Clubs hit 700 mark
PremierLeague.com

This weekend's round of fixtures will see seven clubs play their 700th Premier League match.

Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have featured in all 19 Premier League campaigns since its inception in the 1992/93 season.

Everton and Manchester United will be the first clubs to hit the 700 mark when they meet in Saturday's early kick-off at Goodison Park.

Good Cause

The first three seasons of Premier League football were played in a 22-team, 42-match format, with the clubs playing 126 fixtures over this period. The following 15 seasons saw the seven clubs play a combined 570 matches, with the league reduced to 20 clubs. Three matches into the new season, and the total for these seven Premier League ever-presents stands at 699.

Much has changed since the first Premier League season. Stadium attendance has risen from an average 21,000 in 1992/93 to 34,215 so far this season. Over 92 per cent of stadiums are being filled, compared to just under 70 per cent in the first season.

The country's UEFA co-efficient has risen from 9th to 1st, while the Premier League can now boast 90 international broadcast contracts, compared to one in the first season.

Solidarity and good cause payments have risen from £5m to £172m, while initiatives such as Places for Players, Premier Skills and Kickz, all under the Creating Chances umbrella, use football as a vehicle towards helping communities.

Countries Represented

On the pitch, Man Utd have won 11 Premier League titles, Arsenal and Chelsea three each, and Blackburn Rovers one, in the 1994/95 season.

United have earned the most wins (451), scored the most goals (1382), kept the most clean sheets (313) and accrued 1501 points in the process.

Since United won the first ever Premier League title, the number of countries represented by players in the top flight has increased from 33 to 65.

The diverse nature of the Premier League was also demonstrated in a recent survey which established that Women and BME's (Black or Minority Ethnic) are the population groups that are increasingly coming to matches.

Default EPL Records - Barclays Premier League in numbers

Barclays Premier League in numbers
PremierLeague.co.uk. - 13 Sep 2010

We look back at the fourth weekend of the new Barclays Premier League season with some key facts and figures.

2 - Newcastle United's summer signing James Perch has become only the second player to be booked in each of his first four Premier League appearances. The first was Edgar Davids with Tottenham Hotspur.

3 - Yellow cards were shown by Howard Webb in the 1-1 draw between West Bromwich Albion and Tottenham Hotspur. Webb was refereeing his first Premier League match since the World Cup final when he dished out 14 yellow cards and one red.

5 - Lee Cattermole's red card at Wigan Athletic was the fifth dismissal of his career and his second of the season.

7 - Consecutive Premier League draws between Birmingham City and Liverpool. Sunday's 0-0 at St Andrew's equalled the Premier League record for successive stalemates set by West Ham and Aston Villa.

10 - The 1-1 draw between West Bromwich Albion and Tottenham Hotspur was only the 10th time the sides had finished all-square in 58 league matches.

12 - Goals conceded this season by West Ham United who have let in three in each of their four Barclays Premier League fixtures.

17 - Laurent Koscienly became the 17th French player to score for Arsenal in the Premier League when he netted the Gunners' opener against Bolton Wanderers.

27 - Newcastle United's 2-0 home defeat by Blackpool was their first reverse in 27 league and cup matches at St James' Park since they went down 1-0 to Fulham in May 2009.

534 - Johan Elmander's equaliser just before half-time was the first Premier League goal Arsenal had conceded at the Emirates in eight hours and 54 minutes. Burnley's David Nugent scored the last goal by a visiting side 534 minutes previously.

671 - Scott Parker's clever lobbed volley on 85 minutes was the first Premier League goal conceded by Chelsea in 671 minutes since Gareth Bale scored in Tottenham Hotspur's 2-1 win on 17th April.

700 - Everton and Manchester United became the first teams to rack up 700 Premier League matches. They were followed over the weekend by Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur with Aston Villa reaching the milestone at Stoke on Monday night.

1001 - Premier League goals scored by Arsenal under Arsene Wenger. Alex Song brought up the 1000 landmark with a clever chip for the Gunners' third strike in a 4-1 win over Bolton Wanderers.

Default Re: Barclays Premier League in numbers

Soccernet - September 22, 2010

Which club has beaten Manchester United the most?

That distinction falls to Arsenal, who have won 77 of their 209 games against United, putting them way clear of Everton (62 victories) and Liverpool (60). That breaks down as ten Premier League victories, 47 in the old Division 1, nine in Division 2, four in the Charity Shield, five in the FA Cup and two in the League Cup. However, lest Arsenal appear United's bogey team, it is worth mentioning that the men from Manchester have won more (86) than they have lost.

Which team has scored the most number of goals and which player has scored the most hat-tricks in the Premier League?

The leading scorers are Manchester United, who have managed 1,388 goals, including Dimitar Berbatov's treble against Liverpool on Sunday.

The man with the most hat-tricks in the Premier League is, perhaps not surprisingly, the man with the most goals. Alan Shearer's 260 Premier League goals included 11 hat-tricks, including a five-goal haul against Sheffield Wednesday in 1999. After him, Robbie Fowler has nine trebles and Thierry Henry and Michael Owen eight apiece.

Has there ever been a match in the Premier League when two players scored a hat-trick for their respective team in the same game?

There is one instance of players on different sides scoring a hat-trick. It came in December 2007 at the JJB Stadium (as it was then called). Marcus Bent struck three times for Wigan and Roque Santa Cruz managed a 16-minute hat-trick for Blackburn in a 5-3 win for the home side. It was also Steve Bruce's first win in his second spell as Wigan manager.

In addition, there is one match where two players from the same side have both scored a hat-trick: Arsenal's 6-1 win over Southampton in May 2003 when the home side's goals were shared equally between Jermaine Pennant and Robert Pires.

Being a Red Devil since the Bryan Robson days, I was wondering whether the ten own goals contributed by opponents in the 2009-10 season is the highest number for a team in a season. And in tribute to Jamie Carragher (who scored two own goals against Manchester United in a game), who holds the record as the top own goalscorer?

Jamie Carragher rues one of his six own goals - this one came against Hull City

Manchester United eventually benefited from 12 own goals last season, which was double the previous record. Three of them came courtesy of Portsmouth players in the same match, February's 5-0 win at Old Trafford.

As you mentioned, Jamie Carragher managed two own goals in United's 3-2 win at Anfield in September 1999. In total, he has six Premier League own goals, giving him a share of a record with Aston Villa's Richard Dunne and the former Chelsea and Leicester defender Frank Sinclair. The latter's achievements included two 90th-minute own goals in the first week of the 1999-2000 season, costing Leicester three points. Dunne, incidentally, also holds a share of another unwanted record: his eight red cards is the most in Premier League history, though equalled by Patrick Vieira and Duncan Ferguson.

To return to the subject of own goals, Middlesbrough defender Bobby Stuart apparently managed to beat his own goalkeeper five times in the 1934-5 season. As he only scored twice at the right end in his Boro career, he was only prolific in the wrong goal.

Barclays Premier League in numbers

We look back at the seventh weekend of the Barclays Premier League season with some key facts and figures.

2 - Wolverhampton Wanderers managed just two attempts on goal - the lowest by any team in a single Barclays Premier League match this season - as they went down 2-0 at Wigan Athletic. It saw them equal their club record of four successive Premier League defeats, set between March and April 2004.

4 - Blackburn Rovers have now failed to score in their last four matches against Stoke City after going down 1-0 at the Britannia Stadium.

9 - Tottenham Hotspur's 2-1 win over Aston Villa means Harry Redknapp is unbeaten in nine league matches against the Midlands side since his Portsmouth team lost 1-0 at Villa Park in March 2006.

11 - Arsenal have not kept a clean sheet in their last 11 Premier League away matches, since a goalless draw at Aston Villa on 27th January.

13 - Didier Drogba has now scored 13 goals in his last 13 matches against Arsenal after netting the opener in the Blues' 2-0 win which put them four points clear at the top of the table.

Worst Start

14 -
Fulham's 1-1 scoreline at West Ham United means Mark Hughes has drawn 14 of his last 18 Premier League games as a manager.

16 - In 16 attempts since moving into management, Steve Bruce is yet to get one over his former mentor Sir Alex Ferguson after his Sunderland side drew 0-0 with Manchester United.

19 - Birmingham failed in their bid to set a new club record of 19 top-flight home matches unbeaten as they went down 2-0 to Everton at St Andrew's.

39 - It is 39 matches since West Bromwich Albion were last involved in a goalless draw in the league. The last four matches between West Brom and Bolton Wanderers have ended in draws after they finished 1-1 on Saturday.

57 - Liverpool have made their worst start to a season in 57 years. They ended the 1953/54 season in bottom place and were relegated from the top flight.

100 - Tim Cahill notched his 100th goal in league football as Everton won 2-0 at Birmingham - 13 of his last 15 goals have been headers.
