LIVERPOOL 2
(Shelvey 32, Cole 84)

MANCHESTER UNITED 2
(Ajose 18, Obertan 87)

Res: Liverpool 2 United 2
06/05/2011 06:03, Report by Adam Marshall

United's reserves forced a 2-2 draw with a Liverpool side containing several players with first-team experience.

Nicky Ajose, who returned for a run-out with the Reds before ending his loan spell at Bury, saw his early goal overturned by Jonjo Shelvey and Joe Cole's drive that deflected off team-mate Nikola Saric. However, Warren Joyce's men secured a point when Gabriel Obertan hit a late equaliser and there were plenty of positives to take from the game - including Matty James' comeback from injury.

A keenly-contested affair unfolded with United clearly not going through the motions despite already having the group title in the bag. Ajose was a constant threat with his pace and was twice almost played through in quick succession before opening the scoring after 18 minutes. Marnick Vermijl's forceful run took him past Steve Irwin and his cross was tucked home by the Bury loanee.

There was a scare for the visitors when Davide Petrucci diverted an Irwin cross towards Ben Amos, before Obertan forced a block out of Danny Wilson at the other end and then snatched at a chance following a fine one-two with Ajose.

Shelvey levelled matters for Liverpool when Cole touched a short free-kick into his path as the former Charlton midfielder's powerful drive flew past a motionless Amos.

Ajose almost restored United's lead when forcing Deale Chamberlain to beat the ball away and the youngster was unable to convert after the break from a brilliant move involving Oliver Norwood and Vermijl.

The impressive Shelvey chipped a decent attempt over the top but there was a let-off for the hosts when Joshua King burst clear and appeared to be held back by Wilson. The Norwegian still scrambled the ball past Chamberlain but the keeper recovered to pounce on the loose ball.

With Oliver Gill and Scott Wootton outstanding in defence, the match was drifting towards a draw when King and Cole passed up decent openings.

However, there was late drama with the Merseysiders building up a head of steam. Shelvey's shot flicked off Norwood to force a diving save out of Amos but the keeper had no chance when another deflected effort, from the off-colour Cole, bounced off Saric's back and into the net.

It looked certain to prove the winner with only six minutes left but United's never-say-die ethos runs through the club and, when Norwood's free-kick thudded off a post, Obertan kept his composure to side-foot the rebound into the unguarded net.

United: Amos; Vermijl, Wootton, Gill, Brady; James (Blackett 46), Norwood, Petrucci; King (Ekangamene 80), Obertan, Ajose (Morrison 60). Subs not used: Devlin, Lawrence.

Matty James akhirnya muncul juga setelah sembuh cedera. Lumayan meski cuman 45 menit.

Obertan butuh jam terbang tinggi di tim utama. Bukan hanya sekedar tampil reguler d tim Reserve. Musim depan harus dipinjamkan ke tim kelas EPL.

Northern Group play-off
Wednesday 11 May 2011
Old Trafford

MANCHESTER UNITED 1
(Petrucci 65 (pen))

BLACKBURN ROVERS 2
(Rochina 21, 31)

Reserves: United 1 Blackburn 2

Quote:
Darren Fletcher and Rafael couldn't help prevent a play-off defeat for United's Reserves against Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

The senior stars injected a healthy dose of experience into the Reds' starting line-up, but two Ruben Rochina strikes in the first period gave Rovers the platform to seal victory. A Davide Petrucci penalty midway through the second half redcued the arrears but Warren Joyce's men failed to find another goal to force the game into a penalty shootout. Blackburn will now meet Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday in the national play-off.

Despite the result, there was some good to come out of Wednesday's game. Darren Fletcher, who's played just 17 minutes of first-team football since 6 March, was handed an opportunity to gain some much-needed match fitness and played 65 minutes in the centre of midfield. Sir Alex Ferguson has made it clear he wants Fletcher to play in the Champions League final later this month and the Scot showed enough against Blackburn's second-string to suggest he's well on the road to full fitness.

There was also a place in the starting XI for young Brazilian Rafael, who played 45 minutes on the right side of midfield and almost forced a chance in the opening minute. Rovers stopper Mark Bunn did well to snuff out the danger. Fletcher was also involved early on, teeing up Oliver Norwood to blast just over from 20 yards before dragging a shot of his own just past the post a minute later.

More sound goalkeeping then kept Blackburn in the game, as Bunn produced a splendid stop to tip over Gabriel Obertan's powerful volley. The Frenchman was a constant menace down the left flank in the first period, his pace and power proving a real headache for Rovers right-back Josh Morris.

The visitors hung on, though, and took the lead against the run of play when Rochina unleashed an unstoppable effort from 22 yards that flew past Ben Amos in the United goal. But while the strike was out of the top drawer, Rochina will have been surprised by the amount of space he was afforded in the final third.

Rafael hit the base of the post less than 60 seconds after the restart with a smart volley but it was as close as the Reds came to drawing level before Blackburn struck again just on the half-hour. Rochina nabbed his second with a strong finish into the roof of the net from 12 yards after a smart backheel from Michael Potts had played in the Spaniard.

Neither side fashioned a further chance in the first period and the Reds made a double change at the start of the second. Rafael made way for Davide Petrucci, while Nicky Ajose replaced Oliver Norwood.

That prompted a switch in formation, too, as United went from 4-5-1 to a loose 4-3-3, with Ajose flanked by King and Obertan. It almost paid immediate dividends when Bunn spilled a stinging Petrucci shot before doing well to block Ajose's close-range rebound.

The game then threatened to boil over when Robbie Brady and Reece Brown were booked in quick succession for full-blooded challenges (Brown's ended Rochina's involvement in the game), but referee Dean Mohareb did well to diffuse the situation.

United continued to probe for a way back into the game and were duly rewarded on 65 minutes when King's driving run was halted inside the penalty area. Substitue Petrucci stepped up to tuck away the spot-kick and reduce the arrears.

Blackburn's two-goal lead would have been restored a minute later had Ben Amos not stood firm as Rovers substitute Tom Hitchock bore down on him. The Reds goalkeeper was then relieved to see Mauro Formica miss the target after Amos' heavy touch gifted the midfielder a sight of goal.

With a place in the national play-off at stake, United threw men forward in search of a second goal. Petrucci hit the target from distance and Obertan rippled the side-netting, but Blackburn stood firm to see off the Reds' late rally and book a date with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next week.

Remember, though: United's league challenge may be over but there's still a Lancashire Senior Cup semi-final (v Blackburn) and a Manchester Senior Cup final (v Bolton) to look forward to.

United: Amos, Vermijl, Wootton, Gill, Brady; Rafael (Petrucci 46), Brown R, Fletcher (Cofie 65), Norwood (Ajose 46), Obertan, King. Subs not used: Devlin, Blackett

Blackburn: Bunn, Henley, Morris, Lowe, Hanley, Parry, Formica, Potts, Kalinic (Hitchcock 65), Rochina (Evans 53), Aley (Ramm 78). Subs not used: Kean, Pearson
