Mario Balotelli will face no action after clash with Roberto Mancini

Jamie Jackson
guardian.co.uk

Man City manager Roberto Mancini and Mario Balotelli come into conflict at the end of training on Thursday.
Roberto Mancini says he is prepared to give Mario Balotelli at least "one hundred chances" after the striker clashed with the manager during training on Thursday.

Balotelli had refused to leaving the training pitch following a heavy tackle on a team-mate, Scott Sinclair, and Mancini was pictured grabbing Balotelli's training bib to forcibly remove him.

However, the manager said on Friday: "I will give him another one hundred chances if it is possible. I think that he can change because I am here for this. I give him other chances, for sure."

Mancini admitted he lost his temper for "one or two seconds" but played down the incident, and stated he had no regrets. "For two seconds, yes [I lost my temper], because he didn't want to leave the pitch.

"It didn't happen like bad things in the paper. We were playing a game and Mario kicked his team-mate. I say to him: 'Go inside, leave the pitch.' He say: 'No.' So I take his shirt and push him out. This is what really happened. Nothing special. No fight, no this not true. The pictures are false."

This is the latest in a catalogue of incidents involving Balotelli. Two weeks ago he aborted a plan to take the club to a Premier League tribunal and accepted a two-week fine for indiscipline, yet Mancini is insistent the striker still has a future at City. "No, no [this] doesn't change anything," he said.

When asked if Balotelli, who has been suffering from a virus, could start against Watford on Saturday, Mancini said: "No, he trained only four times this week. Not in the starting line-up, maybe on the bench.

"I spoke with Mario yesterday after training, I speak with him always. It is not easy to manage him and we can talk about him, but my thoughts about him don't change."

Manchester City fan banned after Rio Ferdinand derby confrontation

Press Association
guardian.co.uk

A Manchester City fan who encroached on the football field to confront Rio Ferdinand at the end of December's Manchester derby has been banned from attending matches for three years.

Matthew Stott, 21, was told he came close to going to prison, but instead his 56-day jail term was suspended for 12 months.

Stott had to be restrained by the Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart from confronting Ferdinand, who was already bleeding from a cut caused by a coin thrown from the stands at the end of the match.

Ferdinand had been celebrating Robin van Persie's late winner for United at City's Etihad Stadium when tempers boiled over.

Television footage of the incident was played at Manchester magistrates court showing Stott, who had sunk eight pints of lager before kick-off, trying to get at the United defender.

Andy Holt, prosecuting, told the court after police caught him and cuffed him on the pitch he shouted at the officers: "**** off you Munich bastards! **** off you Munich twats!"

Stott, a landscape gardener of Southfields, Knutsford, pleaded guilty to encroaching on the field of play and using insulting words or behaviour during the incident on 9 December.

His father, who attended the match with his son, sat in the public gallery during sentencing by District Judge Paul Richardson.

As well as the football ban and suspended jail sentence, he was ordered to do 120 hours community service, pay £145 in costs and observe an 8pm to 6am home curfew for three months.

District Judge Richardson commended the England goalkeeper Hart for quickly stopping Stott getting at Ferdinand. He said it was "difficult to associate" the glowing character references for Stott with what he had seen on screen.

He added: "He chose to attack somebody on a football pitch. But for the timely and appropriate intervention of the City goalkeeper, the situation would have been a lot worse and could have triggered a serious incident of disorder."

Rebecca Caulfield, defending Stott, said he had drunk eight pints of lager before the incident which was not planned, and he could now not remember what he had done.

She added: "He's lost his job, he's received death threats and his family has suffered intimidation by members of the public, in person, by telephone, camping outside his father's flat, and threats on Facebook."

Stott issued an apology through his solicitor the day after the match saying he was "extremely ashamed" of his actions and apologised to Ferdinand and United's fans.

The City season ticket holder, who had never been in trouble with the police before, said he had let his club down. Officials at City immediately withdrew his season ticket and said later if he was convicted at court he would face a lifetime ban.

Millions of TV viewers watching the game televised live by Sky Sports, also saw the United striker Wayne Rooney being forced to dodge an array of objects thrown in his direction as he took a corner.

The match ended in the ugly scenes when Robin van Persie's injury-time free-kick gave United the three points after City had previously fought back from 2-0 down.

Stott was sentenced on Friday along with a number of other fans involved in trouble.

A turkey farmer Christopher Johnson, 52, of Ancoats Lane, Alderley Edge, Cheshire, admitted threatening and abusive behaviour after invading the pitch and running towards United fans, gesturing "come on" before his arrest. He was given 100 hours community service, £145 in costs and a three-year football banning order.

Joshua Rushton, 17, from Farr Street, Edgeley, Stockport, was given a £100 fine and ordered to pay £85 costs and given a three-year football banning order after pleading guilty to throwing a coin and a bottle at rival spectators at the ground. Rushton was already serving a temporary three-match ban at the time of the derby for misbehaviour and should not have been in the stadium.

District Judge Richardson allowed the press to name the defendant, who is still a juvenile, following a legal challenge by Mike Keegan of the Manchester Evening News. Rushton, who has a string of convictions, told the judge: "They can't put me in the paper," because he was not yet 18. But the judge, who had already warned Rushton about his "lip" decided he should be named. Rushton stormed out of court.

A Manchester University student, Sam Weatherby, 21, of Grant Street, Farnworth, Bolton, who is studying a sports management degree and works part-time at Asda, was given 100 hours community service and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

Philip O'Leary, 24, of Heysbank Road, Disley, Stockport, was given the same sentence after the pair broke their football banning orders by going into Manchester city centre on a day when United were playing a game.

Christopher O'Neil, 21, of Swainsthorpe Drive, Manchester, Andrew Martin, 20, of Northdale Drive, and Nicholas Morley, 21, of Chapel Lane, both Blackley, were all charged with being drunk and disorderly after trouble broke out at the Flying Horse pub in Blackley following the game.

All admitted the offence and were given a £60 fine with £80 costs to be taken out of their state benefits.

Sir Alex Ferguson says access to Manchester City training is a problem

Press Association
guardian.co.uk

Sir Alex Ferguson says there is a problem with the access media have to Manchester City's training ground.
Sir Alex Ferguson has said it would never be possible to gain access to Manchester United's training sessions in the way that has caused Manchester City so much strife.

City have hit the headlines after pictures emerged yesterday of a training ground fracas between Roberto Mancini and Mario Balotelli. Although Mancini insists the row between the two Italians was not as bad as the images appeared, it has nevertheless painted City in a negative light.

City's problem is that their training ground has a public pathway running alongside, offering photographers easy access. Though United are based less than a mile away, the situation there could not be more different, as what public access there is affords no clear view of the training ground itself. Ferguson views the security measures as absolutely essential.

"You are protecting the possibility of success," Ferguson said. "Do ICI send an email to another biochemicals company telling them their new discoveries in drugs? Does any major company tell its opponents what they are doing? I am sure they don't.

"Unfortunately football has a media profile which means cameramen want to be at training sessions. I think that is ridiculous but it makes it very difficult for a coach to do their work because you don't know where the information can go.

"I think it stopped at Real Madrid under José Mourinho, but there are some places where the press are in every day. This is what they expect. I know it happens in Italy. I don't know how you can do your tactical work.

"Fortunately, at our place, we can guard against it to a decent degree," Ferguson added, before joking: "Sometimes we get a photographer wandering over in the woods – but we can put wolves in there!"

Keeping training ground information within the confines of Carrington is a serious business for Ferguson, and in the past journalists have been banned from attending press conferences for publishing information Ferguson felt should have remained secret.

This season United have taken the step of remaining in England to train before flying to away Champions League ties to avoid taking training on opponents' grounds, which is supposed to be open for just 15 minutes but often can be seen in its entirety.

"No matter which stadium you go to, you can't do anything," Ferguson continued. "Just general possession and boxes. Training at our own ground we can do something. We can pick a team for a start, work on tactical formations and set-pieces. You can't do that when you are training at someone else's ground."

Man City 'want Cavani,' says assistant

Roberto Mancini’s assistant Angelo Gregucci has confirmed Manchester City “want Edinson Cavani” and believes Mario Balotelli “is among the world’s top 10 strikers.”

Gregucci was brought in this summer as a specialist defensive coach and spoke to Radio CRC today.

“I don’t know if the club will lay siege to Napoli for Cavani, but every club with a player of the highest level will know they’ll be courted by bigger clubs,” said Gregucci.

“Mancini decides the transfer targets along with the new directors. If you ask the clubs who can afford Cavani, for example Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Manchester United, then I think they’d want Cavani just as Manchester City want him.

“However, what the player wants is the predominant factor in negotiations and it seems to me that Cavani is happy at Napoli.

“If he should want to undertake a new adventure, then he will tell the club and I expect they’d let him go. Cavani is among the world’s top five strikers and is doing great things. Napoli invested heavily in him, but the player’s intentions are decisive.”

Gregucci also commented on Balotelli after last week’s training ground bust-up with Mancini.

“Mario has huge potential and is a treasure for our football. As for the recent events, I’d prefer not to talk about them so as not to make too much of it.

“Seeing him train, though, I think Mario should be included in the world’s top 10 strikers.”

Linesman Who Advised Man City Players to Thank Fans off Duty: Why It's Wrong

John Brooks, until recently obscure assistant referee working in England, shot to fame over the weekend when video emerged showing him advising Manchester City players to thank fans who had paid £62 to watch their team play Arsenal. Now his employers seem to think that publicity is too much.

Professional Game Match Officials Limited, the group that assigns officials to English football fixtures, took Brooks off duty for Tuesday's FA Cup match between West Bromwich Albion and Queens Park Rangers. That was the wrong decision, no matter which reasons PGMOL listed for it.

If you missed it, Brooks' sudden fame stems from an incident following Manchester City's 2-0 win at Arsenal on Sunday. After the final whistle, as the players shook hands with the officials, Brooks advised some City players to thank their fans (video here).

Those fans had paid £62 for entry into the stadium. The high cost had sparked intense media attention all week, with City returning more than 900 tickets un-purchased (via Daily Mail).

News floated around the Internet late Monday that Brooks had been taken off duty for Tuesday's West Brom-QPR match. On Tuesday, PGMOL said the decision shouldn't be taken to mean Brooks had come under fire from the organization.

The Guardian reports:

Quote:
Brooks is a first-year official in the Premier League and because of his relative inexperience there were fears within the PGMOL that he might have been unsettled by the sudden interest. Sources have emphasised that his removal should not be construed as the authorities taking a dim light of his comments about the high ticket prices at the Emirates.

Instead, it has been described as a "sensible precaution" in keeping with the PGMOL's policy that the match officials should not be seen as the story and put under undue pressure.
PGMOL has taken similar action with Sian Massey and Mark Clattenburg previously. Brooks will not receive his normal match fee, according to the report.

The move makes some sense, considering Brooks' status as a first-year official in the Premier League. As an inexperienced linesman, Brooks is likely unaccustomed to the spotlight.

Furthermore, PGMOL can manage officials as it pleases. The organization's purpose, according to one Guardian source, is to "protect our officials." This move can be interpreted as such.

But if Brooks is not being punished, and if he really is being taken off duty through no fault of his own, then it makes no sense to withhold the pay he would have received for working the match.

And if PGMOL's decision-makers are worried that Brooks will be overwhelmed by publicity, they should consider what taking him off a match will do. Instead of shielding Brooks from excess publicity, PGMOL has instead made it seem like Brooks is being punished for saying something most fans would appreciate.

True or not, that will only increase Brooks' suddenly substantial media profile.

To outsiders, it looks like PGMOL is trying to neutralize Brooks' voice. And to outsiders, Brooks only said something that any regular, decent human would do. Since his words didn't affect the outcome of the match, it's unclear what was wrong with them.

PGMOL won't care about that, of course. The organization will—and should—make decisions in the best interest of its officials. In this case, though, it's hard to understand what Brooks did wrong, or how he is being best-served.

Is It Time for Manchester City to End the Mario Balotelli Saga?

The January transfer window is in full swing, and the daily rumour mill seems to be churning out story after story about Manchester City’s Italian striker Mario Balotelli.

Reports suggest that the player could be set for a move back to Italy, with AC Milan interested in acquiring his signature.

Balotelli was an unused substitute during City’s 2-0 home victory over Fulham on the weekend, as Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko seem to be in front of the striker at the Etihad Stadium.

His time with the Premier League champions has been anything but straightforward, with countless misdemeanours both on and off the pitch.

This season he has struggled for form, scoring only one goal in only seven league appearances. He has never really been able to nail down a place in the starting XI, and it now seems that Roberto Mancini has lost faith in his compatriot.

So, has the time come for this crazy soap opera to finally end?

Probably. It would seem that a fresh start would suit both player and club at this time.

Balotelli was coming off the back of an excellent Euro 2012—where he completely dominated one of the best centre-backs in European football in Mats Hummels—while leading Italy to the final.

It was thought that he had finally come of age and that this would be his big season in both the Premiership and the Champions League. Sadly, it was not to be.

A return to Italy and a return to regular first-team action may be just what this maverick needs. He could be playing for the club that he supports and loves. Who knows, this may inspire Balotelli to reach the potential he undoubtedly has.

With the talks set to take place on Monday between City and Milan, it could be a question of watching this space.

City have said that they would like around £31 million for the striker, but the figure could be closer to the £24 million that Mancini paid Inter for him back in 2010.

City would do well to get back what they paid for him and cut their losses. With Balotelli, every little scenario is front- and back-page news and puts the club under the microscope even further.

It is already difficult enough for the team to cope with the pressure that the money of Sheik Mansour brings without them being scrutinised even further by what can only be described as biased quarters of the press.

The team has three world-class strikers already on their books and a youngster in John Guidetti who should be playing Premier League football already, so they could deal with the blow of losing Balotelli.

So it could be a case of "thanks for the memories, Mario." Some have been mad, some have been downright idiotic and some have been utterly breathtaking.
