Southgate Menyesal Pernah Mengkritik Smalling
Novitasari Dewi Salusi - detikSport

Smalling sendiri kini sedang menjalani masa peminjaman di AS Roma.

Arsenal step up pursuit of Chris Smalling after showing 'willingness to meet £25m valuation' for Manchester United defender on loan at Roma

* Arsenal look set to intensify their efforts for Manchester United's Chris Smalling
* The Gunners have been linked with the experienced defender for several months
* A £25million valuation has been placed on the England international by United
* Roma boss Paulo Fonseca already said he would like his side to keep Smalling

Arsenal are reportedly stepping up their interest in Manchester United's Chris Smalling, and have expressed a willingness to get a deal tied up in the summer.

Mikel Arteta is looking to boost his defensive ranks with experienced stars, and has continued monitoring Smalling's eye-catching performances on loan with Roma in Serie A.

Now the Gunners are ready to intensify their efforts to sign the 30-year-old, who is set to remain in Italy for the rest of the campaign, according to the Express.

Arsenal are reportedly stepping up their interest in Manchester United's Chris Smalling. Mikel Arteta has been pondering how to improve his Arsenal defence in the summer window. Roma coach Paulo Fonseca has already said he would like his side to keep hold of the player

United, aware of the growing interest in Smalling from European clubs, have placed a £25million valuation on the player's head.

Arsenal are now said to be willing to meet the cost, in order to bring Smalling on board in the summer window and kick-start his career once more in the Premier League.

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has also been linked with a move for Smalling, while Everton are also reported to hold an interest.

Roma boss Paulo Fonseca however is hoping to persuade the powers that be in the Italian capital to sign the player permanently.

In February, Fonseca told the Italian media that a move to sign the defender permanently is realistic.

'Is it possible Smalling stays here at Roma? Yes,' said Fonseca.

'He is a very strong player and has had an immediate connection with Italian football.

'He is a great player, very important for us and likes to live in Rome,' he added.

Chris Smalling yet to make decision on his future with Man United defender attracting interest from Arsenal, Everton, Leicester and Spurs after impressive loan spell with Roma

* Chris Smalling will make a decision on his next move over the summer
* Centre-back has impressed during his season on loan with Italian club Roma
* Manchester United defender has been linked with a permanent stay in Italy
* And a quartet of Premier League clubs have been credited with interest in him

Chris Smalling is still to discuss his next move and will make a decision in the summer.

The Manchester United centre back has enjoyed an impressive season out on loan at Roma and even played himself into a potential recall for England.

His performances have prompted constant links with a permanent move to Roma while Arsenal, Everton, Leicester and Tottenham have been credited with interest in England.

However, the 30-year old has yet to hear from any club and is concentrating on finishing the season in Italy once Serie A resumes after the coronavirus lockdown.

Smalling, who has two years left on contract at United plus a one year option, could even make a comeback at Old Trafford depending on talks with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the summer.

The Greenwich-born defender and his wife Sam have thoroughly enjoyed their spell in Italy where they have been welcomed by locals while his displays have made him a firm favourite with Roma fans.

Chris Smalling will make a decision on his Manchester United future in the summer after an impressive loan spell with Roma attracted interest from a number of clubs. The centre-back has performed well during his loan with Roma from Manchester United. Smalling has two years remaining on his United contract plus the option for a further year

He has remained in Rome during the coronavirus lockdown and hopes to finish the campaign on a high once it resumes. Roma, like United, made the last 16 of the Europa League and stand fifth in the Serie A table.

United may yet add another centre back in the summer as they consider Smalling's future and that of Phil Jones.

Marcos Rojo is keen to resolve his future too once his loan ends with Estudiantes.

There have been question marks over Victor Lindelof at stages this season while Axel Tuanzebe has struggled with injury. Eric Bailly though has made a promising return following his lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Roma 'make fresh bid to extend Chris Smalling's loan for another season... with Serie A club offering £13m option-to-buy deal for Manchester United centre-back'

* Chris Smalling has played 32 times for Roma during an impressive loan spell
* The Serie A club are giving serious consideration to keeping the 30-year-old
* Roma have reportedly offered Man United a £2.5m loan fee for next season
* Smalling is due to leave Roma after the Serie A season finishes on August 2

Roma have reportedly made a new bid to Manchester United for the services of Chris Smalling, with a loan deal again favoured by the Serie A club.

Centre-back Smalling has impressed for Roma, making 32 appearances in all competitions this season, but is set to return to Old Trafford after Serie A concludes on August 2.

As a result, Roma are looking at an option to take the 30-year-old for another year on loan with an option to buy for £13m (€15m) at the end of next season, according to Football Italia.

The report details that club adviser Franco Baldini has offered a loan fee of £2.5m (€3m) to United for Smalling's loan next season.

Chris Smalling has impressed on loan for Roma, who are looking for another season-long-loan. The Serie A club have offered Manchester United a £13m option-to-buy deal for next season. The 30-year-old defender has been under contract at Manchester United for ten years

A four-year contract would also be offered to the former England international, should the move be made permanent at the end of the 2020-21 season.

United, however, are holding out for a permanent fee to closer to the £22m (€25m) mark for a player who has been on their books for ten years now.

As it stands too, United would not give permission for Smalling to stay for the remainder of Roma's Europa League campaign in mid-August.

Roma have their last-16 encounter against Sevilla on August 5, with the tie taking place over just one leg.

Smalling moved to Old Trafford from Fulham in 2010, after originally making his mark for non-League Maidstone United.

Formerly a regular with the national team, with 31 caps to his name, Smalling has been rejuvenated by his move to Italy, with England boss Gareth Southgate travelling over to take a look at a player he did not select for his 2018 World Cup squad.

Currently, Smalling has a thigh injury and is not expected back to full fitness for at least another week as Roma look to consolidate European football for next season - they're currently fifth in the table.

Roma 'struggling to meet Manchester United's £18m asking price for Chris Smalling - they're £2m short - with Juventus, Napoli and Inter Milan all ready to swoop in for defender'

* Roma are struggling to finalise a deal with Manchester United for Chris Smalling
* United want £18.2million for the defender whilst Roma want to pay £16.3m
* Juventus, Napoli and Inter Milan are all waiting to swoop in if deal can't be made

Roma are struggling to meet Manchester United's valuation of centre-back Chris Smalling after a successful loan spell with the Serie A side.

United want £18.2million for the 30-year-old defender, however, Roma are standing firm and have said they will not spend more than £16.3m for the England international.

Juventus, Napoli and Inter Milan are all monitoring the situation in order to swoop in and sign Smalling if Roma fail to do so, according to Calcio Mercato.

It is believed that the defender and his family have settled into life well in the Italian capital and wish to move to the area on a more permanent basis.

Roma are reportedly trying to leverage Smalling's desire to leave United for them as a tool to lower the asking price to their more desired €18m.

He has impressed during his loan spell with the club, making 28 league appearances and scoring two goals along with two assists.

Roma still have two league matches to play against Torino and Juventus before they continue their Europa League campaign with their last-16 tie with Sevilla.

Meanwhile, a host of Serie A giants are patiently waiting as they all hope to bolster their defence during the transfer window.

Juventus veteran Giorgio Chiellini will turn 36 in August, as the Serie A champions will look for a wise head to replace the club legend.

Napoli will be fending off offers for Kalidou Koulibaily and could view Smalling as a replacement should they lose the Senegalese centre-back.

Roma 'give up on Chris Smalling after Manchester United reject their final offer on Sunday' with the Old Trafford club 'holding out for a bid of over £18m' before selling the defender

* Chris Smalling has reportedly played his last game on loan at Roma
* Italian side have failed to agree transfer fee with parent club Manchester United
* Smalling now expected to head back to United, who he joined 10 years ago
* However, he is unlikely to have a first-team future under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Chris Smalling is set to head back to Manchester United after Roma were unable to negotiate a fee with his parent club over a permanent deal.

The former England defender has spent the season on loan in the Italian capital, with the Serie A side having paid a £2.7million loan fee last summer.

But according to Sky Sport Italia, an increased bid from Roma has still not met the Premier League side's valuation of £18m and they will 'give up' hopes of keeping him, with the centre-back likely head back to Old Trafford having played his last game for the club.

Smalling has otherwise impressed at Roma this term where he has featured 37 times in all competitions, netting three goals.

The 30-year-old is poised to return to the club he joined ten years ago from Fulham but he is unlikely to feature again under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The United boss prefers other defensive options at Old Trafford, and it leaves Smalling's surplus to requirements despite still having two years left on his current deal.

Smalling helped Paulo Fonseca's side to a fifth place finish in Serie A but is not expected to feature in the remainder of their Europa League campaign as Roma attempt to secure Champions League football for next term.

They will face Sevilla on Thursday in the last-16 in Germany.

Looking ahead to next season, the Italian outfit could now attempt to lure Jan Vertonghen to the club following his release form Tottenham Hotspur after eight years.

Chris Smalling admits he is 'gutted' to be leaving Roma now after the Italians failed to reach agreement with Europa League rivals Manchester United to extend his loan deal until the end of the competition

* Chris Smalling will return to Manchester United after a year on loan at Roma
* The Italians were unable to meet Man United's £18m valuation of the defender
* The centre-half returns to Old Trafford with two years to run on his deal

Chris Smalling has revealed he is 'gutted' that he will be unable to complete the season with Roma after Manchester United failed to grant him a loan extension.

The Italian side are back in Europa League action on Thursday when they take on Sevilla in the last-16.

But their initial loan agreement with United for the defender means he will be unable to feature in their European campaign this month following its expiry at the end of the Serie A season last Sunday.

Chris Smalling will return to Manchester United despite a successful loan spell at Roma

Smalling showed his frustration at not being able to complete the campaign with the Italian club where he has enjoyed a productive year away from Old Trafford.

He said: 'I’m gutted that I can’t finish what we started this season. To experience the love shown to me in such a short time was extra special and it will not be forgotten.

'I want to thank and wish all the players and staff the best of luck against Sevilla. DAJE ROMA!'

United are also in the Europa League, and with a 5-0 first leg lead over LASK have one foot in the quarter-finals.

They will face the winner of Roma and Sevilla in the last-eight and will be wary that extending Smalling's stay in the Italian capital means they could come up against the defender in the next round.

There are no rules from UEFA that prohibit players playing against their parent clubs in European competition.

Smalling has impressed at Roma where he has featured 37 times in all competitions, netting three goals.

The Italian side finished fifth in Serie A but have been unable to match United's £18million valuation to make Smalling's stay a permanent one.

The 30-year-old is now set to return to Old Trafford where he has two years remaining on his contract, but he is unlikely to feature in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans who will remain keen on moving him on this summer.

Looking ahead to next season, the Italian outfit could now attempt to snap up Jan Vertonghen following his release form Tottenham after eight years at White Hart Lane.

'He has shown this season that he will be valuable': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Chris Smalling DOES have a future at Manchester United after returning from Roma loan and reveals Luke Shaw will be fit for the start of next season after picking up an injury

* Chris Smalling has impressed during his season on loan in Italy with Roma
* He has been unable to extend his loan to play in the Europa League this month
* But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested he may yet have a future at United
* The United boss believes Smalling could bring 'valuable' experience to the team

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted that Chris Smalling does have a future with Manchester United after an impressive season on loan at Roma.

The centre-back, 30, was allowed by Solskjaer to make the move to Serie A at the beginning of the season and has enhanced his reputation with a series of good performances.

Smalling had hoped to round off his season with Roma by playing for them in the Europa League but an extension to his loan has not been reached and he is no longer with the Italian capital outfit.

The defender said he was 'gutted' that he 'can't finish what we started this season' as the Serie A side prepared to face Sevilla but Solskjaer is ready to welcome him back to Old Trafford.

'I think Chris has shown over his career at Man United how valuable he is for Man United,' the Norwegian said.

'This season was about him being a regular, going to Roma, showing and proving how good a centre-back he is.

'I wanted to give Harry (Maguire), Vic (Victor Lindelof), maybe Axel (Tuanzebe) a chance, so we found out that was the best for him to go to Roma, play for a year.

'Now he's coming back and Chris has shown this season that he will be valuable.

'I've been speaking to Chris throughout and been delighted with his season.'

By contrast, Alexis Sanchez has got the green light from United to feature in the Europa League.

The forward has been an unmitigated flop at Old Trafford and discussions over a permanent exit continue having been given the go-ahead to feature for Inter Milan against Getafe on Wednesday.

United have named a 30-strong squad for their remaining matches, with Tuanzebe and Shaw omitted due to season-ending injuries.

'Axel started to get niggles early on when we restarted and he had to have an operation in his foot, so he'll be back early-September-ish,' Solskjaer said.

'Same with Luke. It's the same injury as against Southampton and he'll be ready again early September.

'They both should be ready for when the league starts.'
