famously pulled off a dramatic comeback to knock PSG out at the last-16 stage, after losing the first leg 2-0 at home, during their last Champions League campaign in 2018-19, a victory that helped the Norwegian land the permanent job at Old Trafford.

But they will face an uphill task to reach the knockout stages after RB Leipzig, semi-finalists last season and led by highly-rated manager Julian Nagelsmann, were added to the group from pot three and then Champions League debutants and Turkish champions Istanbul Basaksehir, who signed former Manchester United defender Rafael this summer.

Following their trial in the Super Cup between Bayern Munich and Sevilla in Budapest, UEFA are rolling out their reintroduction of fans to stadium.

Only home fans will be able to attend matches with the number allowed in capped at 30 per cent of stadium capacity.

However, plans to allow fans back into sporting events in England from October 1 were pushed back by up to six months.

That will leave United at a disadvantage when they travel to France and Germany, two countries that have allowed supporters back into grounds.

Italy, Holland, Denmark and Russia are among the other countries where fans have returned to grounds.

Portugal's upcoming games against Spain and Sweden will be played in front of supporters while a test event in the Portuguese League is also due to take place this weekend.

Italy, Holland, Portugal, Denmark and Russia will also welcome English clubs in this season's Champions League group stage.

This year's final is in Istanbul at the Ataturk Stadium on May 29 where Liverpool produced their unforgettable comeback from 3-0 down to beat AC Milan on penalties in 2005.

Premier League champions Liverpool were first out in Group D and will face Dutch giants Ajax, high-scoring Italians Atalanta and Danes Midtjylland who qualified for the competition for the first time this week and share an owner with Brentford in Matthew Benham.

popular black boy names

Manchester City, quarter-finalists last year, will launch their latest bid to win the Champions League with Group C games against Portuguese champions Porto, Greek league winners Olympiacos and French runners-up Marseille.

Former Chelsea duo Didier Drogba and Florent Malouda gave their old club a favourable draw, placed the Blues in Group E with Europa League winners Sevilla and two Champions League new boys, Russians Krasnodar and French side Rennes.

The Rennes ties have also set up a quick reunion for Chelsea's new £22m goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, with his old club.

Elsewhere, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel will resume their La Liga rivalry in Europe's biggest competition after Juventus and Barcelona were both placed in Group G.

Ole Gunnar Solskajer faces a tough return, with Manchester United set to face PSG and Leipzig. In early 2019 Solskajer built his United reign on a miraculous comeback victory over PSG

Champions League clubs would be BANNED from signing players from each other under new 'solidarity' plans being discussed by Europe's top clubs which would stop big-money transfers

* The European Clubs' Association chairman raised the idea with journalists
* Andrea Agnelli said options were under discussion for financial fair play
* The move would encourage top clubs to look at lower tiers for new players

European football clubs are considering new rules that would ban Champions League sides from selling each other players.

The extraordinary idea was raised by Andrea Agnelli, the chairman of the European Clubs Association, following the organisation's 25th General Assembly.

Agnelli, who is also the chairman of Juventus, said the scheme could help create a more competitive balance in European football.

Answering a question following the ECA meeting from a German journalist about salary caps, Agnelli talked about finding alternative ways to secure financial fair play, within football.

'Clubs qualifying to specific tiers in international competitions would not be allowed to buy each other's players,' he suggested.

'That would improve indirect solidarity towards other clubs. So, no triple figure transfers among Champions League participating clubs. These are elements we are discussing.'

Champions League teams would not be able to buy each others' players under rules discussed by Europe's top clubs according to Andrea Agnelli of the European Clubs Association

If a ban was already in place it would have precluded some of the biggest transfers in recent history.

Among those deals that would not have been done, would be Neymar's £198million move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, or Kylian Mbappe's transfer from Monaco to PSG for £165m a year later, after a loan spell at the Parc des Princes.

Other transfers that would have fallen foul of the ban would be Paul Pogba's 2016 switch from Juventus to Manchester United for £89m and Antoine Griezmann's 2019 transfer from Atletico Madrid to Barcelona for £108m.

The need to maintain competitive balance in European football has been in sharp focus with negotiations over an enlarged Champions League at an advanced stage, as well as new proposals for a European Super League emerging last year.

Much criticism has been made of the fact that Europe's largest clubs are becoming wealthier and the gap between them and the rest in terms of spending power and ability to attract top talent has grown wider.

Proposals to expand the Champions League from 32 to 36 teams, introduce the so-called Swiss model with 10 matches in the group phase, with protected entry for some of the largest clubs, has heightened fears of the gap becoming even greater.

European Leagues president Lars-Christer Olsson has highlighted competitive balance

The European Leagues, a representative body, which includes the Premier League, has suggested that a supersized Champions League, which could feature an additional 100 matches, would generate more money than the current model, but steal broadcast revenue away from domestic competition.

The European Leagues fear that as a result, those clubs which regularly feature in the Champions League would simply grow ever wealthier and become untouchable.

The idea raised by Agnelli would mean the biggest clubs would have to look for talent from lower tiers, therefore the wealth from the top end of the game would be shared around in transfer fees.

It is not the only idea under consideration. Agnelli said the Covid crisis had placed clubs under financial pressure and looking at creative ways to implement cost control was important.

Meanwhile, Agnelli said that he thought agreement on the reformed Champions League was imminent.

He revealed that the final sticking point was how the four extra spots in the competition, which is expected to increase from 32 to 36 teams from 2024, will be allocated.

The debate is whether those spots should go to champions, or if they should be allocated shared using UEFA rankings based on past success.

'I would truly hope everything would be done in the next couple of weeks,' Agnelli told journalists on Monday, following the 25th General Assembly of the ECA.

'There are details that have to be addressed - one of them being access to the competition. I would say in a couple of weeks it should be pretty much sorted.'

Agnelli said his focus had been to reach agreement on the new Champions League and he had not participated in conversations about the even more controversial European Super League.

The £4.6billion league, which is believed to be driven by Europe's biggest clubs, including, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Manchester United, would create a virtually closed-shop competition of 20 clubs, with 15 founder members having guaranteed participation.

Earlier, UEFA general secretary Giorgio Marchetti, opened the general assembly by blasting the idea of a Super League.

'We realise that unity can easily be dissolved when insidious ideas are pursued under the pretence of survival, growth or business needs,' the Sun reported him as saying.

'Unfortunately, the rest of football, about 99 per cent of it, would not be invited to enjoy this new super union.

'Surviving this affliction is not just about quick fixes or effective remedies that fit the wealthiest and the privileged few but taking care of everybody, the whole of football, the big and the small, the weak and the strong.'

He added: 'Our combined ideas and efforts have produced the greatest revamp in club competition formats in decades.

'The reforms will provide renewed strength and unprecedented excitement going forward.

'With the project we have in mind, Europe's premier club competition post 2024 will be even more compelling and ready to face a new landscape of fans and viewers.'
