Rest in peace...

UNITED SADDENED AS ANDY GORAM PASSES AWAY

Manchester United send their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of our former goalkeeper Andy Goram after it was announced that he has sadly passed away, aged 58.

Andy, who was nicknamed ‘The Goalie’, announced in April that he had terminal cancer and our club joins the football world today in mourning his passing.

Goram is best known as a player for Rangers, with whom he made 260 appearances and proudly won five league titles and five domestic cups.

He is a member of the Scottish Football Hall of Fame, and was named both the Scottish PFA and Football Writers’ Player of the Year in 1992/93. In a supporters' poll in 1999, he was voted Rangers' greatest goalkeeper of all time.

Goram joined United on loan during the 2000/01 season and made two appearances in our successful run-in to the Premier League title. He was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson, who knew the goalkeeper well after handing him the first of his 43 Scotland caps in 1985, before taking him to the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

Everyone at the club is thinking of Andy’s family, loved ones and former colleagues at this extremely sad time.

Man United to unveil a statue of club legend Jimmy Murphy outside Old Trafford next May, 65 years to the day since Sir Matt Busby's former assistant led them to the 1958 FA Cup Final just months after the Munich Air Disaster

* Manchester United are to unveil a statue of club legend Jimmy Murphy next May
* He helped lead United to the 1958 FA Cup Final following the Munich Air Disaster
* The statue will be unveiled on May 3 - 65 years to the day he reached the Final
* Murphy, who died in 1989, was Sir Matt Busby's assistant boss from 1946 to 1971

Manchester United are to unveil a statue of club legend Jimmy Murphy - 65 years to the day he led them to the FA Cup Final following the Munich Air Disaster.

The sculpture - of a man integral to the rebuild following the tragedy - will stand behind the Stretford End and will be revealed on May 3 next year, following talks with fans.

Designed by Scots sculptor Alan Herriot – who also crafted the statue of Denis Law in the ex-player’s home city of Aberdeen – the work will face what was an ash-cinder training pitch where Murphy used to put the Busby Babes through their paces.

Murphy was assistant manager to Sir Matt Busby from 1946 to 1971 and his time encompassed the Munich Air Disaster, subsequent rebuild and European Cup triumph.

In the months after the tragedy he led a hastily put-together side to Wembley, where they were defeated 2-0 by Bolton Wanderers.

The addition will join existing statues of Busby, Sir Alex Ferguson, and the 'United Trinity' of Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best and Law outside Old Trafford.

Collette Roche, chief operating officer of Manchester United, said: ‘Jimmy Murphy was one of the most important figures in the history of this great club. He was not only Sir Matt Busby’s chief coach and then assistant for 25 years, but perhaps most importantly led us out of the darkest period in our history.

Murphy helped lead the club to the FA Cup Final months after the Munich Air Disaster, with the wreckage of the plane seen here after the crash on February 6, 1958. In the months after the tragedy Murphy (pictured front right) led a hastily put-together side to Wembley to compete in the 1958 FA Cup Final - which they lost 2-0 by Bolton Wanderers

‘In those terrible days after the Munich tragedy, Jimmy was the man who held this club together and built a team that reached the FA Cup final. No matter the result, it was a remarkable achievement to even be at Wembley – something that on February 6, 1958, seemed inconceivable.

‘It is fitting that this wonderful statue should be unveiled on May 3, the date of that final against Bolton Wanderers and at the Stretford End, overlooking the land where Jimmy used to train the Busby Babes.’

Pat Burns, Chair of The Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation (MMMF), who worked with the club on the statue, said: 'I was moved when I saw the statue and there is no doubt that Alan has done a fantastic job in capturing the passion and image of one of the backroom legends at Old Trafford.

Murphy's sculpture will join existing statues of Busby, Sir Alex Ferguson, and the 'United Trinity' of Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best and Law (pictured) outside Old Trafford

'I know the Murphy family, who joined us on the trip to Scotland, were also hugely impressed with the progress.

'It will be a special occasion on May 3 when we finally unveil the statue marking Jimmy’s extraordinary contribution to United at the most tragic time in this club’s history.’

Murphy played for West Brom and Swindon, and both represented and managed Wales. He passed away in 1989 at the age of 79.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Roy Carroll makes a surprise return to football for his boyhood club at the age of 45... but he lasted just 36 minutes after suffering an injury!

* Roy Carroll won the Premier League and FA Cup while at Manchester United
* He also made 45 caps for Northern Ireland and played for a host of other clubs
* Carroll, aged 45, returned to action for his boyhood club Ballinamallard United
* His return lasted 36 minutes after he went off injured having conceded once

Former Manchester United and Northern Ireland goalkeeper Roy Carroll made a surprise return to football after starting between the sticks for his boyhood club Ballinamallard United.

Unfortunately for Carroll, it was not the stuff of fairy tales as the 45-year-old was forced off injured after 36 minutes before his side went on to lose 4-0 to Annagh United in the Northern Ireland Football League Championship (NIFL).

Carroll, who played for United, Wigan and West Ham among several others, stepped up for Ballinamallard in an emergency as the club were hit by injuries.

The goalkeeping coach donned the gloves in an appearance that came almost 30 years after he made his debut for the semi-pro side.

He had played for Ballinamallard as a teenager before moving to the UK to start life as a professional footballer, firstly at Hull.

Carroll conceded once before was replaced by another goalkeeper Josh Brownlee, who is some 23 years younger.

The former shot-stopper made 45 appearances for Northern Ireland and has played in all parts of the world including at home, England, Scotland, France and even Greece.

One moment in Carroll's long career that football fans will all remember is his infamous save against Tottenham in 2005 where he clawed the ball back from so far over the line you could almost see the net ripple.

Although Carroll had tough competition from Fabian Barthez for a place in the Old Trafford goal, he picked up a Premier League medal in 2002-03.

He also won an FA Cup medal after coming on as a late substitute for Tim Howard in the final against Milwall.

The pandemic hit Carroll hard, having initially forced him to leave his job as a goalkeeping coach at Nottingham Forest's academy after one day and return to Northern Ireland a year ago.

Carroll, who has often been open about his battles with alcohol and depression, told Sportsmail last year that he was starting to struggle again before Dungannon Swifts offered him the opportunity to play again at the age of 43, two years after his last Irish League appearance for Linfield.

Ex Manchester United wonderkid John Cofie, 30, appears in court charged with raping woman in 2019

* John Cofie, 30, has appeared in court in Manchester on a 2019 rape charge
* Man Utd paid £1m for Cofie to sign for them when he was just 14
* Both Cofie and co-defendant Nathan Stuart deny the charges

A former Manchester United youth player -once tipped to take the Premier League by storm- appeared in court yesterday accused of rape.

John Cofie, 30, denied the charge at Manchester Minshull Street crown court for the offence that allegedly took place in 2019.

Cofie, along with co-defendant Nathan Stuart, is accused of raping a woman in Trafford, Greater Manchester.

Cofie famously became the youngest ever £1million footballer when Sir Alex Ferguson signed him from Burnley for the youth team at age 14.

However, wonderkid Cofie’s Red Devils career never took off and he never made a full appearance for the side.

Instead he spent lengthy periods on loan at clubs including Sheffield United and Belgian side Royal Antwerp.

In 2013, after being released from the club, Cofie had spells at Barnsley, Crawley Town and Wrexham – without pushing on.

The talented footballer struggled for game time at the club and never made a full appearance for the side. After leaving Manchester United, Cofie had a short spell at Barnsley before retiring at 27

After retiring age 27, Cofie now works as a football coach at a Lancashire school.

The Ghanian born football ace still has many high profile friends he met through Manchester United.

Both defendants deny the charge.
