Default Re: Edinson Roberto Cavani Gomez

Ex-Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani is on the brink of joining LaLiga side Valencia as manager Gennaro Gattuso calls the Uruguay veteran 'not a normal player' and hails his 'incredible mentality'

* Edinson Cavani is about to move to LaLiga by joining Valencia on a free transfer
* The striker left Man United when his deal ended at the end of the 2021-22 term
* Valencia manager Gennaro Gattuso is clearly an admirer of the ex-PSG hotshot
* Gattuso praised Cavani's 'incredible mentality' and hailed his technical qualities

Uruguay forward Edinson Cavani is on the brink of making his return to club football following his release by Manchester United when he completes a move to Spanish side Valencia.

Cavani spent almost two years at United before leaving Old Trafford when his contract expired at the end of the 2021/22 season and is now set to join the Liga team as manager Gennaro Gattuso begins his first season in charge.

'When you speak of Cavani, he is not a normal player,' Gattuso said ahead of Valencia's hosting of Atletico Madrid on Monday, adding that club owner Peter Lim has been behind the veteran's arrival.

'He has played at great clubs and at the top level for a long time. He is 35 but he has an incredible mentality.

Valencia manager Gennaro Gattuso has overseen a win and a defeat at the club so far this term. The Spanish side did not have a back-up plan when they chased transfer target Edinson Cavani. Cavani will make Valencia his first club since leaving Man United at the end of last season

'I am speaking about the technical part, not the money — that is not my problem and they are two different things.'

Valencia, who failed to produce a shot on target in their first defeat of the season at Athletic Bilbao on August 21, have beaten Real Sociedad to Cavani's signing by handing him a two-year deal that is twice the length their rivals offered, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer specialist says Cavani is discussing the final parts of the contract and will undergo a medical.

Former Paris Saint-Germain striker Cavani scored 19 goals in 59 appearances for United after moving to the Premier League on transfer deadline day in October 2020, netting 12 times in the top flight.

The Europa League finalist with United in 2021 netted twice in 20 appearances in 2021-22, closing his account with the only goal of the game at home to West Ham in January.

The 2011 Copa America winner lifted the Ligue 1 title six times with PSG and helped the club reach the 2020 Champions League final.

Valencia beat visitors Girona on the opening day of the season and are 14th in LaLiga.

Edinson Cavani insists referee Daniel Siebert should be 'put in JAIL' for his 'errors' in Uruguay's World Cup group stage exit... after punching a VAR monitor following their game with Ghana as they were denied a penalty

* Uruguay crashed out of the World Cup group stage despite beating Ghana
* Edinson Cavani punched a VAR monitor in a furious response to their exit
* Uruguay were denied a penalty which could have seen them reach the last-16
* Cavani says referee Daniel Siebert should be 'put in jail' for his 'errors'

Edinson Cavani has called for referee Daniel Siebert to be 'put in jail' after Uruguay crashed out of the World Cup at the group stage.

The former Manchester United striker was part of the side that beat Ghana 2-0 in their final group game in Qatar - only to crash out as South Korea's 2-1 win over Portugal meant Uruguay needed a third goal to advance.

After the game, Cavani unleashed his anger at Uruguay's early exit on a VAR monitor after they were denied a penalty.

Cavani, in comments to El Larguero, via Marca, is still angry over the nature of their exit at what is likely to be his final World Cup at the age of 35.

Edinson Cavani has commented that referee Daniel Sieberg should be 'put in jail' following Uruguay's World Cup group stage exit. Uruguay were furious with the referee after they crashed out despite a win over Ghana. Cavani was handed a yellow card for his furious protests immediately after Uruguay's exit

He said: 'They have to put him in jail. But if they penalise me for hitting the VAR, the referee, for having taken us out of the World Cup, they have to put him in jail.'

The striker who now plays for Valencia, also argued that Siebert had made 'errors' during the match.

Uruguay's anger was sparked by their belief that they should have been awarded a penalty after a collision between Darwin Nunez and Ghana's Alidu Seidu.

Cavani is hoping to avoid punishment for his protests which included punching a VAR monitor

A flurry of yellow cards were shown by Siebert after the match - including to Cavani who also felt as though he had been denied a penalty.

And it did not stop there, as almost the entire 26-man Uruguay squad chased the referee and his assistants from the pitch and down the tunnel, accompanied by an unrelenting torrent of remonstration.

Cavani punched a VAR monitor knocking it over, while team-mate Jose Maria Gimenez could reportedly get a lengthy ban after elbowing FIFA's competition director in the back of the head.

When asked if he worries that he also faces sanctions after the Ghana game, Cavani said: 'Yes, of course it worries me, because it would be out of competition with my teammates, my club and my team. It worries me.

'But these are things that happen,' he continued. 'But they have to get a little on the footballer's side, not only the referee and others, on the footballer's side to see what has happened, why it has happened and why things have happened the way they have.

'It's okay that we have to maintain a behaviour and so on, but we are human beings and when sometimes the things that happen [on the pitch] are lived with passion and you work so hard to get there and compete and this and the other.

'It may also be that the reaction of a footballer inside can be, not justified, but a little more forgiven.'
