Default United defender under Rangnick

Paul Ince says Ralf Rangnick must improve Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw and turn them into an attacking threat like Liverpool duo Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson

* Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw provide little attacking threat, Ince said
* Duo must get better under Ralf Rangnick if United are to improve this season
* United's new interim manager is among the architects of 'Gegenpressing'

Ralf Rangnick must drastically improve Manchester United's full-backs if he is to be a success at Old Trafford, according to Paul Ince.

Earlier this week, the German was confirmed as United's interim manager until the end of the season and could take charge of his first game on Sunday when Crystal Palace travel to Old Trafford.

One of the architects of Gegenpressing (counter-pressing), Rangnick is expected to turn United from a side that often looked disjointed when trying to win the ball back under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer into a high-intensity pressing team.

And Ince believes getting more out of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw will be high on the German's list of priorities.

‘I think what he’d [Rangnick] want more is from his full-backs. You look at the full-backs putting balls into the box […] he needs to work with Wan-Bissaka, he really does,' he told The United Stand.

‘How can I put it? From an attacking point of view, the modern game is about players getting forward, we’ve seen it with [Trent] Alexander-Arnold and [Andy] Robertson.

'They are high up the park like a third attacker.'

Paul Ince believes Ralf Rangnick must improve Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw. The 63-year-old is one of the architects of the Gegenpressing (counter-pressing) approach. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson have been crucial to Liverpool's success. While Reece James has been in great goalscoring form for Chelsea so far this term. Wan-Bissaka doesn't carry the same attacking threat of his Liverpool counterparts. While Shaw has struggled to replicate the kind of form he had shown last season for United

Since joining from Palace for £50 million in the summer of 2019, Wan-Bissaka has made the right-back position his own at Old Trafford but has rarely been a threat in the final third of the pitch.

The 24-year-old has provided eight assists and scored twice in 82 Premier League appearances for United. Over the same period, Alexander-Arnold has delivered 27 assists and scored seven goals, while Robertson has set up 19 goals and netted three himself.

Shaw, meanwhile, was one of United's best performers last season and was a lynchpin of England's run to the Euro 2020 final, in which he scored the opening goal against Italy.

The former Southampton left-back appeared to have finally recovered from the horrific leg break that threatened to derail his career in 2015, but has failed to reach the same heights this season.

Ince, who won seven major honours during six seasons at Old Trafford, conceded United did not have the right platform for their full-backs to bomb forward like some of their Premier League counterparts.

‘He [Rangnick] needs to work on getting his full-backs up the pitch and the reason why it’s hard for them to get up the pitch is because they’ve got no pace at the back,' the former England international added.

‘The full-backs have always been told by the centre-halves to stay alongside me because if it goes over the top we need a bit of pace. That’s the problem.

‘I think it’s tough because [Eric] Bailly is quick but can be erratic at times, but then can be outstanding at times as we saw in the Champions League,’

‘[Victor] Lindelof’s got no pace […] even if you look at [Raphael] Varane who is quick and Bailly, then you’ve got two quick centre-backs.
