Default Re: Marcus Rashford

After 127 games in a struggling team, Marcus Rashford has more goals than Cristiano Ronaldo scored at Manchester United – and converts TWICE as many chances as the Portuguese superstar managed

* Marcus Rashford played his 127th Premier League game against Manchester City
* Huge expectation has been heaped on his shoulders since his debut in 2016
* However, Rashford is outperforming Cristiano Ronaldo in a struggling team
* Rashford has three more goals and a better shot conversion rate than Ronaldo
* Ronaldo pips Rashford on assists but was surrounded by superstar team-mates

It feels quite astounding that Marcus Rashford's man of the match performance over Manchester City on Saturday was his 127th Premier League outing for his boyhood club.

After all, it only seems a short while since the Wythenshawe-born striker burst onto the scene as a sprightly 18-year-old, notching two braces in the space of a few days against Midtjylland and Arsenal.

That was in February 2016, and since then plenty of expectation has been heaped on the young man's shoulders to be the talisman that can lead United to glory in an era that has been largely disappointing post-Sir Alex Ferguson.

Marcus Rashford's man of the match display on Saturday was his 127th Premier League game. The 22-year-old extended his goals tally to 13 goals in all competitions this season

Former United boss Louis van Gaal, who handed Rashford his debut over three years ago, hailed the youngster as one of the most special talents he has ever brought through.

'I believe in young players, and at all my clubs I have given them a chance, even when I started out at AZ Alkmaar,' he said in April 2016.

'Then I went to Ajax and Kluivert, 18 years old, gave the same sort of performances as we are seeing from Rashford. I can give a lot of other examples of the same thing. Müller at Bayern, Xavi and Iniesta at Barcelona. Age is not the issue, quality is more important.'

It doesn't feel all that long ago since Rashford burst onto the scene at Manchester United. Former United boss Louis van Gaal hailed Rashford as one of the most special talents he's worked with

It's incredibly easy to fall into the trap of prematurely comparing talented youngsters to the superstar icons football has been blessed with in years gone by. Comparisons are made all the easier when both players have played for the same club, and in Cristiano Ronaldo, lofty expectations have been cast onto the 22-year-old to be the superstar United have long yearned for.

But perhaps it isn't all too foolish to dig deeper into a Rashford-Ronaldo comparison. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer does not consider it a stretch to earmark the England international as the heir apparent to the Portuguese supremo's throne.

'It's very easy to compare the two of them, yes,' he said after United's 2-1 win over arch rivals City. 'Both with skills, body shape, attitude, attributes – everything. The boy has every chance in the world to become a top, top player. Let's hope he continues like this.'

And, quite surprisingly, Marcus Rashford's statistics after 127 Premier League games compared to those of United's former number 7 make for very interesting reading.

Despite arriving from Portugal as an exciting, albeit unknown, quantity in 2003, Sir Alex Ferguson was not hesitant in throwing a young Cristiano Ronaldo straight into the heart of his famed side. 94 of Ronaldo's 127 league appearances were starts.

Meanwhile, Rashford has made eight fewer with 86 - perhaps owing to the continuous change of manager at Old Trafford meaning he was favoured by some more than others.

Rashford's (left) statistics after 127 Premier League games compared to Cristiano Ronaldo (right) make for interesting reading. The Portuguese star made more starts and played more minutes owing to consistency during Sir Alex Ferguson's reign

That's also reflected in minutes played, with Ronaldo playing a combined 8,924 minutes to Rashford's 8,110. The 814 minute difference equates to roughly nine games.

Most interestingly, in those 127 Premier League games Rashford has found the net on three more occasions than his Portuguese counterpart, scoring 37 goals to Ronaldo's 34. Add that to minutes played, and Ronaldo scored a goal every 262 minutes to Rashford's goal every 219.

Ronaldo also had almost double the amount of shots on goal to Rashford, too, striking 471 attempts to Rashford's 256. That means that the Englishman's short conversion rate is double that of Ronaldo, at 14.5 to 7.2.

It should be noted, though, that Rashford has been played through the middle as the leading forward for United as well as out wide on the left, while Ronaldo played solely on the wing under Ferguson.

With the likes of Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Carlos Tevez surrounding him, it is hardly surprising that Ronaldo trumps Rashford with assists. He provided 22 for his team-mates while the 22-year-old laid on 18 assists for Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and co.

And the key factor to consider when comparing these statistics is the state of play at Manchester United during Rashford and Ronaldo's respective tenures at the club.

Constant managerial change, disarray at the top of the hierarchy at Old Trafford as well as underperforming team-mates are all factors that would understandably stump the progress of any youngster coming through the ranks, and yet Marcus Rashford is defying the odds with consistent top level performances.

United's dominance in the noughties provided a settled platform for Ronaldo to perform

Constant managerial change, disarray behind the scenes and poor team-mates should have stumped Rashford's growth, but he continues to perform

There is still an overwhelming feeling of any Ronaldo-Rashford comparison being slightly premature, given the Portuguese's all-conquering supremacy, alongisde Lionel Messi, for the best part of a decade. It should also be remembered that, following his world-record move to Real Madrid, Ronaldo's statistics skyrocketed to levels football has never seen before.

But after 127 Premier League games Marcus Rashford seems well on his way to making history of his own.

RASHFORD BEAMING AFTER BURNLEY RESULT

Marcus Rashford was pleased to help Manchester United bring 2019 to a close with back-to-back wins, as the Reds beat Burnley 2-0 at Turf Moor on Saturday night.

Rashford set the seal on another victory for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, caressing the ball over the line in stoppage time to ensure the points were secured. The England international's goal, his 16th of the campaign in all competitions, means that United end the calendar year within striking distance of the Premier League's top four places.

Speaking to MUTV after the match, Marcus admitted that, while his strike wasn't the most clinical of finishes, he was glad to add to what is already his best tally for a single season.

“I still don’t know how that went in,” he joked, “but we will take it. For me it’s just about being in the right positions. I know sometimes I’m going to miss, sometimes I’ll score, but as long as I’m consistently in the right positions I will get goals.”

His associate in attack, Anthony Martial, is also back among the goals. The Frenchman's opener just before the interval sent him into double figures for the term, and added to his brace against Newcastle United two days before.

“He’s brilliant when he’s one-against-one with the keeper,” Marcus said about Martial. “It’s down to us to give him more of those opportunities.”

He added: “As a number nine you thrive off those opportunities and we know that when he is in front of goal, when he’s calm and confident like he is right now, it’s only going one way.

“So, we just need to keep feeding him, let him keep scoring goals, keep the confidence high and we should be all right going forward.”

Turf Moor has often been labelled as a difficult venue for visiting teams. Although our record away at the Clarets has been pretty stout in recent times, a 48-hour turnaround after our Boxing Day match meant that it was a tough test physically and mentally for Solskjaer's side in Lancashire.

“It’s difficult,” admitted Rashford. “It’s probably one of the toughest places to go away from home in the league, so credit to the lads and the staff.

“It’s been difficult with two games in three days. Physically it’s tough, mentally we can always be in the right mindset for the game, but sometimes physically the body can let you down and today everyone was running until the 95th minute, so to get the three points after doing all that work is a nice feeling.”

It has been a profitable December for the Reds in the league, with successive victories over Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City preceding our two wins during the festive period.

As for Rashford, the 22-year old has been involved in 16 Premier League goals this term, the third most out of anyone in the competition, and hopes to help push the Reds further up the table going into the New Year.

“We’ve struggled to get back-to-back wins in the league, but it’s about keeping that momentum, keeping going forward and getting used to winning,” he said. “We’re not going to win every game prettily, it’s impossible in this league, so we’re going to have to grind some results out and today was one of those games.

“We take the three points and we move on and keep trying to improve.”

If he was in City's team he would get 40 goals a season': Micah Richards believes Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford would flourish at rivals after Carabao Cup mauling

* Marcus Rashford scored his 17th goal of the season against Manchester City
* But the Blues ran out comfortable 3-1 winners in Carabao Cup semi-final first leg
* Richards believes Rashford would flourish with the help of City's supply line

Micah Richards believes Manchester United's lack of midfield creativity is hindering striker Marcus Rashford.

The Red Devils striker scored his 17th goal of the season in the 3-1 home defeat by Manchester City on Tuesday night.

But former Blues defender Richards says Rashford would be prolific playing with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez.

He told Sky Sports: ‘I feel a bit sorry for Rashford because if he was in City’s team he would get 40 goals a season. Obviously on the counter with (Anthony) Martial, (Daniel) James, (Jesse) Lingard they look good.

‘Sometimes the counter-attack is not on. Look at their (City’s) midfield compared to United’s, that is no disrespect but (Kevin) De Bruyne’s first option is a forward pass.

‘When I see United play it is always a little too safe, it is “I don’t want to make a mistake today”. Look at City’s midfielders, their first option is to play forward.’

Rashford's strike kept their Carabao Cup hopes alive after Manchester City had threatened to end their Wembley dreams in the first leg of their semi-final.

Pep Guardiola's defending champions were coasting at 3-0 with 20 minutes to go thanks to Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez and an Andreas Pereira own goal after embarrassing their hosts with a dominant display at Old Trafford.

However, one lapse allowed Rashford to score the goal which made it 3-1 to give them a chance in three weeks' time, having won at the Etihad barely a month ago in the league.

'Everything can improve a lot... we were way off the tempo': Manchester United star Marcus Rashford admits under performing side need to step up after Manchester City pummeling

* Manchester United lost 3-1 to arch rivals Manchester City in the Carabao Cup
* United were outplayed in every department in what was a flattering scoreline
* Striker Marcus Rashford admits his side are performing well below standard
* Pressure is growing on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Norwich visit this weekend

Marcus Rashford admitted Manchester United are performing well below the requisite standards amid another sustained slump in form.

Tuesday night’s galling Carabao Cup defeat by Manchester City means United have won just two of their last six matches.

While Rashford’s goal prevented the semi-final from being over as a contest before the second leg, he suggested the team are not quick enough to adjust during matches.

‘We're probably only showing half of what we can do as a team,’ the 22-year-old said. ‘We need to keep fighting to find that extra percentage that will win us games.

‘Everything can improve a lot. We were way off the tempo against City. They changed a little bit and brought more players deeper than the last time we played against them.

‘On the pitch we have to adapt. We have to try to control the situation better than the way we did.

Marcus Rashford admits Manchester United are performing well under the required standard. United struggled to adapt to a change of system from City and were punished in the first half

‘We have to learn to control those key moments better than we have done this season. It's a learning curve for us.

‘We move on to the Norwich game now, analyse what went wrong in this game and try to put it right.’

Home supporters ironically cheered the half-time substitution of Jesse Lingard, while criticism of Phil Jones was audible throughout.

Rashford, made captain for the first time, insisted the players possess the desire to turn their fortunes around.

‘Nobody wants to lose,’ he added. ‘Nobody started playing football to lose games. I don't think that's the problem. I think everyone knows that we want to win and that the team is fighting. We have to continue to do that.

‘Whether you have the armband or not you have to put that responsibility on your own shoulders and try to show yourself as a Man United player.

‘The first half on Tuesday wasn't a Man United performance but the second half we showed character and courage and it was more like us.’

RASHFORD REVEALS HIS PERSONAL CHALLENGE

Marcus Rashford is remaining thirsty for goals as he looks to add to his haul in Saturday's game with Norwich City.

The England international took his tally for 2019/20 to 17 with the strike in the 3-1 defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg, which is already his personal best for a season.

It continued a fine run of form for the 22-year-old, who was not only our Player of the Month in December but also the recipient of the PFA Fans' award for the same period. However, for the forward, it is not about personal accolades or even how many times he has found the net, but more about getting in the right areas to hit the target.

“My goalscoring form has been good,” he told us. “As a forward, you always find areas you can improve and score more so I think that’s what I’ve been trying to focus on – getting in positions where I’ve been scoring and getting there more often in games, to score more goals to help the team. I think that’s the focus from the forward players and it’s been good.

“It’s a nice feeling to be put on that level [the Player of the Month] but honestly, for me, it’s how often can I repeat that and how long can I stay at that level. That’s the challenge for me.”

Rashford's personal favourite from last month was his towering header against Newcastle United, an illustration of another string to his bow.

“Probably Newcastle, I think,” he replied, when asked about the pick of his six strikes from eight matches. “Just scoring different types of goals, as a forward, is something that is necessary really if you want to be scoring 20-25 goals in a season. You have to score a variety of different goals and that was one for me I’ve been working on. I think it was nice for me to get one in that game.

“We always work on heading but, for me, it’s not necessarily the technique in doing the header, it’s the timing and the weight of the pass and how fast you run going into the equation. It’s those things running through your mind when you’re playing and, for one to come off, was good.”

Another header led to a first-half equaliser during the 2-2 draw against Aston Villa but it was eventually recorded as a Tom Heaton own goal.
“Yeah but, to be fair,” he replied. “I should have just stuck it in the net myself. Obviously that one didn’t count for me but you get the picture and to keep getting in those areas is what is important.”

Rashford, who is poised to make his 200th appearance for the club against Norwich this weekend, scored his 50th goal in the reverse fixture at Carrow Road and appreciates that, despite their lowly position, the Canaries will aim to make life difficult at Old Trafford.

“Norwich play good football,” he added. “I remember the first game we played them, in tight situations, they were very good at switching the play and stuff like that. They’ve definitely been unlucky this season, in terms of where they are positioned in the league, and they are a team we need to show respect.

“They have some dangerous players and it will be a good game. Hopefully, we can get to grips with them and control it from early on. Hopefully, we’ll score some goals but we’ll be patient as well. You can’t score every time you attack, it’s about having that knowledge of games and being patient on the ball.”

“It was a crazy game there,” Rashford recalled. “We missed two penalties in the first half but then we both went on to score [he and Anthony Martial]. It was 3-0 before half-time but, even throughout this period, when we could have had five goals, they played some good football and were difficult at times, shifting us from side to side. They have got some good players on the counter attack, Teemu Pukki’s movement is terrific, so they have got threats throughout the pitch.

“We worked hard and that was what created our good patterns of play we had. We scored goals because we went there and worked hard as a team.

“They like to attack with their full-backs and push players up from midfield and have midfield runners. They are a team that plays good football and want to score goals and, you know, that sometimes suits us a little bit. However they decide to play, we have to find a way to break them down and score goals because that is what is going to win us the game.”

HOW RASHFORD JOINED UNITED LEGENDS ON SATURDAY

After playing against Norwich City at Old Trafford on Saturday, Marcus Rashford became the third-youngest player in history to make 200 appearances for Manchester United.

The homegrown hero from Wythenshawe has been a mainstay since making his debut in February 2016, as a last-minute starter in a memorable Europa League tie against FC Midtjylland.

Since then, our popular Academy graduate has scored 64 goals for United and won four trophies – which is mightily impressive for a 22-year-old!

According to research that appears in the latest edition of Inside United magazine, which is out next Tuesday, Rashford has taken his place alongside five other luminaries of Reds history, all of whom made their debuts as teenagers.

AGE AT REACHING 200 UNITED APPEARANCES

George Best: 21 years and seven months
Ryan Giggs: 21 years and nine months
Marcus Rashford: 22 years and two months
Cristiano Ronaldo: 22 years and eight months
Wayne Rooney: 22 years and 11 months
Bobby Charlton: 24 years and four months

DOUBLE TON-UP

Speaking to us ahead of achieving the landmark, Rashford admitted his four years in the first team have absolutely flown by.

“It's gone very fast and I remember the first one like it was yesterday,” says Marcus. “But these are the moments when you want to grow.

“I remember when I first came into the team, you are not even thinking about when your 200th game is going to be. We have played a lot of football and it is just a credit to the club, to give somebody the opportunity to play that many times.

“Hopefully I can keep doing my best and keep helping the team.”

Interestingly, Anthony Martial is also in line to join this iconic group of players.

The Frenchman is currently on 196 appearances and, at the age of 24 years and one month, he is set to overtake Sir Bobby Charlton in the list of youngest Reds to reach 200 appearances.

Mino Raiola 'held talks over representing Marcus Rashford' as super-agent wanted to add the striker to his books along with Manchester United team-mates Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard

* Mino Raiola is reportedly keen on representing Man United star Marcus Rashford
* He is currently looked after by his brothers Dane Rashford and Dwaine Maynard
* However super-agent Raiola met with the pair last year about taking on Rashford

Mino Raiola has met with Marcus Rashford's agents over the possibility of representing the Manchester United star, according to reports.

The England international is currently represented by his brothers, Dane Rashford and Dwaine Maynard, who have their own agency but with his profile always growing, Raiola is keen to add Rashford to his books.

According to The Athletic, Raiola met with the pair early last year to talk about taking on the 22-year-old, with Rashford's brothers also seeking advice from the super-agent.

As reported by Sportsmail, the news comes a week after Raiola took Jesse Lingard under his wing.

The partnership said to be part of a wider strategy from the agent to establish links with more English players, which would see Rashford as the perfect addition going forward.

Any link-up with the forward would be primarily for marketing purposes, with Raiola having already helped Paul Pogba become the icon he is today.

However, news of a potential link-up with their star striker is sure to raise eyebrows given Raiola's tempestuous relationship with United.

Marcus Rashford could become the next Man United player to be represented by Mino Raiola. Super-agent Raiola reportedly met with Rashford's representatives early last year

United are aware that Raiola has taken charge of Lingard's affairs, and privately accept that the development may make it more difficult to keep hold of him given their stormy relationship with the agent.

United have found their relationship with the agent beneficial in recent years, Raiola playing a central role in some of the club's most expensive ever transfers, namely Pogba.

The Italian-born agent facilitated his client Pogba's switch to Manchester United from Juventus for a world record £89million fee in 2016.

He also helped bring Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Romelu Lukaku to Old Trafford.

But the 52-year-old's public persona has irked certain members of the United hierarchy in recent months, particularly in relation to Pogba's future at the club.

'Pogba's problem is Manchester United. It's a club out of touch with reality and without a sporting project,' Raiola said earlier this month.

'I wouldn't take anyone there, they would even ruin Maradona, Pele and Maldini. Paul needs a club and a squad, one like Juventus was before.'

While a potential alliance with Raiola may be worrying sign for some at the club, Rashford has reiterated his desire to stay at United having signed a new long-term deal until 2023 recently.
