Manchester United target Mats Hummels says he is staying at Borussia Dortmund

In-demand Germany defender Mats Hummels will stay with Borussia Dortmund for another year but offered no assurances about his long-term future.

The 26-year-old World Cup winner has been linked heavily with a move to the Premier League with Manchester United and admitted to being flattered by the interest.

But having seen a number of team mates, such as Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski, leave the club in recent seasons, Hummels was not ready to depart Dortmund yet.

'There have always been rumours about almost every one of our players, but I decided not to make the move this year,' Hummels told reporters in Singapore on Wednesday ahead of a pre-season friendly over the Malaysian border on Thursday.

'Of course when the big clubs are interested, and Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world, it's an honour. But I decided I wanted to stay here.'

Hummels, who begun his career with Bayern Munich, has another two years left on his contract with Dortmund, who are now coached by Thomas Tuchel after Jurgen Klopp stepped down last season.

Singapura - Bek Borussia Dortmud Mats Hummels memberikan penegasan terkait spekulasi masa depannya. Pemain 26 tahun itu akan bertahan di Dortmund, setidaknya untuk musim ini.

Masa depan Hummels di Signal Iduna Park belakangan santer dispekulasikan. Apalagi ia sudah cukup sering dihubung-hubungkan dengan sejumlah klub, salah satunya Manchester United.

Pada bulan Mei lalu Direktur Olahraga Dortmund Michael Zorc sudah menyatakan keyakinan kalau Hummels akan bertahan di klub tersebut menyusul pembahasan dengan pemain bersangkutan. Hummels kini mengonfirmasi hal tersebut.

"Ketika sebuah klub macam Manchester United dikaitkan dengan dirimu, itu merupakan sebuah hal bagus dan juga kebanggaan. Tapi tahun ini aku memutuskan bertahan," kata Hummels seperti dikutip Soccerway.

Pun demikian, pemain jebolan akademi Bayern Munich yang mulai berseragam Dortmund sejak 2008 tersebut mengaku belum punya rencana jangka panjang, membuat kemungkinan pindah di masa depan masih tetap terbuka.

"Aku sudah berada di Dortmund untuk waktu lama, aku belum menentukan batasnya. Sulit dikatakan apa yang akan terjadi di masa depan, tapi aku masih ada di sini setelah tujuh tahun," tutur Hummels.

Mats Hummels looks set to leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season with Bayern Munich joining top Premier League clubs in the race to sign the defender.

The 27-year-old, who has long been on the shopping list of Europe's elite sides, unleashed a new wave of speculation about his future after giving an emotional interview on Wednesday night.

'I've set myself a date by which I have to decide (about my future),' Hummels told Sky Sports Germany after his side's German Cup semi-final victory over Hertha Berlin. 'It's a very difficult decision for me. I'm losing about half an hour's sleep every night just thinking about it.'

'When I finally make my decision, people will see why it has been so difficult,' he added.

Hummels' contract expires in 2017, meaning Dortmund would have to sell him this summer if he does not extend his contract, or risk losing him on a free transfer.

Premier League clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United have made no secret of their interest in Hummels, while the World Cup winner has been frequently linked to Barcelona in recent years.

It is Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, however, who have emerged as surprising new front runners in the race for Hummels' signature.

Speaking to SportBild, Hummels' father and agent Hermann said that he wouldn't rule out a move to Bayern.

'This is one of the biggest decisions of Mats' career,' said Hummels senior. 'It is a bit like when a woman reaches 30 and must decide whether or not to have children. If he does leave, it will only be for one of the top five or six clubs in Europe. Bayern are obviously one of those.'

The admission came as a huge shock. Hummels spent 13 years at Bayern, emerging from the youth system and making his Bundesliga debut under Ottmar Hitzfeld. He left for Dortmund in 2008, seeing only limited prospects in Munich.

Back in 2012, Hummels categorically ruled out a return to his former club. His emotional attachment to Bayern seemed to be ended for good when they sacked his father after 17 years of service as a youth coach.

Now, though, Hummels Snr is speaking candidly of a move to back to Munich. Bayern would certainly jump at the opportunity. They are in need of another, world-class centre-back, and the loss of Hummels is recognised internally as one of the biggest mistakes the club has ever made.

'We should never have let him go,' admitted long-serving coach Hermann Gerland in 2010, as the club spent several years attempting to get Hummels back.

Bayern risk entering into a bidding war with the Premier League elite if they do attempt to sign Hummels. The defender refused to countenance a buyout clause when he signed his current contract in 2012.

That means that Dortmund are, in theory, able to ask for any price they see fit. With several bidders, the eventual fee would almost certainly be above the £30million mark.

Dortmund, though, will fight tooth and nail to persuade Hummels to stay at the Signal-Iduna-Park. That much was made clear by chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke this week.

'I will fight to keep Mats,' said Watzke on Wednesday. 'I'll fight more than I've ever fought for any other player.'

FC Bayern München, World Cup winner Mats Hummels (27) and Borussia Dortmund have agreed terms bringing the defender to FCB for the start of the 2016/17 season. Hummels, who grew up in Munich and is a product of the club’s youth academy, will undergo the obligatory pre-transfer medical in Munich before signing a five-year contract binding him to the German champions until 30 June 2021.

“We are delighted that Mats Hummels has decided in favour of FC Bayern,” commented FC Bayern München AG chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “Mats is one of the best centre-backs in the world. With him we will increase the quality in our team even further.”

The player joins FC Bayern for an undisclosed fee.

Mats Hummels claims he discounted a move to Manchester United because of the club's failure to qualify for the Champions League.

On the same day United lost their penultimate Premier League match of the season at West Ham in May to all but consign them to Europa League football next season, Bayern Munich confirmed the signing of Hummels from Borussia Dortmund.

United had enquired about signing Hummels from Dortmund in 2014 - when they could not offer any European football - but after the Germany defender endured a dismal 2014-15 campaign they made no approach to sign him, even though Dortmund had failed to qualify for the Champions League and United had.

Louis van Gaal settled on Daley Blind as his ball-playing centre-back after Sergio Ramos signed a new Real Madrid contract last year and Hummels hinted he would have been receptive to joining United before he became the latest Dortmund star to move to Bundesliga champions Bayern.

"Fundamentally, England, Spain and Germany were the relevant leagues I could see myself playing football in," Hummels told Suddeutsche Zeitung. "But at this stage there just was not that one English club where the overall package was fitting.

"The overall package means: a club which fascinates me; a club I have always wanted to join, and where the sporting constellation is right, and which of course plays Champions League football next season. And because of the latter one club was ruled out, and you can envision which club that was."

Sir Alex Ferguson scouted Hummels, Shinji Kagawa and Robert Lewandowski in Dortmund's 2012 German Cup final thrashing of Bayern Munich but retired the following year.

Bayern previously signed Mario Gotze and Lewandowski from Dortmund in recent years before Hummels' move.

Van Gaal's successor Jose Mourinho moved to bolster his defensive options by forking out £30million on Villarreal's Eric Bailly.

The Portuguese tactician's move for Dortmund's Henrikh Mkhitaryan is in doubt as United fear the German side will not let another star player leave Signal Iduna Park following Hummels and Ilkay Gundogan's departures.
