'I'm not sure everyone wants to play for Manchester United now': Andy Cole says top players such as Erling Haaland would rather sign for Man City or Liverpool

* Andy Cole doesn't think United can currently attract a player of his quality

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole believes the club cannot attract top players such as Erling Haaland in the way they once could.

United, like most of Europe's big clubs, are interested in Borussia Dortmund striker, who is already well on his way to becoming one of the best players in the world.

'To get these guys to come, Haaland for instance, you've got to entice them with something,' Cole told The Mirror.

'You've got to entice them with the possibility of winning silverware or being a year away from it.

'These guys are going to have other options, possibly Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Real Madrid, maybe Barcelona.

'If you're playing and have the option of all these clubs, where would United really figure at this moment in time?

'Even though I love United, I don't think the club now can ride on its name alone, especially when you're trying to bring these players in.

'It's not like when I signed for United. We have to be brutally honest, back then everybody wanted to go there.

'We're talking 2021 now. Does everyone want to go to United now? I'm not quite sure everyone wants to now.'

* Former United striker described Bellingham as 'frightening' in his play
* 18-year-old midfielder has made 26 Bundesliga appearances this season

Andy Cole has told Manchester United to sign Jude Bellingham instead of Declan Rice in the upcoming transfer window.

West Ham boss David Moyes last week reiterated that Rice is not for sale and a bid would need to exceed £150M to even gain the attention of the chiefs at the London Stadium.

With that price-tag set, former United striker Cole has urged the club to sign Borussia Dortmund's Bellingham instead of his England counterpart.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Cole said: '£150m for a holding midfield player? That's a lot of money.

'Not sure how many goals he's going to get you from that position.

'We were just talking, if the opportunity comes about when Rice is available in the summer and you had Bellingham come available, who would you spend your £150m on?'

Bellingham has played less games and minutes in his respective league compared to Rice, but has ten goal involvements compared to five for the Hammers man.

Cole continued: 'Personally, I would go with Bellingham, he's 18 years of age and he goes that way, that way [points up and down], he creates chances, he scores goals.

'For such a young man, his ability is absolutely frightening. Bellingham has something extra, just energy.'

Last week Moyes reiterated that £150M for Rice 'now would be minimum but he is not for sale'.
