'It's nice that people are talking about us': Jonny Evans insists Leicester are revelling in role of Premier League title contenders after Aston Villa victory

* Jonny Evans believes Leicester players deserve recognition after latest win
* The defender scored Leicester's third goal in a 4-1 victory over Aston Villa
* Jamie Vardy bagged a brace and has now scored in eight games in a row
* The Foxes set a new club record of eight consecutive top flight wins

Jonny Evans says Leicester are relishing their status as title contenders after Foxes great Gary Lineker warned Liverpool that his old side are ready to challenge them for the crown.

The former England captain tweeted: 'Watch out @LFC, The Foxes are on your tail' after Leicester recorded a club-record eighth successive top-flight victory by winning 4-1 at Aston Villa.

Jamie Vardy's double means he has now scored in eight games in a row, and he could equal his own 2015-16 record of goals in 11 straight league matches on Boxing Day, when Leicester face Liverpool at King Power Stadium.

'It's good (to be talked about as contenders),' said Evans, who won the title three times with Manchester United. 'People want recognition for how they're playing, everyone likes to be talked up a bit. It's nice that people are talking about us.

'We're up there, we're challenging and playing well. Probably now people will start talking more about that. There's a long way to go but we're all enjoying it which is a big factor. There's a great spirit about the club.'

Vardy opened the scoring in the first half and Kelechi Iheanacho doubled Leicester's lead before Jack Grealish struck in first-half stoppage time, but second-half goals from Evans and Vardy made the win emphatic.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers said: 'It was a real historical day for us. To surpass the club record of straight wins in the top-flight was fantastic.. And (it as) a performance to match that.'

Rodgers has been careful to play down his side's title chances until now, but he could not resist a subtle reference to the fact they have been overlooked by some.

He added: 'After Manchester United won at Manchester City on Saturday the caption comes up on TV about how far City are away from Liverpool. It doesn't really rile us. It's part of the game I suppose.'

Villa boss Dean Smith is looking over his shoulder, meanwhile, with his team above the bottom three on goal difference alone.

He felt aggrieved that VAR had not checked Evans' goal for what he said was a push on Ahmed Elmohamady, and could also lose Tyrone Mings for a significant period with a hamstring injury.

Mings was wrongly allowed to play on initially after the injury and was unable to move freely to close down Vardy before the first goal.

Smith said: 'We conceded 23 chances and you can't expect to win games when you do that. Our defensive structure has to be better, individually we have to be better.'

Leicester WILL offer defender Jonny Evans a new contract this summer with manager Brendan Rodgers confident of keeping 32-year-old

* Leicester will open talks with Jonny Evans over a new contract this summer
* Evans has just one year left on his current contract but is key to the Foxes
* Brendan Rodgers is confident of keeping Evans at the club for the long term

Leicester City will thrash out a new contract for Jonny Evans this summer.

The central defender, who has one year left on his current deal, has started every Premier League game this season.

Negotiations over fresh terms are pencilled in once this season ends and Brendan Rodgers appears confident of retaining the 32-year-old.

'It's something we're comfortable with. He's a brilliant player and I've got a really good relationship with him,' Rodgers said.

'It's one that we and he will have a look at in the summer. He didn't want anything to disrupt our game and his form. He's clearly a player I'd love to keep.

'He's an outstanding player and has played at the highest level. To have that experience and quality around will be invaluable for us going forward.'

Leicester have faltered since the restart, struggling for goals during league draws against Brighton and Watford before going out of the FA Cup with defeat by Chelsea on Sunday.

The Foxes need victory when they face Everton on Wednesday night in a bid to hold off the chasing pack for Champions League qualification - although may head to Goodison Park without midfielder James Maddison.

Maddison is a doubt with a hip injury sustained last Friday. 'It's not too serious,' Rodgers added. 'He's had an injection, had some treatment on it, and we'll see how that looks.'

Manchester United 'eye shock move to bring Jonny Evans BACK to Old Trafford'... with the defender's Leicester contact set to expire in seven months

* Jonny Evans's Leicester deal expires next summer, with no new contract agreed
* The experienced defender is free to speak to clubs about a move from January
* Manchester United are reportedly considering bringing him back on a free
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still fond of the player who came through the academy

Jonny Evans could be going back to his roots next summer, with his boyhood club Manchester United reportedly plotting to resign the defender.

The Northern Irishman played 198 matches for United after rising through their academy, earning a Champions League winners medal and three Premier League titles before leaving for West Brom in 2015.

Evans earned praise for a rock solid season at Leicester last term, playing 90 minutes in all but two Premier League matches in Brendan Rodgers' side, falling painfully short of Champions League qualification.

Jonny Evans could make a surprise return to former club Manchester United next summer. The centre-back came through United's academy before leaving in 2015 for West Brom. Evans has yet to agree a new deal at Leicester, with only seven months left on his contract

Despite his impressive 2019-20 Evans is yet to agree a new deal at the King Power with just seven months remaining on his contact and little more than a month until he can open discussions for a free transfer next summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and assistant Mike Phelan are among United staff who still have 'plenty of time' for Evans, according to the Sun, with the club closely monitoring his contract situation.

Evans is keen to stay at Leicester, saying in October: 'I have really enjoyed my time here.

There are still big question marks over Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof in United's defence. Evans is reportedly still liked by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whois keen to bolster his defence

'There's been nothing formal in terms of contract talks but if we can come to an agreement I'm sure it won't be a problem and it will be sorted soon.'

However, United could pounce if a deal isn't struck soon, with Solskjaer reportedly keen to add a left-sided centre-half to his squad.

The Norwegian is still yet to fix the Red Devils' leaky defence, as questions persist over former Foxes man Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof at the back.

'He should still be here NOW!': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rues Louis van Gaal's decision to let Jonny Evans leave Manchester United in 2015 as he prepares to face Leicester City defender in FA Cup quarter-final clash

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United still 'have feelings' for Jonny Evans
* Solskjaer claims he wants to build next United youth side on players like Evans
* United have spent a total of £144million on central defenders in recent years
* The club are expected to sign another centre-back to partner Harry Maguire

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Leicester defender Jonny Evans should still be lining up for the Old Trafford club.

Solskjaer was still a United player when the Northern Ireland international was coming through the club's academy, before going on to make his senior debut in 2007.

According to Goal.com Solskjaer believes the 33-year-old, who played more than 200 games for United before he was sold to West Brom in 2015, should still be at the club.

'You know, Jonny Evans should have been a Manchester United player now, of course,' Solskjaer said ahead of United's FA Cup quarter-final against Leicester on Sunday.

'But sometimes football takes you other places when changes in management happen.

'I'm sure that Jonny Evans has feelings for Manchester United and we have feelings for him too.

'So it is a pleasure to see him playing as well as he does and we just have to move on.

'But of course, local lads - I call them local lads, you know what I mean - we want to build our next youth team on players like Jonny Evans, if you like.

Jonny Evans should still be a Manchester United player according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. United boss Solskjaer wants to build their next youth team on players like Evans. Jonny Evans (left) with Juan Mata, he played for Manchester United between 2006-2015

'With Mason Greenwood, Scott McTominay and Dean Henderson and all of the lads, added on with top quality players of course.'

Since the decision was taken by then United manager Louis van Gaal to sell Evans in 2015, the centre-back position has been a problem for the club.

Harry Maguire, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof cost a combined total £144million and only Red Devils captain Maguire has subsequently established himself in United's defence.

As a result, Solskjaer is set to go into the market this summer for another centre back to partner his skipper.

mungkin kalo duet Maguire-Evans lebih oke daripada Maguire-Lindelof, sayang Evans dijual. mungkin jodohnya Maguire duet sama Jones

Northern Ireland boss Ian Barraclough is 'worried' about long-term effects of Jonny Evans' foot injury and insists defender 'must think of his future beyond football'

* Jonny Evans is still suffering with the long-term effects of a foot injury
* Northern Ireland boss Ian Barraclough is concerned about his defender
* He warned that Evans has to think about his life after football regarding injury

Jonny Evans will miss Northern Ireland's World Cup qualifier in Bulgaria on Tuesday night, leaving manager Ian Baraclough worried over the long-term effects of a foot injury.

Evans has not played for his country since a goalless draw at home to the Bulgarians in March due to a problem with the plantar fascia ligament, and will miss his seventh international in a row when the two teams meet again in Sofia.

Although the 33-year-old defender could make only his fourth appearance of the season for Leicester at home to his former club Manchester United on Saturday, Baraclough is concerned over the situation.

'Jonny hasn't travelled with us, that won't be happening,' said Baraclough. 'We did have a conversation that he might join up late in the camp, but it wasn't a possibility.

Leicester and Northern Ireland star Jonny Evans is suffering with effects from a foot injury. Evans needs to think about his life after football, according to Ian Barraclough

'It's worrying for everybody really, whether that's myself, Leicester or Jonny himself.

'He has not only got to think about his foot for the rest of his career but for after football as well.'

Saturday's defeat to Switzerland has all but killed off Northern Ireland's hopes of qualifying from Group C, but Baraclough has urged his players not to give up.

'We want to finish as high as possible in case anyone slips up,' he added.
