'I don't think just anybody could have gone in and had that record': Brighton boss Chris Hughton praises Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's strong start as Manchester United manager

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has won six successive games since being appointed
* Paul Ince talked down record and said 'anyone' could have produced the results
* Chris Hughton however feels Ince's assessment of the situation is unfair

Brighton boss Chris Hughton has praised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's record-breaking impact at Manchester United in the wake of dismissive comments from Paul Ince.

Solskjaer has won six successive games since being appointed, the first person to do so, but former United midfielder Ince has talked down the achievement and claimed 'anyone' could have produced the same results following the departure of Jose Mourinho.

Hughton, who takes his Albion side to Old Trafford on Saturday, feels Ince's assessment of the situation is unfair.

'I don't think just anybody could have gone in and had the record that he has now,' said Hughton. 'I think you have to give him credit for that. In whatever way he has done that - and I don't know what way that is - he's got results.

'They haven't lost for six games. You have to give them a lot of praise for that. Any manager coming in after Mourinho, I don't think they could have expected any more because the results and the performances indicate that. We know how difficult every game is.'

Solskjaer was eased into his interim role with four league fixtures against teams currently in the bottom half of the table and a routine FA Cup third-round tie at home to Championship strugglers Reading.

The 45-year-old, who scored 126 goals for United between 1996 and 2007, recorded his most impressive victory to date by beating top-four rivals Tottenham 1-0 at Wembley last weekend.

Brighton boss Chris Hughton has praised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's impact at Manchester United. Solskjaer has won six successive games since being appointed, the first person to do so

Hughton attended that game and has been impressed with United's improved performances and attacking intent.

'Seeing their recent games, they are playing a way that allows the quality and pace in their side to show, and they look like they can score goals,' he said.

'They're aggressive in the way they are pressing, so at this moment they are in really good form which makes it a more difficult task for us.

'The results speak for themselves. They have been able to win games and score goals and play really well.'

Brighton have beaten United twice in the Premier League since promotion in 2017. Both of those wins came at the Amex Stadium against teams managed by Mourinho.

'The one this season kick-started our season after a poor performance at Watford. Both were very important results. It lifts you as a team,' said Hughton.

'I think we're better away from home than we were last season, but it's about getting as many points as well. That's difficult, particularly against a club like United. But we're ready.'

Hughton, who does not anticipate making any January signings, expects out-of-favour left-back Markus Suttner to complete an imminent loan move to an unnamed club.

FIVE REASONS WHY WE CAN'T WAIT FOR UNITED V BRIGHTON

With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the wheel and Manchester United in confident mood following six straight wins, there’s plenty to be excited about as Reds. Here, we shine a light on just five reasons to look forward to this Saturday’s Premier League return to Old Trafford...

1: SEVEN FROM SEVEN?
Solskjaer has made history by becoming the first United manager to win his first six matches in charge, after a series of accomplished team performances since his appointment as caretaker manager in December. Another victory, against Brighton & Hove Albion, would extend that record and crucially boost our bid to finish in the Premier League’s top four this season. With rivals Arsenal and Chelsea meeting at the Emirates Stadium in the evening, this could become a pivotal day for all.

2: RASHFORD’S ON FIRE

Marcus scored his fourth goal of Solskjaer’s reign with that immaculate right-footed finish against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, which highlighted his growing confidence and prowess when pulling the trigger. Incidentally, that strike at Wembley was also his 40th from 149 United appearances and that is a better tally than Cristiano Ronaldo had achieved by the same point. If you’re picking a Fantasy League team, or having a bet, Rashford is a shrewd selection this weekend.

3: POGBA IS BOSSING IT
Watching Paul in full flow and on form is one of football’s great joys: he's a rare mix of elegance and power, at times playing like a man among children on a playground where he is physically and technically superior. His positioning under Solskjaer is facilitating a more attacking approach, with greater freedom, which helped him to win our Player of the Month award for December and his assist for Rashford at Spurs last Sunday demonstrated his devastating quality in the final third. More of the same on Saturday? Yes please!

4: LINDELOF IS MATURING
Solskjaer’s first three matches were slightly blemished by frustrating concessions, but thankfully those were followed by as many clean sheets in a row and Victor was integral to that run, alongside Phil Jones at centre-back. Our Sweden international was particularly effective at Tottenham and executed a second-half tackle on Harry Winks that drew a comparison with the great Nemanja Vidic. While the former Benfica defender should have a quieter game against a Brighton side that has only scored 24 goals this season, watching his development remains an enjoyable experience for supporters.

5: SING LOUD, SING PROUD

Have you heard it yet? The new terrace anthem in tribute to Solskjaer - Ole's At The Wheel, to the tune of Stone Roses' Waterfall - has become an instant hit among Reds and you can expect to hear countless renditions during Saturday's game. We're expecting a top atmosphere, too, with a rare (and popular!) 15:00 GMT kick-off aligning perfectly alongside our excellent form. A seventh consecutive win would send everybody home with that tune on repeat!

YOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO UNITED V BRIGHTON

Manchester United will be looking for a seventh successive win in all competitions under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when Brighton & Hove Albion visit Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds have been in scintillating form under caretaker manager Solskjaer and will be looking to maintain his maximum Premier League points tally as our bid to climb the table continues.

We beat the Seagulls twice at home last season, in the league and Emirates FA Cup, but lost 3-2 in this season's first meeting, at the Amex Stadium back in August.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of this weekend’s match…

WHAT'S THE TEAM NEWS?
The Reds will be boosted by the return of Eric Bailly, who has served a three-match ban following his red card against Bournemouth last month but fellow defenders Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling are not yet fit enough to return from injury. Solskjaer also confirmed to the media on Friday that Marouane Fellaini is set to be out for three to four weeks with a calf problem but he hopes Alexis Sanchez will be available after the Chilean missed last weekend’s 1-0 win at Tottenham when aggravating his hamstring injury in the FA Cup win over Reading.

HOW ABOUT BRIGHTON?

The Seagulls will once again be without goalkeeper Mathew Ryan and winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh, who are at the Asian Cup with Australia and Iran respectively. The visitors will also be without versatile Brazilian player Bernardo (hamstring) and Colombian forward Jose Izquierdo (knee), while Malian midfielder Yves Bissouma is a doubt after missing last Saturday's 1-0 defeat at home to Liverpool with a hip problem. Experienced Austrian full-back Markus Suttner also joined German club Fortuna Dusseldorf on loan until the end of the season on Friday.

HOW ARE BRIGHTON DOING?
The Seagulls' four-match unbeaten run came to an end last weekend by the narrowest of margins - leaders Liverpool needed a Mohamed Salah penalty to defeat them 1-0. Chris Hughton’s side, who are in their second season in the Premier League, currently sit 13th in the table with 26 points from 22 games so far and are eight points clear of the relegation zone. They have only picked up one point from their last three away league games, drawing 2-2 at West Ham after a 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth and 1-0 loss at Burnley.

WHAT'S OUR RECORD AGAINST BRIGHTON LIKE?
Historically, the Reds have a strong record against the Seagulls, ahead of what will be only our 21st meeting. United have won 12 of the previous 20 encounters, drawing five and losing three. Saturday’s game will be the 10th between the teams at Old Trafford and only the fourth in the Premier League era altogether. The Reds have lost the last two against the Seagulls, both at the Amex Stadium – 3-2 in August and 1-0 in May – but have won the last two at the Theatre of Dreams. Ashley Young’s strike deflected in off Lewis Dunk to give United a 1-0 victory in last season’s corresponding league fixture, before goals from Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic earned a 2-0 win in the FA Cup quarter-final tie.

WHO'S THE REFEREE?
Paul Tierney will take charge of his second United match of the season on Saturday, after also handling our 2-1 victory at Bournemouth in November. The Wigan-based whistler also officiated two Reds games last season - our 4-0 FA Cup win at Yeovil Town and 1-0 defeat at home to West Bromwich Albion. The 38-year-old has issued 68 yellow cards, sent off one player and awarded just one penalty in 20 games in all competitions so far this term. Tierney will be assisted by Simon Beck and Mick McDonough, with Lee Mason acting as the fourth official.
