Sir Alex Ferguson believes Louis van Gaal will get things right at Manchester United if he is given time after likening the Dutchman's start at Old Trafford to his own.

Van Gaal has endured a mixed start to his Old Trafford reign losing three of his first eight games in charge, but United currently sit in fourth place after back-to-back home wins over Queens Park Rangers and Everton.

Ferguson, who backed van Gaal's big spending spree in the summer to reshape the United squad, has compared the Dutchman's start to life at United to the beginning of his own reign and has called on the club's board to back van Gaal.

"He’s not been getting the results that are expected but when I came to the club [in November 1986] I didn’t get the results I expected myself at the beginning," Ferguson told MUTV.

"What we needed then was Sir Bobby Charlton, Martin Edwards and the board to stick by me and we had a great spell after that.*

"Once I got settled into the club, everything was fine. Louis is going through that same process and there’s no doubt in my mind that he will sort it out.”

Ferguson was criticised last season for casting a shadow over his successor David Moyes by being too high profile at United games and Ferguson admits he found it hard to contain his emotions during the heavy home defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City last term.

Asked if he is annoyed at how that has been portrayed, Ferguson added: "There's a bit of that. I haven't been to every game, obviously. I've missed a couple this season already but I've been to a few of them and I continue to do that.

"The way I've always been and I did it as a manager, I'm actually quite stone-faced watching a game. I don't try to show any emotions unless we score.*

"I always celebrate a goal, even now as a director I still celebrate a goal. You're always conscious maybe the cameras are on you and this is happening quite a lot.

"I got annoyed when we lost to Liverpool last year. I didn't enjoy that. I don't like losing to Liverpool and Manchester City last year, because they are your biggest rivals and the ones you always strive to defeat and are always in our way. Particularly Liverpool of course."

Desakan Van Gaal Mundur Mulai Bergema di Old Trafford



VIVAbola - Kesabaran fans Manchester United tampaknya mulai habis. Beberapa fans kini mulai mendesak manajer Louis van Gaal mundur dari jabatannya. Pasalnya, Van Gaal dianggap tak lebih baik dari David Moyes.

Performa Iblis Merah memang tak kunjung membaik sejak Van Gaal ditunjuk menggantikan Moyes. Ironisnya, Van Gaal telah menghabiskan dana sebesar 150 juta pounds untuk mendatangkan pemain baru di bursa transfer musim panas lalu.

Dari 8 laga pembuka Premier League yang telah dilakoni, MU hanya mampu meraih 3 kemenangan, 3 hasil imbang dan 2 kekalahan. Terakhir, MU hampir menelan kekalahan dari West Bromwich Albion jika tak diselamatkan gol Daley Blind.

Lebih parahnya, konsentrasi MU sebenarnya tak terpecah dengan persaingan di pentas Eropa layaknya Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal dan Liverpool. Situasi ini rupanya membuat fans MU mulai tak nyaman.

Dilansir Daily Star, desakan Van Gaal mundur kini mulai riuh terdengar terutama di jejaring sosial, twitter. Bahkan, sebuah kampanye dengan tagar #VanGaalOut kini mendapat dukungan luas dari fans Iblis Merah.

"Dengan skuad yang ada saat ini, Moyes akan melakukan hal yang lebih baik.. #VanGaalOut," tulis seorang suporter MU di akun twitternya. "#VanGaalOut #MoyesIn," tulis akun lain yang tak kalah pedas.

Sebagai perbandingan, MU di masa rezim David Moyes hanya menggelontorkan dana sebesar £27,5 juta untuk memboyong Marouane Fellaini dari Everton dan £37,1 juta untuk mendatangkan Juan Mata dari Chelsea.

Namun, tragis bagi Moyes yang harus rela dipecat MU setelah 10 bulan bekerja dari total kontrak 6 tahun di Old Trafford. (one)

Van Gaal and Mourinho set for tactical battle


Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho will lock horns on Sunday and many are expecting a tactical battle between the two master technicians.

The pair worked together at Barcelona when van Gaal was in charge of the Catalan giants and there is enormous mutual respect between them. Despite coaching some of the biggest clubs on the planet, they have only met once in a competitive fixture - the 2010 Champions League final.

Mourinho came out on top on that occasion as his Inter Milan side defeated Bayern Munich 2-0 with a brace by Diego Milito at the Bernabeu. The win secured a Treble for the Serie A side but van Gaal will be determined to come out on top this time around at Old Trafford.

The duo also faced each other in the Franz Beckenbauer farewell match soon after Mourinho joined Real Madrid in the wake of his Inter success. Real won on penalties in Munich after a draw in the exhibition game.

Both men are deep tactical thinkers and it should make for an absorbing encounter this weekend when the Portuguese coach brings his Barclays Premier League leaders to Manchester. Despite their friendship, the high stakes mean a real battle should unfold at Old Trafford.

Reds midfielder Daley Blind explains to United Review, the official matchday programme: "We have to play our own tactical game and then we have to play as a team to win.*Maybe it will be a tactical affair. I think both coaches are very strong at that point, so maybe it will be a tight game."

Award-winning author Jonathan Wilson analysed the upcoming clash in some detail during an interview with this month's Inside United magazine and feels the United boss could have something up his sleeve. "In some ways, having a bad start could be a good thing in the long term," Wilson explained. "It has happened a few times in his previous roles and it makes him think, and he'll think of something utterly ridiculous and brilliant which will work, because that's what he always done. Van Gaal always finds a way to make it work.

"I think Chelsea will play it tight again, as they did against the top teams last season, and look to strike on the break. The pace and strength they have is built for that approach. It would seem an extraordinary position to take, but sitting deep could work for United."

The opposing managers know each other inside out and this only adds to the intrigue surrounding how the two teams will line up. "We have been observing each other ever since [Barcelona] and been sending text messages," revealed van Gaal. "Little did I know he would be such a great coach. He was an excellent coach then but now he is one of the best in the world and I don't think many coaches can make that declaration."

Similarly, the Chelsea chief hailed his former boss as the best coach at the World Cup finals: "He did a fantastic job with a [Netherlands] team that, in my opinion, was not strong enough to arrive where they arrived. He is a very, very good coach and he'll be great for United. We are both great coaches; it's what we were born to do."

For all of the swaggering self-confidence of this statement - and we have grown to expect nothing less from the successful Blues manager - any football follower on the planet would surely have to rank van Gaal and Mourinho among a very small group of elite coaches in the game. The world awaits a strategic tussle of epic proportions. Let battle commence.

Jakarta - Manchester United kembali ditunggu laga menyulitkan saat harus berhadapan dengan Manchester City. Derby Manchester jadi tantangan berat Louis van Gaal setelah sukses megimbangi Chelsea.

Datang ke Old Trafford dengan reputasi mengilat di banyak klub berbeda, petualangan pertama Van Gaal di Premier League tak berjalan mulus. Dia harus berupaya keras membangkitkan kembali 'Setan Merah', di mana sampai sembilan pekan terlalui timnya masih terperosok di urutan delapan dan terpaut 10 angka dari puncak klasemen.

Akhir pekan lalu, lewat sebuah gol Robin van Persie jelang laga tuntas, Van Gaal berhasil mengantar MU mengimbangi Chelsea di Old Trafford. Tantangan berat buatnya berlanjut di akhir pekan ini. Van Gaal menunjukkan kalibernya sebagai salah satu pelatih terbaik pada duel-duel tersebut dengan rekor impresif.

Melatih Ajax dalam selang 1991 hingga 1997, Van Gaal tercatat melalui 18 De Klassieker. Hasilnya: dia memberi Ajax 12 kemenangan, empat kali kalah dan cuma kalah dua kali. Rekor itu termasuk dua kemenangan dan satu kekalahan di final Piala Belanda.

Di El Clasico pelatih kelahiran Amsterdam 8 August 1951 itu juga punya catatan apik. Dari delapan Clasico dia cuma kalah satu kali. Tercatat ada tiga kemenangan diraih, termasuk keunggulan di Camp Nou tahun 1998 dan 1999 yang mengantar The Catalans jadi juara La Liga.

Saat melatih Bayern selama dua musim, Van Gaal punya hasil beragam dalam duel dengan Dortmund. Ada empat duel Der Klassiker dengan hasil yang didapat adalah dua kemenangan dan dua kali kalah.

Catatan Van Gaal untuk duel-duel sengit dengan rival utama klub yang dilatihnya adalah 17W, 6D, dan 7L.
