Manchester United dream team -
no place in squad for Giggs, Ronaldo, Stam, Scholes or Keane

belfasttelegraph.co.uk, Chosen by Jimmy Leach - 12 July 2009

They may be the World, European and English champions but just one of the current crop make it into the Manchester United dream team.

There is no room for Giggs, Ronaldo, Stam, Scholes or Keane - testament to the quality that has passed through Old Trafford over the years.

PETER SCHMEICHEL Goalkeeper
Manchester United, 1991-199, 292 appearances United have a patchy record with goalkeepers for some reason and for every Harry Gregg or Edwin van der Saar, there's been a Chris Turner or a Gary Bailey. Not dreadful (Taibi) but not always top notch. Schmeichel tops them all. Physically intimidating, his athleticism could be astonishing, his willingness to improvise equally so - as his dignity-shredding star-jump saves would attest. Life threatening to defenders as well as opposing strikers, he was clearly barking, but unarguably the best goalie the Premiership has seen.

GARY NEVILLE Right back
Manchester United, 1992-present, 376 appearances, 5 goals Yes, Gary Neville. The Scouse-baiting barrack-room lawyer. The man who can't grow a beard. He's never been one of United's most popular players, but as England's most-capped right-back and a career which virtually spans United's most glorious years, he may just be a better player than many give him credit for. An astute defender, he forged an impressive partnership down the right wing for club and country with David Beckham, but after Beckham left for Madrid, Neville worked harder and became the most consistent crosser of a ball in the side.

MARTIN BUCHAN Centre back
Manchester United, 1972-83, 456 appearances, 4 goals No Ferdinand? Stam? Foulkes? Buchan is perhaps the hardest to justify but he oozed class and vision in some rather patchy United sides - suffering relegation in 1973 and winning the FA Cup in 1977. A smooth operator and disciplined defender he kept himself, and his team, to the highest personal standards - once cuffing errant winger Gordon Hill around the head for having the effrontery not to mark up for a throw in. And when asked for a 'quick word' by a journalist, settled for 'velocity' before walking off.

DENNIS IRWIN Left back
Manchester United, 1990-2002, 368 appearances, 22 goals Much is made of Sir Alex Ferguson's spending, but many of his best signings were absolute bargains. A mere £625,000 secured the Irishman from Oldham (who, even more pleasingly had taken him on a free from Leeds) and his prowess at right and left back earned him the faint praise of 'dependable'. He was much more than that. Great crosses and free kicks, huge energy up the flanks and quicker than he looked (though he looked like a bank clerk). Mick McCarthy, the chump, ended his international career for Ireland when he dropped him and told him to 'go out and prove himself'. He already had - hundreds of times.

DUNCAN EDWARDS Centre back
Manchester United, 1953-58, 151 appearances,20 goals Played more of a midfield role for the Busby Babes but, had he lived, he would most likely have been the sort of ball-playing centre-half that could have kept Bobby Moore out of the England team in 1966. In his five brief years of professional football, he became the youngest player to turn out for England and won two league titles before his death in the days after the Munich air disaster. Bobby Charlton rated him as 'the only player who made me feel inferior' - and he included George Best and Pele.

Default Re: Manchester United - Dream Team

lanjut ....

BRYAN ROBSON Centre midfield
Manchester United, 1981-1994, 345 appearances, 74 goals Separate in your mind Robson the manager from Robson the player. In the eighties he dragged both England and United by the scruff of the neck, as under Ron Atkinson and then in the early years of Ferguson's era, United were cup specialists. His all-action style left him increasingly fragile but when fit and on form he possessed all the drive of Roy Keane with the added ability to score crucial goals without chasing personal vendettas.

BOBBY CHARLTON Centre midfield
Manchester United, 1954-1973, 606 appearances, 199 goals Renowned now as a gentleman off the pitch but reputedly a grumpy customer on it, he nevertheless transformed himself from a top-class winger into the world's best central midfielder during his finest years. He lifted the World Cup (1966), the European Cup (1968) and was named European Footballer of the year following England's World Cup success. Raking passes, a booming shot, glorious goals and a preposterous comb-over made him one of the most recognisable players on the planet.

George Best
just BEST

DAVID BECKHAM Right midfield
Manchester United, 1993-2003, 361 appearances, 62 goals For the right wing slot, it is a choice between show-ponies: Beckham or Ronaldo? Either graces a billboard as well as the pitch but Beckham edges it for the unerring quality of his crossing, his under-rated hard work up and down the flank (at his peak at least) and the greater reliability of his free-kick taking.

ERIC CANTONA Striker
Manchester United, 1992-1997, 144 appearances, 64 goals There have been more skilful forwards (Rooney?) and more prolific (van Nistelerooy?) but no-one has made things happen quite so dramatically. The barren years without a title ended as Eric arrived, collar-up, shrugs at the ready to instil self confidence, imagination and a succession of vital goals - including the winner to clinch the Double against Liverpool in the 1996 FA Cup final. In the middle of all that, there was the odd kerfuffle, including the kung-fu kick on a Crystal Palace fan, but it all added to the mystique...

DENIS LAW Striker
Manchester United, 1962-1973, 309 appearances, 171 goals Not many can survive the legend of relegating United (with his backheel for City in 1974, though the Reds were already doomed by then), but his style, skill, courage and impudence made him a hero. For Busby he was the 'quickest thinking player I've ever seen ' and his reflexes were astonishing - the first to leap, flick or scissor-kick the ball speeding across the six-yard box. A scrawny runt of a player with a squint, he was still the best player Scotland has ever produced.

Well.. tapi pilihan masing maisng orang beda-beda sih...
