Ajax boss Erik ten Hag 'is now the CLEAR favourite to become Manchester United's new manager' with a second and final round of interviews planned as they FINALLY close in on a long-term successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

* Erik ten Hag has reportedly become the favourite for the Manchester United job
* The in-demand Ajax manager was interviewed by the Red Devils last week
* He faces stiff competition from Mauricio Pochettino for the Red Devils vacancy
* Louis van Gaal this week urged Ten Hag not to take the United manager's job

Erik ten Hag has reportedly emerged as the favourite to become Manchester United's new permanent manager as the club prepares to conduct a second and final round of interviews.

The Ajax boss has been heavily linked to the Old Trafford vacancy in recent weeks and is one of two leading contenders to become the long-term successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The battle for the United job has been centered around Ten Hag and Paris Saint-Germain's Mauricio Pochettino, while Luis Enrique of Spain, Chelsea's Thomas Tuchel and Sevilla's Julen Lopetegui have also been named as possible options.

But The Telegraph report that Ten Hag has moved to the front of the queue for the role and is now the clear favourite to take over this summer.

United have been put under pressure to make a move in recent weeks amid interest in both Ten Hag and Pochettino from other clubs around Europe.

Now they are planning on carrying out one last round of interviews before naming their new manager.

Ajax did give Ten Hag permission to be interviewed by United last week and that the level of compensation required to get him out of Amsterdam - which Sportsmail understands would fall in the region of £4million - is not a problem.

Sky Sports reported this week that since interviewing Ten Hag, as revealed by Sportsmail, Old Trafford chiefs have been conducting 'due diligence' on the Ajax boss, including discovering the compensation requited to prise him from the Amsterdam club.

Ten Hag has led Ajax to two Eredivisie and KNVB Cup doubles and his side are currently two points ahead in the title race with PSV Eindhoven with seven games to go.

Ajax also have to navigate a KNVB Cup final against PSV on April 17.

However, it's also reported that Ten Hag's camp harbour concerns that United are worried he does not have the experience to overhaul the club's fortunes.

But United's recent decisions to hire Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho - two managers with vast football experience - backfired and Ten Hag has proven himself to be a winner in Holland.

Erik ten Hag has reportedly emerged as the favourite to become Manchester United manager. Sportsmail revealed Ajax boss ten Hag had an interview with United on Monday, although he is not the first candidate to hold formal discussions with new chief executive Richard Arnold. Ten Hag has impressed at Ajax and been linked to several jobs across Europe

Van Gaal this week urged Ten Hag not to even consider taking the United manager's job, warning they are more of a business than a football club.

The Dutch veteran - sacked by United hours after lifting the FA Cup in 2016 - told his fellow Dutchman to look elsewhere for his next job.

'Erik ten Hag is a great manager and that's good for Manchester United, but Manchester United are a commercial club,' Van Gaal said.

'I'm not going to advise him but he should choose a football club, not a commercial one.'

It's claimed the club have spoken to one other contender in recent weeks - outside of Pochettino and Ten Hag - but it is not Enrique or Lopetegui.

The Red Devils were urged to take advantage of Chelsea's precarious financial situation owing to the UK government's sanctions imposed on owner Roman Abramovich by making a move for Tuchel.

However, the German is thought to want to stay at Stamford Bridge but his job could become uncertain when Chelsea's new owners arrive.

PSG are willing to let Pochettino go after an underwhelming spell in the French capital that saw him miss out on the Ligue 1 title last season and fail in their bid to win the Champions League this time around - even after signing Lionel Messi.

Pochettino and his staff are due to be paid up to €20million (£17m) in compensation should he be sacked by the French giants. But PSG will not expect any form of payment should United make a move for him.

PSG are holding out for Zinedine Zidane to become their new coach this summer, although there is concern he is eyeing the France national team job when Didier Deschamps departs after the Qatar World Cup.

Manchester United 'consider hiring STEVE McCLAREN as Erik ten Hag's Old Trafford No 2' - with the former England manager having worked with the Ajax boss at Twente, 13 years ago - as a way to combat his lack of experience in the Premier League

* Erik ten Hag was Steve McClaren's assistant manager at Twente for a season
* McClaren was Sir Alex Ferguson's No 2 for three seasons at Manchester United
* Ten Hag is a leading candidate to become the Red Devils' new boss this summer

Manchester United could be reunited with Steve McClaren as their assistant manager with the ex-England boss reportedly lined up to be Erik ten Hag's No 2 if he takes the Old Trafford hotseat.

According to the Guardian, McClaren is under consideration to be prospective manager Ten Hag's assistant if he is appointed as their new man in the dugout for next season.

The pair know each other well with Ten Hag having been McClaren's assistant for the 2008-09 season at Dutch outfit Twente.

It was McClaren's first campaign within Dutch football and the potential role reversal at United would be Ten Hag's first foray within the English game too.

Erik ten Hag (left) could hire Steve McClaren as his assistant boss if he gets the Man United job. Ten Hag was McClaren's assistant manager at Dutch outfit Twente during the 2008-09 season

McClaren and Ten Hag worked successfully together during that sole season, with Twente finishing second in the Eredivisie. Ten Hag left that summer and McClaren steered the Dutch side to their only top-flight title that following term.

A move to Old Trafford would be McClaren's second spell at the club, having been legendary figure Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant between 1999 and 2001. The now 60-year-old's first campaign coincided with their iconic Treble-winning haul.

Speaking about Ten Hag's qualities, McClaren was effusive about what the 52-year-old would bring to Old Trafford.

'His great strength lies not just in his attention to detail and organisation,' he told The Telegraph.

'He has a clear philosophy of how he wants to play football; the environment he wants to create. The player progression programme was a key part of Twente. He has done that at Ajax too, for each player from the academy to the first team.

'You look at Hakim Ziyech and now the [Brazilian] striker Antony, a very good player who will be the next one to go. I have seen this Ajax team and it's very good. Erik is very disciplined and people have to buy into that and have that work ethic.

'Tactically he's outstanding. He worked with Pep [Guardiola] at Bayern Munich and took in his philosophy too. They called him "Mini Pep" out there. He's ready. A lot of top clubs in Germany and England will be out to get him.'

As detailed by Sportsmail on Monday, United have been informed leading managerial candidate Ten Hag will be available for as little as £1.6million compensation this summer.

The current Ajax coach is one of the leading candidates to become the Old Trafford club's next full-time boss at the end of the season.

Ten Hag is one of the leading candidates to become Manchester United's next manager. United chiefs made enquiries as to how much it will cost to release Ten Hag from his contract. Ten Hag could take over from interim boss Ralf Rangnick at Old Trafford this summer

And it is understood United chiefs made enquiries as to how much it will cost to release Ten Hag from his contract from the Amsterdam club.

Those conversations are understood to have taken place at the end of last week.

It is believed Ajax would be due €2m (£1.6m) for Ten Hag, who signed a new two-year contract with the Dutch club last summer.

However, Ajax would also demand compensation for any staff Ten Hag decides to bring with him from Amsterdam which would push the total package closer to the £2mi mark.

The comparatively small compensation fee to lure Ten Hag would not prove preventative for United should they decide the 52-year-old is the man they want to replace interim boss Ralf Rangnick ahead of next season.

But while, United's interest in Ten Hag is concrete having held formal talks with the highly-rated coach last month, the Premier League club are determined to complete a thorough recruitment process before deciding on their first-choice candidate.

Mauricio Pochettino is the other main contender to take the helm at United this summer.

The Paris Saint-Germain boss is expected to leave the French club at the end of the season regardless of how their campaign ends, with Zinedine Zidane and Antonio Conte among the managers interesting the Ligue 1 side.

Pochettino's experience of the Premier League with Tottenham and Southampton could yet give him the advantage in the race.

But United will hold an extra round of talks with the candidates before moving to appoint their next boss.

Manchester United are CLOSE to appointing Erik ten Hag as their new permanent manager after holding formal talks with Ajax over the Dutchman's release from his contract

* Manchester United are 'close' to appointing Erik ten Hag as their new boss
* The Premier League club have held formal talks with Ajax on Ten Hag's release
* He is now looking likely to beat PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino to the United job

Manchester United are closing in on a deal to make Ajax’s Erik ten Hag their new manager.

Talks have been held with the Dutch club to establish the terms for Ten Hag’s release as United take a significant step towards appointing the 52-year-old.

Those discussions took place at the end of last week and indicate that United are now ready to press ahead with bringing in Ten Hag, whose Ajax contract expires at the end of next season.

The compensation payment for Ten Hag would be just over £1.6million — significantly less than Paris Saint-Germain’s demand to release the other main candidate for the role, Mauricio Pochettino.

Erik ten Hag is 'close' to being appointed as Manchester United's new permanent manager. Ten Hag is set to beat Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino to the job. Ten Hag is now set to take over from interim boss Ralf Rangnick at Old Trafford this summer

Sportsmail exclusively revealed Ten Hag was a leading contender for the job in November, before breaking the news of his interview for the post last month.

United’s process to choose Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s permanent successor has been described as ‘advanced’, although club sources stressed on Wednesday night that they are yet to reach a definitive decision on the new boss.

They do have a call to make on the timing of their announcement, given Ten Hag’s job at Ajax and his workload until the end of the season.

Ajax are four points clear of PSV Eindhoven at the top of the Dutch league and United want to be respectful. Unveiling Ten Hag before the Eredivisie title race has been concluded could be seen as disruptive.

Equally, Ten Hag may view persistent rumours about his future as a distraction to his players and instead prefer a quick announcement.

Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui is now seen as a distant outsider for the United post, while there were clear pitfalls with appointing Luis Enrique, given the former Barcelona boss is taking charge of Spain at the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

Pochettino, who like Ten Hag has 12 months remaining on his contract, has long had admirers at Old Trafford but the Paris Saint-Germain job has proved to be a tough assignment.

The Ligue 1 leaders were embarrassingly dumped out of the Champions League at the first knockout stage last month.

United realise there is a need to reshape their squad, with question marks over the futures of many first-team players.

Ten Hag was not the only candidate to raise the issue of recruitment with United’s hierarchy in the interview process and there is a recognition the new boss will require significant backing in the transfer market.

An England Euro 2020 midfield, an Ajax centre-back following the boss to Old Trafford but no changes at full-back... how Manchester United could line-up under Erik ten Hag next season with Dutchman closing in on move

* Manchester United are closing in on appointing Erik ten Hag as new manager
* Talks have been held with Ajax to establish the terms for Ten Hag's release
* Dutchman will likely have to oversee squad overhaul at Old Trafford this summer
* Here, Sportsmail looks at how United could line-up in 2022-23 under 52-year-old

With Manchester United close to appointing Erik ten Hag as their next permanent manager, the focus will soon turn to the summer and how the Dutchman can improve the squad.

The Red Devils have underachieved in what will be another trophyless season and are up against it in their battle to qualify for next season's Champions League.

The current Ajax boss is therefore likely to have to oversee an overhaul of the squad, with key areas needing significant investment and many stars names potentially on their way out of Old Trafford.

United scouts were at La Ceramica stadium on Wednesday night to watch Villarreal goalscorer Arnaut Danjuma against Bayern Munich, and a whole host of names have also been linked with summer moves to United.

Here, Sportsmail looks at how United could-line up next season under the 52-year-old, who is now set to be named Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's long-term replacement.

GOALKEEPER

Man United may be looking at upheaval in plenty of areas but David de Gea is likely to keep his position as No 1 under ten Hag.

Trevor Sinclair insisted the Spain international should be ditched by the club because he is 'not good enough with his feet'.

But de Gea is still putting in commendable performance as a shot stopper in the United goal and has kept the score down at times this season.

A leader in the dressing room and also one of the longest-serving players, in a summer which will see plenty of change, they would be wise to stick with a player in a position which should not be a priority this summer.

There may well be a change at No 2 though with Dean Henderson's future uncertain, and RB Salzburg goalkeeper Philipp Kohn has reportedly been identified as the man to give de Gea competition.

Spain international David de Gea is likely to continue as United's No 1 goalkeeper next season

DEFENCE

The back four will be a key area to address in the summer window with the likes of captain Harry Maguire having come under intense scrutiny this season following a number of errors.

Sportsmail revealed last month the club are planning to sign a world-class centre-back, and while Jurrien Timber may not yet fall into that category, reports in Holland have linked the Ajax defender with following ten Hag to Old Trafford.

He would likely partner Raphael Varane, who was signed just last summer from Real Madrid but has had an indifferent first season in English football.

Maguire would therefore drop to the bench and join fellow centre-back Victor Lindelof on it, while Wan-Bissaka and Alex Telles could continue to be on standby in the full-back positions.

Reports in Holland suggest Jurrien Timber could follow ten Hag to Old Trafford this summer

MIDFIELD

The partnership in central midfield between Fred and Scott McTominay has never convinced the majority of the Man United fanbase, while £89million signing Paul Pogba is set to end a second stint at United by leaving on a free transfer.

Nemanja Matic is the other current option but turns 34 next season, but there have been plenty of names linked which will be familiar.

The Telegraph are reporting ten Hag's summer warchest will include the funds to sign £150m-rated West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, while the Manchester Evening News also report that United are working on a deal to sign Leeds' Kalvin Phillips.

The pair shone for England at Euro 2020 as a midfield partnership as Gareth Southgate's men reached the final, and United could look to them to add stability to their central midfield.

The one who may be hard done by if the England duo are signed is Brazilian Fred, who has excelled in an underperforming side in recent weeks, but he takes up a position on the bench in this squad.

England stars Kalvin Phillips (left) and Declan Rice (R) are believed to be midfield targets

FORWARDS

Again there are plenty of doubts over current options, with veterans Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani among the favourites to leave.

Marcus Rashford is also considering his future at the club, while fringe players like Jesse Lingard could also leave.

But Sportsmail understands United scouts were in attendance to watch former Bournemouth star Arnaut Danjuma score the only goal of the game for Villarreal in their Champions League quarter-final first leg win against Bayern Munich.

United scouts watched Arnaut Danjuma score the winner for Villarreal against Bayern Munich

Bruno Fernandes was handed a new £240,000-per-week contract until 2026 last week, and even though some reports suggest ten Hag is keen to try and revive fellow Dutchman Donny van de Beek's Old Trafford career, the Portuguese is likely to start as the attacking midfielder.

Jadon Sancho will also hope to add more consistency to his game and become United's undisputed left winger ahead of Anthony Elanga in his second season.

But a centre-forward is likely to be a priority and The Telegraph claim Tottenham and England star Harry Kane is a top target.

Kane was heavily linked with a move to Manchester City last summer but Spurs managed to resist their interest and kept hold of him. Whether he wants to leave now Antonio Conte is at the club remains to be seen, plus Daniel Levy is thought to have slapped a £100million price tag on his star man.

Reports suggest Tottenham and England striker Harry Kane (left) is also a top target

BENCH

With five substitutes set to be allowed in the Premier League next season, nine replacements will be allowed next season.

Philipp Kohn, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Alex Telles, Fred/Scott McTominay, Anthony Elanga, Donny van de Beek, Marcus Rashford

The ball-playing centre-back Man United desperately need... or a midfield 'butcher' who won't shirk a tackle? Versatile £55m signing Lisandro Martinez offers Erik ten Hag options, and it could be Maguire or Varane who makes way

* Manchester United have agreed the £55m signing of Ajax's Lisandro Martinez
* Erik ten Hag knows the Argentine well from their time together in Amsterdam
* He was originally a defensive midfielder with an uncompromising reputation
* But he was converted into a centre-back with composure and aerial ability
* There are hints Ten Hag intends to play him alongside Harry Maguire in defence
* But he could slot into midfield if United don't land Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong

After a somewhat sluggish start, the first phase of Erik ten Hag's Manchester United revolution is finally gathering momentum.

The new manager will feel a whole lot better to get some fresh faces through the door at Old Trafford, with Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen signed, sealed and delivered.

And the latest acquisition sees Lisandro Martinez come in from Ten Hag's former club Ajax, in a deal that will ultimately cost United £55.3million.

It's a smart move. Not only is the Argentina international well accustomed to the demands of Ten Hag from their time together in Amsterdam, he offers United plenty of versatility.

capture
Manchester United have secured the £55million signing of Lisandro Martinez from Ajax - reuniting the Argentine with his former coach Erik ten Hag. Martinez, 24, offers versatility and can play at centre-back, left-back and defensive midfield

Martinez, 24, can play as a central defender, a left-back or as a defensive midfielder, with experience of playing in the 4-3-3 or 3-5-2 formations that the coach favours.

Ten Hag knew when he started the job that central defence and defensive midfield were the most pressing problems to solve in a United team that performed well below the expected standards last season.

Martinez may not cure all ills but Ten Hag will feel much better to have him on board. It's unlikely to change the situation with Frenkie de Jong, however, who was always his No 1 target for the summer.

Although United and Barcelona have agreed a £71.5m fee for the Dutch midfielder, De Jong is reluctant to give up Champions League football at the Nou Camp, even when being shunted towards the exit door.

So where will Martinez fit into Ten Hag's plans for United and what will the new boy offer them?

NEW PARTNER FOR MAGUIRE OR VARANE AT CENTRE-HALF

The most likely scenario is that Martinez joins United's pool of centre-halves.

Ten Hag typically deployed a 4-3-3 shape during his time managing Ajax, with Martinez partnering Jurrien Timber, another United target this summer, at centre-back in the majority of games.

But the evidence of United's two pre-season friendlies so far is that Ten Hag will set them out in their familiar 4-2-3-1 and given this has delivered 4-0 and 4-1 wins, it isn't likely to change soon.

So Martinez is likely to be paired with either captain Harry Maguire or Raphael Varane at the back.

Captain Harry Maguire may be sweating on his place with a new central defender coming in

Those three will be the favoured centre-backs, in whatever combination, with Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly dropping down the defensive pecking order given lingering doubts about their abilities.

Varane's various injury issues prevented him playing as much as he would have liked during his first season at United but there were some encouraging signs when he played alongside Maguire.

But one of them would have to make way for Martinez to come in, with the new arrival offering a point of difference in that he's left-footed.

Martinez is comfortable on the ball and adept at passing out of defence, skills that were mandatory at Ten Hag's Ajax, and despite being only 5ft 9in is very strong aerially.

He is the kind of character who will relish the physical battles that are part of the job description in English football and knows exactly what his manager will be demanding of him.

How Man United could potentially line up in the coming season with Martinez in defence

The key question is who makes way to accommodate Martinez. Ten Hag has already made clear his faith in Maguire as his captain despite the England defender's poor form last season.

Maguire also usually plays on the left of the two, with Varane or Lindelof on the right, and that's where Martinez would want to be.

However, in Friday's friendly win over Melbourne Victory, Maguire and Lindelof swapped positions. It could be a subtle hint from Ten Hag that Martinez is going to line up alongside Maguire as the first-choice pairing.

That will no doubt annoy Varane, who didn't get chance to fully show his class during a turbulent first season.

But, in reality, all will get plenty of opportunities given the inevitable injuries and suspensions, not to mention the sheer weight of games with United slogging through the Europa League again in the season ahead.

Raphael Varane struggled with injury problems during his first season at Old Trafford. Victor Lindelof will drop down the pecking order having featured regularly last season

THREE'S A CROWD AT THE BACK?

This raises the possibility of Ten Hag setting United up with three central defenders, making space for Martinez, Maguire and Varane in whatever combination.

It's not something he favoured at Ajax but may be considered if United make a sluggish start to the Premier League season or simply as a back-up plan.

It would involve repurposing Luke Shaw as a left wing-back - as he played for England during some of Euro 2020 - or playing new boy Malacia in the role, and getting more attacking gains out of Aaron Wan-Bissaka or Diogo Dalot.

Such a move would offer reassurance for Maguire, who is used to playing that way for England and also would have the insurance of two other defenders if he wanted to dribble the ball out.

Martinez's composure as a ball-playing central defender will be an asset for United

But switching to this system would require a whole lot of work on the training ground.

Last season, Ralf Rangnick decided to rip up United's usual game plan and play a 5-3-2 against Liverpool at Anfield, with a back line of Dalot, Maguire, Jones, Lindelof and Wan-Bissaka (on the left). United lost 4-0.

It won't come naturally to United's players and so isn't the most likely option - at least not initially.

A 'BUTCHER' IN MIDFIELD

When Martinez arrived at Ajax in 2019 from the Argentine club Defensa y Justicia, he was a midfielder and Ten Hag intended for him to replace De Jong, who'd just joined Barcelona.

The coach wanted Martinez to be his midfield 'brain', playing the neat passes that keep Ajax ticking over. But there was plenty of brawn as well.

Martinez was nicknamed the 'Butcher of Amsterdam' for his uncompromising tackles and South American passion.

As he has said in the past: 'I am called the carnicero - the Butcher - of Amsterdam.

'We Argentines do everything with passion and when I go out on the pitch I fight for every ball. If I have to step over dead bodies, I do it.

'I want to win every 50-50 situation because I know that I am fighting for food for every member of my family and for my friends.

'That is the feeling I have - and every Argentinian has. It is the kind of motivation I cannot explain.'

However, he didn't always find it easy at Ajax. It took him some time to adjust to the 'Ajax way' of football.

'In the first three weeks, I had a horrible time. It is totally different, another intensity,' he told La Nacion in 2020.

'At first I wanted to go home and cry. I felt bad.

'I am a player who likes to have the ball, but when they played me with one or two touches, they killed me.'

How United could line-up if Martinez is deployed as a holding midfielder by Erik ten Hag. Martinez has played in midfield for Ajax and would feel comfortable there for United

He did eventually get up to speed in midfield but would be converted into a centre-half later in his time at Ajax.

Martinez has said in the past he would be open to returning to a midfield role if required. This is more likely if United fail in their pursuit of De Jong.

They only have Scott McTominay and Fred as established names in defensive midfield and so Martinez could be a third option. This would also solve the central defensive dilemma.

But Ten Hag is a stubborn man and, having put De Jong top of his shopping list because he's so important to how he wants to play, he will expect the deal to be done.

BACK-UP ON THE LEFT

In another sign of how versatile he is, Martinez did on occasion play at left-back for Ajax.

But given United have Shaw, Malacia and also Alex Telles in that position, they should be well-stocked unless there's a freak injury crisis.

However, it's peace of mind for Ten Hag to know he has someone who can fit in there.
