Talking Malcolm Glazer & Family

MALCOLM GLAZER

Malcolm Irving Glazer (born May 25, 1928) is an American businessman and sports team owner. He is the president and chief executive officer of First Allied Corporation, a holding company for his varied business interests and owns both the Manchester United Football Club of the English Premier League and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a National Football League team based in Tampa, Florida.

Biography

Born in Rochester, New York as one of seven children, Glazer took over the family watch-parts company at age 15 following the death of his father. Always one with an astute mind for business, Glazer first expanded the company and then continued his foray into the professional world, investing in other businesses.

Glazer eventually went on to become president and CEO of First Allied Corporation, a holding company specializing in ownership, management and leasing of community and neighborhood shopping centers throughout the United States. He owns, has owned or has been the largest share holder of a diverse portfolio of international holdings and public companies, including: First Allied, Zapata Corporation, Houlihan’s Restaurant chain,Harley Davidson, Formica, Tonka, Specialty Equipment and Omega Protein.

In addition to his business ventures, Glazer is also involved in philanthropic efforts. He launched the Glazer Family Foundation in 1999, which is dedicated to assisting charitable and educational causes in the Tampa Bay community. Inits 14 years of existence, the Foundation has donated millions in programs, tickets, grants and in-kind contributions. Recently, the Foundation donated $5 million toward the construction of the Glazer Children’s Museum in downtown Tampa, which opened on September 25, 2010.

Glazer has also overseen the operations of the far-reaching Glazer Family Foundation’s Vision Program, created in 2006 to provide school-children with an opportunity to have vision problems identified in schools at an early age. The initiative, highlighted by the Vision Mobile, visits schools and provides eye examinations to thousands of disadvantaged children.

Glazer’s charitable activities have also included the Tampa Bay Sports Commission, an organization that promotes amateur sports activities. Glazer has committed $2 million to the Commission. Glazer currently resides in Palm Beach, Florida. He and his wife, Linda, have six children and 14 grandchildren.

Business history

Glazer’s first attempt at a corporate takeover was in 1984, when he launched an unsuccessful $7.6 billion bid to buy the bankrupt freight rail company, Conrail. He also failed in an attempted takeover of kitchen designer Formica in 1988 and, later, with motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson.

One of the companies that Glazer did purchase successfully was the nearly bankrupt Zapata Offshore, a remnant of Zapata, an oil and gas company founded by George H. W. Bush, which was left over after the latter's takeover by South Penn Oil to create Pennzoil. Glazer successfully diversified it into fish protein and Caribbean supermarkets.

Glazer has owned a diverse portfolio of nationwide investments which include food service equipment, food packaging and food supplies, marine protein, broadcasting, health care, property, banking, natural gas and oil, the Internet, stocks and bonds.

Sports ownership

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Glazer purchased the Tampa Bay Buccaneers franchise on January 16, 1995, following the death of former owner Hugh Culverhouse. Glazer serves as president of the team, while sons Bryan, Joel and Edward are co-chairmen.

Since coming under the Glazer family’s ownership, the club has experienced an upswing in its fortunes, winning 131 regular season games, earning seven playoff berths and capturing its first Super Bowl Championship in Super Bowl XXXVII. Prior to Glazer’s purchase, the Buccaneers had won just 87 games in 19 seasons and had advanced to the postseason just three times.

Tampa Bay also eclipsed the club record for wins in a regular season with 12 in 2002. In fact, the top five single-season win totals in club history (12 in 2002, 11 in 2005, 11 in 1999, 10 in 2010, 10 in 2000 and 10 in 1997) have all come under Glazer’s stewardship, and Tampa Bay was the only team in the league to play in the postseason each year from 1999 to 2002. The 2007 campaign saw the Buccaneers claim their third NFC South Division title in six years, the sixth division crown in franchise history. The three titles are the most for any team in the division since its inception in 2002.

In January of 2009, Glazer and his family hired Raheem Morris as head coach of the Buccaneers, making him the youngest head coach in the National Football League upon his appointment. In addition, the family continued to upgrade their Tampa Bay’s front office by naming longtime Director of Pro Personnel Mark Dominik as the fourth general manager in club history. With Dominik and Morris in place, the Buccaneers began a rebuilding process, starting with drafting franchise quarterback Josh Freeman in 2009, followed by a highly regarded 2010 draft class that included such players as defensive tackles Gerald McCoy and Brian Price, wide receivers Arrelious Benn and Mike Williams, cornerback Myron Lewis and safety Cody Grimm. In 2010 under Morris, the team completed its sixth double-digit win season in franchise history, finishing with a record of 10-6 and just missing the playoffs.

On January 27, 2012, Glazer and his family appointed long-time Rutgers University head coach Greg Schiano as the ninth head coach in franchise history. In his first year at the helm, Schiano increased the team’s win total by four from the previous season. In the same year, under Glazer’s supervision, Schiano worked with general manager Mark Dominik to draft Boise State University running back Doug Martin in the first round of the April NFL Draft. The duo also signed prized free agent wide receiver Vincent Jackson from the San Diego Chargers. These two key players, along with lifetime Buccaneer defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, each were elected to the 2012 NFL Pro Bowl squad.

Glazer has successfully constructed a multi-faceted plan, which calls for stable ownership, a talented coaching staff, knowledgeable personnel executives, and asolid business partnership within the Tampa/St. Petersburg communities.

In addition, Glazer has devoted a significant amount of time working to make the organization more fan-friendly by greatly increasing fan activities at Buccaneers home games through the expansion of the club’s community relations and special events departments. His mandate to enhance the team’s visibility in the community was reflected through increased appearances by Buccaneer players, coaches, cheerleaders and front office officials in recent years. Since 1999, the team has also coordinated with the Glazer Family Foundation to host “Gameday for Kids,” a program that has hosted over 13,000 underprivileged youth at Buccaneers home games, giving them an opportunity to spend pre-game moments on the playing field and to cheer on the Buccaneers from exclusive seats in Raymond James stadium.

Glazer’s input has been sought on the league level as well, as evidenced by his tenure on the NFL’s Finance Committee. He has also played a major role in Tampa becoming a host for the Super Bowl on several occasions. In May 2005, the Bay Area was awarded Super Bowl XLIII, marking the second time during Glazer’s ownership the area welcomed the world’s most spectacular event.

Manchester United

Glazer acquired ownership of Manchester United between 2003 and 2005. The club is currently headed by the Glazer family, with sons Joel and Avram serving as co-chairmen. Since taking ownership, Glazer has also overseen the club’s continued success. Manchester United was crowned champions of England for the second consecutive year in 2008, champions of Europe as the UEFA Champions League winner and champions of the world as the FIFA Club World Cup winner. After finishing as runner-up to Chelsea in the 2009–10 season, United achieved a then-record 19th league title in 2010–11, securing the championship with a 1–1 away drawagainst Blackburn Rovers on 14 May 2011. After again finishing as runner-up, this time to Manchester City in the 2011–12 season, United improved on their record with a 20th league title in 2012–13, securing the championship with a 3–0 home win against Aston Villa on 22 April 2013.Under Glazer ownership, since 2005, the team has won five League championships, three League Cups, five FA Community Shields, one UEFA Champions League Cup, and a franchise-first FIFA Club World Cup, won in 2008.

Manchester United is reputed to be the most popular football club in the world, with one of the highest average home attendance in Europe. The club's worldwide fan base includes more than 200 officially recognized branches of the Manchester United Supporters Club (MUSC), in at least 24 countries. The club takes advantage of this support through its worldwide summer tours.

Woodward backs the Glazers
Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward says history will judge the Glazer family as better owners than most fans originally feared.

The Glazers attracted massive criticism following their leveraged buy-out of United in 2005 and some fans were so angered by the Americans' involvement in their club that they formed their own club FC United.

Many supporters who remained loyal were concerned about the fate of the club, fearing the massive debt would be a major handicap in the transfer market and could even raise the potential of United being unable to pay their bills.

But the Glazer family have remained in the background and watched the club win five Premier League titles in eight full seasons, and reach three Champions League finals, one of which they won against Chelsea in 2008.

In an exclusive interview with the club's fanzine 'United We Stand', Woodward said: "I'm sensitive to the general feeling about being fearful about the future of the club under this ownership.

"I think we should explain what the debt means.

"I can understand that [the fans' distrust of the Glazers]. Time will perhaps make them look better owners than some think, especially when they are compared to other owners."
The Glazers launched a successful partial flotation of United in the New York Stock Exchange last year and rumours have persisted of a second such move at some point in the future.

But Woodward expects the family to be around Old Trafford for a long time to come.

"I can't answer for them as I don't know what their intentions are," he said.

"I expect them to be in an ownership position and involved in the club for many years to come."

Manchester United Owners, the Glazers, Reportedly Call Crisis Meeting

The Glazer family will fly into England on Thursday in a bid to sort out the growing mess at Manchester United, according to David McDonnell of the Mirror:

Quote:
Manchester United owners the Glazers are flying in for a summit meeting tomorrow to sort out the crisis at the club.

Co-chairman Joel and Avram Glazer, along with director brother Bryan, will meet with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to take a hands-on approach to recruiting a successor to David Moyes.
McDonnell also suggests the Glazers know they are heading into a "war of words" over how Moyes was sacked after League Managers Association chief executive Richard Bevan labelled the club "unprofessional" for failing to notify the fallen manager before leaks spread across the internet.

Moyes remains dignified—despite allegedly feeling "furious and disgusted" with the situation, per Alan Nixon of the Mirror—and released a statement on Wednesday thanking the club's backroom staff, Sir Alex Ferguson and the supporters.

BBC 606 posted his words in full:

Curiously, Moyes opted not to acknowledge the players when saying his public thanks. The sacked Scotsman is believed to have endured a rocky relationship with many of those pulling on the shirt, as reported by Ian Ladyman of the Daily Mail and tweeted by Bleacher Report UK:

Self-help book tops list of flaws in Moyes’ Man Utd reign: http://bit.ly/1hnAF8h
The Glazers arrive "in the hope of creating a plan for the club to go forward and find a new manager," per McDonnell's report. Dutch boss Louis van Gaal is the current favourite to take up the post after the World Cup, although Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti and Paris Saint-Germain manager Laurent Blanc are also thought to be in the running, reported by Ian Herbert of the Independent.

United's next manager will inherit an underperforming squad that is crammed with deadwood. Players such as Chris Smalling, Nani and Tom Cleverley will need to up their game considerably if an Old Trafford future is to ensue, while Marouane Fellaini is destined to remain the £27 million spectre of the previous reign.

Whoever's hired will be tasked with returning United to the attack-minded, clinical style that has made the Red Devils famous over many years. Moyes' battling, "play not to lose" style failed to fit in with a group of players who are used to going on the offensive, no matter their opposition.

The Glazers, so often berated by fans for inflicting huge debt onto the club, saw United shares rocket by seven percent after the sacking of Moyes, reported by Sky News. Supporters will be hoping significant funds are made available during the summer as the club looks to regain Champions League football next season.

Right now, things remain up in the air at the Theatre of Dreams. Moyes' tenure was a failed experiment that needed to be cut short before it heavily impacted the long-term future of the club, ensuring the Glazers can't afford to get the next appointment wrong.

United's era of transition may have taken a backwards step, but after less than middling performances on the pitch, Moyes' sacking became essential to the future success of the club.

FBI investigated Malcolm Glazer threats made by fans angered at Manchester United takeover

According to a 120 page report released by the FBI the American received a series of threatening calls and emails

Under threat: The FBI report suggest the late Malcolm Glazer was the subject of threats

The FBI investigated threats against Manchester United's late owner Malcolm Glazer and his family by fans angered at his takeover of the Old Trafford club.

Before his death in May this year the American received a series of threatening calls and emails, whose buying of the Red Devils nine years ago was angrily opposed by supporters.

According to a 120 page report released by the FBI one of the threats was made to Glazer’s office at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the American football club he also owned.

A man, who said he was a member of a supporters' group, warned the businessman’s family would be in danger unless he failed to stop his bid of Manchester United.

In a second call, the same man, said he knew people who "were ready to take action against Glazer”.

He added: "I am giving you another warning" and set a deadline for which the takeover was to be abandoned.

Agents believed all the calls came from the UK with another threat being made by a man with a British accent saying saying he wished Mr Glazer, who made his billions in property, was "dead".

The documents, released under a Freedom of Information request ion, showed the threat was made on May 12, 2005, the same day he became the majority shareholder at Old Trafford.

The man called the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, where the Buccaneers are based.

Before launching a £790m takeover largely funded by loans secured against the club's assets, Glazer had gradually bought out United shareholders between 2003 and 2005.

Although he never stepped foot inside Old Trafford, he received direct threats from furious fans who opposed his ownership fearing the businessman could sell off the stadium, raise prices and saddle the club with debt.

No-one was charged as the source of the threats could not be identified while a Greater Manchester Police investigation against the American, who died aged 85, also failed to find those responsible.

The family still own the club while its two co-chairmen are Joel and Avram Glazer, Malcolm's sons.

Manchester United co-owner Avram Glazer pictured in Saudi Arabia amid possible takeover bid... but American tycoon is only there for a global forum

Manchester United co-owner Avram Glazer has been pictured on a trip to Saudi Arabia amid continued speculation of a possible takeover bid by the nation's royal family.

Last month reports emerged that Crown Prince Mohammad - second in command to King Salman - wanted to make his mark in the world of football and viewed Glazer-owned United as the perfect acquisition.

United sources insisted the club is not for sale with the Saudi royal family keen to do business with the Glazer family to rival Abu Dhabi's ownership of Manchester City.

Glazer's recent whereabouts have also fuelled rumours of an imminent sale though, with him spending a large chunk of his time in the Middle East.

He has now been spotted on social media once again in the Gulf state, this time at a meeting with a gentleman identified as Moh. Abosak in Riyadh, the country's capital.

Glazer is in the country to attend and speak at the MISK global forum, a two-day event that 'brings young leaders, creators and thinkers together with established global innovators'.

The Red Devils already have a connection with the oil-rich Gulf state after announcing a strategic partnership with Saudi Arabia's General Sports Authority last year.

However, it's understood the American owners have no wish to sell a club they bought in 2005 for £790m, even though United are now valued at between £3bn and £4bn.

The Glazers sold two per cent of the club's shares with limited voting rights in August last year, and may be interested in selling more to the Saudis, but they are unlikely to sanction any deal that would dilute their ownership and control of United.

Mohammad bin Salman (left) is understood to be interested in Manchester United. But the Glazers have no wish to sell the club amid interest from the Saudi royal family. If the oil-rich Saudi Arabians were to buy United, it would likely cost them over £3billion

The kingdom continues to face international scrutiny over the disappearance of a Saudi journalist.

The takeover rumours came after governments around the world piled pressure on the Saudis after Washington Post reporter Jamal Khashoggi, a critic of Prince Mohammad, was killed after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

If United's current owners were to sell the club, it would cost the Saudis more than £3bn - but there is a chance that the crown prince could instead just buy a portion.

Saudi Arabia has already delved into the world of sport with purchases in both F1 and WWE - and football is already part of a wider political battle between the Gulf States.

For example, the Saudis, who severed all ties with Qatar last year, banned Qatari channel beIN Sports.

Then channel BeoutQ, allegedly based in Saudi Arabia, apparently started pirating beIN Sport's coverage of the English top flight.
