26 October 1996 - Southampton 6-3 Manchester United
Eyal Berkovic and Egil Ostenstad scored two goals apiece as Southampton won 6-3 and inflicted a second heavy Barclays Premier League defeat on Manchester United inside six days.

The visitors, who had lost 5-0 at league leaders Newcastle United the previous Sunday, went in at the break 3-1 down and a man down following the sending-off of Roy Keane. Although they halved the deficit early in the second half, three goals in the final eight minutes ended their hopes of a successful comeback and left the champions five points behind new leaders Arsenal.

United had been beaten 3-1 on their previous visit to the Dell, when even a half-time change of shirts did not affect the outcome. But their kit proved irrelevant on this occasion as once again they were second best to the Saints.

Ostenstad and Berkovic, each playing only their third matches for Southampton, combined to put their new club ahead in the sixth minute. Norway striker Ostenstad had a shot parried by Peter Schmeichel before Berkovic fired home the rebound.

Keane, who had picked up an early booking for dissent, was dismissed for a second yellow card following a foul on Claus Lundekvam. Matt Le Tissier doubled the lead in the 35th minute, scoring for the fourth successive Barclays Premier League match and fifth fixture in a row overall, when he collected a pass from Berkovic and skipped past two defenders before lifting the ball over Schmeichel from just outside the penalty area.

David Beckham pulled one back in the 41st minute, with his fourth BPL goal of the season, when he curled a 25-yard free-kick into the top corner. But on the stroke of half-time the Saints restored their two-goal advantage when Berkovic released Ostenstad down the left and he beat David May before driving a low shot into the far corner.

United were given hope in the 56th minute when May headed his first goal of the season from another Beckham free-kick. Berkovic made the match safe in the 83rd minute when his 20-yard volley flew into the top corner after the visitors had failed to clear their lines properly at a Le Tissier corner.

Six minutes later, the midfielder then threaded a perfect through ball to Ostenstad, who slid his shot past Schmeichel. Paul Scholes immediately pulled another goal back at the second attempt from an Eric Cantona corner but Southampton had the final say when Ostenstad raced clear and rounded Schmeichel before his shot was turned into his own net by United’s Phil Neville.

After losing their next Barclays Premier League match, at home to Chelsea, United suffered just two league defeats in the rest of the campaign as they bounced back to win the title for the fourth time in five seasons. Southampton finished 16th, their fourth bottom half of the table placing in the first five years of the competition.

26 October 1863
Not Just A Football Association, It's THE Football Association

On 26 October 1863, English football's governing body, the Football Association, held its first meeting, making it the oldest national football association in the world.

Twelve clubs sent representatives to the meeting, held at Freemasons' Tavern on Long Acre, Covent Garden, London, in order to agree on a common set of rules. The clubs were Barnes, Civil Service, Crusaders, Forest of Leytonstone, No Names Club (Kilburn), Crystal Palace, Blackheath, Kensington School, Percival House (Blackheath), Surbiton, Blackheath Proprietary School, and Charterhouse (who declined the offer to join).

Prior to the creation of the Football Association, football clubs in England operated under different sets of rules, including the Cambridge Rules, which were used by many clubs throughout the nation, and the Sheffield Rules, which dominated the northeast. Although those two sets of rules contained slight differences, they both prohibited hacking, which would prove to be a point of contention for the new FA.

Indeed, when the FA ultimately adopted a set of rules that closely mirrored the Cambridge Rules, several clubs chose to form a separate Rugby Football Union that allowed hacking. Thus the Football Association was instrumental in triggering the split between association football (or "soccer") and rugby.

The FA currently oversees all association football competitions in England and is in charge of the English men's and women's national teams. As the first football association in history, it is the only one not to include its nationality in its name.

27 October 2007 - Chelsea 6-0 Manchester City

Didier Drogba was on target twice as Chelsea thrashed Manchester City to record their third consecutive Barclays Premier League victory.

Drogba and Michael Essien scored in the first half while the Ivory Coast international struck again after the interval along with Joe Cole, Salomon Kalou and substitute Andriy Shevchenko.

The result moved Chelsea three places up into fourth and left them just a point behind third-placed City, who owed their lofty position in the table to a 100% home record.

After Blues goalkeeper Petr Cech had saved from Elano early on, Essien gave the hosts a 16th-minute lead when he converted a Frank Lampard pass for his second goal of the season. Lampard also created the second for Drogba, who beat Micah Richards before firing home his third BPL goal of the campaign and fifth overall.

City goalkeeper Joe Hart denied Kalou before superbly blocking a shot from Lampard only for Drogba to put away the rebound to make it 3-0 in the 56th minute.

Almost immediately the same combination nearly produced a fourth goal, and a third from Drogba, but the striker fired over after Hart had blocked another Lampard effort.

On the hour mark Cole did score the fourth, and his first in the BPL since April 2006, when he raced clear after a Drogba header to slot the ball past Hart.

Kalou ran on to an Essien pass and finished from an acute angle to make it 5-0 in the 75th minute with his second top-flight goal of the season before Shevchenko, who replaced Cole in the 67th minute, netted his first BPL strike of the campaign after a pass by Drogba.

Chelsea manager Avram Grant, who replaced Jose Mourinho at the helm the previous month, said: "I smiled and enjoyed it for the winning and the way of the winning."

The Stamford Bridge club went on to finish as runners-up to Manchester United for the second successive season while Man City earned ninth place, their first top half of the table finish for three years.

27 October 2005 - England Does Not Suffer From Triskaidekaphobia

On 27 October 2005, England defeated Hungary 0-13 in a qualifying match for the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup.

The two sides met in Tapolca, Hungary for their second match in UEFA Group 5. Coincidentally, both teams' previous match had been against Austria, with England emerging 1-4 victors and Hungary losing 0-3.

Against Hungary, England got off to a quick start with a 3rd minute goal from striker Kelly Smith (pictured) and another in the 5th minute from midfielder Rachel Yankey. Both Smith and Yankey had started their careers with Arsenal Ladies, whom they had recently rejoined after brief spells with the New Jersey Wildcats in the USL W-League.

The match against Hungary was completely one-sided from start to finish, with a total of eight English players finding the back of the net: Smith (3', 43', 80'), Yankey (5'), forward Eniola Aluko (12', 50'), full back/winger Alex Scott (15', 38'), midfielder Katie Chapman (30'), midfielder Fara Williams (61', 88'), substitute Jo Potter (75'), and striker Jody Handley (79').

The teams finished qualification at opposite ends of the table, with England on top and Hungary at the bottom. England advanced to the 2007 World Cup quarterfinals, where they were eliminated by the United States.

The win against Hungary set the largest margin of victory in the history of the English women's team (and tied the record scoreline for the English men's team, who defeated Ireland 0-13 in Belfast on 18 February 1882).

On 28 October 1998, 17-year old center back John Terry made his first appearance for Chelsea's senior team, coming on as a second-half substitute in a League Cup match against Aston Villa. Chelsea won 4-1.

Terry was born in London on 7 December 1980 and played for the Chelsea youth team from 1995 to 1998. He signed his professional contract with the Blues for the 1998-99 season, making 6 appearances.

In 2004, new manager Jose Mourinho handed the captain's armband to Terry, who rewarded the decision by leading Chelsea to back to back league titles in 2005 and 2006.

Apart from a brief loan spell with Nottingham Forest in the 1999-2000 season, Terry has spent his entire club career with Chelsea. Through the 2008-09 season, he had made 404 appearances for the London club. He added a third league title in 2010 and has also won the Champions League (2012), five FA Cups (2000, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012), two League Cups (2005, 2007), and two Community Shields (2005, 2009).

Hat-Trick gemilang Robin van Persie Jinakkan #Chelsea
- 29 Oktober 2011

Belum puas.

29 October 2008 - Arsenal 4-4 Tottenham Hotspur

Aaron Lennon struck in injury-time to earn Tottenham Hotspur thrilling 4-4 draw with north London rivals Arsenal in Harry Redknapp's second Barclays Premier League match as Spurs manager.

Arsenal had led 4-2 with a little more than 20 minutes to go but an 89th minute goal from Jermaine Jenas set up a grandstand finish before Lennon completed the comeback.

The result failed to lift Spurs off the bottom of the BPL table, but it maintained former Portsmouth manager Redknapp's unbeaten start to his reign, following a 2-0 win at home to Bolton Wanderers the previous weekend.

Former Arsenal trainee David Bentley gave Spurs the lead in the 13th minute when he collected a header from Tom Huddlestone and scored with a spectacular 40-yard volley.

Arsenal summer signing Mikael Silvestre also notched his first top-flight goal for his new club when he equalised by heading home Robin van Persie's 37th minute corner.

His central defensive partner William Gallas put the Gunners ahead immediately after half-time when he glanced in a header from a Van Persie free-kick.

Van Persie was again the instigator when Arsenal moved 3-1 ahead in the 64th minute. He released Samir Nasri, who lifted the ball over goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes and Emmanuel Adebayor beat Alan Hutton to prod it home for his fifth league goal of the season.

Spurs substitute Darren Bent gave his side hope when he scored his fifth top flight goal of the campaign two minutes after coming on, when goalkeeper Manuel Almunia fumbled a shot from Huddlestone. But 60 seconds later the contest seemed to be over when Van Persie scored the goal he deserved with a powerful strike from an Adebayor pass.

Spurs refused to give up and with one minute of normal time remaining, Jenas curled the ball home to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Four minutes of injury-time were nearly up when substitute Lennon slammed home a rebound after Luka Modric's shot was deflected on to an upright to send the visiting fans into ecstasy.

"We conceded sloppy goals but we never gave up, we showed a never-say-die attitude and came back brilliantly," Redknapp said. "It was a fantastic performance and a great result in the end."

Arsenal went on to end the season in fourth place while Redknapp steered Spurs away from danger as they earned an impressive eighth place finish.

Looking back at Barclays Premier League history, we recall Leicester's shock win at Filbert Street
31 October 1998 - Leicester City 1-0 Liverpool

Tony Cottee headed the only goal as Leicester City earned victory over Liverpool and moved level on points with their visitors in the Barclays Premier League table.

The former Everton striker scored against his old Merseyside rivals 13 minutes from time to move the Foxes up to seventh in the table, only behind fourth-placed Liverpool on goal difference.

Liverpool dominated the early stages of the match but Steve McManaman, Paul Ince and Michael Owen were unable to turn the visitors' possession into goals. Their best opportunity came in the second half but Karlheinz Riedle could only shoot straight at Leicester goalkeeper Kasey Keller.

Leicester's goal was worthy of winning any match. Neil Lennon played a pinpoint through ball to England Under-21 striker Emile Heskey, who beat Steve Staunton and sent in a firm cross which Cottee headed home from close range.

A tough afternoon for the Reds was complete when Jason McAteer was sent off in the 85th minute after picking up a second booking for a late challenge on Lennon. And Cottee almost doubled the lead on the stroke of full-time but his effort from Steve Guppy's centre was saved by Liverpool goalkeeper David James.

O'Neill was full of praise for 33-year-old Cottee, saying: "He's been magnificent for us and played every match. We give him the time off he needs to recuperate and we don't overwork him in training."

Leicester ended the season in 10th position in the BPL table, following a ninth place the previous campaign, while Liverpool finished seventh.

2 November 2013 - Manchester City 7-0 Norwich City

Manchester City recorded their biggest win in the Barclays Premier League and kept up their 100% home league record for the season as they routed Norwich City 7-0 at Etihad Stadium.

The emphatic victory saw the hosts climb three places in the table to fourth and dropped the Canaries into the relegation zone.

Norwich were the last team to beat Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in May 2013 but never looked likely to repeat that feat after the hosts scored four times in 20 first-half minutes.

They went ahead in the 16th minute when David Silva's shot was blocked and Sergio Aguero's effort from the rebound hit Bradley Johnson's boot and looped over helpless goalkeeper John Ruddy.

Four minutes later, the same two Manchester City players were involved again as Aguero charged into the penalty area and pulled the ball back to Silva to score his third goal of the season.

In the 25th minute it was 3-0 when Matija Nastastic's header from a Samir Nasri corner was deflected in off the Canaries' Russell Martin for a second own goal.

Summer signing Alvaro Negredo then netted for the hosts when he converted a pass by Aguero, who had been sent clear by Yaya Toure.

Toure curled in a brilliant 20-yard free-kick over the Norwich wall on the hour mark and 11 minutes later Aguero made it 6-0 after he pounced on a poor clearance by Sebastien Bassong.

Edin Dzeko completed the scoring in the 86th minute with a shot from inside the area for his third Barclays Premier League goal of the campaign.

Manchester City went on to win 17 of their 19 home matches as they were crowned BPL champions for the second time in three campaigns.

But Norwich's three-season stay in the top flight was ended when they finished 18th in the table, three points adrift of safety.
