From Aston Villa's flawed recruitment policy to players who appear to have simply given up, the club's fall towards relegation can be traced back to absent owner Randy Lerner

* Aston Villa sit bottom of the Premier League, 12 points adrift of safety
* Remi Garde left as the club's manager by mutual consent on Tuesday
* Sporting director Hendrik Almstadt and chief executive Tom Fox have left
* Chairman Steve Hollis is prepared to axe head of recruitment Paddy Riley
* Villa made 12 signings last summer but Garde's squad still lacks quality
* Owner Randy Lerner wants to sell the club and is less and less involved

The whodunnit of Aston Villa's criminal season has a manifold cast list. There is the absentee owner, a chief executive with mixed priorities, a novice head of recruitment, an ill-equipped sporting director, two managers unable to generate results, years of deep-set problems, and a squad lacking in quality and commitment.

Much like Murder on the Orient Express, all are to degrees responsible but the fatal blow is difficult to pinpoint. Villa are heading for the Championship and while changes are afoot the issues run so deeply that an immediate return to the Premier League is difficult to fathom.

Chairman Steve Hollis has sacked sporting director Hendrik Almstadt, made clear to chief executive Tom Fox his future lay elsewhere, and is prepared to axe head of recruitment Paddy Riley too, as reported by Sportsmail on March 2.

Remi Garde left Aston Villa as manager on Tuesday by mutual consent with the club stranded in the table

Remi Garde left as manager on Tuesday, allowing the search for a replacement to begin in earnest. Nigel Pearson and Sean Dyche top the list because of their no-nonsense style and history of building clubs for promotion to the Premier League, while David Moyes is also said to be interested.

But the players are the ones who win points and that is where huge work is left to be done. This summer promises a significant turnover. Villa need to shift on certain individuals who are not good enough while others will look to move elsewhere rather than perform in the Championship.

The mentality and balance of the squad has not been right all season, though, and that can be traced to recruitment.

Wahbi Khazri is not the reason Aston Villa are going down. But his arrival to England is instructive nonetheless.

Garde, promised funds in January when taking over, had known Khazri a long time when deciding during the winter transfer window that here was a player who could lift spirits and raise quality.

Villa fans hold a 'Lerner Out' banner during the club's 2-0 defeat by Tottenham at Villa Park in March

Garde had wanted to take Khazri to Lyon years ago and his assistant Reginald Ray had worked with the Tunisia international at Bastia, liking his talent and personality.

The Villa manager made enquiries of his own to get the deal moving, and appeared to have support from above. The player was keen to move to the Premier League and had few qualms about joining a club in Villa's predicament.

What happened? Khazri signed for Sunderland for £8million. Set against the enormous riches Premier League clubs will receive from the multi-billion pound television deal that kicks in next season, the sum of money is negligible.

Garde, though, having been given assurances on spending, was then told by Almstadt and Riley this cost was too great.

Clearly, Khazri would have required superhuman performances to rouse a fight for survival from Villa. As has happened, he has done well with Sunderland, scoring and assisting in the victory over Manchester United, and contributing to Sam Allardyce's team picking up regular points. He could perhaps have done something similar for Villa, whose gap to safety now stands at 12 points.

There is a more significant point, however. Villa's reluctance, or inability, to sign Khazri, or any other player, raised the white flag. To supporters, to players, and to the manager. They have responded in kind, a brief flicker of life in beating Norwich swamped by seven losses since the window has closed.

The conclusion that Villa have given up seems inescapable. The atmosphere around the training ground has been described by sources as 'strained for some time', the mood defeatist.

But even more fundamentally, the Khazri story also represented a recurring issue at a club that has drastically lost its way and requires substantial work in the summer before a promotion campaign from the Championship can be considered genuine.

Like Tim Sherwood before Garde, and Paul Lambert preceding that, managers have been required to constantly fight internal battles before concentrating on the real stuff of finding wins.

Garde believed he would get new players in January so jettisoned those who would not subscribe to his methods. Gabby Agbonlahor, a vocal presence at Bodymoor Heath, only returned to the team when the window had closed and Garde realised he would have to make do, his authority left greatly depleted.

In Sherwood's case, for Khazri read Aaron Lennon. Sherwood knew what he would get with the livewire winger and helped put together a £6m deal before being instructed by chief executive Fox the signing would not happen. Lennon has proven his worth at Everton and his five Premier League goals are as many as any Villa player has managed, level with strikers Jordan Ayew and Rudy Gestede, who cost a combined £14m.

Instead Adama Traore was bought for £7m from Barcelona on wages of £40,000 under the recommendation of Riley. Two managers in succession have accepted Adama's raw ability but judged the 20-year-old is lacking the discipline for Premier League football.

That is a damning indictment on the recruitment processes employed this season. Managers miss out on preferred targets all the time, but rarely are they undermined by their own club in such a way. That needs to change urgently.

Almstadt's appointment as Villa's first sporting director last summer proved disastrous. The German came from Arsenal, having formed a bond with Fox while working at the Emirates together and his only success was the double of alienating two managers in quick succession through an unduly abrasive style and paucity of football acumen, as first revealed by Sportsmail on October 7.

He was ill-suited to the role, as those in Arsenal's scouting team have expressed to Sportsmail sources, and his appointment never reflected well on Fox.

Fox himself was more occupied with commercial results than those on the pitch, rarely getting involved in transfers, and was unable to display the leadership required of someone in his role.

Riley's position is perilous, with Villa searching for a new football operations officer, and a view emerging that his mistakes in the transfer market are crucial to how this season has panned out. He failed to generate a good relationship with either Sherwood or Garde, crucial in such a structure, and his lack of previous experience in negotiating with agents has been exploited.

The departures of Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph left a gaping hole that would have been difficult to fill even with the best recruiters in situ. But with Almstadt and Riley trying to learn on the job, the squad secured through 12 summer signings was disjointed and over-reliant on players fresh to the country making an immediate impact.

On-field mistakes have been frequent, with even seasoned performers culpable. Off the pitch, Joleon Lescott's car tweet and Brad Guzan's chewing gum games exacerbated the ill-feeling in the stands.

All of this can be traced back to Randy Lerner, of course. The owner's absenteeism led to a vacuum in the upper echelons of the club that has trickled down, prompting malaise developing into the attitudes of players who have seen the deterioration from Champions League challengers to relegation fodder.

Altering that is probably the biggest challenge facing a new manager at the club. Hollis has already concluded the structure will shift with David Bernstein and Brian Little on board, two figures who understand the game, but instilling the requisite mentality in the squad is paramount.

Fail there and the inquest may go on.

David Moyes favourite to replace Remi Garde after Frenchman leaves Aston Villa by mutual consent after disastrous four-month reign

* Remi Garde took over from Tim Sherwood at Aston Villa last November
* The Frenchman won just two league games during his time in charge
* Villa look certain to be relegated to the Championship as a result
* Garde's assistant Eric Black will take charge until the end of the season

David Moyes has emerged as a leading contender to take over as Aston Villa manager from Remi Garde, who has left the club.

It is understood Moyes, 52, had reservations about taking the job with Villa on the brink of relegation, but a board restructuring could make the post more appealing to the former Manchester United boss.

Garde replaced Tim Sherwood in November but a Villa official visited Moyes in Spain while he was in charge of Real Sociedad before the Frenchman was hired.

The Frenchman led Villa to two victories in 20 games and they are nine points adrift at the bottom of the table

David Moyes was formerly in charge at Real Sociedad after stints with Everton and Manchester United

Garde left having finally agreed compensation and assistant Eric Black was put in charge for the rest of the season.

Lawyers were at the Villa training ground to finalise matters, with all parties keen for a resolution before Saturday’s home game against Chelsea.

Chairman Steve Hollis, director David Bernstein and adviser Brian Little were also present for discussions.

The delay was down to negotiations over a pay-off, with Garde thought to be arguing that Villa’s refusal to release funds amounted to constructive dismissal, claiming he had been promised January signings.

The club are looking at a British manager with a pedigree for winning promotion. Nigel Pearson and Sean Dyche are also in the frame.

Villa won just twice in the Premier League under Garde and morale at the club is desperately depleted, with staff and players said to be 'going through the motions' ahead of the final seven Premier League fixtures.

Assistant Black, appointed in January, will take caretaker charge for the 12.45pm game against Chelsea at Villa Park, with the club opting against Kevin MacDonald, who became temporary boss when Tim Sherwood was sacked.

A club statement read: 'Manager, Remi Garde, has today left Aston Villa Football Club by mutual consent.

'The club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Remi for all his efforts during a difficult period and wish him well in the future.

'Eric Black will take over as acting manager until the club appoints a new manager.

'There will be no further comment from the club at this stage.'

Villa were also busy making an appointment on Tuesday, recruiting former FA executive Adrian Bevington to assist the board.

Bevington worked with Bernstein when managing director of Club England between 2010 to 2015, and will unite with his former colleague as part of the current review of the club's massive failings, helping to implement required changes.

Bevington was involved in the appointment of Roy Hodgson as England manager and would advise on a successor to Garde.

He has been working as advisor to Nottingham Forest owner Fawaz Al Hasawi on a part-time basis and will continue to do so until the end of the season, but only very minimally.

He is also assisting the Welsh FA ahead of Euro 2016 but his major focus is Villa.

Bernstein said: 'Adrian has a wealth of experience with over 20 years working at the highest level of football.

'He worked with many managers and coaches during his 17 years at the FA. I'm convinced his experience, contacts and understanding of football will be a tremendous asset to Aston Villa Football Club.'

Roberto Martinez has lost the Everton fans with his words and is running out of time to save his job... he talks a good game but the damage has already been done on the pitch

* Everton dropped to 14th in the Premier League after drawing at Watford
* Toffees are on a run of six wins in 24 matches and yet to reach 40 points
* Fans at Vicarage Road called for manager Roberto Martinez to be sacked
* The Everton boss has failed to address the club's slide this season
* Supporters also backed Leighton Baines after recent comments on form
* Blues have endured miserable season but are in the FA Cup semi-finals

'The fans are allowed to express their views. Once the game started, their support was magnificent and we felt that support. They are the best fans in world football,' said Everton boss Roberto Martinez after a banner calling for his head was unfurled ahead of the 1-1 draw at Watford.

Now winless in four matches and sitting 14th in the Premier League table, Martinez claimed earning a point at Vicarage Road was a 'strong' result. Maybe in isolation but not to fans who have witnessed the team amble to just six wins in 24 matches - five of which came against sides in the relegation zone.

It was yet more hyperbole used by the Everton boss after another disappointing showing. Hollow words the fans are accustomed to and have grown tired of.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez is coming under increasing pressure as the club's dismal form continues

The Spaniard talks a good game but failing to back up his claims on the pitch is wearing thin with the Toffees faithful - so much so that fans made their feelings known during Saturday's clash; boos rang out from the away end at half-time and after the final whistle. They are not impressed.

Supporters also backed Leighton Baines - a hugely popular figure at the club - with a 'Baines is one of us' banner after it was revealed the defender apologised following a meeting with Martinez over comments concerning recent poor form.

Sections of the away following also showed their allegiance with a song, chanting: 'Baines is right, Bobby's s****' in a pub close to the stadium ahead of kick-off. This was yet another incident which further alienated the manager from Everton's loyal and demanding fanbase.

Martinez was credited with re-opening the famed School of Science - the name given to the brand of football synonymous with the Everton sides of the sixties and eighties - but, as Baines suggested, chemistry in the team appears to be missing from the curriculum at present.

Results have not been good enough and have frustrated but Martinez's inability to acknowledge the failings have irked supporters further.

The Everton boss claimed Saturday's performance showed 'the team is on the up' as they dropped further down the standings. Quotes like this have seen fans lose complete faith.

Everton fans also displayed a banner stating 'Baines is one of us' at Vicarage Road in support of the defender

Football fans across the country tuning in to Match of the Day on Saturday night may have been shocked to see the banner demanding Martinez's dismissal.

For outsiders during this crazy season as Leicester sit top and Chelsea flounder, Everton's struggles - the club now positioned below West Brom, Swansea and Bournemouth in the table - have perhaps gone under the radar.

Yes, Everton have reached two semi-finals under Martinez this season - they take on West Ham or Manchester United at Wembley on April 23 - but those cup runs have come in spite of the abysmal performances the Toffees have served up this campaign.

The playing squad have failed to deliver but, as one of the most talented Everton sides of the last 20 years, that is down to Martinez as far as fans are concerned. The past two seasons have been nothing short of a disaster - the Blues finished 11th last season with 47 points and are just four places above the drop this year. It is a complete failure for a club with genuine ambitions to be a top-four side.

Observers may be shocked by the banner with Everton's form going under the radar during a crazy season

Form on their own soil has been a serious problem. A team boasting Romelu Lukaku, Leighton Baines, John Stones and Ross Barkley has amassed just 16 points from 16 matches at Goodison Park - only doomed Aston Villa have a worse record - and this Everton side look set to become the worst performers on home turf in the club's history.

Four wins, four draws and eight defeats amassed before they face Southampton, Bournemouth and Norwich.

The Toffees have conceded 28 goals in those games on Merseyside and hold one of the worst home records in Europe. Matches have become a chore for supporters and matchday is now void of enjoyment for the 40,000 Blues who attend Goodison week in, week out.

Enthusiasm has been sucked out of the fanbase to the extent some claim they are not looking forward to the trip to Wembley while others insist even a triumph in the FA Cup - what would be the club's first silverware in 21 years - will not be enough to convince supporters Martinez should remain at the helm.

It's become all too predictable for Everton under the former Wigan boss. The capitulations and leads thrown away at home to West Ham and Stoke and away to Bournemouth and Chelsea - the Blues conceded 13 goals in those games, four of which came in injury time - increased anger levels and have led to the fan revolt.

During Martinez's tenure, Everton have dropped 46 points from winning positions. The stats are damning.

Saturday's draw with the Hornets neatly summed up Everton this season. They took the lead through James McCarthy during first-half injury-time but went into the interval all square. They were ahead for all of 30 seconds.

Of course, the players must take their share of the blame, but Martinez's in-game management has been costly with poor decisions and tacticial changes coming at vital moments.

His insistence - some fans claim it was stubborness - to stick with Tim Howard in goal for the first part of the season despite the American's poor displays, further incensed the Everton crowd. It is felt a number of the defeats this season could have been avoided.

Further fume has been caused by Martinez's claims the club is developing, growing, getting better. Not the words fans want to hear from a man who has been in the hotseat for close to three years. They expect a more polished side, more the finished article. They want success; now.

Everton have lacked the high energy levels exuded by the Premier League's top two, Leicester and Tottenham, and have looked lethargic and void of ideas. There seems to be no clear plan to win games. Attack, attack, attack - there is little alternative under Martinez - will only get a team so far. Yes, some of the flowing football has delighted the Everton crowds but it has not earned the desired results.

As well, heads go down when Everton concede. Joe Royle's 'Dogs of War' and the hardworking sides of the David Moyes era fought to the end. The endeavor just doesn't seem to be there under Martinez, even with greater quality at his disposal.

Martinez openly admits he would never base a performance on keeping a clean sheet and, according to a first-team player, rarely works on set-pieces. When it is known a manager is neglecting parts of his job, it is hard for supporters to support him.

These are testing times at Everton and the pressure is building. Lukaku has spoken of his desire to play Champions League football next season, Baines last week gave an honest assessment of the team and felt they were lacking while captain Phil Jagielka appears to have the weight of the world on his shoulders. Meanwhile, Stones - at fault in the build-up to the Watford goal with a poor back pass on Saturday - has gone from one of the best young defenders in Europe to appearing a liability.

Not every Evertonian wants to see the back of Martinez but some polls on social media suggest over 90 per cent of supporters want to see a change. Of that number, the fanbase is split. While some do not feel Martinez is up to the job and want him sacked, others are keen for him to do well - focusing more on the man than the manager, perhaps - but acknowledge his failings. However, there are very few who believe he is actually capable of improving Everton's fortunes.

With each defeat or abject performance, support for Martinez has dwindled. Disappointing aspects of the season proving the 'final straw' for different fans at different times. There are few left sticking by him.

Quote:
THE DAMNING MARTINEZ STATS

- Everton have dropped 46 points from winning positions during Martinez's tenure

- The Toffees have amassed just 16 poins from 16 home games this season - only bottom club Aston Villa have a worse record

- Martinez's men will be the worst home performers in Everton history if they fail to win their final three fixtures at Goodison Park

- Everton have recorded just six wins in their previous 24 Premier League matches

- Just one of those victories has come against a side outside the relegation zone

- Everton have conceded 3+ goals 16 times in the 107 Premier League matches under the former Wigan manager
'I don't expect any fan to be happy after three defeats in the league. I don't think we are happy with it,' said Martinez on Saturday evening. Only with pressure growing has he really started to acknowledge the club's slide.

Referees, added injury time and bad luck have all been blamed by Martinez for this season's woes but fans are desperate for him to look closer to home.

As part of his ever-positive outlook, something that was needed and buoyed the club during his first year in charge as Everton finished fifth with 72 points - Martinez was idolised after that maiden campaign - he claims the squad has got stronger with each window since his arrival. This is true, but the fact the Toffees' league positions have dropped, points to the manager.

The Everton boss will insist the club is moving forward and on their way to achieving success. Martinez claimed the performance at Watford showed the side was 'on the up'. However, the reality is stark. Fans can see no progress and worry the club will continue to fail.

Having waited over a decade for fresh investment, Everton's call was answered in February by Farhad Moshiri who now owns 49.9 per cent of the club. However, as the Blues enter a new era, the club must decide whether the man currently in charge is the right person to spearhead the revolution.

After Martinez guided Everton past Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-finals, chairman Bill Kenwright remarked 'What a manager!' and is known to be loyal, aiding Moyes for 11 years before the Scot's departure in 2013.

However, the majority of fans have seemingly already made their mind up and that could sway the Everton hierarchy. The discontent shown in Watford could be the beginning of the end.

Time is running out for him. It is difficult to see how Martinez can get fans back on side. The results have not been good but his words have not helped him. Action on the pitch will be his only saviour but it is perhaps too late. The damage may have already been done.

prestasi merosot, pemain sekelas Baines, Howard jadi cadangan. ditambah isu pemain seperti Lukaku, Stones, Barkely diincar klub lain, terlebih mereka tidak lolos ke Eropa. jadi wajar fans meminta Martinez dipecat. akankah Moyes kembali ke klub yg membesarkan namanya?

Manuel Pellegrini would consider Everton move if Roberto Martinez is sacked

* Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini will leave the club this summer
* The Chilean is very much open to continuing his career in English football
* Everton boss Roberto Martinez is under pressure and could be sacked
* Pellegrini sees the Merseyside club as one with plenty of potential
* He is settled in England with his family and wants to stay

Outgoing Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini wants to stay in the Barclays Premier League next season and would be interested in the job at Everton.

Pellegrini will leave City when the league season ends on Sunday and will be replaced at the Etihad Stadium by Pep Guardiola.

The Chilean has endured a difficult final year at City and said his farewells in front of a half empty stadium after a home draw with Arsenal that has placed his current club's Champions League qualification in doubt.

But it is understood that Pellegrini is far from disillusioned with life in England and is very keen to stay.

He is aware of the speculation over Roberto Martinez's position at Everton and has told friends he would be very interested in taking over if the job became available.

Manuel Pellegrini would consider managing Everton when he leaves Manchester City this summer

Pellegrini sees Everton as a club with huge potential and believes he could have the same kind of success there that he enjoyed in Spain with Malaga and Villarreal.

Also, Pellegrini is settled in Cheshire with his wife Carola and would be keen to stay in the area.

The City manager revealed at the weekend that he will be setting off on a sightseeing tour of the UK once the season is over.
