Manchester United edge Real Madrid and Barcelona to remain most valuable club in Europe, according to study into continent's leading teams

* Manchester United remain the most valuable club in Europe, claims a study
* The report looked at the finances of 32 clubs based on a range of various factors
* The clubs are ranked by a measure used to assess how much it would cost to buy
* Professional services firm KPMG using its own formula to reach these valuations

Manchester United remain the most valuable club in Europe according to the latest study of leading teams.

The report looked at the finances of 32 clubs based on their popularity on social media channels, aggregate operating revenues over three seasons, and success in European competitions.

The clubs were then ranked by 'enterprise value' - an accounting measure used to assess how much it would cost to buy any given club or company as it includes a business' total debt, with professional services firm KPMG using its own formula to reach these valuations.

Manchester United remain the most valuable club in Europe according to the latest study

For the period covered by the KPMG study, as at January 1 2018, United came out on top of the most prominent European football clubs.

United's enterprise value sees them again rank ahead of both Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, extending their lead with a year-on-year growth of five percent.

The Premier League club top the list at £2.92bn, with Real Madrid at £2.62bn edging out Barcelona at £2.49bn.

Germany's Bayern Munchen are fourth (£2.29bn), ahead of Manchester City (£1.93bn), the Ethiad Stadium club seeing a nine per cent increase in year-on-year growth for the period of the study.

Quote:
Top 10 ranking

1. Manchester United £2.92bn

2. Real Madrid £2.62bn

3. Barcelona £2.49bn

4. Bayern Munich £2.29bn

5. Manchester City £1.93bn

6. Arsenal £1.88bn

7. Chelsea £1.58bn

8. Liverpool £1.415bn

9. Juventus £1.158bn

10. Tottenham £1.16bn
The financial muscle of Premier League clubs - powered by lucrative broadcasting revenues, especially from overseas rights, and sponsorship deals - is shown with Arsenal (£1.88bn), Chelsea (£1.58bn), Liverpool (£1.415bn) and Tottenham all in the top 10.

Spurs showed 27 per cent growth, up to £1.16bn, while Leicester, who won the Premier League title in 2015/2016, are listed in 15th place, with a 29 per cent increase at £533m.

West Ham, recently moved into the London Stadium, are a new entry at number 16, on £475m and Everton (£458m) are 19th.

In a statement, KPMG's global head of sports Andrea Sartori, the report's author, said: 'Despite this year's (overall aggregate) growth being lower than last year's 14 per cent growth, the football industry continues its rise.

'Overall growth is driven by different factors, one of these being the increase of operating revenues of the top 32, at eight per cent.

'Eye-catching transfer deals and spiralling staff costs have not prevented such clubs from registering a striking upward trend, as the profits before taxes increased by some 17 times in comparison to the previous year.'

Sartori added: 'One of the reasons for this growth can be found in the significant influence exercised by English clubs, as well as the improved financial health of many mid-size clubs within the ranking, which also reflects compliance with the UEFA Financial Fair Play Regulations.'

Real Madrid replace Manchester United as Europe's biggest earners as Manchester City close earnings gap on rivals by a huge £40m

* Real Madrid and Barca are Europe's top two earners in Deloitte Money League
* Jose Mourinho's struggle for success at Man United has seen Real take top spot
* United had been top of the Deloitte Money League for the previous two years
* Manchester City have narrowed the earnings gap on their neighbours by £40m

Jose Mourinho's struggle for success at Manchester United has seen Real Madrid replace the club as the continent's biggest earners and allowed Manchester City to narrow the earnings gap on their neighbours by a massive £40m.

United had been top of the Deloitte Money League for the previous two years but despite a return to the Champions League did not venture beyond the round of 16, so Real and Barcelona have leapfrogged them as Europe's top two earners in the table.

United did increase their revenues by getting back into the Champions League - but by only two per cent to £590m, a smaller rise than any club in the Deloitte top five. Matchday and general commercial revenues were both down and income from UEFA roughly similar to the previous year, when they won the Europa League.

La Liga giants Real Madrid have replaced Manchester United as Europe's biggest earners

City, meanwhile, increased all revenues, closing the earnings gap on United in a single season from £128m in 2016-17 to £87m this time. Gradually, City have chipped away at what was a huge class divide when the Abu Dhabis first bought the club. A decade ago, United had more than three times City's annual earning power: £324m compared to £104m.

The Deloitte report commentary said United's on-field performances would have to improve if they are to catch up the two Spanish giants. 'Improved first team performance will drive increased Premier League and UEFA distributions and enhance the potential to negotiate improved commercial deals.'

The narrowing of the traditional commercial class divide in Manchester is reflected in north London, with Deloitte revealing that Tottenham Hotspur have made substantial ground on Arsenal, with a mere £10m now separating them from the Gunners.

Though Spurs' extended relocation to Wembley Stadium has frustrated many fans, the temporary move has increased matchday revenue by 54 per cent to £26.5m. This has seen Spurs climb above Juventus into the Money League top 10 for only the second time.

Deloitte believe that Arsenal's own 17-year stay in their top 10 could now come under threat. Spurs £379.4m revenue compares with Arsenal's £389.1m - down because of the side's absence from the Champions League.

Arsenal are the biggest fallers in the top 10 - dropping three places to ninth, their lowest position since 2004-05 after a bigger fall in revenue than any other club in the top 20. They were nearly £30m down. Liverpool's run to the Champions League final saw them record the largest revenue increase in the Money League's top 10 - a hike of £90.6m - and they now sit seventh.

Chelsea, Everton, Newcastle United and West Ham United complete England's representation in this year's top 20.

Brighton and Hove Albion have made the top 30 with revenue of £139.4m - 22 years after generating just £1.1m in revenue, while in crisis and teetering on the brink of relegation from the Football League.

'All under control, a big scare': Casillas tweets from hospital bed after having a heart attack in Porto training as Real Madrid and Ramos pay tribute to 'eternal captain' who led Spain to World Cup glory in 2010

* Iker Casillas taken to hospital after suffering heart attack on Wednesday
* He had been training with Porto team-mates ahead of league game on Saturday
* Porto confirmed incident but say Casillas is stable and has been treated
* Casillas captained Spain to 2010 World Cup and two European Championships
* Former club Real Madrid, where Casillas played for 16 years, led the tributes
* Players from around the world of football sent best wishes to the 37-year-old

Iker Casillas insists 'all is under control' after he had a heart attack while training with Porto.

The 37-year-old goalkeeper, who won the World Cup with Spain in 2010, was taken to hospital on Wednesday where he is being treated.

On Wednesday evening he posted a picture of himself smiling in his hospital bed, alongside an update on his condition.

Iker Casillas insists 'all is under control' after he had a heart attack while training with Porto. The 37-year was taken to hospital on Wednesday and said: 'A big scare but everything is intact'

Porto confirmed the news on Twitter, with the message: 'Always together! Strength, Iker!'

All under control here, a big scare but everything is intact. Thank you very much for the messages and affection,' he wrote on Twitter.

Casillas had been working at the PortoGaia Training Centre on Wednesday morning in preparation for their league encounter with Aves this weekend.

Casillas suffered an an 'acute myocardial infarction' - colloquially known as a heart attack - at Porto training, but was treated quickly and is not in immediate danger.

Casillas had been training with his team mates in temperatures of around 20 degrees celsius on Wednesday morning when he collapsed, causing the session to be suspended.

He remains in hospital and is not expected to feature again for Porto in the remainder of their Primeira Liga season.

Porto confirmed the worrying news on Twitter, with the message: 'Always together! Strength, Iker!', along with an image of Casillas with fans at his unveiling after signing for the club.

The club also posted an official statement on their website, which crashed due to the number of people wanting to read an update on the legendary goalkeeper's status.

The statement says: 'Iker Casillas suffered an acute myocardial infarction during Wednesday morning training session held at the PortoGaia Training Centre in Olival.

'The work session was promptly interrupted to provide assistance to the Porto goalkeeper, who is currently at the Hospital CUF Porto. Casillas is well, stable and his heart problem solved.'

Quote:
WHAT HAPPENED TO IKER CASILLAS?

The 37-year-old former Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper suffered what is medically known as 'myocardial infarction' - more colloquially referred to as a heart attack.

It occurs when blood flow slows or stops reaching a part of the heart, causing chest pains, shortness of breath and anxiety, among other symptoms.

The usual root cause of myocardial infarction is a blood clot, which stops regular flow around the body.

People who suffer heart attacks can return to work within weeks, but it usually takes months to recover. Casillas will not play again for Porto this season and may not be fit for the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

Complications after an attack can include an irregular heartbeat or damage to the muscles. If Casillas has suffered long term effects, he may not play football again.

Source: NHS
Casillas burst on to the scene when he made his debut for boyhood club Real Madrid as a teenager in 1999. He remained at the Bernabeu for the following 16 years.

During his club career he has won the Champions League three times - with Real in 2000, 2002 and 2014. He also won five La Liga titles and two Copa del Reys.

The Spanish giants released an official statement, which read: 'Real Madrid wants to send all out support to beloved captain Iker Casillas.

'Casillas has taught us throughout his professional career to overcome the most incredible challenges to enhance the glory of our club. He has taught us that giving up does not fit into our philosophy of life and has shown us countless times that being stronger the harder the challenge is, the way to achieve victory.

'Real Madrid want to see our eternal captain recover as soon as possible and send him all the courage of the world.'

Such is Casillas' standing in football, Real's great rivals, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, also sent supportive messages to the goalkeeper.

His crowning achievement came in 2010 when he became the first Spanish captain to lift the World Cup, after they beat Holland 1-0 in the final in South Africa.

Playing every minute of Spain's seven games, Casillas conceded just twice, and kept clean sheets in all four of their knockout matches.

He was central to the dominant Spain side of the era, winning both Euro 2008 and Euro 2012. He is also his country's record appearance holder, with 167 caps.

Casillas moved to Porto in 2015 and helped them win the Portuguese league title last season. He remains their No 1 goalkeeper and played both legs of the Champions League quarter final defeat by Liverpool last month.

In total, Casillas has made more than 1,000 professional career appearances, and had no immediate retirement plans, with his contract at Porto set to run until 2020.

Tributes and well-wishes have been sent from around the world of football, including by one of his successors as Real goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois.

His former Real team mate, Sergio Ramos, tweeted three praying emojis, while fellow goalkeeper Loris Karius said he was 'shocked at the news'.

Pepe Reina, who was a team mate of Casillas in the Spain 2010 World Cup squad, tweeted a picture of the two goalkeepers embracing.

He wrote: 'With that heart so big I have no doubt that everything will be OK brother. Much courage!', along with a heart emoji.

Gareth Bale, another former Real team mate of Casillas, sent his best wishes, as did hundreds of other players - including Fabrice Muamba, who had a heart attack while playing for Bolton in a 2012 FA Cup match.

Stars from outside football also wished him the best - Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal tweeting: 'A huge hug to Casillas right now.'

Casillas is married to Spanish sports journalist Sara Carbonero. They have two children - Martin, five, and Lucas, two.

Get well soon, Casillas...

Real Madrid overtake Manchester United to become the most valuable brand in world football... as Premier League giants continue to dominate

* Real Madrid have been named as the most valuable football brand in the world
* The Spanish giants overtook Manchester United in a report by Brand Finance
* Premier League clubs dominated the research's top 10 of most valuable clubs

Manchester United have been surpassed by Real Madrid as the most valuable football brand in the world.

According to a report by Brand Finance, the Spanish giants are now worth a staggering £1.44billion after a growth of 26.9 per cent since 2018.

That, accompanied with their recent on-field woes, has left United trailing behind in second place after they fell by 5.8 per cent in the last 12 months to £1.29bn.

Manchester United have been surpassed by Real Madrid as the most valuable football brand. United's on-field woes have seen them slip down to second place and lose ground by 5.8%. Back-to-back Champions League finals have seen Liverpool achieve 20 per cent growth. Wolves are now said to be the most valuable new entrant to the Brand Finance Football 50

'Real Madrid have shown this year who truly reigns supreme in the world of football,' said Bryn Anderson, director at Brand Finance.

'They triumph not only as the most valuable and strongest brand but their enterprise value and stadium are also ranked second to none.

'The most successful club in the history of European football is finally reaping the benefits of decades of spectacular on-and-off-pitch performance.'

The rest of the top 10 is dominated by Premier League sides with Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham in the illustrious group.

Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City have kept their positions as the other members of the top five.

Barcelona are up 11.8 per cent to £1.22bn, Bayern have also grown and their 13.3 per cent rise sees them now worth £1.15bn while recently crowned back-to-back Premier League champions Manchester City are up 14.4 per cent to £1.10bn.

Consecutive Champions League finals have seen Liverpool achieve an impressive 20 per cent growth. They are now said to be worth £1.04bn and that figure is surely only going to continue to rise as they improve under Jurgen Klopp.

Chelsea follow them in the list in seventh. They are worth £846m but have suffered a 1.8 per cent loss in growth.

PSG's plethora of big names continue to earn them more market position and a rise of 21.3 per cent has seen them valued at £799m.

North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham conclude the top 10 with the Gunners falling by 0.8 per cent to £773m. Spurs, who are starting to reap the rewards of their plush new stadium, have enjoyed growth worth 20.4 per cent and they are adjudged to be worth £662m.

The study also found that the Premier League is the most widely followed national competition across key European markets.

English clubs dominate that list with 43 per cent of total brand value. The Bundesliga follows closely behind with 13 clubs but ultimately ranks behind LaLiga for combined brand value.

Wolves' sensational return to the Premier League seems to be paying off away from the pitch as well as on it. They are now said to be the most valuable new entrant to the Brand Finance Football 50 this year, ranked 28th – above Ajax, Sevilla, and Celtic.
