ED WOODWARD ELECTED TO ECA BOARD

Manchester United executive vice chairman Ed Woodward has been elected to the new Executive Board of the European Club Association (ECA).

The ECA, an independent body which represents and promotes the interests of 220 European football clubs, made the announcement on Tuesday at its general assembly in Geneva, Switzerland.

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has been re-appointed as ECA chairman, while Woodward joins former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, now a director at Ajax, among the 11 men elected as members of the board.

Rummenigge said: "ECA's achievements since its inception in 2008 are remarkable and make all of us very proud. We are a well-respected association and are taken seriously at all levels.

"With the support of all member clubs, the newly elected Executive Board will face the upcoming challenges with a lot of commitment to ensure that the clubs’ voice continues to be heard.”

United.

Tidak sedikit penggemar Man. United yang menghujat petinggi klubnya tersebut di jejaring sosial Twitter.

Mark Ogden: Ed Woodward’s three years in charge have left Manchester United deep in the Twilight Zone

FOOTBALL MATTERS: The three-year anniversary of the executive vice-chairman's appointment will be marked by a trip to Midtjylland

Mark Ogden Chief Football Correspondent

gambarnya dari googling, gambar aslinya kegedean

There is a photograph on Ed Woodward’s desk at Manchester United of the scoreboard in Olympiakos’s Karaiskakis Stadium, moments after David Moyes’ team had fallen two goals behind in a Champions League last 16 first-leg tie in February 2014.

Woodward was also caught on camera as he took the picture on his mobile phone, looking in the opposite direction as Sir Bobby Charlton grimaced and fellow director Michael Edelson held his head in his hands.

It was an awkward image, but United’s executive vice-chairman confessed to grabbing the picture in order to have a permanent reminder of the lowest point of his tenure, something to smile about once the good times began to roll and the faltering steps in the aftermath of Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement were nothing but a distant memory.

Who knows whether the photograph remains facing upwards on Woodward’s desk, but as United prepare for the resumption of the Champions League this week with only a Europa League tie against FC Midtjylland to look forward to, it is safe to suggest that the man charged with running the club by the Glazer family is yet to find reason to chuckle at any reminder of that frozen moment in Piraeus.

This coming Saturday marks three years since the confirmation of Woodward’s promotion to the top job at Old Trafford, with the former JP Morgan investment banker-turned-commercial guru handed the task of replacing the retiring chief executive, David Gill, by the Glazers.

But neither Woodward nor the Glazers would have anticipated the third anniversary being marked by a trip to a sleepy corner of Denmark in a competition best described as the Champions League’s ugly sister.

Central Jutland, on a Thursday night, at the same time as United’s expensively assembled squad languish in fifth position in the Premier League, is as much a nightmare scenario as was possible to imagine when Gill handed in his notice three years ago, but the alarming reality for Woodward and United is that life in the Twilight Zone is beginning to become the norm for England’s biggest club.

The only significant achievement of Woodward’s reign to date would seem to be that of making Manchester City a more attractive destination than United for the world’s most sought after coach, Pep Guardiola.

When Gill and Ferguson vacated the stage in May 2013, United stood tall as Premier League champions, with Old Trafford still a place where opponents feared to tread.

But the last three years have been nothing short of disastrous and Woodward’s inability to steer the club back on course now merits the same scrutiny as applied to the ill-fated Moyes and Louis van Gaal, whose failure to replicate the successes of his earlier career with Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich has left the team drifting aimlessly in the doldrums, playing a brand of football enjoyed only by insomniacs.

Woodward has had to learn on the job, discovering that the world of transfers and recruitment is wholly different to selling shirt space to brands and companies desperate for a sprinkling of United’s stardust.

If he was pushing at an open door when dealing with clients at United’s commercial headquarters in Mayfair, Woodward has fumbled for his keys while trying to unlock those with superstar footballers or managers behind them.

On Woodward’s watch, United have tried and failed to land Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Neymar, yet somehow managed to sign Marouane Fellaini for a fee greater than his Everton escape clause and pay over the odds for the likes of Juan Mata and Angel Di Maria – despite both players being unwanted by Chelsea and Real Madrid respectively.

Yes, the commercial deals have continued to stack up, but how long will the United gravy train continue to chug away with a team that now regards fourth place as the Promised Land and one which has not even threatened a trophy, never mind won one, since Ferguson walked away three years ago?

Chevrolet and Adidas pay a combined £128m a year to have their logos splashed across the United shirt, yet when the deals were signed they surely imagined those red jerseys being worn in the Nou Camp and Allianz Arena rather than the intimate surroundings of the 11,800-capacity MCH Arena this Thursday.

In many respects, Woodward has been the perfect boss for Moyes and Van Gaal, signing cheques to the tune of more than £300m in order to recruit the players demanded by his managers. But perhaps this generosity has been his greatest weakness.

Woodward does not appear to be a man who readily says “no”, with Van Gaal getting everything he has asked for, from new pitches and analysis equipment at the club’s training ground to a succession of signings of dubious quality.

Van Gaal has also benefited from his superior’s patience, with the Dutchman holding on to his job following a terrible December thanks solely to Woodward’s determination to stand by his man.

Moyes was also given the benefit of the doubt by Woodward, with the Scot finally sacked in April 2014 when there had been strong calls from within the club to act two months earlier.

Woodward has so far failed to display the hard-headed ruthlessness required at the highest level of the game, however, and this inertia is contributing to United’s decline.

Decisions are delayed or fudged and there is little sense of the certainty and vision shown across town at City, who have dealt neatly and swiftly with Guardiola’s recruitment and left United in their wake.

Similarly, while Woodward talks of getting “elbows deep” into the job of restructuring United’s academy and replacing Brian McClair, who left his post of academy director last May, City announced Simon Davies as Patrick Vieira’s successor as their academy supremo within days of the Frenchman’s move to New York City FC in December.

But perhaps the trip to Midtjylland will help focus minds at Old Trafford. When City played the Danes in the Uefa Cup back in August 2008, the club’s then chief executive, Garry Cook, was busy briefing senior colleagues that “something big” was in the offing and that an attempt to hijack United’s bid for Tottenham’s Dimitar Berbatov was being plotted.

Four days later, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan swooped to buy the club before bidding for Berbatov and ending up with Robinho.

Midtjylland was the moment it all started to move for City and Woodward needs to find a way for the same trip to trigger something for United.

Ed Woodward's right-hand man praises under-fire Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal

Managing director Richard Arnold says the Man Utd board have been impressed with the young players this season.

Ed Woodward’s right-hand man has praised under-pressure Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal for his investment in youth at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman has handed first-team debuts to eight academy players this season, including 18-year-old striker Marcus Rashford, who has scored five goals in eight games since breaking into the team.

There is continued speculation Van Gaal could leave this summer after a disappointing campaign that has seen United exit the Champions League at the group stages and struggle to finish in the Premier League’s top four.

But Richard Arnold, United’s group managing director, has hailed the 64-year-old for his endorsement of the club’s academy.

Van Gaal’s record of youth development is in stark contrast to that of Jose Mourinho, one of the names mentions as a possible replacement for the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager.

Arnold told CNBC: “I’m really excited about the young players.

“I think the thing that’s come through this year is you seen the success of our academy system and the way it has worked and you see the young players coming through.

“There’s a whole army of people in tears, seeing a player score the first time and that’s an important part of what are and we’re all set for the future.”

The 1-0 win over Manchester City has left United a point off the Champions League places with eight games to go.

Arnold, who work’s closely with executive vice-chairman Woodward, insists the board are still confident Van Gaal can deliver Champions League football for next season.

But while he revealed his delight at watching United win at the Etihad Stadium last week – a result that reignited the race for fourth place - he admitted the Europa League exit to Liverpool had been ‘heart-wrenching’.

He added: “We’re committed to making sure we’re playing the highest levels. No one likes losing, it’s not something that the club sets out to do.

“I think that is something we have seen in the last two or two and a bit years, it has been tougher than some of the preceding years but what we have seen is an amazing group of fans.

“We are 140 years old and we had amazing times in my 10 years at the club. I have been to three Champions League finals. We won a lot of Premier League titles.

“We have had amazing days and we have not so amazing days. Sunday was amazing, the Thursday before was pretty heart-wrenching and one of the things that is fantastic about both the sport and then our fans is uncertainty is what makes it fantastic.”

WOODWARD COMMENTS ON ARENA TRAGEDY

United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was interviewed by MUTV on Tuesday evening and made the following comments regarding the tragic events in Manchester on Monday night...

What is your reaction to the tragic events that happened in our city?
"Words don't really do justice for how we all feel. We're numb. The events were sickening and all our thoughts at the moment are with the victims and the families affected by it. It was very sombre flying over with the directors this morning and it was all we were talking about, to be honest. We've met with UEFA and sat with them and gone through different things we can do around the game, and they accepted we can wear black armbands and have a minute's silence for the victims."

What impact has it had on Manchester United's preparations?
"We've got a job to do tomorrow, no question about that, and that hasn't been changed but I think what happened last night really put things into perspective. Success on the pitch really is nothing compared to the pain and suffering going on back home, that is really where our thoughts are at this point in time."

Manchester United chief Ed Woodward shows his class with touching gesture

Man Utd news includes the latest on the club's executive vice-chairman in the aftermath of the Manchester bombing.

Ed Woodward offered a journalist the chance to fly home with Manchester United when he learnt his 'traumatised' daughter had been caught up in the Manchester Arena terror attack.

22 adults and children were killed and 116 people were injured following a suicide bombing in the aftermath of an Ariana Grande concert last week.

Among those affected was the Daily Star's chief sports writer, Jeremy Cross, whose terrified daughter was in attendance ahead of her father flying out for the Europa League final in Stockholm.

Following United's 2-0 win over Ajax, Cross has since revealed that Woodward reached out to him - with a touching gesture.

"My daughter, who is 11, was caught up in the horrific events at the Manchester Arena, where a terrorist bomb killed 22 people including children," he wrote in the Daily Star.

"She was left traumatised, unable to understand how evil the world can seem sometimes. But when Woodward became aware of the situation, he was quick to get in touch with the offer of help in the shape of counselling.

"He even invited me to travel back with the club following the Europa League final in Stockholm, so I could get home quicker to be with her.

"It was a touching gesture and one I’m not too sure some other clubs would have made. In adversity Woodward, a father of two himself, stepped up to prove what a genuine bloke he is."

UNITED CHIEF APPOINTED TO EUROPEAN BOARD

Manchester United's executive-vice chairman Ed Woodward has been appointed onto UEFA's Professional Football Strategy Council, following changes to the committee and leadership of the European Club Association.

The position sees Mr Woodward placed as one of four senior executives in the role, who will advise and assist in the structure of European football's governing body, while he continues with his daily duties and position at Manchester United.

The United chief is the only executive in English football to hold the role and is joined by representatives from Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Celtic to form the newly appointed advisory board.

Speaking of his new position, Ed Woodward commented: "I am delighted to have been appointed to represent the ECA on UEFA's Professional Football Strategy Council. The PFSC plays a vital role in shaping football across the continent and ensuring that it develops in a sustainable way, to the benefit of the game as a whole."

Further changes to the European Club Association have seen Juventus' Andrea Agnelli become the second ECA chairman, following Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who served in the position since the body was founded in 2008.

In recognition of his significant contribution and commitment to the development of European club football over the past nine years, Rummenigge was awarded the first-ever ECA honorary chairmanship.

Also taking up a new position is former United keeper and now Ajax's chief executive officer, Edwin van der Sar, who has been appointed as second vice-chairman to the ECA executive Board.

Default Re: Ed Woodward

Mourinho dan Woodward Tak Akur, Setan Merah Memanas
Mohammad Resha Pratama - detikSport

'Ed out!': Manchester United fans pay to fly banner calling for Woodward's head ahead of Premier League clash against Burnley at Turf Moor

* Manchester United fans will fly a banner calling for Ed Woodward to be axed
* The banner will fly over Turf Moor before United play at Burnley next weekend
* It's believed that the message will be 'Ed Out – LUHG' with a dig at the Glazers
* Woodward has been at odds with Jose Mourinho over United's transfer policy
* It is the first time United fans have employed this tactic since David Moyes' reign

Manchester United chief Ed Woodward came under more pressure on Wednesday night after it emerged that fans have paid for a banner to be flown over Turf Moor calling for his head.

It's understood that the message will be 'Ed Out – LUHG' (Love United, Hate Glazers) in a protest at Woodward and the club's American owners who appointed him.

The banner is set to appear over Turf Moor before United play at Burnley on September 2.

Manchester United fans have paid for a plane to fly a banner calling for Ed Woodward's head. Woodward has been at odds with Jose Mourinho over United's transfer policy this summer

It is the first time that unhappy United fans have employed this tactic since a 'Wrong One – Moyes Out' message was flown over Old Trafford in attempt to force out David Moyes in March 2014. The Scot was sacked one month and four games later.

Woodward has been at odds with manager Jose Mourinho over United's transfer policy this summer despite spending £400million on new players since appointing the Portuguese coach two years ago.

He came under fire from former Old Trafford favourite Gary Neville who claimed that Woodward has undermined his manager after giving him a new contract in January.

'It's painful to think how it's played out these last five or six years,' said Neville. 'If Ed Woodward was going to doubt Jose Mourinho, then the time to be doubting him was last January.

'The minute he gave Jose Mourinho a contract extension – which some would say was unnecessary part way through a season – he had to then buy him the centre-backs.

'He had to get him (Harry) Maguire, he had to get him (Toby) Alderweireld, because they wouldn't have made those mistakes yesterday (at Brighton).

'My view is that Alderweireld and Maguire would have been good options. If it cost £120m to bring them in, then that's what you have to do when you are backing Jose Mourinho.

The banner is set to appear over Turf Moor before United play at Burnley on September 2

'I look at it from a sort of board perspective and it's been messy these last couple of weeks.

'Jose announced a week last Friday that he might as well be called a head coach. What he was saying to us was basically. 'I've just been given the players I'm told to work with now'.

'Don't get me wrong, the club have supported Jose Mourinho and given him a lot of money, but you can't go half rolls.

'Don't three-quarters build a house. You've got to finish it and they had to finish it if they were going to give that contract extension in January.'

United are understood to be looking at appointing a director of football to oversee the club's recruitment policy in future.

After struggling in the period since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement five years ago under David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and now Mourinho, Neville believes it is time Woodward let a more experienced football man do the job while he focuses on business side of the club.

'Ed Woodward has done an incredible job at the club in terms of the commercial operation,' said Neville. 'But there is no doubt he should put a footballing structure underneath him that can go and now deliver for him.

'Football has changed. There are head of recruitments and sporting directors. There is a series of people in the best operating football clubs in the world – Bayern Munich and I'll put Manchester City in that unfortunately.

'They need serious football people to be able to guide the club. What Manchester United have been doing for the last five or six years is basically bouncing from one strategy to another.

'The minute you sack David Moyes halfway through the season, Louis van Gaal after an FA Cup win, appointing Jose Mourinho, the whole traditions of Manchester United have gone.'
