Albert Scanlon
22/12/2009 22:44, Report by Adam Bostock Busby Babe passes away Manchester United is sad to report the death of former player Albert Scanlon. He was 74. Born on 10 October 1935, Scanlon successfully came through the United youth system and made his debut for Matt Busby's first team in 1954, at the tender age of 19 - hence his inclusion in the group of players known as the 'Busby Babes.' Twice a title winner as an outside forward in 1956 and 1957, Scanlon was on the ill-fated flight from Belgrade to Manchester following a European Cup match in February 1958. When the plane crashed after refuelling in Munich, Scanlon was among the survivors while eight of his team-mates and 15 other passengers and crew lost their lives. After recovering from injuries sustained in the disaster, he continued his playing career at Old Trafford and accumulated 127 senior appearances and 35 goals for the Reds. He moved on to Newcastle United in 1960 and later played for Lincoln City and Mansfield Town before retiring in 1966. Everyone at Manchester United sends deepest condolences to Albert's family and friends. Code:

Sir Alex Ferguson pays tribute to the late Albert Scanlon
Busby Babe will be missed, says Sir Alex Dec 23, 2009 5:37:25 PM | By Michael Landon | goal.com Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has paid tribute to former Busby Babe Albert Scanlon, who has passed away at the age of 74. Scanlon made his debut at 19 for Matt Busby's first team in 1954. He then survived the Munich disaster four years later and went on to feature in all 42 league games for the club the following season. Ferguson told United's official website: "I have known Albert since I came to Manchester United and he was always a pleasant and delightful man. "He was always cheery and never lost his sense of humour despite the experience he had, and to come through that shows his strength of character. "He will be a great loss, as he was a popular man, and our condolences go to his family." A title winner in 1956 and 1957, Scanlon was on the ill-fated flight from Belgrade to Manchester following a European Cup match in February 1958. When the plane crashed after refuelling in Munich, Scanlon was among the survivors while eight of his team-mates and 15 other passengers and crew lost their lives. Fellow survivor Sir Bobby Charlton said: "It was with enormous sadness that I received the news of Albert's passing. "He was a part of Manchester United folklore and was always a popular figure with the fans, especially because he was a Manchester lad. "An exciting orthodox winger, he had pace, good ball control and could be relied upon to provide a constant supply of crosses to his fellow forwards. "Albert's place in Manchester United history is assured - he will never be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very sad time." After recovering from injuries sustained at Munich, including a broken leg and fractured skull, Scanlon continued his playing career at Old Trafford and accumulated 127 senior appearances and 35 goals. He moved on to Newcastle United in 1960 and later played for Lincoln City and Mansfield Town before retiring in 1966. |

Re: RIP Albert Scanlon
ALBERT SCANLON Born: 10 Oct 1935 Signed: 01 Dec 1952 Debut: 20 Nov 1954 v Arsenal (H) League Goals Total: 35 Appearances Total: 127 Position: Outside-left Left United: 01 Nov 1960 A speedy, thrustful outside-left, Albert Scanlon made an amazing recovery from head and leg injuries sustained in the Munich disaster to resume his career the following season. Pre-Munich, an ongoing battle for a starting berth with David Pegg restricted first team chances for Scanlon - a Youth Cup winner in 1953 and 1954. After the crash, incredibly, he featured in all 42 league matches and scored 16 goals as the Reds' re-built and recovering team finished the 1958/59 season as runners-up for the championship. His consistency dipped over the following seasons, however, despite his obvious pace and skill, and he was transferred to Newcastle United, a move which preceded quickfire transfers to Lincoln City and Mansfield Town. He assisted the Stags' successful promotion from Division Four in his first season at Field Mill, and went on to record 108 appearances and 21 goals before retiring. He was capped five times by England at Under-23 level, played once for the Football League, but fell just short of full international recognition - as did his uncle, United's outside-left of an earlier era, Charlie Mitten.
