Default Re: Mason Will John Greenwood

Mason Greenwood can be England's EURO STAR: It's time for Gareth Southgate to get excited about Man United youngster after superb double in rout against Bournemouth

* Mason Greenwood was the name on everyone's lips after Saturday's display
* The Englishman netted a double as United cruised to victory at Old Trafford
* Gareth Southgate could have another exciting youngster in his England squad
* Greenwood's emergence could be a huge boost to England by EURO 2021

It is not easy to steal the limelight at Manchester United these days, such has been the transformation in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s vibrant young team.

Marcus Rashford scored his 20th goal of the season against Bournemouth and so did Anthony Martial. Bruno Fernandes was on target and on song again. Paul Pogba could take a back seat and still watch United score five.

But at the end of another hugely encouraging attacking display, the name on everyone’s lips was Mason Greenwood.

Two more fantastic goals took the 18-year-old’s total to eight in the Premier League this season, the highest scorer of his age in the top flight since Wayne Rooney for Everton in 2003-04.

Mason Greenwood's double over Bournemouth should be getting Gareth Southgate excited. The 18-year-old took his Premier League total to eight in a thumping 5-2 win at Old Trafford

All of Rooney’s nine goals came in the league, however, whereas Greenwood has 15 in all competitions and United could play another 11 games.

Rooney broke into the England squad that season and appeared at Euro 2004. Rashford did the same before Euro 2016, also at the age of 18.

This summer’s Euros would have come too soon for Greenwood, but a 12-month postponement means he will surely be in Gareth Southgate’s plans by next summer.

Solskjaer, for one, has no doubt that the teenager is up to the challenge.

‘When you play for Manchester United, I think that’s a good enough test,’ he said.

‘If you can handle playing for United, then you can handle playing for any team.

‘Mason has the qualities that not many others have, so he could play for the full England team or the Under 21s. He’ll always score goals. He will fill out, so we’ll keep on building him up in the gym and on the pitch.’

Unlike Rooney, Greenwood was not an early developer, but he has bulked up during lockdown.

The eye for goal is still the same, though. He had two chances against Bournemouth and took both, one with his preferred left foot and the other with the right.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes the talent is up to the task following his performances this term. Greenwood has already impressed for England under-21s and could be ready for the big time

The youngster’s progress raises an interesting question over United’s pursuit of Jadon Sancho.

The Borussia Dortmund winger has been earmarked to play on the right of a 4-2-3-1 formation. It was United’s problem position for some time, but not anymore.

Sancho will not come cheap and nor would Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish, another transfer target who would naturally fit into that band of three.

Solskjaer wants good options in every position and will be wary of placing too much burden on Greenwood, but it would be hard to hold him back now.

‘You’ve got no reason not to have confidence in a player like Mason,’ said Rashford. ‘It was never a matter of if he was going to play with us, it was just when. When can we get him involved? Ole has done a terrific job with him.’

Greenwood is the latest English wonderkid to emerge following Jadon Sancho at Dortmund

Greenwood’s goals — drawing United level after Bournemouth had taken a shock lead and pulling them clear when Eddie Howe’s side threatened a comeback at 3-2 — overshadowed a brilliant finish from Martial and Fernandes’ clinical free-kick.

Rashford scored from the penalty spot for his 20th goal of a season that was in danger of being cut short when he was diagnosed with a double back fracture in January.

‘It was definitely difficult news to hear,’ recalled the England striker. ‘I’ve had this injury before, but this time it was quite a bit worse. I want to say how blessed I feel to be back healthy.’

United’s defence did not cover themselves in glory when Junior Stanislas nutmegged Harry Maguire and beat David de Gea at his near post. Later, substitute Eric Bailly handballed to give away a penalty converted by Josh King.

But it was a day to sit back and admire United’s attacking verve, and another demonstration that Solskjaer’s vision is getting closer to reality.

This was the fourth time in the last 16 games that United have scored five goals or more.

Not bad considering they only managed it on three occasions in the first 367 games after Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

‘There’s a massive flood of positivity right now and we want to keep that going,’ added Rashford.

Bournemouth seem to be a team heading in the opposite direction. Confidence has ebbed away and they have taken one point from the last eight games, plunging them deep into relegation trouble.

They face Tottenham on Thursday, quickly followed by Leicester and Manchester City.

‘Games are running out,’ admitted Stanislas. ‘If we’re going to stay in the division we have to start picking up points.

‘We’ll have no excuses. We can’t keep talking — it’s time for action.’

'He's a specialist goalscorer': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Man United starlet Mason Greenwood is a better finisher than Wayne Rooney was at his age after becoming highest-scoring player aged 18 or under in the top-flight since English star

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Mason Greenwood is best finisher he has seen at 18
* Solskjaer says the United starlet is superior finisher to Wayne Rooney at that age
* Greenwood scored a brace as Manchester United won 5-2 against Bournemouth

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer paid tribute to Mason Greenwood's special talent after the teenager hit a stunning double against Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

It took Greenwood's total for the season to 15 and eight in the Premier League – making him the highest-scoring player aged 18 or under in the top-flight since Wayne Rooney scored nine for Everton in the 2003-04 season.

Solskjaer tried to play down comparisons with Rooney but admitted he has not seen a better finisher at that age.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Mason Greenwood is a better finisher than Wayne Rooney was at 18. Solskjaer was full of praise for Greenwood following his brace at home to Bournemouth

'No, I don't think I have,' said the United boss. 'I've seen Wayne Rooney at the same age and Mason is a specialist finisher and specialist goalscorer. He knows exactly what to do with the ball when he's on the pitch. If he shoots he will score, and he is going to get better.

'I don't want to compare Mason to Wazza or Cristiano (Ronaldo), I don't think that's fair. The boy will create his own career and he is doing it his own way.

'They've had fantastic careers, both of them, and I'm sure if Mason keeps on doing the right things, making good decisions, he will have a fantastic career as well. We've always known that there's a special kid there.

'He's a fantastic goal scorer and he scored for us in very important moments of the game. He's got a left foot to come inside, but defenders have to worry about him going outside as he can score on his right.

'We will just nurture him and manage himself and give him more and more minutes.'

Greenwood has shown some hugely encouraging signs for Solskjaer's side during this season

Solskjaer also saw Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford claim their 20th goals of the season in a 5-2 win.

'That's a milestone for everyone,' he added. 'The two of them can settle down a little bit now and don't have to chase that next goal.

'Marcus is on course for his best season, Anthony the same, but there are things they know I want them to keep improving on.'

Bournemouth put up a good fight but a fourth defeat in a row since the restart kept Eddie Howe's side second from bottom with five games left to play.

'We gave it a go but ultimately we lost five goals and it's really tough to take,' said Howe. 'I didn't think the game was over til fourth goal. The Greenwood goal is a killer.

'Since lockdown has been a huge disappointment. We've found it hard to play with the normal rhythm and fight we'd normally show. It's the toughest league in the world and if you're not at your very best you will suffer. That's where we're at the moment.'

'I think he will push Marcus Rashford out of the team': Mason Greenwood will oust team-mate from Manchester United's starting XI if they sign another striker as he's a 'far better clinical finisher', says Glenn Hoddle

* Mason Greenwood is excelling in his first full season in professional football
* The 18-year-old has 15 goals in all competitions for Manchester United this term
* By comparison, his United team-mate Marcus Rashford has 20 goals this season

Marcus Rashford will find himself out of Manchester United's starting XI if they sign a striker due to the talent of Mason Greenwood.

That's the view of former England manager Glenn Hoddle who believes Greenwood is a 'far better clinical finisher' and therefore has the edge.

Greenwood continues to impress in his first full season in professional football with his sublime brace against Bournemouth on Saturday taking his goal tally to 15 in all competitions this term.

Rashford was also on target during that 5-2 win - scoring from the penalty spot to take his tally to 20 in all competitions this campaign. The 22-year-old has missed a large chunk of the season due to a back injury.

Mason Greenwood will force Marcus Rashford out of Man United's XI as he's a better finisher. Rashford has 20 goals in all competitions for United this season, while Greenwood has 15. Glenn Hoddle believes if the club sign another attacker then Greenwood would oust Rashford

Rashford and Greenwood are dovetailing brilliantly on the wings of a front three with Anthony Martial spearheading the attack.

Despite their devastating form, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains determined to bolster his attacking options with Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho a top target.

However, Hoddle believes that if the club do add a striker then it is Rashford of the current three who will miss out due to the precocious talent of Greenwood.

'I think he's [Greenwood] a wonderful player now and he's only going to get better and better,' Hoddle told Premier League Productions.

Greenwood and Rashford have formed a devastating front three with Anthony Martial. Greenwood (left) scored two goals for United at the weekend as he continues to shine

'I'm really impressed with the two feet. I love to see players play with two feet. He's got a right foot and he's got a left foot. I think Phil [Neville] is right about playing him right in a wide berth. Will he end up down the middle? Maybe, maybe not.

'I think he will push Marcus Rashford out of the team. There's a quote. I think he will end up being a far better clinical finisher and in the end I think you're going to have to put this lad in first ahead of anyone else.

'Their front three at the moment is working really well for them, [but] when you look at Martial [and Rashford] they're all wingers really; they want to play wide.

'So if they did go and get a centre forward, I think he could play round a real main focal centre forward and have him playing round there. Wow! He could be anything with the two feet.'

Default Re: Mason Will John Greenwood

Mason Greenwood has grown physically and mentally into a cold-blooded executioner who has already netted more United goals than Falcao, Di Maria and Sanchez COMBINED… this 18-year-old is made for the big stage

* Mason Greenwood scored three goals last week following his weekend double
* The 18-year-old has emerged into one of Man United's biggest attacking threats
* Greenwood strengthened up during lockdown and put on three kg of muscle
* He drives a £50,000 Mercedes but is firmly focussed on his professional career
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described him as the 'best finisher he's ever worked with'

Strange as it may seem for a young man who has fitted so seamlessly into the Manchester United first-team, there was a period last season when Mason Greenwood wasn’t ready for senior football.

Unlike his hero Wayne Rooney, Greenwood wasn’t physically or mentally prepared for the challenge of playing Premier League football in front of packed stadiums at such an early age.

If anything, he was a young 17. A supremely talented boy but one who needed a little more time to make the step up. Very different to the cold-eyed executioner who is now scoring goals for fun.

Mason Greenwood was not ready for senior football at Manchester United last season. But Greenwood is flourishing and scored three goals last week after his double on Saturday. Alexis Sanchez (L) has only scored five goals for United while Angel Di Maria scored just four

Greenwood’s double against Bournemouth on Saturday took his tally to three for the week – plus an excellent assist for Bruno Fernandes at Brighton – and 15 so far for the season in all competitions.

Two more, it’s been noted, than Alexis Sanchez, Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao managed in their combined careers at Old Trafford.

Mentally, his temperament seems tailor-made for the big stage that those who have followed his progress always expected him to grace.

Physically, he is a different animal to the wiry youngster who made his debut in the most testing of circumstances, the dying minutes of United’s dramatic Champions League comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the French capital last year.

A weights programme has seen Greenwood put on three kilogrammes of muscle during lockdown.

Hardly a surprise when you see the dumbbells in his gym at home on a video posted by the club in April showing the 18-year-old running on a treadmill and doing push ups.

Another clip after the squad returned to training at Carrington in May captured a more muscular Greenwood shrugging off a challenge from captain Harry Maguire, arguably the club’s most imposing player.

‘Mason’s looking more and more like a man,’ said manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. ‘He’s still 18 and this lockdown period has done him all the good in the world because, at his age, they do develop and fill out.’

Greenwood made his debut in the dying moments of United's famous win against PSG last year

Greenwood is the boy from Wibsey in West Yorkshire who was discovered by accident when United’s talent scouts turned up to watch someone else playing for his youth team, Idle Juniors, in Bradford.

He progressed quickly through the club’s regional training centres in Halifax and Huddersfield to the main academy hub at The Cliff in Salford where he soon came to the attention of Solskjaer, then United’s reserve-team boss who even asked to have a photo taken with the youngster.

‘I actually do remember when I met him for the first time because my son (Noah) was training at The Cliff as an eight-year-old and Mason was seven,’ recalls Solskjaer.

‘I asked him for the picture because I knew he was going to be a player.’

Greenwood could easily have become an athlete like his older sister Ashton, having once broken the Great Britain record at Under-13 level for the 100 metres.

But he continued to pursue a career in football guided by his father Andrew, an engineer, and mother Melanie while attending Ashton-on-Mersey School.

Quote:
MASON GREENWOOD CAREER STATISTICS

Appearances: 45
Goals: 15
Assists: 5
Debut: March 6 2019, vs PSG
First competitive goal: September 19 2019, vs Astana

Statistics according to Transfermarkt

Greenwood was a boyhood Manchester United fan (pictured at Old Trafford as a child)

He was voted United’s Young Player of the Year last season after scoring 30 goals in 29 games for the Under-18s, Under-19s and Under-23s before becoming the club’s 231st academy player to graduate to the first team – and youngest ever to play for United in the Champions League – when he came on in Paris in March.

A Premier League debut followed before the end of the 2018-19 campaign, as did a first senior goal against Leeds United on tour in Perth a year ago, but it wasn’t until this season that a more mature Greenwood really made his mark.

His progress was rewarded with a new £15,000-a-week contract last October. At this rate, United might find themselves having to re-negotiate sooner rather than later.

There are the usual trappings of fame, of course. Greenwood drives a £50,000 Mercedes GLC Coupe AMG and recently customised it with a silver wrap and red stripe. He was also dating a model, Harriet Robson, for more than a year although they are said to have split during lockdown.

However, club insiders describe him as a down-to-earth teenager who is firmly focussed on his career. ‘He’s a humble boy, he wants to learn, he listens and he works hard,’ said Solskjaer following Greenwood’s two-goal exploits at the weekend.

The United boss has described him as the best finisher he has ever worked with and believes he is ready for the England senior side.

Greenwood in his £50,000 Mercedes GLC Coupe AMG, which he recently had customised. Yet Greenwood has been described as a 'humble boy who listens' by his manager Solskjaer

With United potentially still having 11 games left to play, Greenwood could easily join Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in scoring 20 goals for the season – 55 years after United last had three players hit that mark.

They are emerging as the most lethal attack in the Premier League with Greenwood now ahead of Dan James, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard to play on the right.

It has inevitably raised questions over United’s pursuit of Jadon Sancho with Borussia Dortmund demanding in excess of £90million for the England winger. Should they continue to chase Sancho – or even Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish – when his signing could hold back Greenwood’s progress in the first-team?

United have missed out on Mario Mandzukic, Paulo Dybala, Erling Haaland and Josh King in the last 12 months and yet hit on an exciting attack that fits the club’s attacking DNA and includes two homegrown stars in Greenwood and Rashford.

Greenwood is now ahead of Dan James, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard in the pecking order. Would the arrival of Jadon Sancho or Jack Grealish slow down Greenwood's progress?

The counter argument is that they will need strength in depth to get to the next level. Rashford has only just recovered from a double back fracture, history tell us that Martial’s form can be erratic, and Greenwood will require spells out of the first-team.

Odion Ighalo, 31, is only on loan until the end of January and United’s other options are limited.

Either way, it speaks volumes for Greenwood that the rising young star has reached this point in his career so quickly.

'I can't hide my excitement… this is someone to get carried away by': Gary Neville RAVES about Man United youngster Mason Greenwood and insists frontman is on 'another level' to Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial

* Gary Neville has expressed his excitement over United star Mason Greenwood
* The Manchester United youngster has impressed since the league restart
* Former United captain Neville believes Greenwood has immense levels of talent
* Neville believes that the youngster's potential surpasses Rashford and Martial's

Gary Neville has expressed how excited he is by Mason Greenwood as the Manchester United youngster continues to impress under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The academy product has been in sensational form since the Premier League restart, setting a new record for goals scored by an 18-year-old in the top flight and in doing so, overtaking United legend Wayne Rooney.

A big future is expected of Greenwood, and Sky Sports pundit and former United captain Neville believes the youngster has what it takes to reach the pinnacle of the sport.

'United are proud of their academy full stop,' Neville said before the Southampton game.

'But there's so much excitement. I don't know if you'd notice but I am a miserable sod when analysing players at times, but this lad, I can't hide my excitement.

'Rashford is fantastic, Martial is fantastic, but this kid is another level. Nearly 6ft, he can handle a ball with both feet, he can score goals, he can receive the ball on the half turn, on the back foot, his positioning in terms of understanding where he needs to be is fantastic.

Gary Neville has revealed his excitement over Manchester United's Mason Greenwood. The youngster has impressed with his performances since the Premier League restart. Neville believes that Greenwood is 'another level' to Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford. Greenwood has 18 goals in all competitions from 42 outings this season and yet is still fresh

'He doesn't just play wide, he doesn't just play central, he will be knocking on that door as a centre forward in the next 12 months.

'You obviously want to be a little bit calm because he's a young player and lots can happen but this is someone to get carried away by.

'He's fantastic and someone to be fair Manchester United are lucky to have but obviously have grown and nurtured and be proud to have.'

There had been concerns that Greenwood may suffer from burnout, having made 42 appearances this season, but United boss Solskjaer insists his young talent is feeling fresh.

'At that age you've got so much energy,' said Solskjaer. 'There's no fear, you just want to go and play football. If we had a day off he'd play football with his mates.

'I'm not worried about Mason this season, we just need to look after him his whole career. He's a fantastic boy who loves football and he's getting the result and rewards for his hard work.

'We know what he's capable of and have always trusted him to be a part of this squad and chip in with performances and goals.'

It would be no surprise if Manchester United boy wonder Mason Greenwood becomes a marked man... one more goal against Southampton would have seen the teen striker emulate the likes of George Best and Wayne Rooney

* Mason Greenwood was superbly marshalled by Southampton on Monday night
* It would be no surprise if the Manchester United starlet became a marked man
* His top speed was established on Sky Sports before Oriol Romeu crumpled him
* United, and Greenwood, were forced to physically withstand their opponents

The Sky Sports commentary team had only just established that Mason Greenwood has clocked a faster top speed than both Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial this season when Southampton's Oriol Romeu found a way of slowing down Manchester United's teenage star.

Greenwood laid off a pass inside his own half but was left crumpled on the Old Trafford turf as Romeu arrived late and sank his studs into the youngster's left ankle which twisted nastily.

'He's tried to do him – those can be leg breakers,' said co-commentator Gary Neville having eulogised about the 18-year-old pre-match.

Mason Greenwood was superbly marshalled by Southampton and may become a marked man

'He's gone for the standing leg and it's one that every professional will look at and say "I don't like that". Mason Greenwood is a lucky boy.'

VAR disagreed. So too did Matt Le Tissier, fighting Southampton's corner from the studio.

'I think it was accidental,' said Le Tissier. 'Had there been more force to it, you could have said it was similar to other red cards we've seen this season.

'Romeu is actually slowing down as he gets to him. I'm not sure it's a deliberate attempt.'

One more goal would have seen him emulate the likes of Wayne Rooney and George Best

Either way, it would be no surprise if the boy wonder becomes a marked man. Sixteen goals in all competitions can do that for a player, no matter how old they are.

One more for Greenwood on Monday night would have seen him emulate George Best, Brian Kidd and Wayne Rooney in scoring 17 for United as a teenager.

He didn't get it and for that you can credit the marking job Southampton did on him.

While Rashford and Martial were scoring their 21st goals of the season, Greenwood was subdued on the United right by Ryan Bertrand.

When Romeu floored the teenager just before half-time, Bertrand was again in close proximity.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had warned his players about Southampton's high-energy pressing game – 'I call it a German aggressive rock 'n' roll style of football,' said the United manager beforehand – even though it didn't look like it from the way United conceded the opening goal after Danny Ings robbed Paul Pogba.

But this was an even more aggressive Saints than we are used to seeing.

Jack Stephens was booked for an ugly foul on Bruno Fernandes in the second half and Che Adams risked a caution when he floored Victor Lindelof shortly afterwards.

United withstood the challenge although Luke Shaw limped off after turning an ankle and his replacement Brandon Williams followed with a gashed head.

Greenwood had left the pitch by then thankfully showing no ill-effects from the Romeu incident. It's by no means the last time he will be a target.

'We could be talking about the Premier League record goalscorer': Alan Shearer tips Mason Greenwood to break his landmark 'in 12 or 13 years' after the teenager notched his tenth top-flight goal of the season for Manchester United

* It was the 18-year-old's 17th goal across all competitions during this campaign

Alan Shearer has backed Mason Greenwood to break his record as the all-time highest Premier League goalscorer after notching his tenth top-flight strike of the season for Manchester United.

The 18-year-old thumped home the equaliser against West Ham on Wednesday night to rescue a draw for the Red Devils - his fifth goal in seven games since the football season restarted and there is plenty of excitement around his future.

His seventeenth goal of the campaign saw him draw level with club icons Wayne Rooney and George Best for goals scored by a teenager across all competitions and has confirmed his place as one of the most prolific youngsters in the club's history.

Mason Greenwood netted his tenth top-flight goal of the season against West Ham United. He equalised to make it 1-1 and has matched a record set by Wayne Rooney and George Best. Alan Shearer believes the teenager has the potential to break his Premier League goals record

And Newcastle legend Shearer has stoked the flames, raving about Greenwood's quality and tipping him to become one of the greats of the top flight.

Speaking on Match of the Day after his performance at Old Trafford, he said: 'A potential superstar. I respect the power, he can do it with his left or right foot. He gets it away early and the goalkeepers have no chance.

'I think in 12 or 13 years time we could be talking about the Premier League record goalscorer.

I know there's so many things that can happen in your career but I think he's that good. He's 18 years of age, he's going to get bigger, he's going to get better.'

Shearer set a very high bar to reach after retiring in 2006, and most players haven't managed to get close to his impressive record of 260 goals.

Wayne Rooney sits in second place on 208, while the next best is Andy Cole on 187 and Sergio Aguero on 180.

Many pundits believe Harry Kane is in the best position to finally overtake Shearer, as the Tottenham forward is on 142 goals and only 26 years old.

He believes Greenwood could overtake him in the scoring charts 'in the next 12 or 13 years'. Shearer netted an incredible 260 goals at Southampton, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle. Greenwood is earning rave reviews for his performances after scoring five in his last seven

Greenwood has been earning rave reviews from his manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as well as former United players following his impressive displays.

Dwight Yorke this week claimed he was better than team-mate Marcus Rashford and called him 'a defender's nightmare'.

'He is better than Rashford, looking at his record now,' Yorke told Apollo Tyres.

'You got to understand though he is still 18, at a development stage. Having Ole there, he would guide him along the way.'

'Mason is a defender's nightmare. If you look at us in the last two to three years, we have been passing sideways, now these guys are driving teams back into their own area. He is a fantastic talent.'

JAMIE REDKNAPP: Manchester United tell me Mason Greenwood is the best youngster they've ever seen... and the 18-year-old wonderkid is in safe hands

* Mason Greenwood has had a stellar debut season for Manchester United
* Nicky Butt said that Greenwood is the best youngster the club has ever seen
* Greenwood reminds me of Michael Owen when he first broke onto the scene
* With the talent Manchester United have produced - Greenwood is in safe hands

Manchester United's old youth coach Eric Harrison was a great educator. He was the man whose tough love made the Class of ’92 what they were.

They became household names on his watch but also, as Sir Alex Ferguson said at Harrison’s funeral last year, ‘good human beings’.

Nicky Butt was one of those who benefited from working with Harrison and now he’s the club’s head of first-team development.

I asked Butt a while back whether United had any kids I should keep an eye out for. He named Mason Greenwood. ‘One of the best we’ve ever seen,’ Butt told me.

Now we’re seeing why there was such excitement. United are a club who treat young players properly. They pride themselves on it.

That’s why we can be sure Greenwood is in good hands. They will be in his ear keeping him grounded.

I remember seeing Michael Owen break through, too. In fact I was on the pitch the day he made his Liverpool debut against Wimbledon and became the club’s youngest scorer at 17 years and 144 days.

That was in May 1997 but we’d heard long before that about this boy from the academy who was coming through the ranks.

Mason Greenwood has been described as the best youngster Manchester United has seen. Greenwood is in safe hands at Manchester United, who will keep the 18-year-old grounded. Greenwood says he is left-footed but he appears to be comfortable with his right too

That’s what happens at clubs when they have a special talent on their hands: rumours go around. The only question is whether they can handle the step up. Owen did, and Greenwood is doing so, too.

With Owen, defenders would try to show him on to his left foot because they knew it was his weaker side. Keep the ball away from his right foot and maybe he won’t score.

But Greenwood doesn’t seem to have a weak side. Left foot, right foot, it doesn’t matter.

He likes a stepover but he doesn’t use them for the sake of looking flash. He uses them to unbalance defenders and gain half a yard because that’s all he

Greenwood is being used on the right wing by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at present but with his size and skillset, I see him as a future No 9.

That position belongs to Anthony Martial at the moment but there is plenty of time for Greenwood to make it his own.

Owen always had a good support system around him, from his family and those at the club. He was a sensible lad — he didn’t let anything distract him from football.

Greenwood is at the perfect club for his development, too. They will have people ensuring he is kept on the right track, just as the Class of ’92 were guided so expertly.

At 18 years old, Greenwood can go far, as long as he listens to those around him. Continue at this rate and he will walk into my Team of the Season next year.

'I looked up to Marcus, Jesse and Scott': Mason Greenwood reveals Rashford, Lingard and McTominay has inspired him to break into Manchester United's first team

* Mason Greenwood has revealed three players inspired him at Manchester United
* Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Scott McTominay were with the academy
* Greenwood will play at the empty RheinEnergie Stadion in Cologne on Monday
* United face a 13-day lockdown in Cologne if they go all the way to the final

Mason Greenwood has revealed Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Scott McTominay inspired him to break into Manchester United's first team.

Greenwood touched down in Germany with the rest of his team-mates ahead of Monday's one-off Europa League quarter-final against FC Copenhagen.

And the United sensation has revealed what motivated him in the academy.

Mason Greenwood (L) has revealed Marcus Rashford (right) inspired him in his younger days

'When I was younger, I looked up to Marcus, Jesse, Scott, all of them coming through,' Greenwood told The Sun.

'I was thinking: "If they're doing it, I can do it as well". They give you a nice footpath and a clear way to the first team.

'They're good role models for me, as I was watching them when I was younger — now I'm playing alongside them.

'When you see the other players doing it, you're thinking in the academy: 'Why can't I do it?'

'And that's every young boy's dream in the academy — to get to the first team and be a regular at Man United. It's the best thing you can do at this club.'

Greenwood will play at the empty RheinEnergie Stadion in Cologne which will do little to enhance the sense of occasion either as United face the prospect of three games behind closed doors at the 50,000-seater arena if they reach the final on August 21.

United are faced with a 13-day lockdown in Cologne if they go all the way to the final, not to mention the prospect of slumming it at fourth division Fortuna Koln's training ground.

'I think Mason has done a great season, of course,' Fernandes told the Daily Mirror. 'He's young and he has great numbers this season.
