Welcome back! Wayne Rooney confirmed as DC United's new head coach as MLS side hail unveiling of their new 'fearless leader', weeks after he left crisis club Derby County

* Wayne Rooney has been appointed as the new manager of MLS side DC United
* It's a swift return to management for the England icon, who recently left Derby
* Sportsmail exclusively revealed on Friday that Rooney was lined up for a return
* The 36-year-old left Pride Park last month following a tumultuous spell
* Now the Man United and Everton legend returns to his former club in the US

Wayne Rooney has made a swift return to management after being named as the new head coach of his former club DC United.

The 36-year-old left Derby last month following a tumultuous spell where his own stock improved despite chaos off the pitch at the Rams.

Sportsmail exclusively revealed the news on Friday that Rooney had been lined up for a shock return to DC United

The former England, Manchester United and Everton striker has wasted no time being out of the game, although he will have to wait for completion of a visa application to formally take up his new role back in Washington, where he enjoyed a two-year playing spell.

'DC United announced today that Wayne Rooney has been named as the club's new head coach,' the Major League Soccer club said in a statement.

'Interim head coach Chad Ashton will remain in charge of the team until Wayne Rooney has received his work visa.'

Rooney, 36, played for DC United in 2018 and 2019, scoring 25 goals in 52 matches.

The Manchester United legend signs his contract as he becomes their DC United's new boss

The MLS side tweeted: 'Welcome back, Wayne. The club is excited to announce @WayneRooney as the new head coach of D.C. United.'

Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan, co-chairmen of DC United, said in a joint-statement on the club's official website: 'Wayne is a soccer legend and one of the most exciting and dynamic up-and-coming managers in our sport.

'He's already proven in his young coaching career that he knows how to lead a group through adversity.

'He has an understanding of our league and what it takes to be successful in Major League Soccer thanks to his two-year stay with us as a player.

'The passion he showed while wearing Black-and-Red electrified our city and our club and we are so excited to welcome him back as our Head Coach.'

Rooney will have to wait for completion of a visa application to formally take up his new role. Rooney, 36, played for DC United in 2018 and 2019, scoring 25 goals in 52 matches

Rooney left League One side Derby County at the end of June having been unable to prevent the crisis-stricken club from relegation out of the Championship.

He received plenty of plaudits for the way he led a club in administration and severe financial difficulties.

The Washington Post reported last week that Rooney is expected to agree to a multi-year contract worth at least $1million (£830,000) annually. He will act as a consultant for DC United until he is granted a work permit, which typically takes two to three weeks.

By means of comparison, a survey by Sportsmail from 2020 revealed that Championship managers in England, as Rooney was last season, earn on average £878,000-a-year, while in League One that drops to £182,438.

Rooney will inherit a struggling team with DC second bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference, having won just five of 17 matches so far this season.

They were thrashed 7-0 by Philadelphia in their latest outing on Saturday, the heaviest defeat in the history of the club.

Rooney takes over from interim coach Chad Ashton, who is expected to return to the assistant coach role he has performed for the last 15 years. They sacked coach Hernan Losada back in April.

Rooney, who was at Wimbledon with wife Coleen and son Kai on Friday, had a successful two-year spell with the Washington based side where he scored 25 goals in 52 games and energised the franchise, though his family did struggle to settle in the United States.

The move may be easier to manage this time round as the MLS season is due to end in October unless teams are in the play-offs and they will be wrapped up in November with the World Cup in mind.

Rooney has spoken openly about his ambitions to continue coaching here with his ultimate goal to manage Manchester United but a spell back in America would add another string to his bow as he looks to make himself a more accomplished coach.

He has been asked to interview for the manager's job at Everton previously and will not be short of offers when they arise in the Championship or beyond after the manner in which he handled himself and his players through Derby's battle to survive - despite the obstacles and points penalties that were thrown against them.

However, Rooney's wife Coleen could be reluctant for her husband to make the move back to the United States, after stating Washington 'is quite behind the UK' when the ex-Man United star moved to the club as a player.

In texts to Rebekah Vardy in 2018, which were revealed earlier this year amid the Wagatha Christie feud, Coleen said: 'Hiya, hope your all week [well]. We're ok thanks its tough being on your own though.'

She added: 'Washington isn't the best....nice to visit but different to live. Not loads for the kids to do, mostly park, hardly any soft plays and things like that.

'It's quite behind the UK, which I never would have though. But we will get used to it (I hope).

'Wayne is loving it, and the kids are fine, settled into school straight away. So really happy they are fine. Thanks for the message love xx.'

'I really find that a bit disrespectful to this league': Wayne Rooney insists his return to DC United is NOT a backwards step amid criticism of his latest managerial move, with the Manchester United legend adamant he will develop as a coach in the MLS

* Wayne Rooney was confirmed as DC United's new head coach earlier this week
* The ex-Man Utd and England star ended his tumultuous Derby spell last month
* Now he has returned to the MLS for another stint with DC, this time as a coach
* Some believe his move back to the States represents a regression in his career
* But Rooney has fired back at critics and insisted he will improve as a coach at DC

Wayne Rooney has hit out at 'disrespectful' critics who believe his move to DC United represents a step back in his managerial career, instead insisting he can develop as a coach in the MLS.

Rooney, 36, called time on his rocky stint as Derby boss this summer following their relegation to League One, having gained plaudits for his work amid the club's financial woes off the pitch last season.

And as Sportsmail exclusively revealed on Friday, the Manchester United legend had been lined up for a shock return to DC United, who confirmed him as their new head coach earlier this week.

After taking on a job in England's second tier at Derby, many feel Rooney's return to DC - where he previously enjoyed a brief stint as a player - is a backwards step in his bid to one day manage in the Premier League.

Wayne Rooney has hit out at critics who believe his move to DC United represents a step back. Rooney was confirmed as DC United's new head coach earlier this week after leaving Derby

Yet, when asked about this opinion he issued a stern response to his detractors and said: 'I really find that a bit disrespectful to this league. I feel the experience I gained at Derby County over the past 18 months has been great in my development as a manager and to come back here to the MLS, to D.C. United, was an exciting challenge for me.

'I feel I can develop here as a coach, but also the team need to improve. That's obvious for everyone to see. I really believe with my capabilities of developing young players that we can get this club back to successful ways again.

'It's going to take a lot of hard work but I'm here to do it and really improve the team.'

He then added: 'As a player, playing at the top level you could really choose which club you want to go to.

'As a manager I'm at the beginning of that journey — I have to put the work, the hours in… One day I want to manage at the top level. And this is part of that process.'

The Washington Post reported last week that, once his visa application to formally begin work in the States is completed, Rooney will pen a multi-year contract worth $1million (£830,000) annually with DC.

The Man United legend gained plaudits for his work at Derby amid the club's financial woes. But Rooney is adamant that heading back to the MLS will help him develop further as a coach

He is set to inherit a team in disarray, with the club second bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference after winning just five of 17 matches so far this season.

The former England captain enjoyed great success in his playing stint at DC, scoring 25 goals in 52 games while galvanising the Washington-based outfit, although his family did struggle to adjust to life in the States.

Rooney's wife Coleen may well have been reluctant to head back to America after stating Washington 'is quite behind the UK' during her husband's previous spell in the country.

In texts to Rebekah Vardy in 2018, which were revealed earlier this year amid the Wagatha Christie feud, Coleen said: 'Hiya, hope your all week [well]. We're ok thanks its tough being on your own though.'

Wayne Rooney 'is at the centre of a battle between the BBC and ITV who BOTH want the former England captain on their World Cup coverage this year'... with the DC United boss keen to get in front of the camera once the MLS campaign ends

* Wayne Rooney caught in a TV tug-of-war as both BBC and ITV vie for his services
* Both broadcasters keen on having Rooney as part of their World Cup coverage
* Former England striker was recently announced as the manager of DC United
* The 2022 Qatar World Cup will take after MLS season finishes in October

Wayne Rooney is reportedly caught in the middle of a TV tug-of-war as both the BBC and ITV look to add the former England striker to their coverage of the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

Though Rooney has recently taken the reigns at former club DC United, the broadcasting roles will not interfere with his managerial responsibilities as the World Cup will take place during the MLS off-season.

The former Manchester United striker has previously made forays into broadcasting for Sky Sports, appearing as pundit on Monday Night Football back in 2018.

A source told The Sun: 'Wayne is keen to be involved. Not only is it a really lucrative opportunity but it's an area Wayne is keen to get more experience in.

Rooney appeared alongside Jamie Carragher on Monday Night Football in 2018

'And for ITV and BBC, landing Rooney would be a massive coup. He is one of England's greatest ever players and remains a massive fan of the national team.

Rooney enjoyed a long and decorated career playing for England, winning 120 caps and scoring 53 goals during his time with the national team.

After hanging up his boots in 2021, Rooney was appointed manager of Derby County.

The England record goalscorer earned plaudits last season for fighting bravely against relegation as the Rams ultimately fell into the third tier amidst a host of problems off the field.

Now in charge of MLS club DC United, Rooney made his first signing earlier this week, bringing in former Derby midfielder Ravel Morrison on a one-year deal.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar will kick off on November 21, with a game between Holland and Senegal.

Wayne Rooney urges Man United to SELL Cristiano Ronaldo so Erik ten Hag can build a title-winning team... as the England legend insists they 'aren't ready to challenge' Man City and Liverpool yet

* Wayne Rooney says Man United should grant Cristiano Ronaldo his wish to leave
* The former United striker believes the club should turn to a younger alternative
* Rooney spent five seasons playing alongside Ronaldo in a Red Devils shirt
* The Portuguese star has declared himself fit to start against Brighton later today

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has told the club to sell wantaway forward Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.

Ronaldo has asked to leave Old Trafford, but boss Erik ten Hag insists that the Portuguese superstar remains in his plans for the new season.

Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid have all turned down the chance to sign Ronaldo, who could feature in United's opening Premier League fixture against Brighton this afternoon.

Current DC United manager Rooney, who spent five seasons playing alongside Ronaldo during the 37-year-old's first spell at Old Trafford, believes that the Red Devils should look to the future with a younger alternative upfront.

'I think United should let Cristiano Ronaldo go,' Rooney wrote in The Times. 'It's not that Ronaldo can't play in a Ten Hag team. He can play in any team. Ronny will always score you goals.

'But my personal view is that United aren't ready to challenge for the title now, so the aim has to be to build a team that can win the league in the next three to four years, and you have to plan for that.

'If the reports are true that Cristiano wants to leave the club, then United should allow him to go and get a No 9 in who is going to be there for the next three or four years and really help them build a team that can be successful. Ten Hag has to be given time to do it.'

Wayne Rooney says that United should grant Ronaldo his wish and look for younger options. Erik ten Hag continues to insist that the 37-year-old remains in his plans for the season ahead. Rooney spent five seasons playing alongside Ronaldo at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson

Red Salzburg striker Benjamin Sesko, 19, is one name who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford as talks continue between United chiefs and Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes.

The Portuguese international missed the majority of the club's pre-season after being given compassionate leave for a family issue, but did play the first half of their final friendly against Rayo Vallecano last weekend.

However, he and many other players left Old Trafford 10 minutes before full-time, which Ten Hag branded 'unacceptable'.

Ronaldo has declared himself fit to start against Brighton this afternoon, after his manager said 'we will see' when asked if the forward would feature in the team's season opener.

Wayne Rooney tells Cristiano Ronaldo brutal truth that he 'obviously isn't the player he once was' and insists ex-Manchester United team-mate must be patient to force his way back from substitutes bench

* Wayne Rooney has urged Cristiano Ronaldo to stay patient at Manchester United
* The Portuguese hitman, 37, has struggled for game time so far this campaign
* He has featured on the bench in the Red Devils' last five Premier League matches
* Ronaldo must accept he is 'not the player he was', his former team-mate stated

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney insists his former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo must face the brutal truth that he is 'not the player he was' whilst waiting for opportunities under Erik ten Hag.

The 37-year-old has struggled for consistent game time since Erik ten Hag's arrival at Old Trafford, having expressed his desire to exit this summer, but Rooney feels the outcast must remain patient and understand that 'time catches up' with ageing players.

Despite residing on the bench during Manchester United's four-match winning run against Liverpool, Southampton, Leicester and Arsenal, Ronaldo has had sporadic opportunities to impress in the Europa League.

The ex-Real Madrid superstar started during United's shaky 3-2 win against Omonia on Thursday, yet failed once again to make the scoresheet.

Rooney, who played with Ronaldo at United between 2004-2009, admitted his former team-mate will be struggling with his lack of minutes.

Wayne Rooney has urged Cristiano Ronaldo to remain patient for game time at Man United. The pair played together between 2004-2009 before Ronaldo joined Real Madrid for £80m

'The manager's obviously gone a different way in terms of how they're playing and been successful,' the DC United manager told reporters on Friday.

'Cristiano ... him and (Lionel) Messi are two of the greatest players to ever play the game, but ultimately time catches up with us all.

'He's obviously not the player he was when he was 22 or 23, for instance. It's a tough one for him.

'Knowing him, it'll be very difficult for him to sit on the bench... I'm sure if he stays patient, his chance will come and, again, it's then obviously him taking those chances and trying to force his way back in.'

Rooney and Ronaldo basked in a fruitful era under Sir Alex Ferguson until 2009, when the Portuguese star completed his then world record £80million transfer to the Bernabeu.

During his time with Real Madrid, Ronaldo scored a ridiculous 450 goals from 438 matches, chalking up four more Champions League trophies and two LaLiga titles.

The Portuguese star has found himself on Erik ten Hag's bench more often than not this season. Rooney, 36, insisted that his former team-mate is 'no longer the player he was' at 22 or 23. Erik ten Hag has snubbed Ronaldo in favour of high-pressing forwards in the Premier League. Rooney, who is now the boss of MLS side DC United, feels Ronaldo must face the brutal truth

The Manchester United hitman enjoyed a productive return to Old Trafford last season, netting 24 goals in all competitions as the club's top scorer.

However, following Ten Hag's arrival from Ajax this summer, Ronaldo has been snubbed in favour of high-pressing and energetic forwards, despite last campaign's impressive goal tally.

The United manager admitted Ronaldo was 'p**ssed off' after being left completely out of the 6-3 mauling against Manchester City last weekend.

Ten Hag explaind: ‘Especially Cristiano, he’s really competitive. Of course, he wants to play. He’s p****d off when he’s not playing. That’s clear.

‘He’s not happy he wasn’t playing on Sunday, but that wasn’t the question. The question was about how he is on the training pitch, his mood when he’s around, and he’s happy. He is training well. I don’t see he is unhappy.

‘When we were 4-0 down, 5-1 down, 6-1 down, I didn’t bring him on out of respect. So nothing to do with what’s happening for the future, for January or next year.’

With Ronaldo set to face another Premier League match on the bench, the Red Devils head to Goodison Park to face in-form Everton on Sunday, sitting in sixth with 12 points.

'I'm looking better than him and still playing at a high level': Cristiano Ronaldo hits back at former team-mate Wayne Rooney for labelling his behaviour ‘unacceptable’, suggesting ex-England captain is jealous

* Wayne Rooney recently claimed Cristiano Ronaldo's behaviour has been 'unacceptable' this season
* He also called for Man United to sell Ronaldo in the summer transfer window
* Ronaldo has hit back at Rooney, and hinted that his ex-team-mate is jealous
* Ronaldo has also hit out at Erik Ten Hag and United in an explosive interview

Cristiano Ronaldo has hit back at Wayne Rooney after his former team-mate criticised his behaviour at Manchester United this season.

Ronaldo has fallen out of favour under Erik Ten Hag this term, starting just four league games, and showed his frustration last month by refusing to come on as a substitute against Tottenham and then walking down the tunnel before the final whistle.

Rooney recently claimed Ronaldo's actions have been 'unacceptable' at times, and has accused him of being an unwelcome 'distraction' for the club. Ronaldo has finally reacted to Rooney's comments, and has hinted that the ex-England captain may be jealous of him.

'I don’t know why he criticises me so badly... probably because he finished his career and I’m still playing at a high level,' Ronaldo said in an exclusive interview with Piers Morgan, as quoted by The Sun.

'I’m not going to say that I’m looking better than him. Which is true...'

Rooney's recent criticism is not the first time he has questioned Ronaldo's return to United.

He also urged the Red Devils to sell the Portuguese star in the summer after he told the club he wanted to leave, but Ronaldo failed to get a move away in the end.

Rooney and Ronaldo have a lengthy history, dating back to 2004 when Rooney arrived at Old Trafford a year after Ronaldo had moved to the English giants.

The pair were involved in an infamous incident at the 2006 World Cup when Rooney was sent off for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho.

Wayne Rooney recently criticised Cristiano Ronaldo for his behaviour at Man United. Ronaldo has hit back, hinting that Rooney is just jealous that he is still playing for a big club.Ronaldo and Rooney starred for United in the 2000s, but no longer seem to be on good terms

As Rooney left the pitch, Ronaldo was caught winking on camera, appearing to confirm that he'd played a role in ensuring the England striker was given his marching orders.

Upon returning to United the following season, the duo put their differences aside and struck up a deadly partnership, leading the club to three consecutive league titles, plus the Champions League in 2008.

However, it seems their relationship has now hit a new low, with Ronaldo not taking too kindly to Rooney questioning his behaviour.

Rooney is not the only ex-team-mate that Ronaldo seems to have fallen out with either.

Gary Neville has called for Ronaldo and United to part ways for a second time in the January transfer window after stating the team are better without him in it.

Ronaldo reacted to that by snubbing Neville ahead of United's home match with West Ham at the end of last month.

'His comments were a bit strange': Wayne Rooney appears to back Manchester United SACKING Cristiano Ronaldo as he responds to interview bombshell which saw him label his old team-mate a 'RAT'

* He also suggested Rooney was jealous of his good looks and continued career

Wayne Rooney has responded to Cristiano Ronaldo's 'rat' jibe by describing his former Manchester United strike partner's comments as 'strange' and appearing to back the club sacking him.

During his bombshell interview with Piers Morgan, Ronaldo took aim at Rooney's criticism of him in the media, suggesting there was 'jealousy' because he was better looking and still playing.

The 'rat' insult came after Morgan said he was trying to figure out how Rooney could dislike Ronaldo even more. He asked: 'More pounds in the bank or more Instagram followers?'

Laughing, Ronaldo replied: 'That's a good question! Probably similar!'

Morgan said: 'I'm just trying to work out how Wayne Rooney could hate you even more.'

Ronaldo answered: 'Not only him, imagine the rest of the rats they are going to criticise me too, but it is good to still be the No 1.'

The 37-year-old also said of Rooney, also 37, in the interview: 'Probably [it's jealousy]. Probably - because he finished his career in his 30s. I'm still playing at a high level; I'm not going to say that I'm looking better than him, which is true.'

Ronaldo hit out at criticism of him by former United team-mates - including Rooney - and made a 'rat' jibe as well as suggesting the former England striker was jealous he was still playing

Now Rooney has responded to Ronaldo's comments, telling CNN: 'Well, listen, Cristiano Ronaldo's a fantastic player and , as I've said before, he and [Lionel] Messi are the two best players probably to play the game.

'And, again, it's not a criticism. What I've said is age comes to all of us, and Cristiano is obviously is feeling that and he's finding it hard to deal with that.

'Obviously he's done an interview that's gone global. Bit strange, some of the comments are strange in there but I'm sure Manchester United will deal with it once they've seen the full interview and they'll take whatever action they need to take.'

As Sportsmail revealed, United are looking at ways they can sack Ronaldo after he claimed the club had 'betrayed' him and took aim at manager Erik ten Hag and the club's American owners.

The interview, which wasn't authorised by the club, dropped in the hours after United's 2-1 Premier League win at Fulham, their last fixture before the World Cup.

It meant Ronaldo could report for international duty with Portugal knowing he wouldn't have to directly face the consequences of his comments at United for at least three weeks.

Rooney responded to Ronaldo's comments while attending the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai. The pair played alongside one another in highly successful Manchester United sides

It remains to be seen if Ronaldo will play for United again following his comments, with lawyers for United studying his words to see if they constitute a breach of contract.

The Portuguese star has a contract worth £500,000-a-week at Old Trafford but this could be ripped up so he can leave as a free agent in January.

His agent Jorge Mendes is looking for a new club and it has emerged that the pair met officials from German champions Bayern Munich last week.

Default Re: Wayne Mark Rooney

ROONEY SCOOPS GLOBE SOCCER AWARD

Wayne Rooney has been recognised for his stellar footballing career at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai.

The Manchester United legend was one of a number of recipients, as he landed the Player Career prize, along with former Reds team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Brazil centre-forward Romario.

Carlo Ancelotti won Best Coach of the Year, with fellow Real Madrid man Karim Benzema received the individual player trophy, and there were also gongs for Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland.

After a star-studded gala, Rooney expressed his gratitude for the recognition and posted on social media: "Thanks for a great night, Globe Soccer. Honour to win the career award."

After exploding onto the scene with boyhood club Everton, and illuminating Euro 2004 with England, the striker moved to United and marked his debut with a hat-trick against Fenerbahce in the Champions League.

He would become the club's record goalscorer and also the leading marksman for his country.

Zlatan joined the Reds on a free transfer in 2016 and helped the team win the Community Shield, League Cup and Europa League during his first season.

However, he was injured towards the end of that campaign, and was only able to make five league appearances in the following term.

Nonetheless, he is still going strong at Milan and insisted at the ceremony that he has no plans to retire yet, despite turning 41 last month.

"I want to be back on the pitch soon," he said in Dubai. "I feel good. I hope to be back very soon."
