Default Re: UEFA Champions League - News and Rumors

Manchester United earned the least Champions League revenue of all English clubs this year... and may end up with less than half Liverpool's total

* Manchester United exited this season's Champions League at the last-16 stage
* It means United earned £37m from their participation in this year's competition
* Semi-finalists Liverpool could earn £72m if they win the Champions League final
* Chelsea earned £55m, Manchester City £54m and Tottenham £52m this season

Manchester United have earned the least amount of revenue out of all English clubs from their participation in this season's Champions League.

Jose Mourinho's side raked in £37million, £15m less than Tottenham despite exiting at the same stage of the competition as the north London side.

The reason behind the difference in revenue is due to United sealing their spot in the 2017-18 Champions League by winning last season's Europa League.

Manchester United's last-16 exit to Sevilla sees them earn just £37million from Europe this year

Semi-finalists Liverpool have earned £57m, the most out of the five English teams involved in this year's instalment, with that figure set to rise even further.

If Liverpool beat Roma in the upcoming semi-final and win the final in Kiev they could be set for a £71.7m Champions League windfall.

Of the other three Premier League sides who took part in this year's competition, Chelsea earned £55m, Manchester City £54m and Tottenham £52m.

Quote:
ENGLISH CLUBS' CL REVENUE 2017-18

Liverpool - £57m*

Chelsea - £55m

Manchester City - £54m

Tottenham - £52m

Manchester United - £37m

*Could potentially earn up to £71.7m
The five English clubs' revenue comes in part from them dividing up BT Sport's £119m deal to broadcast the Champions League.

A similar deal in Italy means Roma would receive more should they win the competition because only three Serie A sides — Roma, Napoli and Juventus — were involved this season.

The other semi-finalists, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, would make £75m each should they go all the way and win the Kiev final.

The manner in which fees are determined is also dependent on group stage results and whether or not clubs qualified through the Champions League play-offs.

United were dumped out of Europe's premier club competition by Sevilla in the last-16 with Wissam Ben Yedder's brace securing a shock win for the Spaniards at Old Trafford.

Chelsea lost to Barcelona in the last-16, Tottenham fell to Juventus at the same stage and Liverpool overcame City in the quarter-finals.

Sky Sports gear up for a bid to regain Champions League rights from BT

* Sky Sports' focus on UEFA Nations League may signify Champions League return
* Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville are involved in Sky's Nations League coverage
* There are doubts over whether BT will bid another £1billion-plus after 2021

Sky Sports' purchase of the new Nations League rights from UEFA is seen as a strong sign that they plan to bid to regain the Champions League next year.

Relationships between UEFA and Sky hit rock bottom after the Champions League was snatched away from them by BT in 2015 for the small matter of £897million. Sky Sports supremo Barney Francis famously claimed that their subscription rivals had wildly overspent and that the Premier League was far more popular with Sky viewers.

BT retained the rights until 2021 at the last auction in 2017, paying £1.18billion over three years. But there are big doubts whether BT, who have made huge job cuts this year and face pressure from shareholders over massive spending on sports rights, will be prepared to invest another billion-plus when the next three-year CL tender comes around in 2019.

Sky Sports are expected to reignite their interest in purchasing Champions League rights

And Sky are now on much better terms with UEFA, having bought all the home nations' matches in the Nations League, which were sold centrally by the European football ruling body rather than by the individual associations.

Sky will be putting their A team on Nations League duty, with Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher plus newcomer Jermain Defoe involved in Saturday's coverage of England's opening game against Spain at Wembley

Meanwhile, ITV Sport are desperately in need of some live football. Sky's Nations League deal, which includes the two England friendlies this autumn against the USA and Switzerland, means ITV have no live football until England's 2020 European Championship qualifiers start next March.

Hundreds of Manchester United season-ticket holders being moved out of their seats for Valencia clash in Champions League

* Some Manchester United season-ticket holders being moved for Valencia game
* The move is instigated by UEFA's rules concerning ticket allocations
* Valencia are set to take full allocation of 3,800 tickets for game on October 2

Hundreds of Manchester United season-ticket holders are being moved out of their seats for the Champions League clash with Valencia.

Some who sit near the away fans in one quadrant of Old Trafford are unhappy at the move, instigated by UEFA's allocation rules.

United were told visiting teams must be offered 3,800 tickets in Europe this season, up from 3,000. Valencia are set to take the full amount when they arrive on October 2.

That means a selection of home regulars will be rehoused given the difficult logistics inside Old Trafford. United warned those renewing season tickets of this eventuality in a letter over the summer.

In addition to the letter, United's website reads: 'The club may from time to time relocate a ticket holder from their usual seat to an alternative seat where this is required.

'The club cannot guarantee that the ticket holder's usual seat will be available for every home cup match.'

New Champions League ball design leaked for 2019-20 campaign group stage which will cost £130

* The new design features traditional stars that always feature on the match ball
* It will be released in shops in August 2019 and cost around €150 (£130)
* Ball will be used in the group stages, with another used for knockout stages

The Champions League ball for the 2019-20 season has been leaked.

The new design features the traditional stars that always feature on the match ball for Europe's elite club competition along with a new colourful design on the other panels.

Flashes of yellow, red, blue and green all feature across the new ball, which will reach shops in August 2019 and cost around €150 (£130).

The Champions League ball designed by Adidas for the 2019-20 season has been leaked. New design features the traditional stars that always feature on the ball for the competition

It will be used in the group stages of next season's competition, with another design to feature for the knockout rounds.

The ball features the Adidas logo and the Champions League branding.

Unlike this season's ball, the star panels are not connected together at the edges but instead overlap one another. This is likely to improve durability on the ball.

The materials and the upper structure used are the same as those that featured on the ball for the 2018 World Cup, the Adidas Telstar 18.

Default Re: UEFA Champions League - News and Rumors

UEFA announce huge prize pot of £2.3bn for teams in European competitions next season

* Champions League, Europa League and Super Cup to have £2.3bn prize fund
* Almost £3billion revenue expected to be generated from European competitions
* There will be another £600million in solidarity payments and costs for UEFA
* Liverpool and Chelsea will earn just over £3million each for playing in Super Cup
\\Teams competing in UEFA's lucrative club competitions next season will share a total prize fund of £2.3billion, European football's governing body has confirmed.

Like last season, the Champions League, Europa League and Super Cup are estimated to generate almost £3billion in total revenues but UEFA's costs and 'solidarity payments' for clubs that fail to reach the group stages will add up to more than £600million.

As a result, clubs competing in the Champions League and next month's Super Cup will share more than £1.8billion, with the rest reserved for the Europa League.

Additionally, Liverpool and Chelsea will earn just over £3million each for reaching the Super Cup in Istanbul on August 14, with the winners collecting an extra £900,000.

Estimating how much the winners of each competition might earn is complicated, as almost half of the prize money is distributed on the basis of a club's performance in Europe over the last decade and how other clubs from the same country fare.

But if one of Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City or Spurs lift the Champions League trophy in Istanbul next May, they can expect to match the £100million or so the Reds earned last season for winning the competition for a sixth time.

UEFA will hand out around £3.2billion in prize money for European competitions next season

By comparison, a Europa League win in Gdansk next spring would be worth about £35million to Arsenal, Manchester United or Wolves, the same amount Chelsea earned by beating Arsenal in Baku last season.

Working out how much the various clubs from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales might earn is more complicated, as all of those have qualifying rounds to navigate but also very different 10-year 'performance coefficients' and market pools.

However, if Celtic were to reach the fourth round of Champions League play-offs but then lose, missing out on qualification to the group stages, they would receive a guaranteed £4.5million.

But if they could get through that round and join the English quartet in the group stages, that is when the big money starts to come as the 32 clubs all get more than £13million in 'starting fees', plus £2.4million for a win and £800,000 for a draw.

The prize money in the knock-out rounds ramps up from £8.5million for each club in the last 16, to £9.4million in the last eight, £10.8million in semi-finals, £13.5million in the final and an extra £3.6million to the winner.

As mentioned, 30 per cent of the prize fund - £525million - is then dished out according to each club's record in Europe over the last 10 years. This is done by dividing the pot into 'coefficient shares', with the top-ranked club, currently Real Madrid, getting 32 of these £1million shares and the 32nd-ranked club receiving one.

Chelsea are currently England's best-ranked club in fifth place, with United sixth, Arsenal ninth, Liverpool 12th, City 14th and Spurs 21st. Celtic are the best-ranked Scottish club in 45th.

The market pool allocation represents 15 per cent of the total prize fund but is based on even more variables than the performance coefficients, as each club's payment depends on how much money domestic broadcasters have paid UEFA for its rights and how far other teams from their country progress.

Payments in the Europa League are based on the same formulas but are worth significantly less than the equivalent Champions League amounts.

Adidas unveil new multi-coloured ball which will be used by biggest stars in the Champions League group stage

* Adidas have released their new ball ahead of Champions League group stage
* A mixture of blues, fluorescent oranges and yellows make up the colour scheme
* The striking multi-coloured ball will only be used during the group stage

There will be a visible difference to proceedings when the game's biggest stars kick-off their Champions League campaigns on Tuesday night.

Adidas have stepped up their game, as they do every campaign, by designing a new multi-coloured ball ahead of the eagerly-anticipated group stage.

The German manufacturers have opted to keep the customary theme for the new season, with the famous star-shaped panels remaining on the ball. However they are now bigger in size with solid white and bold black outlines.

But there are clear differences too as adidas have decided to opt for a striking multi-coloured design.

A mixture of blues, fluorescent oranges and yellows make up the colour scheme for this campaign's ball.

Meanwhile, the texture of the ball is seamless and thermally bonded, which should help players during the group stages.

This design helps to increase accuracy - giving a truer touch when receiving a pass.

The colourful ball will only be used for the group stage as adidas will release an official one for the knockout stages early next year.

The 2019 UEFA Champion's League group stage official match ball is available now from adidas' official website.

The ball will make its debut on Tuesday night with some eagerly-anticipated clashes in store.

Champions League holders Liverpool travel to Napoli while Borussia Dortmund host Barcelona, with Lionel Messi set to return after recovering from a calf injury.

Meanwhile, Wednesday's biggest fixtures see Atletico Madrid take on Juventus while Paris Saint-Germain host Real Madrid.

Wembley set to host Champions League final for third time in 12 years as UEFA plan to award the 2023 showpiece to London again

* Wembley is expected to be named the 2023 Champions League Final venue
* The 90,000-capacity stadium also hosted the final in 2011 and 2013
* St Petersburg will be named 2021 host and Munich's Allianz Arena the 2022 host

UEFA is expected to confirm Wembley as the host for the Champions League final in 2023 next week.

The body's president Aleksander Ceferin is also set to confirm St Petersburg and Munich will host the finals in 2021 and 2022 respectively when he speaks at a UEFA meeting in his native Slovenia.

It will be the third time in 12 years that the final will be held at Wembley, and the sixth time since the turn of the millennium that it is on British soil.

Wembley is set to be announced as the host stadium for the 2023 Champions League Final

Glasgow's Hampden Park hosted Real Madrid's ninth European Cup win in 2002, AC Milan beat Juventus on penalties at Old Trafford in Manchester a year later, and Madrid won again in 2017, against Juventus at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

Wembley also hosted the Champions League final in 2011, when Barcelona beat Manchester United and 2013, when Bayern Munich won an all-German clash against Borussia Dortmund.

While last season's showpiece was held at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium in Madrid, the 2020 final will be held in Istanbul at the Ataturk Stadium, where Liverpool famously beat AC Milan on penalties in the 2005 final.
