YOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO UNITED V READING

Manchester United kick off the club's Emirates FA Cup campaign when Championship side Reading travel to Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds also faced the Royals in the third round in 2016/17 and ran out 4-0 winners, thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford (2).

United will be looking to maintain the winning start under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, by earning a fifth consecutive victory in all competitions, while the ultimate aim is to go one better than last term in the FA Cup. If the Reds can go from being runners-up to Chelsea in the final to winners at Wembley this May, it would see the club equalling Arsenal's all-time record of 13 triumphs.

Here's everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off…

WHAT'S THE TEAM NEWS?
The Reds were boosted by the return of Alexis Sanchez as a second-half substitute in Wednesday night's 2-0 win at Newcastle after several weeks out with a hamstring injury. Chris Smalling is set to be absent again as he recovers from a sore foot, while fellow defender Eric Bailly will sit out the second game of his three-match ban following his red card against Bournemouth last weekend. Marcos Rojo and Scott McTominay have stepped up their involvement in training following recent injuries and could be involved. With Saturday's match being our fifth in a busy two-week period, Solskjaer could be tempted to make full use of his squad against Reading and has previously suggested he will give every player an opportunity to get minutes under their belts.

HOW ABOUT READING?
The Royals could welcome back defenders Chris Gunter and Liam Moore. The latter returned from injury in their last outing against Swansea City but was only fit enough for a place on the bench, while Gunter has not played since a 1-1 draw against Rotherham on 15 December. However, the visitors will be without Leandro Bacuna and former United defender Tyler Blackett - both of whom are suspended following red cards against Millwall. Long-term absentees Paul McShane, Saeid Ezatolahi and Jordan Obita will also miss the game through injury.

HOW ARE THE ROYALS DOING?
Reading are struggling in the Championship and are currently 23rd in the table, having picked up just 20 points from their 26 league games so far. Last time out, the Royals were beaten 4-1 at home by Swansea City - their third defeat in the last four matches. In fact, Reading’s last win came way back on 3 November - in a 3-2 victory against Bristol City.

WHO IS THEIR MANAGER?
Saturday's tie will represent a fourth match in charge for Jose Gomes, who replaced Paul Clement in the hotseat at the Madejski Stadium last month. The Portuguese coach has drawn one and lost two of his previous three games in charge. Gomes has an extensive CV that has seen him manage in Portugal, Hungary, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

WHAT'S OUR RECORD AGAINST READING?
We have previously faced the Berkshire outfit on 20 occasions in all competitions - the first of which came in the FA Cup third round back in 1912. The Reds have beaten the Royals 12 times, while there have been seven draws and just one win for Reading. Incidentally, 14 of the previous meetings have been in the FA Cup, with the other six coming in the Premier League. As mentioned earlier, the last encounter came two years ago at Old Trafford when Reading were under the management of former United defender Jaap Stam and Rooney became our joint all-time leading scorer, matching Sir Bobby Charlton's record with his 249th goal for the club.

DID YOU KNOW?
This will be the seventh time United have been paired with Reading in the FA Cup third round. The Reds also met the Royals at this stage of the tournament in 1912, 1927, 1936, 1937, 1955 and 2017, and knocked them out of the cup in different rounds en route to reaching the final in 1996 and 2007; in the latter campaign, United won 3-2, with Solskjaer netting the third and decisive goal.

ONE TO WATCH
Yakou Meite has been in impressive form so far this season. The attacker has scored six goals for the Royals in 2018/19, including strikes in victories against Millwall and Bristol City earlier in the season. Meite can operate as a winger or as a central striker and is a tireless worker.

SOME FAMILIAR FACES
The Old Trafford faithful will give former defender John O’Shea a warm welcome back this weekend. The Irishman made 393 appearances for the Reds and won five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup and two League Cups during his 12-year stint with the club. The afore-mentioned Blackett and McShane also came through United's youth system.

WHO IS THE REFEREE?
Stuart Attwell will take charge of proceedings on Saturday. The 36-year-old oversaw our only other domestic cup match of the season - the defeat on penalties to Derby County in the Carabao Cup in September. Darren Cann and Andy Garratt will be assistant referees, while David Coote will fulfill the role of fourth official. For the second year in a row, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be in use in the FA Cup, and Old Trafford is one of nine grounds where the system will be in operation this weekend. Jon Moss, who refereed our Boxing Day win over Huddersfield Town, will assume the role and he will be assisted by Stephen Child.

WHAT ARE THE OTHER THIRD-ROUND TIES?
The FA Cup third round is one of the busiest weekends in the football calendar with 32 ties across the entire weekend. This year, the games will be spread across four days and will feature teams from the Premier League all the way down to the National League South.

TEAM NEWS FOR READING TIE

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez will both start in Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup third-round tie against Reading.

Both forwards had an impact off the bench in Wednesday’s 2-0 win at Newcastle, with Lukaku netting with his first touch to open the scoring, before Alexis set up Marcus Rashford’s goal.

Eric Bailly will sit out a second game through suspension and Solskjaer has also said that fellow defenders Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo are again sidelined.

The caretaker manager also told reporters in his pre-match press conference that Paul Pogba is a doubt after sustaining a knock, presumably after a rash challenge by Jonjo Shelvey, but he is hopeful Marouane Fellaini will come through Friday's session at the Aon Training Complex.

“Rojo [and] Smalling - they're out,” Ole said. “I'm not sure if Paul [Pogba] is going to be ready for this one. He got a knock against Newcastle and hopefully Fellaini will get through the training session today and then we're more or less a full squad. There'll be a few changes and they'll get a chance. Some of them are itching now to play, of course. Get Lukaku a start, get Sanchez a start. That's important for them, because they need more game time.”

‘THERE WILL BE A FEW CHANGES’

The 12:30 GMT kick-off at Old Trafford tomorrow will be the Reds’ fifth match in the space of a fortnight, after four wins in as many Premier League matches over the festive period under the caretaker manager.

With that in mind, Solskjaer told MUTV that he will implement “a few changes” to his starting XI and make full use of the strong squad at his disposal.

“[There are] no injuries to be concerned about,” he told Mark Sullivan. “Obviously it was Wednesday night [against Newcastle] and it’s Saturday morning [against Reading] so there will be a few changes. Many of them have played four games on the bounce and are feeling the Christmas period so there might be a couple of changes, or maybe a few more, but we’re ready for Reading.

“Definitely, players will get the chance. When they’re here, they’re good enough to play for Man United and you trust them, so I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

HOW ARE READING SHAPING UP?

The Royals, who sit second from bottom in the Championship, could welcome back defenders Chris Gunter and Liam Moore for Saturday’s tie. Moore returned from injury in their last outing against Swansea City but was only fit enough for a place on the bench, while Gunter has not played since a 1-1 draw against Rotherham on 15 December.

However, the visitors will be without Leandro Bacuna and former United defender Tyler Blackett – both of whom are suspended following red cards against Millwall.

Long-term absentees Paul McShane, Saeid Ezatolahi and Jordan Obita will also miss the game through injury, while Dutch midfielder Pelle Clement left the club on Wednesday to join PEC Zwolle in his homeland. Ex-Red John O'Shea is expected to be involved.

Q&A: SOLSKJAER CALLS FOR COURAGE AGAINST READING

Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has spoken exclusively to us ahead of today's Emirates FA Cup third-round tie against Reading at Old Trafford.

In our latest sit-down interview, the Norwegian reflects on Wednesday's 2-0 win at Newcastle and discusses coming up against the Royals, being reunited with his former team-mate John O'Shea and his memories of the FA Cup...

On reflection, was the win at Newcastle the best of the four victories so far?
“It depends on how you look at it but the first three maybe was the honeymoon if you like and it was three games you expect to win – you’re at home for two of them. Then you go up there, it’s a difficult place to go. I thought in the second half we played some fantastic stuff. All in all, it was a first clean sheet and to come away from there with three points [was] brilliant but I must say I’ve enjoyed the home games more.”

Did you learn more about your players in that tough game at St James’ Park?
“Yes, definitely. That was one of the things I was thinking about before the game – this might be a tough one or it will be a tough one and you’ll get to learn how they react if we make the first mistake or they score the first goal. I felt we were a bit safer in the way we played, maybe because we were away from home. But in the second half I thought you could see the pace, the power, the counter-attacking, the forward thinking again and we were solid at the back.”

Looking ahead to the tie against Reading, what dangers are there in playing a team from the Championship?
“Well, I was in the Championship with Cardiff and the tempo, the enthusiasm and energy of those players and teams is incredible. So, of course, there’s complacency – you can’t go into a game complacent. With confidence? Yes. With courage? Yes. But never anything but 100 per cent work ethic and I think that’s been one of the big pluses. We’ve started to outrun teams again, working harder than teams but with the quality we’ve got we’ll get results.”

Reading might be struggling in the Championship but does their league form matter when coming into a big game like this for them?
“I think when you go to Old Trafford, league form doesn’t matter at all. It’s something they will look forward to and they have got nothing to lose. The FA Cup is fantastic and the players we put on the pitch will have nothing to lose too. They’ll go out there and they’ve got their careers ahead of them. Hopefully we can produce a couple of scary moments for Mr John O’Shea!”

Hopefully! Of course, John is someone you know very well and I’m sure you still keep in touch with him?
“Yes, it’s fantastic that he’s still playing – I think he’s 37 or 38 now. He’s professional, he loves football and of course hopefully he won’t love this game! [laughs] I hope he’ll enjoy the build-up to the game but not during [the game].”

The FA Cup is very special to everyone at Manchester United – how special is it for you in particular?
“Very special because, ever since I was back home when I was a young kid, that was the last game of the season, it was always on television and you looked forward to the FA Cup final. I still remember Norman’s curled goal towards the far end against Everton. I’ve played in three finals – in 1999, 2004 and 2007 – and won two of them. The one at Wembley in ’99 [when we beat Newcastle 2-0] was one of the highlights. In that 10-day period [when we won the Treble], I knew I wasn’t going to start against Bayern Munich [in the Champions League final] anyway but the manager trusted me to play in that ’99 final and it was one of the biggest moments [in my playing career].”

What’s your fondest memory in the FA Cup – is it that one in ’99?
“Yes, definitely. Obviously Roy [Keane] got injured and I got moved over to the right-hand side but the manager trusted us. He put me in, he put David May in, he put loads of squad players in for the FA Cup final. It showed everything that he was about. Even though it’s maybe the second biggest game of the season, he trusted some of us to do the business.”
