JUAN MATA heads to Old *Trafford on Sunday dreaming of meeting one of Manchester United’s all-time greats.

Chelsea’s £24m summer signing from Valencia idolised golden oldie Ryan Giggs when he was growing up in Spain.

Now he could be playing against the winger, 37, who rolled back the years with another stunning goal in the Champions League on Wednesday.

[b]Mata said: “When I was growing up, I had many idols, like Dennis Bergkamp and Gianfranco Zola. But Ryan Giggs was an inspiration to me.

“I think he showed what he’s worth with that goal. He’s one of the best *wingers ever. Perhaps I noticed Giggs because he plays in the same position as me. He was incredibly impressive, with his tackling, dribbling and general style.”

Mata ended up playing with another United great at Real Madrid, where he impressed in the reserves but never quite cracked the first team.

He said: “I was there with David *Beckham. My sister Paula, who was in Brighton at the time, liked him so I asked for his shirt and he gave it to me.”

Mata will no doubt ask to swap shirts with Giggs after Sunday’s showdown, but he knows the size of the task facing *Chelsea. He said: “Obviously they are *doing really well.

“They have won all their games and are real *contenders.

“I went to Old Trafford with Valencia when we drew there in the Champions League and it was very impressive.

“But we’re just starting the season. They’ve had a strong start but we’re *closing the gap. It’s only two points, which we can recover quite easily.”

Veteran Giggs urges United youngsters to take their chance in Carling Cup clash

Ryan Giggs believes it is time for the latest batch of youngsters to roll off the Manchester United production line to make their mark.
Much has already been made of the youthfulness of United's first team squad this season.
But Phil Jones was bought in from Blackburn, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling were already regulars with Sir Alex Ferguson's senior squad, while Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck had furthered their educations with spells away from United on loan.
With injuries starting to affect his squad, Ferguson may end up using more kids than he initially imagined in tomorrow night's Carling Cup third round tie at local rivals Leeds.
Strangely, Giggs may be there as well to lend a hand. Michael Owen, Park Ji-sung, Fabio, Antonio Valencia, Federico Macheda and Mame Biram Diouf are others who need a game and the same was also true of Dimitar Berbatov before Javier Hernandez's injury in yesterday's 3-1 win over Chelsea shunted the Bulgarian up the striking roster.
So, Ferguson must decide how many youngsters to expose in a game where the atmosphere in the stands is expected to be distinctly frosty.
However, Giggs believes it is how the likes of Paul Pogba and Will Keane come through such tests that will determine whether they make it to the top of their chosen careers.
'There are young players coming through at United but this is an important part of their career,' Giggs told MUTV.
When you look at the lads who came through in my age group, then those who followed; Wes Brown and John O'Shea for instance, when they got their chance, they took it.
'Once you hit 17, 18 and 19, that is what you have to do.

'It doesn't matter whether it is if you get a chance to train with the first team, or in a match as a substitute, you need to make an impact.
'You need to force the manager not leave you out of the next game.'
The initial quest will be to secure a place in the fourth round to give themselves another opportunity to play.
Welbeck, currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, is the most obvious example of someone how it is possible to profit from United's progress.
He was handed starting spots in both the 2009 Carling Cup final win over Tottenham and the same season's FA Cup semi-final defeat to Everton, providing invaluable experience.
And it is that exposure to combat at the highest level that Giggs, now in his 22nd season as a professional, feels will determine whether United's current crop fulfil the potential they showed in winning last season's FA Youth Cup.
'It is tough because there is a lot of quality in the first team,' said the Welshman.
'The majority have the quality. That is not really in doubt. 'The question is, do they have the desire and appetite to take it up a step more?'

There are only three current players in the starting XI, with the remainder being dominated by the successful AC Milan and Real Madrid teams of past generations

Current players Lionel Messi, Ryan Giggs and Clarence Seedorf have made French newspaper L'Equipe's all-time top Champions League team.

The remainder of the starting XI is comprised of former greats, with everyone in the side having won Europe's top club competition at least twice.

Between the sticks the publication have selected Sepp Maier, who triumphed in the tournament three years running between 1974 and 1976 with Bayern Munich.

A back four of Liverpool's Phil Neal, German legend Franz Beckenbauer and AC Milan duo Paolo Maldini and Franco Baresi make the grade ahead of stiff competition.

The three men still active in the game are joined by Johan Cruyff in midfield, who picked up three winner's medals with Ajax in the 1970s.

In attack, five-times winner and Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano is paired with Marco van Basten, who lifted the trophy twice with AC Milan.

Team in full: Maier (Bayern) - Neal (Liverpool), Baresi (AC Milan), Beckenbauer (Bayern), Maldini (AC Milan) - Seedorf (Ajax, AC Milan, Real Madrid) - Messi (Barcelona), Cruyff (Ajax), Giggs (Manchester United) - Di Stefano (Real Madrid), van Basten (AC Milan).

Belakangan ini muncul banyak kritik yang menilai bahwa pemain berusia 33 tahun ini sudah melewati periode terbaiknya. Menyusul start musim yang lambat dari Lampard.

"Di usia 25, Anda tidak akan memahami itu, Anda cuma punya satu pertandingan buruk. Tapi di usia 30 tahun, ditambah Anda terlalu tua. Satu-satunya cara untuk menjauhkan kritik itu adalah terus bermain bagus. Itu lah mengapa (Ryan) Giggs bermain dengan nyaman hingga berusia 37 tahun - karena dia konsisten tampil bagus," demikian Lampard.
