Arsenal fear Olivier Giroud will miss three months with broken foot, as Gunners weigh up swoop for Loic Remy

* Olivier Giroud went down injured against Everton on Saturday
* A first scan was inconclusive, so the Frenchman will be tested again
* Arsenal fear the striker may have broken his foot
* A period out for Giroud could force Arsenal to sign QPR's Loic Remy
* Giroud is Arsenal's first-choice striker, and will certainly miss the crunch Champions League qualifier against Besiktas on Wednesday
* Forward Lukas Podolski was set to leave the club, but may now stay

Arsenal have been left sweating on the fitness of Olivier Giroud after the striker was sent for a second ankle scan.

Manager Arsene Wenger may be forced to revive his interest in Loic Remy or scrap the £10million sale of Lukas Podolski if the French international striker is ruled out for any length of time.

Giroud, who sustained the injury during the closing stages of Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Everton, originally believed he could be fit for Wednesday’s make-or-break Champions League qualifier against Besiktas.

Crocked: Olivier Giroud went down against Everton and he will have a second scan on his injured ankle

Reinforcements: Arsene Wenger may make a move for Loic Remy to replace the injured Giroud

But Sportsmail understands the 27-year-old will miss at least the next two weeks, putting him out of the clash against Slaven Bilic’s side and Sunday’s visit to Leicester, and there are even fears he has suffered a broken foot, which would rule him out for months rather than weeks.

An initial scan failed to clear up the extent of the damage and Giroud was sent for a second examination after the inflammation of the joint had fully subsided.

A long term lay-off for Giroud, the club’s first-choice striker, would leave the club desperately short of centre-forward options and force Wenger’s hand in the transfer market.

If the Frenchman is sidelined for a sustained period of time, then Wenger could revive their interest in Queens Park Rangers striker Loic Remy.

The striker was close to joining the Gunners earlier this summer, with the north London club willing to meet his £8.5million release clause.

But Arsenal’s refusal to match his £90,000-per-week wage demands saw the deal fall through.

Giroud’s injury could also force the club into a rethink over Lukas Podolski’s future.

On his way? Lukas Podolski (right) was thought to be leaving Arsenal, but an injury to Giroud could see him stay

The Germany international wanted to leave the club in search of first-team football, and Wenger has given him the green light to depart so long as a club meets his £10million asking price.

But a serious injury to Giroud could yet see Podolski, who is wanted by Juventus, Wolfsburg and Galatasary, stay at the Emirates Stadium.

The club were faced with a similar scenario last season when dealing with Jack Wilshere’s broken foot.

Following a 50/50 challenge with Daniel Agger while playing for England in March, the midfielder was given the all clear during an initial scan on his ankle.
But a second scan showed up a hairline fracture to his left foot.

And the club will wait for clarification on Giroud’s second scan before fully disclosing the details of his injury.

Arsene Wenger will address the issue at Tuesday’s pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday's Besiktas clash.

Giroud’s fitness isn’t the only selection headache for Wenger, who will also be without the suspended Aaron Ramsey following his red card in the first leg, and captain Mikel Arteta who is still suffering with an ankle injury.

Arteta is expected to be available for the Barclays Premier League showdown against Manchester City on September 13, while Yaya Sanogo is expected to return to the squad for the clash against Besiktas after a hamstring problem.
But it is Giroud’s injury that is causing Wenger the biggest concern.

Olivier Giroud's injury worse than first feared with Arsenal striker set to be ruled out until the New Year

* Olivier Giroud suffered an ankle injury during 2-2 draw with Everton
* Frenchman, who scored in the draw, set to be ruled out for five months
* News may force Arsene Wenger into the transfer market again
* Yaya Sanogo and Alexis Sanchez could fill in up front at the Emirates
* Lukas Podolski also an option, but German World Cup winner has been linked with a loan move to Juventus
* Arsenal face Besiktas on Wednesday in Champions League play-off second leg at the Emirates after 0-0 draw in Turkey

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud's injury is worse than first feared with the Frenchman possibly facing a lay-off until the New Year.

Giroud, who picked up an ankle injury in the dying moments of Saturday's 2-2 draw at Everton, scored the equaliser Goodison Park, but could leave Arsenal short up front for the next four months.

Crocked: Olivier Giroud (right) went down with an ankle injury against Everton on Saturday

The injury would rock Arsenal's title hopes just two games into the new season with Alexis Sanchez and Yaya Sanogo to call upon to fill the centre forward role.

Manager Arsene Wenger said in a press conference that Giroud would see a specialist on Wednesday, and despite not categorically ruling out the Frenchman for any length of time, Wenger admits he is sad about the news of an injury, which he claimed could be long-term.

Wenger ruled Giroud out of Wednesday's Champions League play-off second leg with Besiktas, saying: 'He will not play.'

'For the rest, he will see a specialist in England tomorrow (Wednesday) and after we will make an announcement of how long he will be out.

'We prepare for the game. It can be a long-term injury. We will see tomorrow (Wednesday). I don’t know if it’s broken. It’s sad for us but we are focused on the game.'

The injury may have an impact on Wenger's movement in the transfer market both coming in and out of the club.

Lukas Podolski was thought to be heading to Juventus but a loan move is now in doubt, while Wenger may need to strengthen the frontline further.

Yaya Sanogo was in good form in pre-season, scoring four goals against Benfica in the Emirates Cup, but Wenger refuses to panic just yet and is still looking ahead to the Beskitas clash.

'We are 24 hours from a big game and our focus is more on that than the transfer window. I learn one thing in our job: you say nothing categorically.'

Arsenal poised to bid for Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck to replace injured Olivier Giroud

* Arsenal are set to swoop for Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck
* The England international is interested in a move to the Emirates
* First-choice striker Olivier Giroud is likely to be out until after the New Year
* United may be reluctant to sell to Arsenal after the Gunners' refusal to sell them Thomas Vermaelen
* Arsene Wenger is also considering a bid for QPR's Loic Remy
* Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani will likely be too expensive

Arsenal are set to explore a move for Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck to help ease the loss of injury victim Olivier Giroud.

As Sportsmail revealed on Tuesday, Giroud is facing an extended period on the sidelines after sustaining an ankle injury against Everton on Saturday.

Arsene Wenger will move to strengthen his forward line before next week's transfer deadline, and Welbeck features on the club's list of options.

Target: Arsenal are set to make a bid for Manchester United's out of favour forward Danny Welbeck

Sportsmail understands the Gunners were keen on Welbeck prior to Giroud's injury, but fears over the Frenchman has seen their interest intensify.

It is believed Welbeck would give serious consideration to a move to the Emirates Stadium.

But whether United would sell the England international to a rival remains to be seen.

Queens Park Rangers frontman Loic Remy is also a realistic option for Arsenal.
Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani is a long-term target for the club, but a move for the Uruguayan seem remote given the vast cost of any deal.

Option: QPR's Loic Remy is also being considered by Arsenal, but his wage demands could be an issue

Priced out: Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani is highly rated but will likely be too expensive for Arsenal

Arsenal plot £20m swoop for Marco Reus from Borussia Dortmund next summer

* Arsene Wenger wants to buy Marco Reus next summer
* Borussia Dortmund midfielder has a £20million buy-out clause
* Arsenal completed signing of Danny Welbeck for £16m on deadline day
* Reus has yet to commit to signing a new deal with Dortmund

Arsenal are already plotting further moves to strengthen their forward line with a swoop for Marco Reus next year.

Having completed the £16million capture of Danny Welbeck from Manchester United on deadline day, Arsene Wenger is eyeing further reinforcements to his attacking options.

And the Gunners WILL be in the running to sign Reus from Borussia Dortmund next summer after trying to sign him in the last transfer window.

On the move: Marco Reus (centre) is wanted by Arsenal next summer from Borussia Dortmund

Waiting game: Arsenal looked into signing Reus this summer but will wait for 12 months

Wenger is a huge fan of Reus and Arsenal intend to activate a £20million buy-out clause in the Germany forward's contract, which is due to kick-in next summer.

Of course, Arsenal will not be the side in the running for Reus, with Europe's elite clubs likely to register their interest in the player.

Dortmund want to tie down the speedy 25-year-old to a new deal that would see the clause withdrawn from his contract.

But Reus, who can play anywhere across the front three, has so far refused to sign.

He was tipped to be a star of the World Cup before being injured a week before the tournament.

Arsene Wenger reveals his biggest regret is missing out on Cristiano Ronaldo

* Arsene Wenger regrets missing out on signing of Cristiano Ronaldo
* French boss claims he was 'so close' to sealing Ronaldo deal
* Portuguese forward signed for Manchester United in 2003
* Wenger hails former Arsenal defender Lauren as one of his best ever signings
* Arsenal are in a 'comfortable position' to challenge for the title, claims Gunners boss

Arsene Wenger has revealed that his biggest regret in football is missing out on the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo before the Portuguese star sealed a deal with Manchester United.

The then 18-year-old signed for Sir Alex Ferguson's side from Sporting Lisbon in 2003, but Wenger believes he was 'so close' to getting there before United.

Speaking to Arsenal's official smartphone sponsor, Huawei, Wenger said: 'My biggest regret, I was so close, to signing Cristiano Ronaldo, and not only did I not get him he signed for Manchester United, so that of course still hurts today.'

Arsene Wenger revealed his biggest regret in football was not signing Cristiano Ronaldo

The Arsenal boss also claimed that his greatest every signing was Cameroon defender Lauren, rather than Gunners legend Thierry Henry.

He added: 'I’d never say which player was the best, but I think it’s the signings like Lauren who you spot when nobody else does.

'He was a right midfielder who I played at right back and was one of the Invincibles'.

The Arsenal manager hailed former Gunners defender Lauren (above) as one of his best signings

Having scored 15 goals in 15 games against Arsenal, Wenger unsurprisingly named Didier Drogba as a player he would have rather managed than played against.

Speaking of the Ivorian striker, now back with Chelsea, the Frenchman said: 'I missed him when he was playing in France and I knew he was a good player then.

'And he hurt us so much in big games, and so if he played for us it would not have happened'.

Without a win since the opening day of the Premier League season, Wenger's side face an in-form Aston Villa outfit on Saturday.

Despite sitting in seventh place, Wenger believes his side are in a 'comfortable position' to challenge for the title.

He added: 'We’re in a more comfortable position (to challenge for the title), we can keep our big players and buy big players such as Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.'

Alisher Usmanov: Criticises Wenger

Usmanov admits Wenger mistakes
TEAMtalk - Monday 24th November 2014

Arsenal's second biggest shareholder Alisher Usmanov says Arsene Wenger's principles may be holding Arsenal back, claiming the manager must admit his own mistakes.

Usmanov, an Uzbekistani businessman who owns a 30% stake in Arsenal, was speaking to CNBC following the defeat to Manchester United.

Arsenal have now lost 11 of their last 15 matches to United, winning just one. They have won just four of their 12 Premier League games this season.*

"[The] potential of the team is there, but there is no critical evaluation of own mistakes and their admittance.," Usmanov said. "Because not a single genius can retain its level when he does not admit own mistakes. Only when you admit your mistakes you rid of them. I wish this to my club.

"We just repeat same results year by year. Quite high to secure the place in the Champions League. But we regularly lose in the first round of play-offs. As an investor I am not happy with that.

"I like Arsene for his principles. But principles are sort of restriction. And restrictions are always lost possibilities. That's why sometimes coaches even without principles became the coaches of great teams.

"My opinion, and I tell it openly, we need to strengthen every position to play on the level of such teams in UK as Chelsea and Manchester City, in Europe like Real, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Bavaria [Bayern Munich] and other clubs."

Arsenal confirm fan arrested
TEAMtalk - Sunday 23rd November 2014

Arsenal have confirmed that a fan was arrested after throwing an object towards Manchester United's bench after the visitors' opening goal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

United moved back into the top four following their 2-1 win in north London after an Antonio Valencia shot deflected in off Kieran Gibbs and a Wayne Rooney strike, before Olivier Giroud got one back late on.

Arsenal have promised stiff action against the fan if he is found guilty.

An Arsenal spokesman said "A male was arrested at the stadium for throwing an object towards the Manchester United bench after the first Manchester United goal.

"There will be full co-operation between Arsenal and the Met Police - we do not tolerate anti-social behaviour. If found guilty, individual will also be banned by club."

Arsenal targeted for takeover by Africa's richest man with Aliko Dangote keen to purchase Gunners one day

* Africa's richest man Aliko Dangote has an estimated fortune of £10.4billion
* The Nigerian was reportedly interested in buying Arsenal in 2010
* Dangote: 'I still hope, one day at the right price, that I will buy the team.'

Africa's richest man Aliko Dangote claims he still harbours hopes of one day buying Arsenal.

The Nigerian has an estimated fortune of 15billion US dollars (£10.4billion) and is reported to have wanted to buy into the Gunners when former director Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith was selling her shares in 2010.

Arsenal's current majority shareholder is American tycoon Stan Kroenke, who remains committed to the Barclays Premier League club for the long-term. Uzbek magnate Alisher Usmanov controls around 30 per cent and has also expressed no desire to offload any of his stock.

Africa's richest man Aliko Dangote claims he is interested in buying Arsenal one day and knows his 'strategy'

Nevertheless Dangote, whose business interests include sugar, flour and oil, remains keen to become part of the Emirates Stadium club sometime in the future.

Speaking to Bloomberg, he said: 'I still hope, one day at the right price, that I will buy the team.

'I might buy it, not at a ridiculous price but a price that the owners won't want to resist. I know my strategy.'

Dangote, though, added no imminent bid was in the pipeline.

'We have 16billion dollars-worth of investments in the next few years. Right now I want to take my own business to a certain level. Once I finish on that trajectory, then maybe,' he said.

Arsenal beat Hull 3-1 on Monday night to give themselves a good chance to finish second behind Premier League champions Chelsea, and will face Aston Villa in the FA Cup final at Wembley on May 30.

Dangote, however, suggested Arsene Wenger's side should be achieving more.

He added: '(Wenger) needs to change his style a bit. They need new direction.'

Mesut Ozil will get Arsenal No 10 role in bid to bring out his best... while Arsene Wenger likes the look of Angel di Maria
  • Mesut Ozil will be given the central playmaker's role permanently next term
  • Copa America winner Alexis Sanchez will be asked to play out wide
  • Arsene Wenger would be interested in a move for Manchester United misfit Angel di Maria

Mesut Ozil will be handed Arsenal’s No 10 role on a permanent basis next season as Arsene Wenger looks to coax the best from his £42million man.

The club’s record signing hasn’t hit the heights some have expected since arriving from Real Madrid in 2013 — though last season was hampered by injury.

The Germany star has been shifted around Arsenal’s three attacking midfield slots since his big money move.

Mesut Ozil (centre) will be handed the playmaker's role on a permanent basis next season

The Germany star has struggled for consistency while playing across the midfield at the Emirates

But the creative midfielder will be handed the central attacking role behind the main striker next term which means Alexis Sanchez will be deployed on the wing next season, despite impressive displays through the middle at various times during his impressive debut campaign.

Despite the club’s wealth of attacking midfield talent, Wenger is not ruling out the capture of another winger this summer.

Manchester United winger Angel Di Maria would be of interest to Wenger who has tried to land the Argentina international on two previous occasions.

Mathieu Flamini could be set for Arsenal exit as Bastia target free transfer for midfielder
  • Ligue 1 Bastia considering a move for Arsenal's Mathieu Flamini
  • 31-year-old Flamini has slipped down the pecking order at Arsenal
  • Flamini made 23 Premier League appearances for the Gunners last season

Bastia are showing an interest in Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini, who could leave the club on a free transfer this summer despite still being under contract at the Emirates Stadium.

The 31-year-old Flamini has slipped down the pecking order at Arsenal with their array of midfielders and is keen to weigh up options ahead of making a decision on his future.

Flamini made 23 Premier League appearances for the Gunners last season as Arsene Wenger's side claimed third spot.

The Frenchman (centre) has to settle for a bit-part role for Arsene Wenger's side last season

Flamini had played 153 times for the north London club during his first spell between 2004 and 2008 before signing for AC Milan.

Arsenal have given professional deals to second-year scholars Hugo Keto and Stephy Mavididi.

Keto, 17, is a goalkeeper signed from HJK Helsinki last summer who featured in the UEFA Youth League. Mavididi scored 18 goals for Arsenal across three age groups last season and broke into the under 21 side.
