Rio Ferdinand predicts Mauricio Pochettino will become Manchester United's next boss, but not until the end of the season... and backs former Old Trafford assistant Carlos Queiroz as strong interim choice

* Mauricio Pochettino is keen on taking over at Manchester United mid-season
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked the day after the 4-1 defeat against Watford
* Pochettino, the current PSG manager, is among the favourites to replace him
* Rio Ferdinand believes he will take over, but not until the end of the campaign
* He has also singled out Carlos Queiroz as a potential caretaker option for United

Rio Ferdinand believes that Manchester United will appoint current PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager, but not until the summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked at the weekend after the 4-1 defeat at Watford, and Michael Carrick - part of the previous coaching staff - has taken over temporarily.

During his stint in charge, United will look to appoint a caretaker boss until the end of the season, although Pochettino has quickly emerged as a potential candidate.

Sportsmail revealed that Pochettino, the former Tottenham coach, is interested in quitting Paris and taking up the vacancy at Old Trafford mid-season.

Ferdinand, however, believes that this move will only happen in several months - and has tipped a left-field candidate to fill in until then.

'I don't think that Pochettino leaves PSG during the season,' he said on Vibe with FIVE. 'He's a man of integrity, he's a man of respect.

Mauricio Pochettino will become Manchester United's next boss, Rio Ferdinand has predicted. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was axed after the Watford loss, and Pochettino is favourite to take over. Ferdinand believes Pochettino, the current PSG coach, will take over at the end of the season. Pochettino is willing to quit PSG now after wrestling with big egos, and join United mid-season

'I think he's grateful for the opportunity to be at PSG and as a man, I think he'll just say: "If they want me that bad they'll wait."

'I think from the media that we saw over the last couple of years when he was out of work, that for him Man United is the pinnacle, is the club he'd love to get to, get his hands on and guide the club.

'He's got a lot of stuff going on at PSG so you have to be respectful in that sense.

'It's about what PSG want as well because they're not the kind of club that will just relinquish their manager.

'I'm putting money on Pochettino, for the end of the season, start of next season, my money's on Pochettino being manager.'

It is understood that Pochettino is unhappy with life in France, with his family still living in London while he is staying at a Paris hotel.

He has also experienced difficulties marshalling the big dressing room egos at his current club - like Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

A number of other managers have been tipped to take the United helm until the end of the season, including Carrick, former player Laurent Blanc and Ralf Rangnick.

Carlos Queiroz, the former United assistant, was name dropped as a potential United interim

But Ferdinand has picked out another candidate, having name dropped former United assistant Carlos Queiroz as a potential pick.

'What about Carlos Quieroz?' he said. 'I think if Man United come calling for someone like Carlos Quieroz he drops whatever he's doing.'

Currently, Queiroz, 68, is managing Egypt. He spent two stints at United as a coach under Sir Alex Ferguson, and has also managed Portugal, Iran and Colombia.

Manchester United 'make contact with Brendan Rodgers after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sacking' with club 'prepared to fork out £8m release fee' for Leicester manager

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked just hours after a 4-1 defeat to Watford
* Brendan Rodgers is the bookmakers' favourites to replace Norwegian at United
* Former Liverpool boss said speculations linking him with job was 'disrespectful'
* Mauricio Pochettino also in the running and would be prepared to quit PSG

Manchester United have reportedly contacted Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers as they look to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 20-time champions of England relieved the Norwegian of his duties on Sunday morning, less than 24 hours after an embarrassing 4-1 defeat at Watford extended United's slump to four losses in the last five Premier League outings.

United have placed Michael Carrick in interim charge but, according to The Sun, are moving quickly to appoint a new permanent manager and have made contact with Rodgers.

The report adds the Old Trafford hierarchy would be prepared to pay Leicester £8 million in compensation to lure the 48-year-old away from the King Power Stadium.

Speaking ahead of Leicester's match against Chelsea on Friday, Rodgers said it was 'really disrespectful' to ask him to comment on the rumours linking him with the United job.

'There's two things. Firstly it is really disrespectful to ask the question when you have a manager in place, a good manager and a good man, who is working hard at the club,' he said.

'Secondly I can't really comment on it, because it is not something that is real.

Brendan Rodgers has apparently been approached by Manchester United to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford. Rodgers said speculation linking him with the Manchester United job 'is not real'. PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino is also on United's shortlist to replace Solskjaer. As is former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane, who is apparently not keen on United

'I am here as the Leicester City manager, proud to be here, privileged to be here and fully committed to the players, the club, the ownership.

'That's about it, all the other noise around that is something we can't control.'

By Sunday night, however, bookmakers had installed the former Liverpool boss as the favourite to replace Solskjaer at Old Trafford.

At 7/2 Rodgers led the list of candidates with Betfair, ahead of former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane and PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino, a 5/1 and 6/1 shot respectively.

As reported by Sportsmail, the latter would be ready to quit PSG and return to the Premier League because he is unhappy in the French capital.

The former Tottenham boss is said to be frustrated at managing a dressing-room with big egos like Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe and lives in a hotel in Paris, while his family remain in London.

According to BBC Sport, meanwhile, Zidane 'is not interested in taking over' at Old Trafford, despite being approached by the club.

Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag and former Red Bull Leipzig manager Ralf Rangnick are also thought to be on United's shortlist.

In a statement announcing Solskjaer's departure, United confirmed they were looking to appoint an interim manager until the end of the season. Carrick, however, is expected to take charge of games against Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday and Chelsea in the Premier League four days later.

‘Ole leaves with our sincerest thanks for his tireless efforts as manager and our very best wishes for the future,' the statement read.

'His place in the club’s history will always be secure, not just for his story as a player, but as a great man and a manager who gave us many great moments. He will forever be welcome back at Old Trafford as part of the Manchester United family.

‘Michael Carrick will now take charge of the team for forthcoming games, while the club looks to appoint an interim manager to the end of the season.'

Dimitar Berbatov believes Laurent Blanc could be a good option to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but thinks Mauricio Pochettino will be Manchester United's No 1 choice

* Mauricio Pochettino prepared to quit PSG to join Manchester United mid-season
* Zinedine Zidane couldreplace Pochettino at PSG if Argentine joins United
* United have indicated they want an interim manager until the end of the season
* Former United legend Mark Hughes also considered an option for interim role

Dimitar Berbatov believes Laurent Blanc could be a viable alternative to Mauricio Pochettino as the next Manchester United manager.

The 20-time champions of England are looking to appoint a new permanent boss after sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday following a dismal run of five defeats in the last seven Premier League games.

Pochettino has emerged as the frontrunner but Berbatov, who won two Premier League titles at Old Trafford, believes his former club could turn to one of the Argentine's predecessors at Paris Saint-Germain.

‘Laurent Blanc is an interesting candidate,' he told Betfair.

‘He’s an ex-United player, who won everything, has managed PSG and France, has the respect of the players and he has the charisma and composure required to manage United.’

Blanc played for United for two seasons at the end of his career and won 11 major trophies, including three Ligue 1 titles, during three seasons in charge of PSG.

The Frenchman is currently in charge of Qatar Stars League club Al-Rayyan but has been touted as a potential interim option for United, who have indicated they are looking to appoint a temporary manager to take over from caretaker Michael Carrick.

Dimitar Berbatov believes Laurent Blanc could be a viable alternative to Mauricio Pochettino. The Frenchman played two seasons with Manchester United, winning the league in 2003. Blanc won 11 major trophies in three seasons in charge of PSG, including three league titles

As far as Solskjaer's permanent replacement is concerned, Pochettino appears to be comfortably ahead of other candidates, which include Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers and Ajax manager Erik ten Hag.

As reported by Sportsmail, the Argentine would be ready to quit PSG and return to the Premier League mid-season because he is unhappy in the French capital with former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane reportedly in line to replace him in Paris.

‘It is difficult to see how he [Pochettino] could be appointed at Old Trafford any time soon,’ Berbatov added.

‘The only solution I can see would be if Zinedine Zidane were to go to PSG. If he is open to that then I could see a switch for Pochettino happening soon.

‘That said, there can often be surprises when it comes to appointing managers. When Jose Mourinho was sacked, who thought Solskjaer would succeed him and stay in charge for three years? We’ve been surprised in the past and may be surprised again.

‘Many United fans would be pleased to see Pochettino in charge and I can understand why after his success at Tottenham and his commitment to team-building.’

Default Re: Haruskah Ole dipecat?

Ernesto Valverde has held talks with Manchester United football director John Murtough over interim role - with the former Barcelona boss an option if the club can't prise Mauricio Pochettino away from PSG

* Manchester United have appointed Michael Carrick as an interim coach
* The Old Trafford club sacked Ole Gunnar Solskajer after a 4-1 defeat to Watford
* Club are aiming to prise Mauricio Pochettino away from PSG as their first option
* United have also made contact with Ernesto Valverde as a backup option

Ernesto Valverde is on a shortlist of candidates to become Manchester United's interim manager if they cannot prise Mauricio Pochettino away from Paris Saint-Germain.

Sportsmail revealed that Pochettino is ready to move to Old Trafford immediately as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's replacement, but it's still unclear how much United want the Argentine and how hard PSG would fight to keep him.

United are still working to a plan of installing a temporary boss to take over the reins from caretaker Michael Carrick before making a permanent appointment at the end of the season.

The club have a shortlist of five candidates for the interim job and it emerged on Tuesday evening that former Barcelona coach Valverde is one of the names under consideration.

Valverde is currently out of work after leaving Barca in January 2020 and the 57-year-old Spaniard has held talks with United's football director John Murtough.

Valverde has the advantage of having worked at one of the world's top clubs, but has no Premier League experience despite expressing an interest in coaching in England.

The only time he has worked outside of Spain was two stints at Olimpiacos, and he got the Barcelona job after impressing in the second of two spells at Athletic Bilbao.

Manchester United have begun pursuing Ernesto Valverde for their vacant manager's job. Valverde managed superstar forward Lionel Messi for two-and-a-half seasons at Barcelona. Michael Carrick is in charge as caretaker but United are working for an imminent new arrival. Mauricio Pochettino could beat Valverde to the prestigious role if he's willing to leave PSG

It's believed that Valverde would only be an option for the interim role, and United have other candidates for the summer including Pochettino, Leicester's Brendan Rodgers and Ajax coach Erik ten Hag.

Zinedine Zidane has also been linked but it's understood that he is reluctant to move to Old Trafford and is a more likely replacement for Pochettino at PSG.

It remains to be seen if Pochettino's potential availability could change United's thinking regarding an interim appointment, but news of the Valverde talks would indicate that they are, at the very least, keeping their options open.

Peter Schmeichel backs Steve Bruce for the Manchester United interim job as he claims his former team-mate and recently-axed Newcastle boss would be 'fantastic' for the role

* Peter Schmeichel has backed Steve Bruce for the Manchester United interim job
* Schmeichel wants 'somebody who knows the club' to take charge of United next
* Bruce was axed by Newcastle last month after their dismal start to the season

Peter Schmeichel has backed Steve Bruce to become Manchester United's interim manager and he reckons the former Newcastle boss would be 'fantastic' for the role.

The Red Devils are on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over the weekend following their humiliating 4-1 loss to Watford.

Bruce is reportedly 'very keen' on taking the role on an interim basis and he now has the backing of his former team-mate Schmeichel, who wants 'somebody who knows the club'.

Speaking on CBS Sport, the former United goalkeeper said: 'I just like the idea, if it is an interim, get somebody who knows the club. Get somebody who is known by the club as well.

Steve Bruce (pictured) has been backed to become Manchester United's interim manager. Peter Schmeichel reckons his former team-mate Bruce would make a 'fantastic' appointment

'Somebody like Steve Bruce, that would be fantastic.

'I would love to have somebody who comes in now to put pressure on the players.

'A new voice, get them out there performing. Without making massive changes in style, or system.

'You have to take small steps, you can't just jump straight in and say we are going to play a pressing game.

'You can't do that, the first thing you have to do is give confidence to everybody in the team.'

When asked whether he would take the role himself, Schmeichel replied: 'Of course I would do it. I would do anything for that club. I think Ronaldo would definitely listen to a goalkeeper.'

Bruce was sacked by Newcastle following their winless start to the season. He has managed the likes of Hull City, Sunderland, Birmingham City and Aston Villa in a career that has spanned over 20 years.

Prior to that, he played over 300 games for United between 1987 and 1996 and enjoyed a lot of success alongside Schmeichel himself.

Michael Carrick took charge of the team as they qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 2-0 win over Villarreal.

The likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Zinedine Zidane, Laurent Blanc, Ernesto Valverde and Ralf Rangnick have all been linked with the United vacancy but it still remains to be seen who they will opt for.

Brendan Rodgers dismisses links to the Manchester United job as 'gossip', with the Leicester boss reaffirming his commitment to the club amid the search for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's replacement

* Brendan Rodgers is considered a summer candidate to take over at Man United
* Michael Carrick is in temporary charge after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking
* United hierarchy plan to speak to five interim candidates in the next few weeks
* But Leicester boss has once again distanced himself from Old Trafford links

Brendan Rodgers has reiterated his commitment to Leicester despite ongoing links with the Manchester United job.

Sportsmail understands the former Liverpool boss is being considered as a candidate to succeed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as permanent United boss in the summer.

Michael Carrick has taken over as caretaker manager, while Sportsmail understands the club's hierarchy have named a five-man shortlist to take over as interim boss until May.

But Rodgers - who already denied rumours of moving to United three days before Solskjaer was sacked - once again distanced himself from the Old Trafford links, insisting he accepts the 'gossip' will go on until a full-time manager is named.

'I don't take it as anything,' Rodgers said ahead of Thursday night's Europa League visit of Legia Warsaw.

'It's not real. There's always gossip and that will be there until they appoint a full-time manager. My commitment is to here.

'The culture here is about the development of the players, and that's where I see it, even more so in this period.

Brendan Rodgers has again dismissed links to the Manchester United job as 'gossip'. United are still looking for a permanent manager to succeed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But Foxes boss Rodgers is considered one of the candidates to become the permanent boss. Ayoze Perez insists Leicester's players are not being distracted with the Rodgers talk

'I respect you guys have stories to do and to create a narrative, but that doesn't include me.'

Rodgers was appointed Foxes boss in February 2019, and has helped Leicester to two successive Europa League finishes as well as leading them to their first ever FA Cup success last season.

And forward Ayoze Perez has vowed Leicester's stars are not distracted by speculation linking Rodgers with a move away ahead of Thursday.

'We are not even thinking about that possibility (Rodgers leaving). What he has shown us, he is totally focused on where we can improve,' the Spaniard said.

'We are not thinking about anything else, not him either. We are really focused here.

'He is trying to make us think about the basics (to improve form). You have to try not to overthink and overdo things. We are sure the win is close. We know the importance of tomorrow and we are focused on that.'

Meanwhile at United, Sportsmail understands Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino is still interested in the position but is not convinced they have made a significant approach for him yet.

The ex-Tottenham boss remains United's first-choice to succeed Solskjaer and is ready to quit immediately, but the Ligue 1 giants are determined not to let him leave before the end of the season.

That has led the club to come up with a five-man shortlist to take over from Carrick on an interim basis.

Ralf Rangnick - currently the head of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow - and former Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde are two of the names they will speak to.

The duo will be joined by former Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre and ex-Roma manager Paulo Fonseca, while the list of candidates is completed by Rudi Garcia, who took Lyon to the Champions League semi-finals in 2020.

Sportsmail understands United are not considering the five names on the shortlist as permanent options and believe an interim appointment will bring stability during a chaotic season, before a more long-term process gets underway in the summer.

Sportsmail also understands Steve Bruce's agent has offered his services to United while Unai Emery is another outside candidate.

The not so famous five... Man United will talk to Rangnick, Valverde, Favre, Garcia and Fonseca over becoming interim boss – with PSG determined to keep first choice Mauricio Pochettino

* Manchester United have named a five-man shortlist for their interim boss role
* Ralf Rangnick, Lucien Favre, Ernesto Valverde and Rudi Garcia are on the list
* Former Roma manager Paulo Fonseca will also be considered for the post
* Steve Bruce's agent has also offered his client to the temporary vacancy
* Sportsmail understands no-one on the five-man shortlist is a permanent option
* The Red Devils want only an interim before a long-term decision in the summer

Manchester United will stick to their plan of appointing an interim manager for the rest of the season after accepting it will be too difficult to take Mauricio Pochettino from Paris Saint-Germain now.

Although PSG on Wednesday denied that an official approach for Pochettino has been rejected, Sportsmail understands United have tried to discreetly ascertain through a third party whether a move to install the former Tottenham boss as permanent manager as soon as possible would be a realistic option.

The indications are that PSG would be reluctant to let the Argentine depart mid-season and disrupt their campaign, although he is expected to re-emerge as a leading candidate for the United job in the summer.

Pochettino is known to be interested in the post and was even happy to sign United shirts yesterday at The Lowry Hotel where PSG were staying ahead of their Champions League clash with Manchester City on Wednesday night.

United will now focus on the strategy put in place after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked at the weekend, and step up their search for an interim manager to take over from caretaker Michael Carrick. He steered them into the Champions League last 16 knockout stage on Tuesday night with a 2-0 win at Villarreal.

Former Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde and ex-Lyon coach Rudi Garcia have already held talks with United’s director of football John Murtough. Garcia said: ‘I will say nothing on the subject. I neither confirm nor deny.’

Lokomotiv Moscow’s head of sports and development, Ralf Rangnick, former Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre and ex-Roma boss Paulo Fonseca are among the other names being linked with the temporary role. But sources in Germany said last night that Rangnick is cool on the idea of a short-term stint.

Sportsmail can reveal Ernesto Valverde (L) and Ralf Rangnick (right) are also being discussed

Although committing to two separate managerial appointments is a peculiar strategy, the Old Trafford hierarchy are said to be satisfied that an interim would provide stability and momentum while giving them the freedom to install a permanent replacement at the end of the season.

It also suggests that United know their preferred target will not be available until the summer — whether that is Pochettino or someone else. Ideally, they would have kept Solskjaer in charge until then but United’s alarming dip in form forced the club into a change of plan.

While the search for an interim continues, Carrick is set to stay in charge for Sunday’s trip to Chelsea after winning against Villarreal with goals by Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho.

Ex-Lyon boss Rudi Garcia (left) and Paulo Fonseca (right) are also being considered. United chief Ed Woodward only wants an interim manager before the end of the season

Meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers sought to put an end to speculation linking him with a switch to United, saying on Wednesday that he was committed to developing his Leicester team.

Rodgers, who has been touted as a potential replacement for Solskjaer, said: ‘It’s not real. There’s always gossip and that will be there until they appoint a full-time manager. My commitment is to here (Leicester). The culture here is about the development of the players and that’s where I see it — even more so in this period.’

Rodgers’ Leicester side host Legia Warsaw in the Europa League on Thursday night and sit bottom of Group C after winning only one of their first four games.

Spartak Moscow are top of the group after a 2-1 victory against Napoli.

Default Re: Haruskah Ole dipecat?

Roberto Mancini 'emerges as a SHOCK contender' to become Manchester United's permanent manager next summer despite his past success at fierce rivals City - with Premier League return 'appealing' to the Italy boss

* Manchester United are determined to appoint a permanent boss next summer
* According to reports, they have now identified Roberto Mancini as a candidate
* Mancini memorably won the Premier League with rivals Manchester City in 2012
* The current Italy boss has admirers at Old Trafford despite his history with City

Roberto Mancini is a shock candidate to become Manchester United's permanent manager next summer, according to reports.

Mancini, who memorably led fierce rivals Manchester City to the Premier League title at the expense of United in the 2011-12 season, is said to be one of several bosses under consideration for the role.

Despite currently being in charge of the Italian national team, Mancini has admirers at Old Trafford and a surprise move has not yet been ruled out, The Telegraph claim.

His position at the helm of the Euro 2020 champions will influence whether he is able to take over at United, though, with Italy consigned to the World Cup play-offs next March as they look to secure a spot in Qatar.

However, depending on how this situation develops, United may find themselves able to swoop for Mancini in their hunt to name Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's successor.

The same outlet have also reported that the interest from United may still convince the 57-year-old to join them, even if Italy were to reach next winter's tournament.

Roberto Mancini has emerged as a contender to take over at Manchester United, reports say. Italy boss Mancini is 'committed' to his current role but United's interest might turn his head. The appointment would be controversial in light of Mancini's rich history with Manchester City

Mancini has been described as remaining 'firmly committed' to his role at the helm of his homeland, and his lucrative contract with them runs until 2026.

But a return to Premier League football after eight years away may turn his head, despite his storied history with United's cross-city neighbours.

Indeed, the Red Devils' hierarchy have left Mancini in the running for the vacancy, although a backlash from supporters would be expected in the event of his hiring.

Until the end of the season, United have opted to appoint Ralf Rangnick as their interim manager - and he will remain at the club for a further two years in a consultancy position, meaning he will also advise over his replacement.

For now, there is a delay over Rangnick being able to officially take charge as he continues to wade through problems relating to his work permit.

As a result of the hold-up, Michael Carrick will oversee United's clash against Arsenal later this week, while United work on Rangnick's deal behind the scenes.

It was revealed the 63-year-old does not meet the main requirements for a manager seeking a Governing Body Endorsement, and his case will now be assessed by an independent 'Exceptions Panel' in order to gain his permit from the Home Office.

The rules for a manager coming from the European Union stipulate that the candidate must have 'managed a club in a Top League for the Prescribed Time' - which, in this case, is for two consecutive years, or for three of the previous five.

Staff at United's Carrington training base were told that Rangnick was unlikely to take over until the end of the week.

United will also have one eye on their next major, long-term appointment to fill their vacancy in the dugout.

PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino, Ajax's Erik ten Hag and Leicester coach Brendan Rodgers are among the favourites.

Pochettino, as reported by Sportsmail earlier this month, was open to taking up the job mid-season because he is not satisfied with life in Paris or at his current club.

However, there was no official approach made from United.

Ten Hag is the alternative target for United if Pochettino, their No 1 choice, does not become their new coach next summer.

He is interested in the role, it is understood, and Ajax would not stand in his way if he decides to leave at the end of the season.
